I'm a believer!!
I had my first carb-up this weekend--started Friday at 4:00 finished Saturday 8:00. Saturday was spent in carb coma--not too pleasant. Anything to be done about this? Or should I just expect to sleep away my Saturdays?
Went right back to keto diet Sunday morning. After church I did leg workout. It was amazing. I thought I could lift an elephant! I kept upping the weights was using. I should be paralyzed from the waist down by tonight!!
Here's the shocking thing, though. After lifting like crazy for over an hour, I had so much energy I went for a 4 1/2 mile run. I felt that if I didn't, I'd make my family crazy with all my spare energy. I've never used drugs, but I imagine it could feel something like this. Is this normal?
I can't wait til tonight's upper body workout to see if this extra strength/energy thing continues.
I was showing trace ketones this morning. Woohoo. I was also up 7 lbs from Friday. This is a good thing, right? Water should drop off pretty quickly.
I guess I just keep wanting reassurance that I'm doing okay with this!
Thanks for all your help, folks! I wouldn't be doing this if this board and all this info were not here.

LOL, yes, that sounds exactly like how I feel doing this. Carb-coma plus headache (for me, it's the pure sugar) on Saturday. Energy and strength to spare the rest of the week. I usually hit ketosis by Monday morning. I tested the faintest trace last night after dinner, but I think I smelled it earlier around lunch.
Only wierd thing for me this week was that I never lost the water bounce from last week's carb-up (TOM, most likely), and I didn't get a water bounce this week. (i.e. my scale weight held constant for a good 10 days.)
Cheers!

Thanks, Friday! Did it freak you out not to lose the water? I'm afraid I would have some serious misgivings if I stayed up these 7 lbs!
Have a good day

It did freak me a little, but I knew it had to be water because my inches went down. Thank heaven for the ol' pant-o-meter. :) If I had gained *another* 7 lbs this week, I might have started freaking, though. LOL

Things look good.
And, the weight will bounce -- assuming TOM doesn't rear its ugly head. Damn water retention.
If you hit a stall and that scale doesn't move, be sure to check bf% or the ol' "pants-o-meter".
This diet DOES work, and it works well.
Way to go both of you!

Just an update on my week--in case anyone cares! I did upper body tonight and had the same situation as yesterday. Upped weights on everything--worked everything to failure. I did my incline flyes with 30 lb dumbbells. That's a 5 lb. increase! Afterwards I went for a 40 minute walk.
Feeling good, but the water has not yet receded. Hopefully some will be gone by tomorrow so I can start seeing some improvement!
Thanks to those who've commented--it helps a lot!

Hi there fernie!
I don't have any words of wisdom about CKD because I am doing BFL, but I am following to see what happens. Keep postin'!

My workout following my carb up was great too. But the next one was no where near as good!
I was really only able to lift about 70% of what I do on my normal carb diet. Is this expected or am I doing something wrong??? Also I'm taking forever to get into ketosis! I've done two workouts and two cardio sessions since my carb load and on my third day of my regulare keto diet I still haven't hit ketosis! What am I doing wrong, cuz I notice you guys all seem to hit ketosis in one or two days!!!

-No, this actually happens to me. Anyways, when I go without carbohydrates for a few days (after a 'carb-up')- I tend to feel like grade -'A' SHIT. The 'get back into ketosis' period is the worst!

-There could be a number of variables (ex. you're in ketosis but you're burning off ketones and not excreting excess ketones. You're not eating enough fat- etc. etc.). However, I would take some 'glucose disposal agents' as a 'fail-safe'. Are you using 'Alpha Lipoic Acid'? I re-call another post saying that you did... anyways, take upwards to a gram (or 2) a day and taper off once you get into ketosis.

Cool thanks again Zeus. I finally got into trace this afternoon and I have been keeping up with chromium and ALA. So is 3 days long enough to be in ketosis for fat loss, or should I wait a bit longer for my next carb up?

Fernie,
FWIW, I *am* losing the water bounce this week. Down to 212.5 today after being at 215 after carb-up and 217 mid-week. Yeah, I was actually higher mid-week than after carb-up. Hadda been TOM, drat it! :) Am hoping to see 209 again by Friday.
Cheers,
Friday

-Some people actually use this approach to hasten fat-loss. You might want to tinker with the idea of doing a 'carb-up' every 10 days or every 14 days. Personally, I think it would be more convenient to just 'carb-up' every 14 days (albeit not as much fun as having a 'carb-up' every week; you will lose more fat this way).

Randy, Randy, Randy. When will you learn... just because something works for you (and if it does- by all means stick with it) ...doesn’t mean it’s going to WORK for every other person on this EARTH. I merely suggested the ‘carb-up’ be done every 14 days to maximize fat-loss (plus, glycogen depletion could be spread out over a longer period of time to make sure GLYCOGEN is thoroughly depleted). Referring back to ‘The Ketogenic Diet’ - Lyle McDonald says: “some individuals have found a 10-day CKD cycle to be the most effective. Additionally, individuals who cannot do a full carb-load every 7 days have done a 14 day cycle with a carb-load every other week.” What I’m trying to get at is- experimentation is key. Again, just because it worked for YOU, doesn’t mean it will work for me (or someone else). If that was the way things worked- we could all just follow a ‘certain’ diet (yours apparently) and get ‘shredded’. It doesn’t work that way (needless to say).
P.S. I had to laugh when I saw your post: Yeah and more muscle too!!!
-Come on, you’re not even trying anymore. Is it even possible to be anymore vague than that!?
