Now that we have a Nutrition and Supplements forum I figured a list of resources would be a good idea.

Information on Supplements:

Supplementwatch.com (http://www.supplementwatch.com/) - information on supplements from A-Z (http://www.supplementwatch.com/supatoz/), reviews of supplements, a newsletter - there is a members' only area that you can access if you join (25$ ).

Wholehealthmd.com (http://www.wholehealthmd.com/) - Reference Libraries, 'expert' opinions and a vitamins/supplements section also from A-Z (http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/items_index/1,1538,HS,00.html).

EFA's - The Essential Fatty Acids (http://waltonfeed.com/omega/)

Drumlib on Green tea and thermogenesis (http://www.drumlib.com/dp/000018.htm)

More to come.

Don"t be afraid to meet with a naturopath, most health store deal with them and they are specifically trained to help you with supplements needs, which ones are right for you and in what dosage. It may take time to find the right one, which can be a bit costly, but most private insurances cover the costs (In Canada).

Another great resource is http://www.consumerlab.com/. They test supplements to make sure they contain the ingredients they are supposed to, and they have a lot of information about supplements and which ones have good evidence that they work. Although some of the info on the site is available only by subscription, most of it is free.

To elaborate on what I posted, I have been able to buy stack II as it was not recalled for some time from where I live. As it has been recalled now I've bought Stack 5, an ephedra free product.
The first time I tried it I felt as though it had given me a boost before my workout but after a week realsie it is not doing so and what's more I've eaten the same foods and feel/see myself putting on weight. My clothes feel tighter.
I'm distressed about it as workouts are not effective and I'm not at the same level of confidence in my appearance.
Are there any suggestions on what I can do to again boost my metabolism and get back to being fit?

More great info resources:

The Linus Pauling Institute has a Micronutrient page that includes many supplements. Very good information:

http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/contentnuts.html

PDR Health has great science-based info on nutritional supplements:

http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/index.shtml

And herbal medicines:

http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/herbaldrugs/index.shtml

It has good sections on prescription and OTC drugs as well.

I become overwhelmed when I start searching for information on nutrition and nutritional supplements. Sometimes I have a hard time figuring out whose recommendations to trust- although there are certainly no lack of "experts" out on the internet! Do any of you have any sites you really like to go to? I do have Dr. Atkin's vitanutrient book, but would like some additional sources, especially to keep current with any new information.

Thanks!

The Atkins Vita nutrients is a great book. The only problem is that it is copyrighted in 1998 -- 7 years ago. A lot has changed in 7 years.

A better book from Dr Atkins might be

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312977018/qid=1120215973/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

this book seems to put it all together

Websites include:

http://www.vitacost.com/science/index.html

http://www.worldhealth.net/p/anti-aging-desk-reference.html

as far as books

My favorite low carb book
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0758206232/qid=1120215833/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

Nice overview of all the low carb diets and low carb dieting

I would recommend Dr Ray Strand's books
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0785264868/qid=1120215112/sr=2-1/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

why eating a variety of foods, instead of supplements, is NOT a good idea

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0785264841/qid=1120216450/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

Why you need to get off (and avoid) prescription drugs and do the low carb diet, exercise, and supplements

Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743226615/qid=1120215423/sr=1-19/ref=sr_1_19/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

Earl writes a new book every month (or so it seems) so you might want to consider his newer books which I do not have

The companion book for the www.Worldhealth.Net link I gave you above.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1591200695/qid=1120215531/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

Then there are the Omega 3 books

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0684871394/qid=1120216877/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance&s=books

Sears, B. The Omega Rx Zone. Regan Books (HarperCollins). New York, NY (2002)
(can't find ISBN number)

Then there are the Testosterone (men's health) books
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0962741817/qid=1120217244/sr=5-1/ref=cm_lm_asin/103-4849176-6072656?v=glance

Finally, there is my favorite emerging doctor:
http://www.alsearsmd.com/
he has several books or sale that I highly recommend. Dr Al Sears also puts it all together - low carb, supplements, and exercise.

Have fun!

I apologize for posting men's stuff. I guess I saw the word "Daniel" and assumed. You know what happens when one assumes ...

The hormone stuff is very interesting. I am not sure what to recommend for the ladies -- since I have not studied that. I should say, I have studied the ladies but not ladies hormones ;).

But hormones play a very powerful role in our bodies. Since insulin is a very powerful hormone in people like us -- it is important to understand the effect it plays and how to rebalance our body's hormones. Since in our bodies insulin is way too high, and then other powerful hormones start kicking in because of too much insulin, many of our other hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen are thrown way out of balance.

For example, many men that feel "middle aged" may have more estrogen in their bodies then women that feel "middle aged".

But the first step is the low carb diet which cuts insulin, which cuts cortisol and other hormones. Then through supplements you can rebuild the other hormones to their proper states. I feel 20 years younger.

But if insulin remains high -- most likely the other hormones will remain messed up.

Good luck!

Here is what I was trying to remember:

I won't mention the obvious -- Dr Atkins books on low carbing but I will mention his other books. Many people are surprised to find out that Dr Atkins was as adamant about taking supplements as he was about consuming a low carb diet. BTW, if you don't want to pay the $10 per book, look in the top right corner for used. You often can get the books for $1 plus shipping.

One of his first books outside low carbing was

Dr. Atkins Vita Nutrient Solution. ISBN 0-684-84488-5. Excellent book but getting a little bit dated. This is one of the things I will miss most about Dr Atkins -- he won't get to update this book. The way that his "posse" has gone so politically correct -- I don't want their updates.

What supplements one should take is a very individualist concern. There are numerous studies/opinions that contradict each other. I have settled upon taking a multivitamin/mineral pill and some omega 3 capsules. There is no absolute authority on what is needed or what will solve any particular problem. Read what the 'authorities' have to say and make your own decision based upon you personal goals and who you believe.

I've tried just about every herb, vitamin + mineral on the planet and have come to the following list of stuff which DOES make a big difference to me mentally:

fish oil- depression. Even if it doesn't work on its own, it seems to make everything else work much better.
GLA - pmt/eczema
magnesium- sleep/depression/anxiety (da bomb imo)
vit C- cortisol/adrenaline control
ginseng - (expensive extract only) - calm energy
passiflora - much better than valerian for calmness
5htp - small doses only - depression/anxiety

Valerian has the opposite effect on me - it makes me hyper. I know several people who have this experience.

obviously you did not read the stuff above.

The reason so many people in the United States are unhealthy is because of poor nutrition. Hard to believe that people can eat so much and get so little ...

What levels of nutrition are required to reverse all the damage that has been done?

What levels of nutrition are required when losing weight and all those wastes trapped in your fat start pouring back into your body?

Does anyone have any recent info (since more and more supplements are being shown to contain unwanted and dangerous chemicals) on good, clean multivitamin supplements? I live in a small town and don't have access to stores with a lot of selection, but can order on line - if I know where to go and what to look for to ensure purity.

I have started to browse some of the websites mentioned in this thread, but I'm overwhelmed, don't have a lot of time to sift through the info and a condensed recommendations would be muh appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

Jett,

My two favorite brands of supplements, particularly for a daily vitamin, are Solgar and Bluebonnet. They're a little on the pricey side, compared to your regular grocery store fare (and can usually only be found at heath food stores), but are well worth it for the quality product you're receiving.

I know you can order them online, either at supplement retailers or even on Amazon.com.

I'd urge you to check out both their websites (just do a goole search using the brand names) so you can see what you'd be getting.

I hope this helps.

Asking the experts.......

Second time around for me on the low carb...and am feeling perplexed......probably because i am getting older......and well the older you get the........more crazy you get.....

Does anyone here have any experiance with dieretics? i tend to bloat especially when i work out, and havent in a week...i know the muscles absorb the water when they are not hydrated and know that weight gain is a result from this.....but what are your thoughts on dieretics in general? i did diurex last tom time and it saved me from going bald.....(pulling hair out)....Currently am weighing only once a week...which will probably change in a few.....i would so adore any additional information....positive or negative on taking this. i truly am thinking of continuing taking this for "THE" week before.....always

I take my vits and supps
multi
vit c 1,000 mg
vit b stress-complex
chrom picol 400 mg
omega 3 1200 mg
Calc mag & zinc 333 mg
patassium Gluc 550 mg

i drink a lot of water.(i usually get to my 99oz per)..i am currently taking it easy on the mill....average 1.5 miles per 1/2 hour (will mix it up before too long) I know not much but is much for me.....intend on adding some spice to my regime before too long.....

Would so love for the bloat to go away...any suggestions?

Oh i think i am in OK health otherwise....going to the doc in a month...havent been in 5 years....so who knows......with that being said...any suggestions?

Thanks....

edited to add....please dont "ripp me a new one" if this has already been asked. im sorry Im all about the quick fix at this time...come on Im a newbie...well here anyways.....but will come around and do some research before i post....that will happen in a few or so.....please educate me before i can educate myself!

I have used www.bodybuilding.com to learn a lot about supplements. There is a store side to the site and a content side to it. The content side has lots of information on supplement types and how they work and what they do. Super informative. Check it out.
