sahara question

What is the history of the sahara desert from the miocene to
the time when hominids were close their present form? I know
about that nice fossil Fayum area but are there any other
potential areas where primate ancestors might be found?

I would think even if buried deep under sand they may be
preserved very decently ......but maybe there was very little
up in the north of africa.
