I have been reading where coconut oil is very helpfull for thyroid support so I bought a jar yesterday. I tried 1 tbs at dinner and my temp went up to 98.4 and stayed there till I went to bed.
This morning my waking temp was 96.7. It has been being 96.3. I took another tbs this morning with my coffee and within 15 minutes my temp was up to 97.6. Usually my temp barely gets up to 97 after an hour of cardio.
My TSH test came back 2.8 a few weeks ago. Doc says nothing is wrong and wont do a T3 or T4 but can't explain my low temps.
I bought the Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome book and am currently reading it and it sure sounds like what is going on with me.
I'll keep trying the coconut oil.

hi,
I too am hypo. I also read at www.thyroid.about.com that coconut oil was helpful for thyroid but now that I've heard that it's raising your temp maybe it's something I will consider taking. It may help with other symptoms as well. Thanks, hope it continues to work for you

It's hard to say. I have been following a CKD version of Atkins for the last 3 weeks and usually I gain from 5 to 10lbs during the carb-up and lose 1 to 2lbs per day the following week during the LC phase.

I started taking coconut oil in January, and am still using it. My body temperature has gone from 95.8 in the mornings to about 96.8. So in terms of improving my metabolism, it has helped somewhat. The weight started budging a little, but a couple of benefits that I did notice almost immediately were:
1. New hair regrowth.
2. Sleeping much better. Often would not sleep at all, and usually got no more than 4 or 5 hours per night.
3. My arthritis was noticeably improved.
I still take the coconut oil, because I feel that it is extremely beneficial in transporting the nutrients in your body. The coconut oil website contains much information about coconut oil being a medium chain fatty acid, vs a long chain fatty acid, as are most oils that we consume.
At the beginning of June, I started taking a new supplement and consequently I feel like I have discovered the fountain of youth. I am amazed at how great I feel, and how many improvements I have experienced with a lot of my symptoms.
Hi, I just recently recv'd my order of coconut oil. Could anyone give me advice on what to use it in. Thanks :)

Hi,
I use the coconut oil in place of all other oils in my cooking and baking. While I do not eat baked goods, my husband does and I feel it is beneficial for him as well.
I fry chicken in it, along with a little salt, pepper, garlic and paprika. Delicious.
Here is one of my favorite recipes.
Coconut Garlic shrimp.
1/2 lb of raw peeled tiger prawns or large shrimp, tail left on.
1 to 2 tbsp. coconut oil
2 tbsp chopped green onion.
crushed garlic to taste (the more the better in my opinion)
salt and pepper to taste.
1 to 2 tbsp lemon juice
Place 1 to 2 tbsp. of coconut oil in saute pan, over high heat. Oil should be just starting to smoke.
Add 2 tpsp chopped green onions and 1 tbsp garlic, or more to suit and salt and pepper taste.
Stir until these ingredients are just covered with the oil.
Keeping heat on high at all times, add 1/2 lb of raw tiger prawns or large shrimp, and stir until they just turn pink. Add 2 tbsps lemon or lime juice and stir quickly for about 15 to 30 seconds. Serve with Caesar salad without the croutons.
If you are cooking more than 1/2 lb, repeat until you are finished.
MMMMMMMM good!
Thanks for the recipe, sounds yummy :)

Thanks for sharing khala, That is great news about your experience with coconut oil.
My experiment continues this week. Last week I was on a business trip and took a vacation from everything. No exercise, no metabolism boosters or anything. I even took a break from LC'ing but I kept the carbs below 100g per day.
I took the coconut oil everyday 1tbls each morning and my energy level stayed high all day. A few days I forgot to take it and my energy level was noticably lower.
I'm back on induction for the next 2 weeks with the coconut oil.
This mornings waking temp was 96.6 and 25 minutes later after taking the coconut oil it is 97.5.

Hi, all...this is interesting! I can understand cooking w/ coconut oil, but if you just "take it w/ coffee", how is that done? Does one simply swallow a spoonful of it? Stir it into the coffee? Spread it on toast? Inquiring minds want to know!
Many thanks in advance....

Will someone please explain to me the specific type of Coconut Oil that is recommended, and where to find it?
I initially thought this was a bad idea, because of the saturated fats. One of the moderators informed me that this is not the case because of the lack of hydrogenation.
Since then, I've tried to find some to try for myself. The problem is two-fold: I either can't find it, or what I do find is not the type I suspect I need!
I would appreciate anyone's feedback on where to find the kind you guys are all talking about.
Thanks!!

There is really only one kind of coconut oil...look for it in the health food stores. May be in the fridge.
It's white, solid at room temperatures and really has no taste, not even of coconut.
It is a saturated fat, but not hydrogenated, so no trans fats.
Take care....
PS: I'm still waiting for someone to say just how they are using it. I made the coconut prawns, and they were good. Then I fried chicken drumsticks in it, and they came out very crisp and everybody loved them. How else are you folks using it?
Thank you in advance....

IMHO, the "explanation" is that you need a better nutritionist! And read about it. There's lots of info on the WWW for you. :)

O.K., folks. I am destined for hypothyroid. Every female in my mother's family has it, and I am showing signs that it's coming - hair loss, etc. - but have so far not tested positive in the doctor's office. I know I need to do the temperature thing. It's somewhere toward the top of an overwhelmingly large to-do pile on my desktop.
But here's my question. When your body temperature is low, do you FEEL cold, like do you get goosebumps all over your body (I call them "cold flashes")? I can't seem to get warm. I sleep in a union suit with wool socks under a comforter. (Please note that I am also anemic - on Atkins - quite a trick, right, with all that red meat. The anemia problem is related to TOM and I am getting on top of that problem). I bought some coconut milk yesterday, and am about to see how it makes me feel.
This is such a great thread! Can someone please send me some warm thoughts?

Many doctors are beginning to believe that a low body temperature is the best test to determine hypothyroidism. Blood tests do work, but the problem is whether the doctors will test enough of your hormones, and then read them all in conjunction with one another. In any event, many doctors are beginning to believe that is just secondary to the low body temperature. Anything under 98.0 on a regular basis is what they deem a sign of hypothyroidism. For reference, my mother was undiagnosed hypothyroid for 12 years, and underdiagnosed for 20 more, and before starting new meds her temp barely broke 97.0.
When you do have a low body temperature, a result of hypothyroidism, you are plagued with cold. I could never get myself warm - my husband thought I was nuts when I would put on sweaters because it dipped below 80 [we live in Arizona]. Our house was never allowed to fall below 84 degrees inside. Sensitivity to cold is just one of the many signs of hypothyroidism.
There are more - I'll post some of them here to give you a clue. They are, unfortunately, generally used as adjectives to describe women as they age. It is unfortunate, because women do not realize that these are abnormal - and continue to suffer needlessly. They are:
Fatigue
Lethargy
Sensitivity to Cold
Depression
Mood Swings
Hair Loss
Trouble losing weight
Swelling of joints
Constipation
Decreased sex drive
Dry Skin
Dry Hair
Dry & Brittle Nails
Brain Fog
The more you have, the more likely it is that you are hypothyroid - especially if you have low body temp. Further, the following makes you more susceptible to developing a thyroid problem:
giving birth
family history
past thyroid problems [once hypothyroid, always hypothyroid]
goiter problems
history of smoking
For me, I had only a family history. Keep in mind though that my doctor believes that 60% of women are hypothyroid today, and most do not know it. What this means is that when you get tested against the "normal" population, this includes a significant amount of undiagnosed thyroid sufferers - hence, you are not actually being tested against the right population. If there is anyone in your family that is or was a hypothyroid sufferer, you need to be keenly aware of your risk.
Now, what can you do about it?
Going to a doctor is obviously step one - but which doctor is a really hard question to answer. You need to find a doctor educated on thyroid issues, and there aren't that many who are. Worse, many think they are. I would give your family doctor a shot first - see what tests they want to run on you. Ultimately, you are going to need to have your low body temperatures documented for them, and you will need to get the following tests run:
T3
Free T3
T4
Free T4
TSH
Reverse T3
You do need all of these taken. If your doctor doesn't accept these tests or interpret them, then they are not your doctor right. There is one out there, though, and if you are interested in figuring out how to find him please feel free to drop me an e-mail and I will help you get there. It's so much easier when you have support - thanks to my mom, I was able to fight for four years before finally being diagnosed. Starting medication has changed my life 100%, in every possible way. I want to share that with anyone willing to listen!!
You can catch me at thyroid~justice.com [that little squiggly is an "at" sign]. Anyone can drop me an e-mail, and I will gladly e-mail with you for as long as it takes to get to you on track!!

The following recipe is for protein bars. I am still tweaking...any additions would be appreciated.
I have not used any other artifical sweetener to make these, so I have no idea how they would turn out. I do know that maltilol (http://www.greenbeanz.com/whatismaltitol.html) behaves similar to how real sugar does.
The next batch I make I will use try equal amounts of oil and milk. I may reduce the amount of maltilol to 1/2 cup.
I have made these the vanilla praline and french vanilla flavors. So far, I prefer the vanilla praline.
Protein Bars
1. coconut oil 7T
2. coconut milk 2T
3. natural peanut butter 4T
4. vanilla extract 1T
5. sea salt 1/2 tsp
6. maltilol 2/3 cup
7. unsweetened coconut 1 cup
8. Designer Whey protein powder (any flavor) 4 scoops
9. optional: 2 ounces crushed nuts
In a heavy pan over medium heat, combine 1-5 stirring well. Add 6, stir until dissolved. Remove pan from heat. Add 7 (and 9 if you are using nuts) and stir well. Add 8 and stir well. Pour into a rectangular pan and press using the back of a spoon or spatula. Coo and cut into 10 bars. Keep refrigerated.

Thanks to Thyroid_M for the long post in answer to my question. It has taken a long time for me to reply - I really do feel too busy to take care of things that seem important at the moment. I've got to get re-organized.
I am coming up due for an annual visit to the doctor in the next few months (I have to get through the holidays here), and I will look into the testing that you suggested. In the meantime, I am bundling up. Maybe I can get it together enough to take my temperature and see if I notice a pattern. I need to read back through this thread and see if there is good information on the type of thermometer to use, etc. For me, it has to be pretty simple. I am a busy working mother with alot on my plate.
But again, thanks for your quick and comprehensive reply. I will try and post again as I move toward figuring this all out.

Having raised my now 20 and 18 y.o. son and daughter mostly by myself, I totally understand what your life is about. In fact, I blame my stressful life for my thyroid slowing down. I had so many side effects with the medication because 2 weeks earlier I was started on HRT and all those hormones are hard to balance. Eventually naturopathic treatment brought great improvement and I've been off thyroid meds for over a year now but I've had low energy levels which I trace to fluctuations in my body temperature which at one point last year had gone back to 98.6 and then dropped again to no more than 97.5.
But since I discovered coconut oil, my temperature has been going up as well. I spent months not being able to lose weight and easily gained back what I lost at the beginning of last year. In '01 I went down to 131 lbs. and after 9/11 began to "stress-eat", but I'm hoping now will be different so I encourage you to try the coconut oil.
I buy "Spectrum" brand either at a healthfood store for under $5/14 oz. jar, or I order it with my other supplements at Vitanet (www.store.yahoo.com/vitanet/), their prices are really good, packing is excellent, regular shipping is $5.95 (I think) but they have an online coupon for $1. This oil smells and tastes "coconuty" so sometimes I just take it straight from a spoon (and love it!). I also buy coconut milk at the supermarket and use it in many things, like my protein shake instead of milk. And 2 days ago I bought a coconut from the produce section, opened 3 little holes where the "eyes" are with a big nail and hammer, drained the water (which I later drank chilled and sweetened artificailly) and then placed the coconut in my mini-oven for a few minutes to heat up, then hammered it on the floor and the shell came off almost all by itself. I put the pieces in a container and I just eat pieces of it when I want a snack. Goya also sells frozen unsweetened grated coconut which is really good.
Hey Lisan, I'm near P.B. Lakes Blvd. & Okeechobee, where are you? Need a "diet budy"? I'm here!

I too fear I am destined for thyroid disease. My mother nearly died from an undiagnosed condition - she went into a coma from it. 3 of my sisters have been diagnosed with it. I so far have come away clean, but I am always, always cold. I would love to hear more about that amino acid complex you're referring to!
And I'm out to buy some coconut oil to see if it makes a difference.

Maybe I will see if I can find that coconut oil... Great info in this thread...

96.8 - After breakfast.
96.1 - ~ 10:55 am

I just bought 2qts of coconut oil from www.tropicaltraditions.com. Talk about rich & coconutty!! I couldn't get a spoonful down last night - it was just too much. So now I'm trying to brainstorm what I can put it on to make it go down better. I cooked my omelet in it this morning, which made it very puffy and rich (nice), but I think I need to eat more than that to make a difference!
I've been taking my waking temps for natural family planning for the last month, and have never once had a waking temp lower than 97 degrees. Usually I'm right around 97.2 - 97.8 when I'm not ovulating. I think I'd get checked out if I were clear down in the 93 degree range!!!

93.3 upon waking
97.7 at 6:58 after breakfast

97.5 at 9:30 pm
now I am headed to bed.. will try this again tomorrow... this is very interesting... and I plan on ordering some of that coconut oil from that site... again thanks

jraz, from what I've read, it's your basal body temp 1st thing in the morning (before rising) that counts. I've read in some places that you can use a digital basal thermometer in your mouth & in others that you need to use a regular basal thermometer in your armpit for 10min. I guess there's a difference between a regular fever thermomter & a basal one. Not sure exactly what the difference is though.
Most of the sources I've read say to take your basal body temp 5 mornings in a row. If you're a pre-menopausal woman, you need to make sure you do this during your period. (Otherwise your temps will be effected by your ovulation cycle.) Throw out the lowest & average the rest. If it comes out to under 97.5 (and boy does it sound like yours will), it says to get to the doctor for some blood tests.
Worried about you - 93 sounds really low!
As far as the coconut oil, had an interesting experience with it last night. Managed to get a teaspoonful & a halfe down plain - was a lot like eating a spoonful of butter, which is a little beyond me too. Then I added a heaping tablespoonful to 1/4 cup of plain yogurt (did you know that sugar-free yogurt really only has 4g carbs/cup, despite what the package says?!). Added 1/4 cup berries and stirred it up good. There were little coconut oil chunks in there, but it wasn't too bad at all. I'll definitely do it again.
Anyway, I was doodling around the house doing this & that, and wandered into the bathroom to put something in the cabinet. Caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and to my utter surprise - my usually very pale face had color in it! That's very, very unusual for me. Plus, I was only wearing one layer of sweats and wasn't cold at all - in fact, I got rather warm even though I was down in the cold basement working with the dogs. (Usually I'll wear a t-neck, t-shirt, sweatshirt, and fleece sweatpants to be comfortable in our 70 degree house.)
Definitely something I'm going to continue experimenting with. Looking for more ways to get the stuff inside me without having to eat it plain though!!! Maybe tomorrow I'll try to make some of that "mock walnut bread" - the stuff where you put walnuts through the food processer, add an egg, and bake. Might be OK to spread coconut oil on.
jraz, please let me know if you get in to see the doctor!!

95.4 at 8:50 am (before leaving for church)
96.3 at 1;50 pm, just after a 2 mile power walk
94.2 at 4:10 pm, just before a nap..lol
96.5 at 9:35 pm, just got home from church....
Could you please give me that recipe for the mock walnut bread.. that sounds good....

While at the doctors yesterday for my blood in the urine episode I decided to tell her abut my temps and experiences and she proceeded to tell me... that she does believe I have a thyroid problem, but because my last blood test came back normal that she can't put me on thyroid medicine and that she would dearly love to and she believes what Dr. Atkins is sayng, but the FDA or Medical something or other would come down on doctors so fast if they started prescribing thyroid meds when the blood tests are coming back normal.... grrrr, but I understand where she is coming from... So guess what... It will be coconut oil for me....
Hope I explained this ok...

JRaz,
Do you know what blood work your doctor took? Your experience sounds identical to something I experienced . . . That is exactly what my doctor told me in June of 2000 before prescribing me to Prozac . . . which made me change doctors, and this new doctor took additional blood work of me that did show a thyroid problem. The other doctor just did a TSH check, and didn't follow up on T3 or T4 levels at all. Just curious if you are in a similar situation as I was. Perhaps this would be something for you to consider, if your doctor didn't follow up on these areas.
Also, please let me know how your experiences with coconut oil go. I've heard that they have helped others out a lot, and am really excited to try it myself . . . but I still can't find it anywhere! I've had people let me know where to look and what to look for, but I still can't find it. If you are able to find it, maybe you could tell me what you did to get there. I would also appreciate hearing how your experiences on it go.

Hi,
I ordered coconut oil from www.tropicaltraditions.com
It was a pretty penny but I wanted to try it. I keep my house at 68 degrees, so it solidifies and looks just like white lard. I am trying it, but it is quite hard to swallow in any way shape or form in my opinion. My local health food stores say they carry it, but none of them have it. At $25.00 for one quart, I just don't know how much I will allow myself to use it. It is not a native food to my climate, so it is very unreasonable. The more I try it, the more it seems to nauseate me even though I like the mild taste of coconut.
I also made the cookies from the recipe you sent me for thyroid health. I appreciate you sending the recipe, but the cookies are awful! I really am not a negative person, but they are very difficult to eat. My 25 year old daugther tried them, and she said they make nice dog bisquits!
Oh well, live and learn I say. But I did order the book: "The Thyroid Diet Health Guide" and I hope to get some better suggestions from that. But I have my doubts. I paid over $12.00 for something that came in the mail that looks like a marketing magazine - not even a real book.

I just ordered some from Tropical Traditions... I ordered a quart to start... and today I went to our health food store and they had Coconut Oil by Spectrum Essentials for skin and health care... It says it's 100% refined coconut oil and contains no preservatives or additives... the lady assured me it was ok to injest, even tho it does not say this on the jar... they have a website at spectrumorganic.com that I will go check out... anyway I paid $5.45 for 15 fl oz.... not bad I thought.. It is in a solid state and says to place jar in a pan of warm water...
I made some of the chocolate mousse and put about a tbs in it and mixed it up... this has no smell, no flavor either... hey, I'm a willing to try it... so we'll see..

Not sure the kind of blood tests that were done.. It's been a couple of months.... yesterday all she did was a unine test and was going to send it for a culture... not sure what that will tell her... Of course I am on an HMO through work and don't have a say so in a lot the doctors around here say... and I am not impressed with any doctor we have around here.... I go back to her Monday and will post what she tells me... in the mean time... it will be coconut oil for me.... and hope and pray it makes a big difference... but NO HOT FLASHES.... LOL. I hate being HOT.... and guess where I live... Where it's usually the hottest place in the nation... hahaha go figure...

My temperature is also low so I tried Coconut Oil and I noticed
a change in temperature from 95.6 up to 97.6. I started on the Atkins diet 2 weeks ago and I'm not having any problems getting into and staying in ketosis.
I found Coconut Oil and Coconut Butter. Nutritionally is there any difference? I use them both just in case.
I seem to have a lot of symptoms that point to me being Hypo. (rough voice, low temp, tired feeling and more)
Is it possible to have a thyroid problem and still be able to go into ketosis. I have lost 4 to 5 pounds in these two weeks.
I had a lot of success on the Atkins diet last year when I went down to 160 from 200 pounds, but I started on carbs again and went up to 194 and now I'm down to 189 in two weeks on the Atkins diet. I feel a lot better but not as good as I felt when I first tried it. Am I Hypo?
Can anyone relate to this....Ron L

Welcome and Relate... boy, I think you wrote my life story... I sure do hope the coconut oil does the trick for both you and I... I've been so busy since Thursday that I have not even had time to take my coconut oil or take my temps... Do hope this next week evens out a little. I've been so busy (this is a good thing) but I am too tired to be tired....
I am just thankful someone discovered this coconut oil and I pray it is the answer for us...

I agree with THYROID_M that it's important to find out which tests you were given. I'll go even a step further by telling you that even T4 and T3 levels don't tell the whole story. Most people who have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis show a "normal" TSH level and possibly even T4 and T3 level but will have a high count of certain types of antibodies which block the cell receptors from absorbing the hormone and additional thyroid hormone is the only treatment to date.
I bet 20 to 1 your doctor didn't run those tests so ask for them, if he refuses, FIRE HIM (or go to an endo). For more info, go to www.thyroid.about.com and enter a search for antibodies or read all you can about Hashi's.
Also, the oil you bought is refined (hence the lack of smell and taste) and is really meant for beauty care, nutritionally it can't do what the virgin oil does. Spectrum has an organic, expeller-pressed one which is the one I'm using. If I were you I'd take it back to the h/f store for a refund because it's not the one you were asking about.

Raquel has a good point about finding out whether your doc took those tests, and then demanding your doctor [or another] do them for you. I had normal TSH levels, but also had high levels of binding proteins [term per my doc!] that in effect nullified the hormones secreted by my thyroid gland, and have a mild form of Hashimotos.
Raquel - can you tell me where you bought your coconut oil?? I still am doing without, but I'm glad you posted because I want to make sure when I get mine I can get it at the right place. I was planning on purchasing some at www.tropicaltraditions.com, and just haven't gotten around to it. Does this location sell the coconut oil you use?
Thanks!

Although a couple of h/f stores in my area carry the right kind of "Spectrum" coconut oil, because I don't have a car right now I ordered it online from Vitanet, along with my other supplements, for $4.08 the 14 oz. jar.
The only thing is that I just looked it up and they are showing the semi-refined oil. Fearing it was discontinued, I looked up Spectrum's website and didn't see it there at all either so I decided to call their toll-free number. To my chagrin I was told that the unrefined oil is going to be discontinued in a couple of months and in the future they will only have one that is organic, non-chemically refined (through sort of a filtration process) kind which is odorless and tasteless. I was told it will be heated somewhat and it will not contain the natural enzymes but the lauric acid content should remain pretty much the same.
I felt really bummed by this and plan to call Vitanet tomorrow to see if they still have it or can get it for me so I can order several jars at once. I suggest you do the same if you want to save.

So, the coconut oil needs to be virgin and unrefined? I found on the Tropical Traditions site the quote "This Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut oil is a truly unrefined coconut oil." at http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/virgin_coconut_oil.htm
Do you think this is it?
Raquel
Mon, Jan-27-03, 19:56
Yes, I guess that's the real article. I'd go with the words "organic" or "virgin" and definitely unrefined.

The coconut oil that I have is made by Omega Nutrition and they call it Coconut Butter. Its Unhydrogenated, Organic, Pure Coconut Oil.
Is this the right stuff?
I also have Coconut Oil made by the same company. On the label it says: "Naturally saturated, non-hydrogenated, our Coconut Oil is expeller pressed without the use of solvents, additives, chemicals and bleaching."
They are at www.omeganutrition.com

I got my virgin coconut oil from tropicaltraditions.com
It smells and tastes like a very light and pleasant coconut confection. I think it is true quality but is very expensive in my opinion. But I splurged because I wanted to try it. I even popped popcorn in it! It surprised me though how it looks like white lard. My house is only kept at 68 degrees, so it solidifies in those temperatures.
I will admit I am having trouble incorporating 3 tablespoons a day. It takes creatitivity for something I am not used to having. I certainly have not been consistent with it yet, which I think would be beneficial if I was.
Any suggestions out there on how to incorporate it in our daily diet?

I ordered a quart from Tropical Traditions and it came by UPS on Tuesday.... YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well yesterday and today the way I am fixing it right now (just because of time and work).. I made me a hot protein shake and put it in it... Take for example what I did this morning... In my shaker cup I put my dry protein powder... (Vanila Praline) and added 1 tsp coco and 2 splenda and then put 2 heaping TBS of Coconut Oil and brought it to work with me.. Then I filled the container with HOT water and mixed it up and Yum..... very good.. and I am getting my coconut oil.... Really has a good taste...
and the other good news... my temp this morning at 8:10 am was 97.8.......whoo hooooooooooo... and that's only after taking this new coconut oil a couple of times.... so I am pleased so far....
Now, back to work for me and my delicious hot protein drink... yum
PS...seems the warmth of the liquid with the coconut oil really brings out the flavor of the coconut and I love it....... oh btw, yesterday I added a tsp of peanut butter to mine and it was wonderful....
ok, IBEGONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use coconut oil on my ceaser salad.
I mix olive oil with garlic, macadamia nut butter, ceaser dressing and coconut oil to taste. I don't use exact measerments everytime so its always a bit different and I like it.
I don't have any yeast related problems so the ceaser dressing works for me.
Hope this helps...Ron L

Hi, everyone! I just read all the posts, and was convinced to try the coconut oil. I found it very easily at Whole Foods Market. Here is my question - how much should I take a day? Yesterday and today I took one tablespoon, just straight out of the jar. It is good, but then, I like to eat butter straight. I am hoping for a kick start to my metabolism, as my thyroid has me totally stalled.
Thanks for any info, by the way, alot of you were talking about amino acids. I swear by them, they haven't helped my thyroid, to my knowledge, but they completely cured my allergies. I would highly recommend the book "The Amino Revolution" By Robert Erdmann, PHD. It is a great book, easy to read and has helped me and numerous friends and relatives. I was on Allegra, the allergy eyedrops, and Nasonex, and getting shots. Three months on aminos, and I dropped all of those meds.
Have a great day!!

Thank you for this good info. I have been Hypo for 5 years. I have also been overweight for 8 years. I gained 40 lbs over a 3 year period before I figured out I was hypo. I have been on Synthroid ever since but the weight has not dropped off. It is such hard work to get it off. And a very slow process. Plus I have been having a very hard time getting my thyroid regulated. They usually have to change my dosage every 6 months or so and the symptoms have never totally gone away (hair loss, fatigue etc) I bought some coconut oil today at my local heath food store and am praying it works. I am getting desperate as I have been in a stall for over a month and my weight loss is very very slow.

Most of the information I've read on the net say that you need to have virgin, unrefined coconut oil to get the thyroid benefits. And that refined coconut oil has no taste.
I'll be interested to see your results from the tasteless stuff. The virgin, unrefined stuff I got from tropicaltraditions.com is spendy, but I'm happy with the results. I can definitely tell by charting my temps when I don't get my coconut oil. I've been charting waking temps for natural family planning, so I have a baseline to work from, pre-coconut oil. A few days ago my waking temp dropped to 97.3 at a point in my cycle that it doesn't normally drop. I hadn't seen a temp that low in weeks. Made me stop & think. Sure enough, I'd missed coconut oil for 2 days.
Please post back on whether you get the same results from the cheaper, refined stuff. I do not relish spending money where I don't have to!

Hi! I bought Spectrum Naturals coconut oil, it says it is expeller pressed unrefined coconut oil. It smells like coconut, and has a slight coconut taste, and looks like crisco. Is this stuff okay? It was $4.00 at Whole Foods Market. How much should one take of this a day?
Thanks!!!!!

I like Hound got the one from TropicalTraditions... and I like it a lot.. I bought the Spectrum form our health food store, but it's more for the skina nd hair... and it does work when I take it... been so busy at work that I've had a hard time taking it there... like today.. I am drinking it right now in a protein shake that I heated in the microwave...
Hound, I posted the results from the doctor on one of these threads, just don't remember where...she said I probably have a thyroid problem, but because my blood work comes back ok, she can't do anything to help me without getting into trouble... so I am on my own....grrrrrrr

Steffie,
I just got my coconut oil in the mail yesterday, and I'm hopeful it will help me, too. I am curious, since you are on Synthroid and hypo and still having symptoms of hypo [weight issues] have you ever considered your T3 levels? T3 is the hormone in your thyroid gland that controls energy levels & metabolism, and there is no T3 in Synthroid. That is an area for you to possibly consider. My mom was on Synthroid for 20 years, and when she started a T3 replacement medication she's lost 33 pounds in the past 6 months.
I am looking forward to finding ways to use my coconut oil . . . I've seen some ideas posted here, and will try and use them. The Caesar Salad idea is very interesting - I'm gonna have that for lunch tomorrow and see how it is.
In the meantime, if anyone has any good ideas on how I can use it, I'm all ears!
Margie :-)

From reading all the responses, I can clearly see that I am the only one who can't stand the taste of the stuff. No matter how I tried to get it ingested, it has a heavy aftertaste and just overpowers everything I mix it with. I really hate the taste and can't even choke it down. I hope it works for the rest of you :daze:

Hi fernvalley...I don't like the taste either for the same reasons. BUT after only 3 days I notice a big difference in my energy and overall "peppiness" within 15 minutes of taking it. So, I liquify and have my diet coke on the ready...shoot the oil and chase it with some diet coke. But I'm considering putting it in some lc coco?? Gotta find something because it works for me but the taste is horrendous ... might be due to the fact that I don't like COCONUT to begin with!!!:Puke:
My question...if I were to cook my eggs in it..does all the oil get into the eggs??
And I meant to ask jessea...the jar you bought at Whole Foods...was it in the supplement section or the oil section...I foundm y jar in the oil section....

Hi! The coconut oil I got was at Whole Foods in the oil section, by the sesame oil, and the other cooking oils. Took me awhile to find it, I thought it would be with the supplements!
I eat it straight out of the jar, I think it's yummy! Also, I noticed another benefit from the coconut oil, it is great for stomach aches.

But I don't know how you eat it right out of the jar?!?! That's nuts to me! But...like I said...I HATE COCONUT!! BUT I tried making some hot coco (halfnhalf, cocoa, splenda) last night and put a big dolop in it. I drank it before my workout and the workout went alot quicker because I had good, even energy eventhough I worked for 9 hours yesterday!
I'm so glad it's working for me...

Talk about neccessity is the mother of inventions.
Here's what I found to do with coconut oil to consume it:
1. Melt 2 tablespoons of oil in a cup, add two tablespoons of low carb peanut butter. And its easy to eat, err drink.. depending on how warm it is. Tasty and for me its 3 carbs.
2. Fish tastes delicious cooked in coconut oil! It was great.
3. Instead of oil I used melted coconut oil and the dressing was even better... just got to use it quick although if you store it in a plastic bag (like for work) it melts in the palm of your hand (still in the bag of course) :D
Any one with other ideas.
Oh one bad idea, Don't put in your tea. I had a whole cup of coconut fatty oily tea to drink. Never again!

I guess I'm going to have to go to the bodega (latin grocery store) and get some more coco oil. I use it on my hair and skin in the summer, but never thought to fry in it! It works wonders on the hair and skin. Now I find out it is good to ingest it. Who would of thunk it. Read a lot of the info at different sites ( just search the benefits of coconut oil) and it seems amazing. This is why I come to this site. A wealth of info. Thanks.

Oh My! I wish I had found out about coconut oil months ago! I started taking it about 2 weeks ago, and broke a stall that I have been in for MONTHS! In December I overindulged and my weight went from 126 to 132. Then it would fluctuate from 132 to 138, I would keep coming back to 132, but could not budge from there. One bite over the line and back up the next morning. Plus the feelings of being oh so tired, cold, depressed..... I hit 129.5 this morning, and I know it is from the edge from taking the coconut oil. I take about 3-4T over the course of the day. Carbs are under 20. And while I don't have the energy level to run a marathon, I no longer feel like a slug! And something I did notice was unusual, I wasn't cold. Didn't think about it until my daughter was saying she was cold, and I felt fine. It has always been the other way around. So the stuff is working for me!

Does Pure canned coconut milk have the same benefits as the oil? Should we just use the thick cream and not the water part of the milk?
How much should we use of the cream?
How long will it keep in the fridge in a covered bowl like tupperware?

No, I don't think so. Check out these links for info:
http://thyroid.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://coconut%2Dinfo.com/weight%2Dloss.htm
http://www.coconutoil-online.com/guide.html
I don't understand the entire science of it, but it has to do with coconut oil being a MCT type of oil, and our bodies process it differntly than LCT types of oil.
But like butter and skim milk come from the same product, whole milk, we get different benifits from the butter and skim milk, they are not interchangeable. Both are healthy foods, just different.
Happy reading!

First let me say that auto immune problems AND hypothyroidism run in my family. My mother is hypoT, and diagnosed with fibromyagia, I am hypoT and have most of the fibro symptoms, my Grandmother on my moms side has awful arthritis like syptoms, my Grandmother on my dads side died at 40 from MS (which also has autoimmune links I believe)...
I've always felt like a auto immune time bomb waiting to go off. I have been on Synthroid for years, but I've always felt it was way under treated even though I have the lab work done every 6 months and it says it is ok. (HA! wait till next time I'm gonna demand thyroid antibody testing!) I've had the ANA testing done before and it was borderline enough that with the symptoms I was having my Doctor ordered a CAT scan to rule out MS, but of course you can't really rule it out, you can just say "well, we don't see anything yet".
Since I have been doing Atkins, I've been trying to take a more active roll in my health and improve it across the board... so tonight, I go out in search of some coconut oil... :) I will let you know how it goes in a few weeks. (I also have a very low body temp, even when I had a horrible UTI, my "fever" was only 97 degrees, which could be why I couldn't fight the darn thing so well)
I'm so glad I found this site!!!

From www.spectrumnaturals.com
"There’s some evidence that vegetable saturates (coconut oil, palm oil) behave differently in the body than animal saturates (butter, animal fat in meat). Lauric, caprylic and palmitic acids -- all of which are vegetable saturates -- are being extensively studied. More research will be necessary before conclusions can be drawn. For now, Spectrum recommends limiting consumption of all types of saturated fats."

Well I did finally find some coconut oil at the local health food place. But I have been really lax in getting it in everyday. I can't just eat it straight *shivers*. So far I've cooked with it once, and used it in hot tea... but this isn't hot tea weather. I don't do hot cereal, so any suggestions for ingesting it that I can stomach on a daily basis??
I thought about mixing it with some splenda if I don't come up with something else... maybe some splenda and cocoa? LOL, make a kind of chocolate paste... I think I will try that, but still I am open to suggestions.
potatofree
Wed, Jul-02-03, 21:03
Your "chocolate paste" idea isn't too far off.. I've done it  I melt it, add the pre-melted kind of cocoa (that comes in little pouches), some Diabetisweet, then the "tricky part"... while whisking, I add cold heavy cream. The cold makes it set up in a hurry. I've even added some shredded unsweetened coconut. It's like fudge.
Okay!! I really WAS bored that day, and in need of chocolate.
I've used it when I make low-carb bread, in place of the cooking oil.
I tried the salad dressing idea like the article said, but wasn't too happy. When it hits the cold lettuce, it "sets up" and separates from the dressing. Greasy lettuce... :Puke:
I'm in the experimental stages of using it in mousse... I whip heavy cream with sweetener, flavored extract, then drizzle the liquified oil in slowly when the cream is nearly whipped. I haven't gotten the amounts and/or timing right yet though.
I'm anxious to see what other people are doing with it!

I do take it straight off a spoon, but prefer using it in various ways. Cooking my eggs (scrambled so it gets mixed in), "buttering" my low-carb bagel, on veggies. I have mixed it with unsweetened coconut and munched as a snack, mixed with cream cheese and spenda to make the cheese cake thing. Have to agree about the salad, not good.

Hi, my name is Kathy and I am fairly new to this forum. I am very interested in any info you can send me on coconut oil and amino acid. Right now I am taking Levozyl and cytomel after having my thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer. Since this happened 15 months ago the Dr. has changed my meds so many times and can not seem to get it right. Either I feel good during the day and have a lot of energy but can't sleep at night or they reduce my meds and I sleep good at night but have a difficult time during the day. All I want to do is sleep. So I am very interested in any thing that can help me feel better. I have been on the induction phase since Easter. (went off it for one week when my dad passed away 3 weeks ago). I have lost weight but it seems to come off very slow. I wonder if it is due to low metabolism. If you could send me the info I would greatly appreciate it.

Last Spring I lost 56 lbs in 3 months. The year before I lost 34. I always seem to gain it back during the Winter, my nickname should be Yo-Yo! In February I was right back up to 200 lbs. and really mad at myself for putting it back on, Again. I decided that I'm going to "choose life" and get healthy and not just concentrate on loosing weight. I'm border Thyroid (my Mother had a goiter and major thyroid issues). Now, I'm having trouble getting it off again and thought this might have something to do with it. I am very interested in everyone's comments on how it helps Hypothyroid and raises the body temp. I also read in First magazine, according to Vanderbilt University here in TN, about Coconut oil and it stats that Coconut oil speeds calorie burning by 50% by going directly to the liver. It is so biologically stable that it doesn't form Trans fats so it is great for baking and frying. So I tried cooking with it last night. I took 2 to 3 tbs of it and heated in a frying pan on med-high heat. Put a boneless-skinless chicken breast half in;cut out in bite size pieces. After about 5 to 10 mins. of cooking (white all the way through) I put about 2 cups of chopped cabbage and half med. chopped onion and stir fryed. The smell was a little unbareable. I seasoned it with some Cajun spices and it was so freaking good! Almost like cheating with Chinese food without all the MSG! I found out that it cooks faster and hotter with Coconut oil than veg or corn oil does and is very good for stir frying and tastes great. Well, I didn't loose any weight this morning (so it's not some magical cure for fat) but I didn't gain any either like I thought after eating all that oil last night and I know I will have to continue to eat healthy like this for it to work-plus exersize and drink water. I also read that a glass of tomatoe juice daily boosts energy and speeds slimming because it is loaded with essential enzymes. And can you believe it, Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital research says that the fatty acid in avocados, olives, nuts and sees (flax, pumpkin, & sunflower) boost metabolism and speed weight loss and those who ate the high fatty goodies were an average of 11 lbs lighter than those who shuned fat all together? What about that? ok-so how is everyone doing with the Coconut oil? Any good food ideas? Any ideas on how to keep it off? I started the end of May on low carbs and have lost 18 lbs-I don't want to put it back on ever. I still have almost 40 to go. :daizy:

The chicken and cabbage sounds good, can't wait to try. I have been out of coconut oil for a week and miss it! Fed Ex is due here in a few days with a new supply!
I was wondering about the tomato juice though. 1 cup a day would be 10 grams of carbs. I know there are lots of nutrients in tomato products, but 10 grams a day for a glass of juice? I think that would slow me down big time.

Mon, Jul-14-03, 09:39
Oh no Cindielyn, it doesn't slow you down at all!! As a matter of fact, it is flushing my system out big time. Besides, 10 carbs is not really a big deal-the tomato juice boost energy and that right there burns it right back off. Well, I was really skeptical about all the high fat; coconut oil, sunflower seeds, tomato juice... however, since I started doing this a week ago I have lost 5 lbs. It's not water weight either, I did that already at the beginning of my new start, the end of May. I have a lot of energy and actually want to drink water! Sometimes you get bored with water because it really doesn't have that quenching feeling you know. Well, my metabolism is working hard. I get kind of hot like I've been working out and kind of thirsty so I get a tall glass of cold water and it tastes so good. Also, they are right on when they talk about eating the nuts and seeds (sunflower). It really is helping me not to crave snacks so much after work or when I watch TV. I don't get just the seeds, I eat the whole ones in the shell so it crunches (which is very satisfying for snackers) when I crack it open it gives me something to do with my hands while I watch TV and keeps me from downing a bag of chips. I also end up drinking a lot of water at the same time (you can get unsalted whole sunflower seeds if you worry about the sodium). Also, I have read that cherries are great for you as well. They are a natural stress reliever and sweet so they keep you away from the cookies. Another TV snacking trick is frozen blackberries. I get fresh blackberries and divide them up into freezer baggies (about a cup each) with a half packet of sweetner and freeze them. When you get a craving or after a work out, grab a bag and enjoy. I think I'm really getting the hang of it. Dieting and getting healthy is not as bad as I used to make it. I used to starve myself and eat like 1 can of tuna and 1 can of veggies a day, but it would always come back when I stopped. Now I eat regular meals and snacks and I'm losing weight and feeling comfortable again. At the end of May I was wearing tight size 16s and very fatigued, moody, and never wanted to go any where. I now wear 14s comfortably and even put on a pair of 12 stretch jeans Saturday night and went out without feeling ashamed of myself and the way I think I look. I'm singin' now ~ :dazzle:

Here is my FAVORITE way to get coconut oil into my diet:
1 - 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 - 2 tablespoons coconut oil (liquified)
splenda to taste...
blend well
SLOWLY! Drizzle in heavy cream... stirring all the while.
The cold cream will cause the chocolate to seaze up so you have to add it little by little and stir WELL.
when you get the consistency of cooked pudding... you're done.
it tastes like real good chocolate pudding...

I grew up in Sweden, and they make a Christmas confection they call "ice-chocolate" by melting coconut fat and dark chocolate together and pouring it into little candy papers (you know, like the ones you line muffin tins with, only smaller) It tastes wonderful! So I don't know how you would substitute something low-carb for a dark chocolate bar? Probably cocoa powder, butter and Splenda? I don't have any coconut fat (oil) but am definitely getting some after reading this thread, as I am hypo thyroid.
So glad to have found this site!

Has anyone here who knows you are blood type O tried using coconut oil to boost a sluggish thyroid? Low carb author Fran McCullough (I trust her) reports that D'Adamo (the author of Eat Right 4 Your Type -- I don't know that I trust him) says people with Type O blood should avoid coconut oil. I am Type O, and I am drawn to coconut and coconut oil, but have hesitated to give it much of a try because of this advice. I love eating low carb and I love the 37 pound weight loss I've maintained for months, but I'd love even more to resume losing weight. I've experimented within the low carb framework with many different food combos but am still curious about coconut oil. I also notice that very few people who get excited about it and start using it come back to report the results long term.
Anyone out there who can comment?

Hi all,
I just got on here last night an entered a post as a newcomer. I think this is different. Regarding coconut oil, T3 and T4. If you go to wilsonsthyroidsyndrome.com, you can find doctor's in your state who practice his therapy protocal. I believe they have you document your temp every 3 hours for a while, not sure how many days/weeks. Also, temp goes up for women if ovulating, so take that into consideration as well. I made an appt. with a Dr. in my state as well for January. Her assistant said this doctor has been getting a lot of referrals from the website. Make sure to be familiar with Dr. Wilson's protocal using the timed-released T3 if that is the route you are taking. He is not interested in anyone wasting their time or money. Me neither!! If your doctor won't do the work, see someone who will. I want to feel better. I think this may be it. Also, you can get his book downloaded for FREE from a website called Flylady.com(link below). It is a great website about staying organized and not going nuts in your house, your life and during the holidays. Dr. Wilson has established a good rapport with the gal who started Flylady and wants to help others. I hope it's ok to give you the link...

I just discovered a website that put it all together for me about hypothyroidism and its relationship to estrogen, why soy products can be detrimental, how extra virgin coconut oil helps. They even suggest using a progesterone cream to help balance out the estrogen factor and increase thyroid production. They sell the books by Dr. Bruce Fife about Coconut oil and hypothyroidism for less than Amazon.com and they sell good quality Coconut oil for a fair price, with lots of other coconut products. Here is an excerpt from one of their web pages:
Hypothyroidism and Virgin Coconut Oil
There are many side effects of a sluggish thyroid gland and the resulting slower metabolism. First of all it effects your energy level greatly, and with a slower metabolism and subsequent reduction in activity (and energy) there is often unwanted weight gain. Unfortunately, a person's health is effected, as well. Coconut oil can help with a lot of these problems. Several health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and osteoporosis are more prevalent in those people who have slow metabolism. Any health condition is made worse if the metabolic rate is slower than normal, because the cells can't heal and repair themselves as quickly. People with hypothyroidism desperately want to live normal, energetic lives and it is quite possible adding coconut oil to your diet will be part of your answer.
Increase your Metabolism and Energy Level
Coconut oil or some form of it is used in many hospital formulas to help the very old, the very young, and the very ill to regain their strength and vitality. The medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are much different that the long chain fatty acids found in the seed oils. This difference effects how the body utilizes this oil, how it is digested and metabolized, and how it aids the body.
The medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are easily absorbed and put to use nourishing the body. Unlike other fats, they put little strain on the digestive system and provide a quick source of energy. On the other hand, long chain fatty acids are usually digested with digestive enzymes from the liver and take a long time to breakdown. Less enzymes and less energy are required for coconut oil digestion. You see, the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are digested and absorbed quickly and with minimal effort. Because of this there is less strain on the pancreas, liver and the digestive system. This is important for persons who suffer from metabolic problems.
Once digested long chain fatty acids go on to be stored in adipose tissue to be used later. However, coconut oil, because it contains shorter fatty acid chains, is absorbed into the blood stream and used by the body for energy. Many people describe the "burning" of coconut oil as being similar to the "burning" of carbohydrates for fuel. The long chain fatty acids, which are digested by the body, must be linked up with carrier proteins (they are called lipoproteins) and carried though out the body. They can be used by the cells or organs for energy or stored in adipose tissue or dropped off on the sides of arteries, etc. The fats which do this are cholesterol, long chain saturated fats, monounsaturated fat, and polyunsaturated fat. The medium chain fatty acids, however, are not packaged into lipoproteins, but travel to the liver where they are converted into energy. Ordinarily they are not stored to any significant degree as body fat. Medium chain fatty acids produce energy. Other dietary fats produce fat.
For energy, if the body uses carbohydrates, insulin, produced by the pancreas, is required for the glucose molecules to be able to enter into the cell. Many, many people develop a resistance to insulin as they get older and it becomes increasingly more difficult for the body to get these molecule into the cells. Any extra glucose which can or does not get used by the body for energy is turned into triglycerides and then carried by carriers all over the body. You can have high triglycerides in your blood and not eat an ounce of fat. Even total vegitarians can have high triglycerides from eating a high carbohydrate diet. Triglycerides and the lipoproteins, in the same manner as glucose, travel across the cell membrane to be used as energy, and they too require carriers (enzymes) in order to permeate both membranes of the cell's mitrochondria where their energy is released. Since the longer chain fatty acids demand special enzymes to pull them through the double membrane, the energy production process is much slower and taxing on the enzyme reserves. Medium chain fatty acids are unique in that they can easily permeate both membranes of the mitrochondria without the need of enzymes and thus provide the cell with a quick and efficient source of energy. This is great news if you are feeling fatigued.
Eating foods containing medium chain fatty acids is like putting high octane fuel into your car. The car will run smoother and get better gas mileage. Likewise, with medium chain fatty acids, your body will perform better because it has more energy and greater endurance. Because MCFA are funneled directly to the liver and converted into energy, the body gets a boost of energy. And because MCFA are easily absorbed by the energy-producing organelles of the cells, metabolism increases. This burst of energy has a stimulating effect on the entire body. Many people, those with relatively good health, those with significant health problems, and those who are overweight notice a speeding up of their heart rate, their metabolism and their body temperature when they add coconut oil to their diet.
It is important to realize that insulin is not involved in any of the process of getting these medium chain fatty acids into the cells and so you will not see a "sugar high" (or peak in your sugar level) and a "sugar low" where you want to go to sleep.
The fact that MCFA digest immediately to produce energy and stimulate metabolism has led athletes to use them as a means to enhance exercise performance. There are several studies showing this to be true. For example, in one study, investigators tested the physical endurance of mice who were given MCFA in their daily diet against those that weren't. The study extended over a six week period. The mice were subjected to a swimming endurance test every other day. They were placed in a pool of water with a constant current flow like that found in a river. The total swimming time until exhaustion was measured. While at first there was little difference between the groups of mice, those fed MCFA quickly began to out-perform the others and continued to improve throughout the testing period.1
To be fair, there are studies which have concluded that MCFA do not have an effect on energy levels and endurance. These studies have drawn this conclusion based on one time dosages of MCFA. The studies which are cited that show a definite benefit from the MCFA are those where the oil was given on a daily basis for a period of time. Therefore, it appears that for the best benefit a person should consume these medium chain fatty acids on a daily basis.
Besides increasing your energy level, there are other very important benefits that results from boosting your metabolic rate: it helps protect you from illness and speeds healing. When metabolism is increased, cells function at a higher rate of efficiency. They heal injuries quicker, old and diseased cells are replaced faster. Young, new cells are generated at an increased rate to replace the worn-out ones. Even the immune system functions better.
Eat Fat, Lose Weight
In the United States 55% of the population is overweight. One in 4 adults is considered obese. Being overweight increases risk for gall bladder, disease, osteo-arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and early death.
You can reduce you food intake, reduce your fat intake, and you can be hungry all the time, feel miserable, depressed and not lose many (if any) pounds. Most people eventually give up with no lasting or significant weight loss. Each time you lower your calorie intake your body lowers it basal metabolism and you require less calories to go through a day, which will result in more weight gain once you give up your diet. It is a vicious cycle. Young people require more calories than older people. Physically active people use more calories than less active ones. People who are fasting, starving, or even dieting use less calories than people who are not. And over weight people use fewer calories than lean or muscular people. Overweight people who are dieting have even lower metabolism. And then if your thyroid gland is not working well, you may feel quite desperate. Interestingly enough, many people find, that by changing the fats they have in their diet from the unsaturated long chain fatty acids (found in seed oils) to the medium chain fatty acids (found in coconut oil), they gradually over the the weeks and months lose weight effortlessly. It has also been well documented in numerous dietary studies using both animals and humans that replacing long chain fatty acids with medium chain fatty acids results in a decrease in body weight gain and a reduction in fat deposition. 2-8
The reasons seem to be two fold. Since carbohydrates are usually used for energy, if they are not in excess they will not be turned into triglycerides and go into fat stores. Proteins are rarely used for energy. They make up the building blocks of much of our cells and systems and are usually used in that function. But fats, if in long chains, will almost always go into fat stores unless the calorie intake is low and they are needed for energy. However, the medium chain fatty acids will not do that. They will help in the digestion of the fat soluable vitamin, and they will fight bacteria and viruses (lauric acid is known for dissolving the lipid envelope that protects many pathogenic viruses and bacteria) and in the end rather than adding to fat stores these fatty acid chains will be used up for energy by the body. And since coconut oil will speed up metabolism, your body will actually be burning more calories in a day and you will have more energy. You may even become more active. This will only help to accelerate weight loss and renew your health. It is very interesting to see studies that show the unsaturated fats as having an effect on the body of causing hypothyroidism and a lower metabolic rate and the coconut oil speeding up metabolism and increasing thyroid activity.

This is interesting information. Thanks for posting it. I do have to report, though, that after trying pure coconut oil three different times for about three weeks each, I saw no difference in anything at all. I love coconut, but I got tired of the intense taste of the oil and gave it up each time. I suspect it may be one of those individual things, something that does not work for every single person.

This was so interesting to me. I have had thyroid disease for 20 years and have never heard of anything like this.
can you tell me a place where I can purchase it and if you have a site where I can read more about it?
I would also like to know how you take it in the morning.

Here's a recipe for low carb cornbread that uses coconut oil.
1 C Wheat protein isolate (I get it at www.lowcarber.com)
2/3 C stone ground corn meal
1/3 C almond meal or almond flour
1 teasp salt
4 teasp baking powder
1 C water
1/2 C cream
1 egg
2 Tbsp coconut oil
Preheat oven to 425 F.
Beat egg and add water and cream. Sift and add dry ingredients. Mix quickly just until moist. Heat coconut oil and add to batter. Pour into 8x8 baking dish and bake 15-20 minutes. (If you like it a little sweet and 4 to 5 packets of splenda to the recipe.)
You can substitute coconut oil for whatever oil or shortening is called for in muffin recipes. Most of them use a lot of oil (like half a cup), so it's a great way to add coconut oil to your diet. I made Atkins muffins from a mix today and used coconut oil instead of butter.

Here's another recipe I've tried using coconut oil.
Mexican Fish Fillet
Melt 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil in a pan. Brown 2 Tilopia fish fillets (you can use snapper or other fish too). Turn the fish when browned on one side and then spread each piece generously with store bought Salsa (whatever kind you like best). Cover the pan and continue to cook on low heat until fish is thoroughly done and salsa is heated through. When you take the fish out of the pan, pour whatever coconut oil is left over the fish. Squeeze the juice of 1/2 lime over each piece. Sometimes I crumble a little Mexican cheese over the top just before I serve it. This is optional and you can substitute crumbled feta cheese, if you want.

I've read this entire thread, and it seems the most asked question is "how do I ingest the oil." Well, this is how I eat mine and I think it's very good.
1-2 T of coconut oil (melted)
1-2T Walden sugar free Chocolate syrup
1 T lowest carb Peanut butter (optional, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't)
Mix in small glass container, by stirring very well until blended. Put in freezer for about 5- 8 min. This tastes just like a _________ candy bar!

Hi,
I've been reading this thread with interest. I've not got thyroid problems, well that I know of anyway. Though I did find last winter that I had trouble warming up and would have to take hot showers to get warm even though the house was warm. What I want ask is has anyone notice any other improvements while taking coconut oil? I'm sure I read somewhere about someone taking it and the dry areas on their knees and elbows have cleared up. Which is really what I need, my knees have dark, dry skin on them and I want them gone. Maybe I should test it on myself to see if it works.

Hi Folks! :)
I've been taking 3.5 tbs VCO (virgin coconut oil) for 10 days and my temps have gone from a low of 96.2 to a high of 97.5 and all that is post-ovulation. I'm quite hopeful it will help with all my other symptoms of hypothyroid also, but time will tell.
I'm also having trouble including it in my diet. I've been low carbing for three years so I'm no stranger to a high fat diet, but I still find that I can barely stomach dinner five hours after lunch! Trying to eat smaller meals and still making adjustments, tho - any suggestions?
The way I incorporate my VCO is thus: I follow Nourishing Traditions and have a bowl of soaked organic oats (porridge) with my bacon and eggs for breakfast, and found that mixing in 1.5 tbs of VCO in the porridge works. I also add lemon juice, cinnamon, dessicated coconut and Greek Yogurt (but not necessarily all that the same time!) After lunch, I have a cup of coffee with coconut milk, and I melt in 1.5 tbs into that also. That leaves me with about .5 of a tbs left to ingest and I either get that from frying my lunch meat in it or have a hot cocoa with coconut milk, Splenda and VCO in the evening.
It works for me ... just have to figure out how to get my appetite back!! :p

I found another good way to incorporate coconut oil in my diet. I'm not the kind to eat it straight and so I'm always looking for alternatives. One thing I found was to saute mushrooms in VCO. They absorb a lot. Then add them to whatever meat dish you're cooking, or eat them as a side dish. Sometimes I add onions and garlic to the saute for variety, or bell pepper, but mushrooms absorb the most oil. Eggplant will absorb a lot too.

Wow - I didn't know you could get VCO in gelcaps. I find it hard to eat the actual oil to the recommended doses - cos much as I like coconut, it gets a bit much if you can never get away from it! However, I wonder how fresh gelcaps would keep the oil, considering other oils deteriorate and go rancid fairly quickly. I will have to check this one out in my local GNC.
How many gelcaps per day are prescribed?

Yeah, I wouldn't trust gelcaps either.. Although other oils come in gelcaps..
I know you can buy kits to make your own gelcaps, but I wouldn't want to fill a capsule every day either.

Ive been taking it for 3 days now, however i realised that it had no taste and no smell. I read the label and it said it has been refined bleached and deodarised. I then tried to research if this type of oil still would heklp you loose weight, but i couldnt find any info! I hope this stuff will still help my thyroid because its the only oil available here. Does anyone know if RBD oils still help you loose weight like virgin coconut oil? Please if anyone knows it would help me so much and take away alot of stress worying about it!!!!

It should still do the trick. The thing in coconut oil that works is the medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). Research MCT oil on google for more info on this.
Unless the coconut oil was HYDROGENATED, you're fine.

I purchased vigrin coconut oil from "live coconut oil". It is the unrefined, cold processed kind. it is the first brand I have tried, but is pretty good, although I have nothing to compare it to. It costs $19.95 a quart, a bit cheaper than some on-line brands. I am not hypo, but found this thread looking for message boards on coconut oil. It does seem to give me steady energy all day, and although I don't take my temperature, I do feel warmer. I believe , after taking it for a week, it has helped me lose two or so pounds. i tried taking it straight from the jar, and although I could swallow it, I have found the best way for me is to take it in a cup of very warm milk. The flavors seem to blend wonderful, and you don't even know it's there. Adding a drop or two of vanilla makes it even better. I have tried it in coffe also, but the milk tastes better. I am sure it would be great in hot cocoa also. I did cook a little with it, some fried green tomatoes, and omelettes. They both came out great. My husband doesn't care for the taste of it, so I can't cook with it a whole lot.

Hello to Raquel and Lisan. My name is Mark, and i am in West Palm Beach. I have been dealing with this low temp cold body thing for seven years now and wondering if anyone is getting their temps up to 98.6. I will give the coconut oil a try and see what happens. Does anyone know why Oil of Oregano would cause a rise in body temps?
Thanks,
Musik

Mark,
I heard alot of good about oil of oregano, but not that it raises body temp. Maybe I just didn't see that. It is supposed to act as a wide range antibiotic and protects the body against many illnesses. I read where asian, or Panax ginseng raises body temp. I was using it for a bit for energy, but found it made me too hot, when I researched it, I found out it can make you hotter, so i stopped using it and now use the siberian kind, which has more of a balancing effect.
