Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who does NOT use the scale. I have just begun my dieting and know my starting weight and have done one "weigh-in" thus far.

I keep reading about people getting frustrated when the scale doesn't move and I think I may just go by how I feel. I can always tell when I am losing wieght after the first big chunk goes.

Any suggestions or personal stories???

Thanks for listening :D

Hi Jolly Bean

I go to the doctors once a week and get weighed. I don't do it myself anymore, because I am determined not to make this about the numbers...this has got to be about getting healthy for me. My doctor doesn't even let me see...he just tells me what I am down. It is a better way for me, because I can become obsessive.

Anita,

Thanks for the reply! I think that's a great idea to get weighed at the doctor's office. I don't even know if I could find a doctor who would do that for me. The last time I talked to a doctor about my weight, he told me to go to weight watchers.

Unfortunately, I am also horrifed of seeing a doctor because I have had some very bad experiences in the past with fat-phobic MD's and I just don't want to put myself through that right now.

Maybe when I start to lose more weight and my confidence goes up I'll do that!

Thanks again!

Hugs,
Jolly Bean

It is sad that you had such bad experiences...but I do think that the medical community is coming around to L/C....It was my general practicianer that told me to do L/C...then I found another doctor who supports people through the atkin plan...I feel really lucky to have found him.

I use the scale a lot, partly because I love to chart things and run "what if" scenarios............if I lose 0.67 lbs per week what would I weigh on June 12 2009...........If I cut off my arm, how much would I lose and would I walk around in circles.......that kind of thing :daze:

One thing I will say, if you are uncomfortable about gaining 3 lbs after a solid week of dieting because of water retention you probably should hit the scale once a month (and take measurements too).

If you don't like your doctor, shop.

No, don't go to the mall and spend money, but find out which doctors are covered in your insurance plan. Ask people about different doctors and see if any of the ones people seem to like are covered in your plan. Find a doctor you can like, because it really can make a difference.

If you like your doctor, you can trust his advice for you. If he treats you like a human being instead of a disease, you can trust that he's not just trying to bilk your wallet or get rid of you. If he can't spend time with you (not just in the exam room, but actually looking at you and interacting with you), he's not worth your time, money or energy. Let him pay off med school with other people's money; you and your money deserve better.

You're a consumer, honey (and I'm not talking about eating habits, either), and, whether we like it or not, the US is a capitalistic society. If we all make a point to see doctors who treat us with respect, eventually the jerks and *self edit* who only care about the money or the disease and not the people will figure out that we won't put up with abuse. Doctors aren't better people than we are...they just have a more specialised education than most of us do. Better educated doesn't equal better human, and don't let your doctor treat you with any less respect and dignity than you deserve!

I promise, there are caring medical professionals out there. In the meantime, you've got our support here!
