Tim replied to my earlier post about the portraits of La
Marche:
I tried searching in French, using variations on "gravures de
La Marche", "Grotte de La Marche" etc. and came up with a few
results. Somebody might find more with more time:

isto/magdaleni e
n/magdalenien2-1.htm
I have a book with pictures of about ten of them, but
unfortunately I have no scanner. The definitive book is:
Pales, L. & T. de Saint Pereuse 1976. Les gravures de La
Marche. Vol II: Les humains. but I can't get hold of it
where I am.
Apparently there are over 80 engraved faces on detached stone
plaques, dating to Magdalenian III, and they seem to be unique
for the Upper Palaeolithic in terms of being straightforward,
unambiguous portraits. Most Upper Magdalenian human
representations are fairly schematised female silhouettes.
Most of the La Marche pictures seem to be profiles but there
are a couple of full face pictures, like the one of the
bearded man which is in a lot of books. Some of the faces do
look a bit odd, very prognathic lower face, and others looks
more normal: there do seem to have been quite a few different
artists at work.

Thanks, Tim, the references and remarks were helpful.
I've also noticed since then a couple of faces that fit
very well with the profiles at La Marche. Danny Glover is a
good example but Connie Booth of "Fawlty Towers" fame is
even better.
