Researchers from the University of Chicago have estimated
that genetic mutations – the raw material for evolution –
occur 5.25 times more often in males than in females. This
discovery should lay to rest any doubts raised by recent
studies questioning the dominant role males play in producing
mutations for molecular evolution.
Their study, published in the April 11 issue of Nature, also
shows that these mutations are caused mainly by random
errors that occur during cell divisions rather than by
environmental factors.
This is why males are more aggressive - Post Mutation
Syndrome.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. It probably shows that they Y chromosome has so
little information that errors occur very freely at no risk to
the offspring. A no-harm no-foul kind of thing.

This isn't my field, so I apologize if this question seems
elementary or uninformed.
Many of the "molecular clock" articles that I've read deal
with the Mitochondrial DNA, passing intact (barring mutations)
from mother to daughter. If indeed the males are driving the
rate of evolution does this study, if confirmed, mean that
some of those studies may be overestimating times between
genetic splits? Or would the MDNA change rate give a good
clock even with changes at the 'Y'?

Well, looks like it the fate of the male to continually do the
dirty work, including being the guinea pig for prototyping any
progress for the species! As with many other things, I guess
we are just the "expendables" in the game of genetic
mutations. If this particular DNA diddle doesnt work, what the
hey, it was just another "Y" clensing the gerome!
On the other hand, there are few of the distaff variety that
would not grant us the differences! 8-)
Vive la diference! ;-)

Not my field either!
mtDNA clock tells time (to the best of our ability to
understand it) on its own.
The article most of us saw started out with diseases and
then to driving force of evolution. Seems like it
over-stepped a bit.

Yep. We die early if we stumble across some bad gene or
another! Purifies the species, you know! ;-)
