(my husband is starting tomorrow and wants me to ask this:)

How about plain "Total" Greek Yogurt (one of his absolute favorites)?

It has 4.4 grams of carb per 100g, but is fat free - the one that isn't fat free has more carbs in it. It's very thick - it's not like those thin little fruit yogurts. It's quite creamy - he used to eat it with fruit but found he just likes it plain.

He wants to know if he can have it during induction (although I don't see yogurt anywhere on the list), or at least, when induction is over?

Any input on this? I'm having a hard time relating to him why cream and mayo is allowed but not yogurt.

Thanks
Dawn

Hi Dawn

I don't know the full answer about yogurt. I know I have steered clear of it for most of the time I have been low carbing, except when I was in Turkey on holiday last year.

I think it would be wise to avoid it during induction, but there should be no reason why you could not add it in afterwards, provided you counted the carbs and did not stint on veggies. I must admit I do not like the taste without something in it to sweeten it.

Further down the track, if he finds he is stalling, then removing dairy products, yougurt and cream, may be one way to trigger the body to loose weight again.

May I wish your husband every success. Of course, cream has half the carbs of yogurt!

Hi Dawn (and Anne),

Yoghurt is a nono on Induction but after is fine if, as Anne says, you count the carbs.

It is definitely best to stick to the full fat one though.
In fact there are two things to remember about yoghurt.
First, full fat, secondly, choose one that has at least 2 bacterial cultures. Why? Because those bacteria (bless their little cotton socks) consume around two thirds of the sugars.
So, 1 cup of full fat yoghurt is usually labelled about 12g carbs - but effectively you (or your husband ;) ) are getting about 4 carbs.

Just remind him that he'll do a lot better if he sticks to what the good doc has prescribed for Induction.

Cheers, matey.

Hi Dawn,

For more info about yoghurt look at the article 'the Yoghurt Exception' on www.lowcarbluxury.com and click on Featured Articles. As Rosebud says the lactobacilli digest the lactose in the yoghurt thus lowering the carbs. The article explains why the ingredient list marks a higher carb content than is actually contained in the product.

All those probiotics and lactic acid are pretty good for you too!

Best,

Caro

Hi, we eat the full fat greek yoghurt, called Total - it has fewer carbs than the low fat stuff.
It's about 4 carbs for 100g. Both of us are fine on it.

For a real treat, I mash strawberries (or other berries) in and stir a little bit of Splenda in - yummmmm!

Dear Alan

You can get Splenda in the UK through some online suppliers, but we don't have it in the supermarket yet. If you know anyone travelling overseas, get them to get some for you in Canada or the US.

We were using liquid Hermesetas (from Waitrose) before our Splenda arrived - it worked well and wasn't made out of aspertame like the powered Hermesetas (the liquid is made from saccharine). It's heat resistant too, so you can bake with it.

Good luck!

Yes, I buy Splenda from www.carblife.co.uk. They have a £5 flat rate delivery charge, so its worth buying plenty, but since they have lots of low carb goodies, that's not hard!
