Hi!

I was just thinking that another forum idea, or maybe just a thread idea might be for those who are in this for over a hundred pounds to lose. I have a lot to go, haven't even set a goal for myself actually, still trying to come to grips with that, but I know that I feel a great kindridship with everyone who posts to this board. Yet, I always feel a little extra surge of commradery (sp? sorry and I'm an English teacher! shame....) when I see posts from those with a lot to lose.

So, if you don't mind, I'd love to hear from some 100 + wanna be losers out there. I started this about 6 weeks ago and I'm down 23 pounds. I feel remarkable and I know this is the way to live for me! I haven't seen a 2 as the first number in my weight since before I got pregnant almost 2 years ago. I'm at 297 now and feeling on a role!

Thanks for everyone's support, advice and information.

Over the past 2 years I have lost 187 pounds. Not just by low-carbing, I also had the benefit of gastric bypass surgery. But, there have been many struggles on my way here. I can offer this advice. Set little goals and don't get overwhelmed by the big picture. Breaking through into the 2's is fantastic! Set reward levels for yourself. For instance, when I hit the 200 pound lost point I have a rather nice shopping spree coming! Also, I might throw a party. A BiCentennial Party ;) ! My end goal is 250 pounds lost and I'm still formulating my plans for that one!!!

Shopping, an evening out, even a weekend away. Anything you can manage will help get you to the next goal. I would recommend not setting any goal higher than 15 pounds. That is a huge amount to lose and you shouldn't have to wait longer than that to reward yourself.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

I'm not sure if I have 100+ more to lose. I lost 120. According to insurance height-weight tables I need to be 180, but I've been there and looked like skin on bones, so this time-around I'm shooting for 230-240 instead of the standard 180.

Interesting that on those "ideal" tables, most sports athletes would be classified as obese, and body builders would be morbidly obese! :)

Hi mari

I'll put my hand up. I'm another fat person.. I'm a similar size to you and have a fair way to go but only another 12lbs to my next goal. I had a baby 11 months ago and that added another 60 lbs to my already large size.

I want to be thin enough to get back to work and get a good job (not what I'd think of as a 'fat persons' job - you know the sort, they give it to you when they cant get anyone else to do it. They accept that you're fat only because you're well and truly skilled enough to do the job). Maybe you've not had this experience but I have recently and it really began to get me down. Then you find yourself acting like a fat person....

Thank himself for low carbing! I've already stopped acting like a fat person and I intend soon not to look like a fat person ....

Anyway, we'll all get there together - even if I have to put up with all these d**n trekkies....

Nicola;)

Those height-weight charts are so out of whack. According to them, at 5'2", I should weigh 105-110. I just worked out my lean body weight, and it's 107. So even with NO FAT AT ALL on my bod, I'd STILL be overweight by a couple of pounds! And I ain't no bodybuilder, believe me!

I think those stats were cooked up by a bunch of skinny capitalist sadists to make us all unhappy so we'll buy more crap we don't need to make ourselves feel better.

Just my humble opinion!

Rachel

PS: Hi, Nicola. I'm just a damned wanna-be Trekkie! When I get into that uniform, you'll be the first to know! :)

So you're lurking about again eh Rachel?? Arent their any star trek reruns on the box that you should be watching??

I bet you fancy yourself as the new Deanna Troy in one of those short jobs, I'd tend towards more of a 7 of 9 look myself although I doubt that at my age my chest will ever look like that.

Still I suppose lonely apartment livers without cats have to have some kind of an interest ...

Alright, I feel sorry for you even - when you move, you can have one of mine, you can chose between the old one, the old diabetic one or the young epileptic one with the gammy legs. Yeah, having cats is great fun....

I have over 100lbs to lose, aussi.

My weight now is about 295 ( I have to weigh myself--haven't done it since february). I will like to go down to about 150 or a comfortable size 12 which ever comes first.

I am there with you rachel, I HATE those stupid weight charts. I am also 5'2'' and there is NO WAY I am going down to 107! I will be a skeleton held together by skin.

I too have over 100 pounds to loose. I started the Adkins after I saw that it worked. My sister in law lost over 100 pounds in about 1 year and has kept off 80. I tell my friends that I now have ADD due to all the energy I have. I have lost 16 pounds since 4.22, and have went down 2 dress sizes. I feel wonderful and I have made my mind up to make this my way of life. This is no diet it is dedication to my self.....

I think I have at least 150 to lose. When I went to the dr a month ago I weighed 280, which was a ten lb loss for me, and I think I would like to get down to at least 150 lbs. About 12 years ago when I had my gallbladder out (and had to do low-fat out of necessity) I had gotten down to 180 and looked zaftig, just like a Cajun girl ought to I think ;)

Because I am a diabetic I came across Dr. Bernstein's diet first but it has a lot in common with Atkins since it is low-carb. We get to eat more carbs than on Atkins but that may well be because we also count fiber (and in fact kind of count it double, for its bulking effects at meals). And I have to admit I do love the Atkins products I have tried so far -- the sugar-free chocolate syrup is SO good in protein shakes!

Anyway, if anyone wants to check out his diet/book for comparison, here's his site: http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/index.shtml It's got great info even if you aren't diabetic (especially since us really fat folks have insulin resistance).

I think I qualify to register here as I needed to lose more than a hundred pounds a few months ago when I started my low-carb diet this time (although I undertook one five years ago, lost 77 lbs, then gradually put it all back on again by letting too many carbs back into my diet). I have once again lost 70 lbs, and another 40 odd would be good. Why are there so few entries by males on this thread? I cannot believe the proportion of triple-figure qualifiers is so "weighted" towards women. Perhaps there are some men who are a little bashful about admitting their degree of need to lose weight. But why not be honest, and share the knowledge, the kinship, the struggles and the rewards of speaking up? Come on, let's have a few more honest men!

Hi Everyone,

Though I have lurked for a while I haven't posted much. However, when I saw this thread I just had to struggle up and be counted. Not sure how much I weight I have to lose but I know it is 300+.

Because of health reasons (diabetes, osteoarthritis) I have tried to do low carb now for about a year. I do ok for a few days then blow it for a day or two. you would think pain would be a motivator but it isn't for me. I am trying to do Protein Power, but after reading some posts on this board I'm going to check out Dr. Bersten's book.

I need encouragement and ideas on how to work this woe. I tend to just get bogged down with salad and meat. I'm not a great cook, but I think to make this plan work or any other you must cook and plan for success. So once again going to stock up at store tom. and start again Monday.

I'm going to post more often for accountability sake. Thank you for starting this thread and sharing your stories.

I've found (and you'll probably see it posted elsewhere too) that the first two days are the worst -- the carbo cravings drive me NUTZ! But after about 48 hours, they stop. And cher, I know it's hard when you're living in South Luziana where the food is just SOOOO good -- my mom (who lives in Houma incidentally) has much more trouble staying on lc than I do. For the first couple of days (at least) I'd lay in a good supply of nuts, Sugar-free Jello (NOT the pudding unless you make it with water instead of milk -- the lactose will make the carbo cravings worse, believe me I know), and cheese, and if you're going to eat fruit (which Dr. Bernstein says not to) have it as dessert, not alone.

All that said, even if you do go and blow it, that just means you're human like the rest of us ;) so don't beat yourself up and just go back on it when you can. I think even being lc sporadically is better than not at all!

Hi Deb,

Thanks for the encouragement, I need it. So far today I'm doing well.

Yes, indeed, we do live in eating country. I wanted to tell you that I recently visited Shreveport, my husband works in Bossier city. Shreveport is a lovely town. However, the best part of the trip was stopping in Broussard and tasting the cracklins there.
I assume they are ok on lowcarb, but I would have to watch that I don't od.

Well, ok, then keep me in your thoughts as I try to stay the course.

I've lost 15 pounds-it's been a month. I'm not discouraged. I don't feel like I'm on a diet. Instead of the No Carbs for two weeks. I took the
low carb approach. It's slower, but maybe I won't falter. I now weigh 235. I set my goal 135. Seems like a long weigh--ha! ha! there, I have more hope this time. I've tried Fasten--made my hair fall out. Formu-3--made my wallet skinner. Weight Watchers--I watched myself try and try and I just couldn't seem to improve. I can't blame my extra pounds on having a baby. I lost 35 pounds while I was pregnant and I was extrememly sick. I was feed via intravenous tube 3 times a week for about 3 months. After I had my daughter, I chose to nurse. I wanted to be careful about what I ate--I chose cereal--it's healthy, right!??? sometimes I ate cereal 3 times a day. I went from 185 to 260 in less than a year. I didn't realize how bad it was until I started having problems with my blood pressure. I decided I wanted to live to see my daughter grow. This is my reason--and if I can have my steak and eat it too--I'll try to be happy about it.

Lots of us here who believed the lowfat, high-cereal mythologies .. and ended up fatter than ever ... and blaming ourselves, we must be doing something wrong, or cheating ... I had a "friend" tell me I must be unconsciously eating more calories than I said I was, and "denying" it to myself ..

Good for you to take the steps toward a healthier you. And your little girl will sure enjoy having a healthy Mommy to play with her!

Keep us posted .... maybe even pop into our Introductions forum (http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=37), and say Howdy .. ;)

Hang in there! I'm what my doc refers to as a prediabetic. The 3rd day without sugar (Candy, Cookies, Cake, Mints, Gum) just about did me in. My husband too. I was a bear! {A rabid bear, with it's cub missing and foot caught in a steel trap.} I'll sneak in a few more carbs than I need (<20), I am trying to get my sweets by natural fruit--not too much. Eating a piece of watermelon instead of a cookie--lets be honest--at least a 1/2 bag of cookies must be better. And I weigh every morning. My scale shows 1/2 pounds as well as whole ones. If I'm going in the wrong direction--I try to figure out what I've done wrong.

If I can go without that first bite of real sugar I'm okay. I've come to the conclusion that in my case I'm as addicted to sugar as some are to alcohol!

Hi Shirley et al

It really is all about getting organised. I've been 'off' the woe for about 2 weeks because I've started working again and just havent had time to cook and shop and get prepared. Bad news is - that damn 2lbs I fought to get off is back but I'm cooking tomorrow night and tonight to get back on track later in the week.

The Induction part is really hard but it doesnt last for ever, in order to do it, i give myself a bit of a scare (40 times more likely to die young than a person of average weight, got to lose weight to see my baby grow blah, blah, blah) to get the extra motivation to stick hard at it for a week. then I ease up a little.

Really good foods that break up the monotony (I find) are berry fruit fools (cream, 1/2 cup of berries and splenda), lemon cheesecake, lime meringue pie (recipe on this site) and sour cream banana bread (ditto). I dont much like cooking either but i find I have to or I just cant go the distance, the monotony is too great. Also, to lose weight, I have to consciously make an effort not to have fruit every day as the carbs creep up a bit much.

Keep experimenting and you'll find an increasing range of foods to enjoy (some of the stuff takes terrible but with trial and error, you can broaden your diet with stuff you enjoy).

Best wishes

Nicola

Hello, all. I'm another Wannabe Centurion. I delurked in Introductions last night.

What's really struck me, having read weight loss-related message boards of all kinds during the past two years, when I've been bouncing back among diets to find the one that will let me keep drinking Cokes and eating ice cream, is how many people are in the Super Plus category. (I weigh 282 -- no! 275.5 as of this morning :) ) When I was growing up, I didn't know anyone who weighed 250, 300+ pounds. (I'm 53, so I grew up Before McDonalds.)

So it isn't just that so many people are overweight -- 50% of Americans, I just heard on the news last night -- but that so many of us are REALLY overweight. This MUST be a result of junk food, processed foods, convenience foods.

Good luck to all of us! Let's put the junk-processed-convenience foods out of business :)

After reading all your posts I have to tell you, I am so motivated by your stories, it's truly a blessing! I've been 'fat' basically my entire life. I can remember being in grade school and going on a diet. I've lost 60lbs on Atkins in 5months, but I've went from a size 26 and today I purchased my first pair of 18's. I was THRILLED! When I put the pants on, I looked in the mirror and felt like I wasn't even myself. I still have a long way to go (i want to be a size 10 or 12) but I have found that exercise is a HUGE factor in my shrinking. This past month I've lost 5lbs, but from going to the gym 5days a week I've lost 1 and a half pant sizes! I look at this lowcarb eating as a way of life and I'm really okay with it. Weight Watchers never worked for me, nor did 'low fat' diets. I always felt like nothing could 'save' me from my weight. THANK GOD THIS HAS! I'm feeling better, looking better and have more confidence! If anyone out there is depressed or thinking about giving up, don't. If I can do this, truly anyone can! Nothing tastes as good as putting on those 18's for the first time!

Good luck to all!

Congratulations Ally.....great job! Your story is wonderful and how much I can relate to being heavy all my life. I can remember my mother taking me during the summer to weight watchers and measuring everything she gave me to eat.....! Yikes I felt like food was poison. I have a daughter who is 9 and I have never said boo about what she eats. We grow a garden together most of the year(in winter we grow inside a greenhouse) and we raise most of our meat organically. She thinks what we call Super salad nights are the best things in the world----we take our picking baskets and go through the garden and get anything thats ripe bring it in and make up a huge salad with usually grilled chicken, she brags about these to her friends. So alot depends on the foods we grew up with, I grew up being afraid of food and having the oreos put up high where Nancy couldn't reach them! Well when Nancy grew up she kept the oreos where she could reach them and look what happened....! Somewhere here I had a point I was trying to make.....boy long winded,,,,must be all that energy from low carbing. Take care all and have a great day.....Nancy in Oreo free land!;)

I think my Mother, in trying to get me to diet at a young age, was doing the best she knew at the time. She didn't realize how much she made me feel fat. I honestly didn't know I was heavy until she would talk 'diets' with me. I can remember being under 10yrs old and dieting. Food no long has the power or control it once did in my life. It's really amazing how we all let it control us. I have two eyes to see with, two ears to hear with, yet only one mouth. :) Ironic? I have a quickie questions: I'm eating so much cream cheese I'm going to curdle -- what else (minus egg salad/chicken salad) can bump me into Ketosis quickly? Good luck to everyone!

Ps. It's summer time and I find Crystal Light's lemonade (sugar free) to die for! Check it out!

Hi Dizz. You have probably worked this out for yourself already, but one useful tactic on a long haul is to look only to the next week or the next 2 or 3 pounds weight-loss. If you focus at the end result of the high double or treble figure target it can seem unattainable. If you aim at small and attainable targets each time, the overall picture takes care of itself. Hope you don't think I'm trying to interfere, but if you have only just embarked on a long haul, you might need one or two practical tips and a bit of encouragement.

Best wishes.

I wish you both luck. All milestones can become goals attainable in the foreseeable future. For us men, getting the belt to do up on the next notch down is always a thrill and a major landmark. Other landmarks turn up as you start to find that your current clothes become loose and baggy (what joy!) and you find you can finally get on a pair of trousers you haven't been able to wear for months or even years! But it has to be one small step at a time. On that regime you will get there.

Sincere best wishes to you both.

I too am aiming to lose over one hundred pounds. My Mother and I began our low carb WOL 3 weeks ago. We have noticed an increase in our energy levels. I am experiencing fewer headaches and our blood pressure is now in the normal range. We couldn't be more pleased with the results. I have lost 12.5 lbs since we began. I can't wait to reach my goal of fitting into a size 12! Thanks for all the support and motivation!

Hi y'all,

I am so glad to find you. I was hoping for a group of people to share mutual encouragement and support. I figure, if I were to find myself on the height/weight charts, I need to get rid of 140 pounds. I'm now at 280 and started the Atkins plan yesterday. Yesterday went fairly well ... I'm in the induction phase ... and I really wasn't hungry, yet I craved the things I couldn't have ... oh, I wanted some pretzels, so bad.

Today I realize I will really have to plan ahead to make this work .. to find lots of variety and to cook, cook, cook. I really like to cook ... but rarely have all the ingredients in the house ... and I hate grocery shopping. :-(

I think I'll stick to it this time ... I have very strong motivations. A few weeks ago I took a mission/study trip to Guatemala. It was a great trip. But for a couple of days we lived with the people of a Mayan village in the mountains outside of Coban. I was not able to hike to the upper village and had to stay behind. It was a motivator for me -- I really wanted to be able to hike up there. I was one of the younger members of the group (I'm 40) and was put to shame by some of the older members. I did lose 8 pounds on the trip :-) So I was pushing 290 a few weeks ago.

I am healthy, just out of shape. I was recently diagnosed with hashimoto's syndrome (thyroid) and once I was on the medicine for that I was much more energetic and motivated to take my health seriously.

Thanks again for starting this forum ... I want the support of other dieters ... but I think our reasons for dieting and our many of our challenges are unique.

Hi all, first time here...what an incredible thread.

Just wanted to say, I'm 5'2 also and 154 lbs to date. I do believe those who said they are 5'2 and would be happy at 150 lbs will find themselves thinking twice when they get there.

At this size your not skin and bones, your still oh..what do they say...chunky?

Just wanted to share :)

I am 5' and 150 sounds wonderful but too far in the future to even think about right now. However, closer than it was a month ago.

Along with the diet I have am doing water aerobics. Is anyone else doing water aerobics? Does it really help? Is it as good as "real" exercise?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I love water aerobics....I am in a wheelchair and when I get in the water....I feel "normal";) ...sort of free. I find that the water walking and exercising that I do is very helpful. It helps me keep motivated to move like that and the Dr. says it is very good for the heart. I like to crank up the music and just go for it. I have increased my time in the pool too by getting books on tape(especially books on LCWoeing and diabetes) and playing them while exercising. The past two days of rain has prevented my swim and I truly miss it. So I hope that helps....take care and happy paddling...Nancy:)

My suggested water aerobics because I cannot walk distances because of painful knees. I just don't want to put all my energy into water aerobics if it is not as effective as doing other exercises.

I walk 70 laps around the pool which is around 1 1/2 miles. I haven't noticed getting out of breath or heart beating any faster to show that I am "really getting a workout" but should it?

Guess I need to make an appt and talk to dr about what I should expect to receive from an aerobic workout.

I never thought about a radio that should really keep things moving.

Anyway, thanks for sharing with me. Liz

Actually Diz, I have heard water exercising is wonderful. While doing this in the water its not as painful and with the water pressure when moving arms and legs around, its suppose to give you a good work out.

I would think any exercise would be beneficial :)

hi everybody,

Water exercises are great! I have fibromyalgia, and for a few years, that's the only thing I could do that didn't cause horrid flare-ups. The water supports the joints, yet provides adequate resistance to work the muscles. And easy to work aerobically too .. you can really get the heart rate up, and keep it up.

There are some other strength and resistance exercises you can do too ... use 2 gallon-size plastic jugs (empty, but tightly capped) and push and pull them through the water in all directions ...gives a great upper body workout.

The one drawback is that because the water supports your bones and joints, you don't get the weight-bearing benefits that you would on land ... Weight-bearing exercise increases the absorption of calcium into bones, espcecially hips and knees.

hello everyone. have been reading the posts for a couple of days and decided to chime in. i have around 150 pounds to lose and just started LC a week ago yesterday. i have lost 9 pounds. felt pretty sluggish the first few days and sick to my stomach but pretty good now. i was never a big meat (beef) eater before and so have been sticking pretty much to chicken and fish. try to add salads and veggies as much as i can while watching my carbs carefully. i appreciate all the good advice i have found here. take care.:)

I am sitting here having lunch eating a nice salad with turkey on top and a handful of pork rinds! MORE FOOD THAN I WOULD EVER HAVE ALLOWED MYSELF ON A LOW FAT PROGRAM!

Question: The only salad dressing I really enjoy is Hidden Valley original Ranch. I checked the label and it shows either 1 or 2 gm sugar. So I passed on it. Any alternatives or advice? I don't mind eating my salad dry but once in a while it would be good to have a dressing for a dip or salad.

One gram isn't too bad ... I stretch my salad dressing out by adding some olive or flax oil, or other beneficial oil such as canola (all are zero carbs) .. or 1 Tbsp regular mayonnaise is only 0.4g carbs. Adding some fat/dressing to your salads helps to provide satiety too ..... helps you feel full longer. A bare salad tastes fine, but then you're hungry again an hour later.

I found Newman's Own Olive Oil & Vinegar and his Ranch dressing to be very good. I keep some in a small container in my purse so it is available when we go out to eat.

I am truly impressed with Atkins. I have tried so many times to lose the weight. I have been on now for 5 weeks and lost 22 lbs. Finally into the 2's, now I've got to reconsider my short term goal and decide what I want it to be haha.

Thanks Dizz for the information. I have looked at the Newman's brand but walk away, go back, walk away, go back, walk away........I am going to dinner tonite with some friends and am a little anxious about eating out and what to choose from the menu. I have not advertised the LC eating. I tend to eat 1/2 of what my thin friends eat (starvation) so they are used to my weird eating habits. The place is kind of an upscale old fashioned tavern so surely they will have burgers and things I can have without the bread and other carbs. I know potatoes are loaded with carbs but has as long as we count these and are careful they are occasionally ok, correct?

thanks

I have just been reading all the success stories in this site. The Triple Digit Club is a great support for me. I know I am not the only person in the world that has to lose 150 lbs, but some days it feels that way. I look around and the whole world looks skinny except me. I have been on the atkins lc diet for one week and lost 15 lbs. I know thats a great start and am totally aware that the loss will slow down now that the water loss is gone. It is encouraging to hear of how much people have lost. Thanks for the information and keep posting your success stories for us newbies.

Joodsie, 15 pounds that is wonderful!!! tell what you are eating bite by bite cause I am going to copy it!!:D :D

I am right there with you in agreeing that it is great knowing there are other people in the same 100+ category. I simply cannot get over the fact that I am not hungry and can eat things that I had totally given up eating like cheese. I had some pretty rough sweet cravings the first few days and even a bit of withdrawal but it disappeared and I am sooo greatful!

I LOVE POTATOES!!! So, no I avoid them and because I am staying as close to the induction part as possible. Since I have 150 lbs to go, I want to do the hard part as long as possible then taper up but not much on carbs. I want to keep this off. However, I have not found this to be an awfully hard diet.

As for as desserts I treat myself to sugar free jello with a squirt of whipped cream. HMMMMMM Good!:D

Hi Mdx... I think my success this week was due to the fact that I drank water, then some more water, then a whole bunch more water. I really dont like water but I decided to tough it out and do without the pop to see what would happen. I usually drink 6 - 8 cans of pop a day. Even though it is diet and caffeine free, I think this had alot to do with it. The majority of stuff I ate was chicken, steak, eggs and cheese. Had few if any carbs.
This week I am adding a few carbs in salads and stuff like that. I even made up a fantastic curry shrimp dinner. The few carbs in that was green and red peppers, and mushrooms.

Keep in touch and lets do this together.

Well, tomorrow morning is one week for me ... I'll let you know the official pound count in the morning. As of this morning I was down 7-8 pounds (my scale is not very accurate). I have had digestive problems, though ... actually, I had them before I started the induction, but I thought the diet might take care of it. Since I came home from Guatemala (3 1/2 weeks ago) I have had the "immodium habit" about every other day ... but it's been worse. I bought some acidopholus (sp?) today and I'll see if that will help, otherwise it's time to call the doctor.

I will try to be better about drinking water. I remember in the morning, but then forget the rest of the day .. only drinking during meals.

Thanks for being here.

Good morning all!

I went to my dinner with friends last night and they all ordered fried shrimp:( and I had the chef salad. I was pretty miserable watching them eat bread with their salads and then their shrimp and baked potatoes. But.......IT WAS WORTH IT THIS MORNING WHEN I GOT ON THE SCALE AND WAS DOWN ANOTHER 3 1/2 POUNDS! THAT IS 13 IN ABOUT 10 DAYS!

I DRINK A LOT OF WATER ALSO BUT I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED WATER. NOT MUCH OF A SODA DRINKER BUT IT HAS BEEN HARD GIVING UP MY MILK!!

Yes I have given it up but it doesn't mean that I don't stand in the dairy section at the store and push my face up against the glass looking longingly at the milk carton!!!:D ;)

I ran by the store this morning to try to find some sugar free pudding in the little snack packs. I wanted this to keep at work for when I wanted something sweet. All I could find prepackaged was fat free! However, I have tried a couple of Atkins shakes and they are really good, but kind of expensive.

heading into a meeting, talk to you all later.

"Wow! Is this for real?" Was my doctor's reply, when she read my weight on the chart! Since my last doctor's visit I had lost 20lbs! (Most of the weight has been lost low carbing.) My blood pressure has also been significantly lowered and I have so much more energy than I ever had before! And best of all...No more cravings! I have been low carbing now for a little over 3 weeks and am convinced this is the WOL for me!
My doctor's one concern was that I may be taking in too much fat in my diet. I myself have been watching fat grams, but not counting or limiting myself. Overall though, my doctor was very pleased with my weight loss. I was concerned about the use of artificial sweeteners, I have read that they also induce the release of insulin. But, my doctor feels that the use of artificial sweeteners is okay. And I think that I may feel less deprived if I allow myself some sugar free jello as a snack or dessert occasionally.
Wendy was talking about digestive problems. I can relate to that! I had been plagued with irritable bowels for the past couple years. It was very annoying, not to mention uncomfortable. Since I have been low carbing though my bowels seem to have regulated. I am no longer popping the immodium and have far less gas pains. But, Wendy...If you continue to experience problems I would urge you to visit your doctor. Just thought I would share!
Good Luck everyone! We can do this together!

This is getting to be a very encouraging thread, and I would like to add my congratulations to those already offered. A couple of features about this thread are especially pleasing. One is it is now so positive, and aanyone (as each of us here have been) faced with a long haul needs a positive approach. Another is that these milestones of achievement become like a shared experience almost, and finally the partnering up between members and working through this together is truly heartwarming. Ladies, you are becoming an inspiration to all. Keep up the good work, and I wish you all the luck you deserve.

Hi there! I'm bellablue and new to this web site, in fact I found it by accident surfing this afternoon. I've been on low carbs since the 26th of July 2001. I have 150 pounds to lose. 26 years ago a wonderful osteopath doctor recomended this diet. I tried awhile, then yo-yo'd off to other diet pursuits. I've spent the last 5 years counting fat grams, ignoring carbs/sugar/ forgetting to exercise regularly, struggling with fibromyalgia and menopause, not monitoring my portions of low fat food----enough is enough. This plan makes sense however it's like I'm eating all the "bad" foods (pre-low fat eating conditioning). Anyone else have this problem? How ever I feel great! I have less of an appetite but detoxing from sugar (the first few days) was awful!~~~BellaB

Well, it's day 9 ... down about 10 pounds (I HAVE to get a decent scale). I'm somewhat disappointed reading some of your totals, but I have to remind myself that I had lost nearly 10 pounds in Guatemala only a couple of weeks ago ... so the real total is near 20 pounds in 5 weeks.

Anyway, today I had to go out to eat at an Italian restaurant ... what to do?!?

I had to go, it was a job responsibility. The menu was already set by the one organizing the night out ... the salad was OK, I didn't eat the bread, but the main course was just pasta (Ravioli with pesto sauce, tortelini with tomato sauce, and bow pasta with shrimp alfredo). It was all served family style.

If I took nothing ... it would have created a scene, I'm sure. So, I took only the tiniest servings of each entree. I was surprised no one said anything about me picking out all the shrimp out of the bow pasta.

Now, I will continue with the induction diet ... but I wonder how much it will cost me? What do you all do at restaurants or wedding receptions or other banquet type meals?

Say to the co-ordinator that you have a very bad reaction or are insulin resistant - which is true and sounds dangerous and mysterious- to certain foods a few days before the event. Tell them you don't want anyone to go to any trouble and that a salad with oil and vinegar dressing and a piece of simply prepared meat or fish will do.

To add to Karen's excellent advice, before going anywhere you're not in control of the food that's served, eat! Have a big, hearty, LC snack or a late lunch. That way, if there's carb-laden food you can't eat, you won't feel deprived.

Recently, after a late lunch of chicken wings, I managed to painlessly get through a humungous Chinese dinner (also a work event), nibbling happily away on plain chicken, crab, a bit of duck, and a few leaves of bok choy. The sweet sauces, rice, and noodles just went right on by me - I didn't even notice. And Chinese is my FAVE. It really does work!

I am just starting out on the atkins diet, and i weigh over 300 lbs.

can anyone recommend home scales that weigh people over 300? I have not found one yet. Most of them go up to 250 or even 300, then arent reliable after that.

My target weight is 250, I have lost 13 lbs on the diet thus far.

Please talk with your doctor and see what she/he recommends in your situation.

When my doctor first spoke to me about low-carb dieting, she told me that I should do either the medication (Glucophage) or the diet, not both. Because the diet does, essentially, the same as the medication ... but I didn't have high blood sugar at the time ... was being treated for PCOS.

I have an appointment tomorrow, where i will discuss it with her.

I can imagine a low carb diet would keep my blood sugar low.

Karen
Mon, Aug-06-01, 01:00
Yes, 3rdrail. A low-carb way of eating will bring your blood sugar levels down to normal.

The best thing to do, is read as much as you can about the subject. Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Solution would be a good place to start. There are all kinds of books available. Just click on the Books forum in the red bar at the top of the page.

Your doctor may not be supportive of a LC way of eating. The standard diet for diabetics would put a low carber into a sugar coma.

I visisted my doctor today who told me to go ahead with the atkins diet. I am type II diabetic on glucophage, with a little above normal sugars.

She said to beware of keytone acidosis? and to take my sugar twice a day and watch out for the symptoms.

A Question:

Aspertame (nutrasweet) is bad for atkins dieters? It seems everything contains aspertame... All diet sodas do, even crystal light.

Can i have this in some degree, or is it wise to cut it out completely....

sugar free chocolate pudding sounds so yummy. What do you do about the required milk to the (I'm assuming box mix) since milk has carbs or do you use half and half~~~bella

mdxgirl36
Tue, Aug-07-01, 16:12
I use whole milk but only 3/4 of what they call for and make it up with water. There is either 1 or 2 grams of sugar per serving but I have found that the lower the fat in the milk the higher the carbs and sugar. It is a treat for once or twice a week. I have to be really careful because I enjoy sweets so much I could eat the whole thing at one setting if I would let myself.

This is just a thought--since half and half has no carbs, couldn't you mix 1/2 cup half and half with 1 1/2 cups water--because the pudding calls for 2 cups of liquid if I remember. I also have a sugar fixation--recently tried sugar free jello which is quite good. Anyway just a thought--in order to be able to indulge more:eek: ~~~bella

Great suggestion. I have never checked 1/2 & 1/2. Will definately do that.

Did anyone experience this: This is the start of week 3 for me and I was doing really well as my past posts show. Then yesterday when I got home something posessed me to get on the scales and I had gained 5 pounds! I am really trying to not freak out about this and have told myself I should stay away from those scales and just go by my body and the way my clothes fit. But it is still a little disconcerting! It isn't time for my normal monthly bloating (sorry gentlemen) SO WHAT IS IT??????

the other thing I have noticed is that I can't sleep. I am usually a 8 or 9 hour bed person. My job can be pretty mentally stressful most days and when I get home I am just beat and I am usually in bed at 10:00 at the latest. The last week I have not been sleeping well at all. I get tired in the afternoon at work but by the time I get home and do a few things around the house, cook dinner, clean up and watch a little tv it is usually my bed time. But I can't sleep:mad: The last two nights I have read until after 1:00 am. I get up at 6:00 and I am sorry but this isn't enough sleep for me. Has anyone else experienced this and will it go away if it diet change related?

This is just a thought--since half and half has no carbs, couldn't you mix 1/2 cup half and half with 1 1/2 cups water--

Watch out! Half and half does have carbs - 10.4 grams per cup, almost as much as whole milk which has 11.4 grams. A better alternative is whipping cream at 6.6 grams per cup.

By eating the sugar-free chocolate pudding you're flirting with danger. There are 11 grams of carbohydrates in 1/2 cup of prepared mix when made with milk.

Too many legal treats can set off cravings the same way sugar does.

I would be very sad to see anyones progress and all the hard work that has been put into their new way of eating sabotaged.

Acouple of ideas come to mind--I've always been told that if you are going to weigh regularly it must be the same time each day you choose to get on the scale. It also could be water weight--you'd be surprised how much your body does weight does vary and not just during the time of your cycle. Ofcourse Im a person who didn't go near a scale for 18 years and always judged by how my clothes fit. It was the doctor tricking me to get on the scale that sent me into a panic and a need to make some changes. I have been low carbing since July 26th--not long and won't weigh until the end of summer, I think. I think if you decide to use the scale on a regular basis, I would do it weekly same day, same time and I think you'll see a steady loss---I really think it all evens out:rolleyes: ~~bella

Whatever the case, do not let it get you down. You will lose the weight! Just keep focused and try interesting new foods. I think just prowling around the store looking at the carb content can be an adventure. Just discovered sugar free jello but used the carb free flavored sparkeling water instead of the cold water and then regular hot water as required. Delish! Ended up with orange-strawberry-kiwi jello!! Also tried the melted cheese and sour cream over pork rinds for breakfast--like nachos. Just find foods to keep this eating plan interesting. I don't have a 100 lbs to lose but I was most definitely headed that way. That surely means I qualify LOL

This is a great forum. A very unique atmosphere. Haven't dared click on it before but felt naughty today. ;)

I haven't read half of it but in one of the earlier messages Andy was surprised to see so few men. Men are not under the same pressures as women to be slim. Their conditioning (by Society) is very different, hence their attitudes to weight problems are different.

{Bella: I've always been told that if you are going to weigh regularly it must be the same time each day you choose to get on the scale. It also could be water weight} What a lovely name, Bella. It is true. I was scale obsessed when I started. Then I discovered that first thing in the morning before I eat or drink anything my weight is lowest. After breakfast it goes up a bit. After 2 litres of water it goes up even further. If I haven't "been" for 2-3 days it goes up. Time of the month - goes up: possibly water retention. So I decided only ever to weigh myself when I first wake up. Usually I am so dopey then that I forget and then it's too late. It was a good way of getting past the scale obsession for me. I don't think it matters when u weigh yourself so long as it is the SAME TIME SAME DAY every week. Best way to compare you today to you yesterday.

Anyway that's enough. Can't have you guys banning me before I'm accepted. LOL :p

Take care.

welcome, Fiona! I'm new here also and new to low carbing as well. And i hate scales although my hubby says I need to get over the scale phobia. lol. But the doctor tricked me into getting on one and then came to check out my "ballpark" estimate of my weight. I hadn't been to a doctor or a scale in 18 years until a bad car accident in June which forced the previously healthy me to have to start visiting them. But it did propell me on to a different eating plan--so much for getting on the scale with my eyeglasses off. Thanks for saying you like my name actually it is the name of my very fat cat--bella(godiva). It is a beautiful name though. She's fat from dry cat food and shredded wheat biscuits! I have to agree that the preception of a heavy man is alot different than a heavy woman. Heavy men are often fondly thought of as John Goodman types or he-man types. Heavy women--well, I think people just assume we are all watching soaps and eating chocolates all day. That assumption is insulting as our lives involve so much more~~~~bella:eek:

Well, it's been two weeks and the official count is down 12 pounds. Not bad. I was good about following the induction plan ... now I have to carefully increase my carbs to a healthy amount for weight reduction. How have you all done with that?

I also joined a health club (for women only -- very comfortable even for someone as big as me). I found out when I got there that I was entitled to free membership -- WOW! The routine should be 30-45 minutes 4 times a week. I plan to go as soon as I drop off my daughter at school, then come home, shower and get to work ... should be very doable. What I like about the gym is that it's air-conditioned! I could never get myself to walk on these hot and humid days. (I'm on the Gulf coast of Texas)

If I include the weight I lost just before starting Atkins, I'm down just about 20 pounds and lighter than I've been in years!

Hi Bella

{I think people just assume we are all watching soaps and eating chocolates all day. That assumption is insulting as our lives involve so much more} I know and it makes me so sad. People are people regardless of size, colour, sex, race. But the alienation and segregation throughout the world is something that really makes me sad.

That what I love about this forum. This is one place where anyone and everyone is welcome and supported and .... well ... just accepted for who they are.

Take care.

I think your success so far is wonderful! When I reached 280 I knew I had better do something or the pain in my joints and the stress on my heart was going to kill me. I have no idea how I've avoided diabetes. Like many others, I've gained, lost, gained and lost until I can't remember how many diets I've been on. I'm not looking at this as a diet but as a way of life. Since I started June 28th of this year I have lost all the joint pain and gained so much energy I can't believe I haven't woken up in someone else's body. I still have days where I struggle with temptation, but I'm determined to not give in. I know carbohydrates will eventually kill me if I keep on living the way I have been - so into the dumpster they go!

Good for you Lynne! I, also had lots of joint pain. Mine hasn't gone away yet, but it's much better. I began Atkins 4 weeks ago and an excercize program 2 weeks ago. I'm down 17 pounds since the beginning of the diet -- 25 since June.

The other night, i found myself chasing my 11 y0 daughter around the house -- playing! We hadn't done that in years! I hadn't noticed that I was feeling much better on the plans, but I knew I must be when I realized I had been running after her -- and I wasn't out of breath or anything! It was fun.

I have 13 pounds to go to reach my first goal -- 250 -- 30 something pounds. In a month we'll be taking a trip to our old home in Michigan -- I am hoping to reach my first goal by then.

Lynne, welcome. How well you sum up how we have all been, and why we are now following this way of life. In fact your post is so good, it could be used as our rationale, explaining to outsiders the how and why of it. You have definitely found the right place, and have made a wonderful start. All power to you, and remember, you are now among friends.

Bailey W.S., You will reach your next goal. It's not far to go now, and you will have something to show people back home. Congratulations on your progress. It is not always measured on the scales, is it? Playing like that with your daughter after all this time is another great milestone. You are truly on your way now. Don't worry about the pace, you're getting there. Eebee has it right, when she reminds us that the tortoise won the race!

Hi Wendy - I think it's good to set small goals rather than looking at the big picture. That can become overwhelming. I've got a special occasion in a month too, and I hope to be down another ten pounds for my grandson's christening at the end of September. Let's hope we can both reach our goal and then set another one!

Thanks for the support. I am feeling proud of my work ... and glad that I have short term goals and long term goals. My first short term is 250 -- or 252 -- because that is the 10% mark.

AFter that 240 is a goal (not much further) because that was the weight limit at a stable at which we wanted to ride horses one day ... Katie, my daughter, was too young at the time, and I was too heavy. We made a deal ... she would gain two years and I would lose 40 pounds ... she kept her end of the bargain :-)

Then I guess it's 20 pound increments ... with 200 being a big one. I don't have a real end goal yet ... could be anywhere between 150 and 180 depending on how things go.

But my ultimate goal is to be able to make a hike up a volcano in Guatemala ... the one I was not able to make this summer. I am planning to go back sometime and climb to the top of the mountain! That's the picture which really motivates me when I'm craving something sweet or starchy ... I remember the shame I felt when I had to tell the group that I couldn't make it anyomre ... that I was heading back down the mountain ... I was one of the younger members of the group! That was it ... no more feeling sorry for myself ... I'm going to do everything I can to get healthy enough to climb the mountain.

(I also want to be able to sit in an airline seat without have to ask for a seat belt extender -- oh and fit in the roller coaster rides at theme parks!) See, I'm getting excited ...

Sitting in seats is a great motivator! Somehow for me--moreso than the scale or measuring tape. A few days before I began this program I was sitting in the doctor's office on the edge of his "teeny tiny small woman" chairs. During the process of the visit he manipulated me onto the scale in the corner of the examining room--a place (on the scale) I had not ventured in 18 years (even when I was doing my "fat-free" routine). 3 days later I began this program and on the return visit (11 days later), I easily slid into "the tiny woman" waiting room chair (same chair). Last time I was at the hairdressers the chair was snug which is an awful feeling when you go to rise from the chair--new haircut & feeling great and kinda get held there like having a suction cup on your fanny. LOL. That was pre program in May. Pretty soon I'll be trying that same chair again! Congratulations on marking small successes Wendy! I really believe the long haul is easier that way!~~~bella:cool:

I know what you mean about the chairs at the beauty shop. I feel so sorry for the lady when she goes to "pump" the chair up higher. I try to put on foot on the floor and push haha like that makes a difference. However, 38 lbs lost has made more of a difference. I have noticed the chairs at the movies aren't as snug as before.

My husband has decided to make this easier on me and do this with me. (Actually, I refused to cook two meals eat it or don't haha) He has lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks, down to 145 poor guy! However, hope to see a difference in chol and trigy they were terribly high.

I don't know what energy all you guys are talking about...I don't know that I "feel" anymore energetic but atleast I am not falling asleep all the time anymore.

Good luck to all.

Congratulations Dizz on your 38 pound loss!!! Great that your hubby is doing this with you. In my house (since there are only two of us and he's lost his weight by riding mountain bike to work--7 miles a day) I just have refused to cook and we fend for ourselves. He's a boxed carbo nightmare (Hamburger Helper) guy so I no longer go there. Lucky the kids are gone so dinner is an avantgard experience=="whenever". However I have noticed that I have less of an appetite with the proteins and don't seem to want the three squares a day. Don't know if this is common with everyone or just me. Perhaps someone else on this thread has an opinion on that~~~bella:confused:

I haven't been as hungry, but I still make myself eat three meals a day, plus a snack or two. This is so that I don't get hungry. If I get hungry the cravings are worse and the will power gets weak ;-)

Neither my husband nor my daughter are on this diet -- they don't need to be. Hubby hasn't got an ounce of fat on him, never had; he eats whatever he wants, too -- it's no fair. Daughter is going through puberty now ... we'll see what that does, but so far so good. No extra fat there. I don't know that I think this diet would be safe or healthy for "normal" people. I think it will work for me because of metabolic functioning -- it's a "corrective" diet (Doesn't Atkins say that) as opposed to a "healthy" diet.

So I cook the meat and veggies -- if they want bread, or potatoes, or rice, or pasta -- they make it themselves. Unless I'm feeling particularly nice <VBG>. They also help themselves to carb-loaded snacks. I envy the people who can just throw all that stuff away ... I still have to buy some of it at the grocery store each week.

Hi Wendy, about the effects of this kind of diet on "Normal" people. There is evidence to suggest that it makes them put on weight. It is part of my crusade to stop dieticians and uninformed doctors from thinking that a "one-size-fits-all" kind of diet can be doled out in every instance and be always helpful. It can't. The reason it can't is because there are two different types of metabolism, which both need the appropriate diet. Usually, it is us complaining that low-calorie diets are no good for us. What many people don't realise is that low-carb diets are no good for everybody else. Doctors and dieticians are often slender themselves in the UK, and those who have tried low-carbing and found it to be no good for them are convinced LC diets are no good for anybody. It is very difficult to get them to reconsider, but I constantly try. Incidentally, nothing wrong with red meat. You could survive well on a diet of beef alone 3 times a day.

I am definately in the 100+ Loser club! I started on the diet the minute I got home from Vacation in Reno for Hot August Nights! Yep Buffet, after buffet after buffet, my cousins are on the diet and they talked to me about it, but they are skinny dieters needing to lose 15-20lbs...you can tell if I gain or lose 15-20 lbs!!
I am 23 going on 24 and ready for a change, I was 105lbs in 1st grade! and have made my weigh up to 297lbs. I always said if I ever get to 300lbs My love to the family, but after an inspiring vacation with family and friends I decided to change my life, not go on a diet but change my life, so I needed to lose 167 lbs to make it to 130, first time since I was 8! So two weeks later I am down to 270!! This is really working!!
I have good & Bad days but I found a truffle that is only 3 carbs per square and I have only one when I need it bad enough,

But I LOVE this!

And by next year I will have that job at Hooter's!!

I've made a couple of food discoveries recently which have helped me alot. Since I'm in this for the long haul, having 150 pounds to lose--variety is a big helper. Some folks say they can eat the same stuff every day for each meal but I need a little variety and substitutes. I found the shredded zucchini mock "hashbrowns" listed on another thread here fantastic. Who says zucchini can't pose as potatoes. LOL. Also melting cheese with half and half and pouring over bacon rinds and adding a little topper of sour cream makes me think I'm having nachos. My mate is a potato chip & dip junkie so now I feel I can join in. Also tried a lunch buffet where they had a terrific salad bar with ham and turkey and lots of meat offerings on the food bar and cauliflower with cheese sauce and I made it through that w/ flying colors and stayed on track. Looking at the "long haul" isn't so bad. I just have to keep remembering how much I weighed when I steppped on that scale and how much denial I had been in previously.~~:) ~~~bella

Hi,

I've been reading about the LC thing for a while. Mainly because my husband started to have scary problems w/diabetes. It's been a month now, and he is much better.

I started at 236, want to be 135, so I just squeak in this group. I'm down to 228, and have been holding for 2 weeks. Maybe it's water? Does nayone have any insight as to how being on Depo-Provera might affect this? I'm due for a shot in a few days, and if I suddenly drop 5 pounds, I'll have my answer.

I'm looking forward to reading more posts, I find them very supportive.

Is this all done by e-mail? I find it hard to remember the website to log on to. I am just starting the zone diet. I recently lost 50 lbs on it along with Jazzercise but went way off track. I know how my body responds to carbs so the zone does well for me. Yesterdays weight 292. This morning 290. That 1/2 bowl of popcorn did not hurt too much. Debbie ...

I have the URL to this site forum.lowcarber.org listed on my home page ... also, you can sign up for specific threads so that when a new message is posted to the board it will notify you by email. That's how I stay current with this list.

Regarding the egg ... I think that's a default icon of some sort. There's a way ... I don't remember how ... to pick a different one.

I've been on the Atkins plan for almost 6 weeks. I'm down about 20 pounds and I've lost 7.5 inches in the past 3 weeks. I also workout every morning (except weekends) at an excercise gym for women. It also keeps me motivated.

Good Luck,

Hi Debbie, welcome to our forum.

I just notice you have 4 posts, all in the same thread.

Here's a quick explanation of our forum.

Forum: Part of our web site, where visitors and members can read and discuss low-carbing. The forum is composed of several sub-forums.

Sub-Forum: A specialize discussion topic. This sub-forum is called "Tripple digits" for those of who have more than 100 pounds to lose. This does not mean we only post here, it's just an "extra" support when the goal weight seems tooooooooooooo faaaaaar from reach ;) A sub-forum is organized into threads.

Thread: We are now in one thread inside the triple digits sub-forum :) A thread is meant to discuss a single issue/question around the focus of the sub-forum.

Make sure you visit all the other sub-forums to find out recipes in the Low Carb Kitchen sub-forum, the Daily sub-forum to talk to other low-carbers who have less than a 100 to lose, the jokes and laughter sub-forum, etc. Wendy is the moderator of our very popular sub-forum the "My Journal/Bootcamp" where members posts their daily or weekly entries, food logs etc, and other members check thing out and give feedback and encouragment.

Check them out. Simply click on the "No sugar Zone" logo to go to the main forums page, and scroll through all the available sub-forums. Use the menu above as well to check the main web site for info on low-carbing.

There are a few icons at the top-right corner as well to help you navigate, one of them is the "FAQ" for frequently asked questions.

Great going on that 20 lb. weight loss. I tried Atkins for about 4 months and dropped 40 lbs, and then my Mom died and I got off the diet. I like the zone diet for now, cause it allows a certain amount of carbs, 40/30/30 balance. It is not really a low carb diet per say, but more protein that the ada allows. Keep up the good work. Hi all,

Just to add two small points to Wa'il's comprehensive answers above:-

(1) The eggs, chicken legs and steaks are symbols denoting the number of posts a person has made. You can find out what the values are for each one without even going to the "Comments" thread, by clicking on the symbol beside your name right where it is.

(2) I assume you found your way back to the forum this time by being summoned by e-mail. Sooner or later, you will want to get back here without that help, and will not have the web-site address to hand. The really simple way round it is to look at the top of your monitor right now. Above the Forum Page there is a Toolbar which is part of your own computer screen. Click on the "Favourites" Button there. A drop-down list appears. Click on the "Add this site as a Favourite" line. Then, next time you want to log in, a list will automatically drop down beside your main screen, listing all nominated Favourites. Just click on the one for this site, which will either read "Low-Carb Diet Information" or "http-forum.lowcarber.org", depending where you are on the forum when you add this site to your Favourites. Then you are brought directly to this forum without having to do anything else.

Best wishes.

I am currently losing weight steadily at a rate of 2-3 pounds per week, which is very comfortable. This brings some experiences only those of us on the "long haul" will know. One of them is the daily changes of the stomach area. When you get out of bed, you never quite know what it will look like. Outsiders might imagine that weight is lost a bit at a time on an "all over" basis. It's not. Little parcels of fat seem to be extracted from other parts of the body, and deposited in the stomach area. If you keep to the diet at that point, the addition at the stomach disappears. If not, and you eat too many carbs, it goes back to the buttocks or legs, or wherever. So when you get out of bed, and reluctantly look in the mirror, and see with some shock that the stomach is a little enlarged, it may not be something to worry about. In a couple of days, it will be gone. Then try on some trousers you haven't been able to get into for a while. They fit on the thighs, when they didn't before, they fit round the waist, when they didn't before, and you can actually get them back over the buttocks to prove it! Anyone else noticed this?

Hey Everybody!

I am so ashamed of myself. I have been avoiding logging in lately because of the guilt. For almost the last two weeks I have been straying from my low carb WOL. I started out so dedicated and was proud of the achievements I had made. But, all it took was some stress on the job front and the home front and I was back to my high carb ways. :( I have always been an emotional eater. I don't even feel good when I indulge in a guilty pleasure. In fact, I feel just that...guilty and mad at myself.
One thing I have always appreciated about this forum is that everyone is so supportive of one another. If anyone out there has a pep talk for me, or a swift kick in the pants I could use it! :) I am going to do my best to get back on track starting tomorrow. Your words of encouragement are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Lucinda:)

Hi Lucinda, Welcome back!

Just logging on is a way of getting back on track. For those of us with a long way to go, there may be more than one derailment along the way. The important thing is to get back on the track.

You've done so well already ... I love the percentage markings next to our names ... 24% next to yours ... great work!

I've been on Atkins for 6 weeks now ... and it's getting old somedays. Somedays the cravings really get me ... but lately it's been the stress and depression leading me to eat more than I had been. I haven't strayed from the low-carb diet, but it's been very, very difficult. I think, though, just knowing what it is that's hungry ... in my case the depression was calling out for "feel-good" carbs. What I had to keep tellling myself is -- those carbs will only be a temporary high ... the real high comes from reaching my goal and living my vision.

Good luck,

Raven

Lucinda.

You're right, this forum sure helps in the motivation department. From my short time here i will say there is no judgment from anyone - only TONS of support which is a great thing. Heck, we get enough judgment from "the world" its nice to come to a place where there is always a hand reached out in friendship and a warm hug for support and understanding.

I don't need to tell you I understand how you feel, because you already know that. So let me just skip all that and say that you don't ever have to be ashamed of losing your way or too embarrassed to come here. In fact, the best thing to do is come here when you have lost your way and everyone will help you find your way back!

I have faith in you and know you can do it - You have already proven it, so get back on the horse and ride away into a healthy sunset!

Have a special day.

Hey Everybody!

Thanks to everyone for all the support, encouragement and friendship! I am going to take it one day at a time, as my mantra says. I know that there will probably be more derailments in the future, but hopefully they will become fewer. The next time my emotions leave me craving a high carb snack I will try to log on here, instead of reaching for the M & M's. I know that I can accomplish my goal with the support of this forum. Thanks Again!

My pediatrician has lost well over 100 lbs. & I think I can do it too with this New WOE!!

I've been going "low carb" and have lost 20 lbs. within a 3 week span -- I know that's atypical but probably at first a lot of the weight is ???? . I am not cheating...I am not hungry!! There are no pills to take (diet pills that is) There is No One to pay...(diet Dr.) I feel great---I sometimes have to examine a little more closely what I HAVE ate in order to not throw my body into a starvation mode....This WOE truly makes you feel so much better!!

We're all in this together! Welcome aboard to everyone that is lurking---you can make it work for you!! You have the POWER!
And we're all here to help!!

I started 3 weeks ago and I lost 17 lbs in my first 2 weeks. During last week, my third I lost nothing, so i guess I must have to controlmy fat more ( i ate a lot of cheese). Last nite i fell off the carbo wagon and had a Chicken Korma, Naan bread and 2 glasses of regular coke ..... it was nice, but this morning I felt so baaaaad! I'm going for a swim in a while. I know i have to do induction again, but im going to keep a carbo & fat diary on the fridge so i can find my best level.

I was 297 when I started, I have another 140lbs to go, I guess i have toi keep telling myself .... ITS ONLY FOOD, ITS ONLY FOOD

Any suggestions

I go through phases, but I honestly think its my body saying you need this... when I drink juicee or have a slice of bread, chocolate though is a wrong message, I try my hardest to ignore that!

No matter what the diet promises though without some sort of excersize you aren't going to improve, even if it is only five minutes a day, eventually that turns to 10 then 20 then even longer.

But I hope you stick with it, I am definately seeing results and can't wait to see the real me hiding deep inside.

Most of all Love yourself! If you fall off of the wagon don't be so hard on yourself, but remember to get right back on!

We are all worth it!

Welcome to lowcarb.ca juicyjacki!

Poke around the board and have a look at all the features it has to offer. YOu may want to start a Journal in the Journal forum where you will recieve tips and pointers to help you with your new WOL. Come to the introduction forum and introduce yourself there too. You can use all the forums on this board!

Do not try to control your fat intake, especially in the initial stages. You need the fat to keep your body from going into starvation mode where it will hang on to your fat because it thinks there is a famine coming on.

Have you had a look at fitday.com? It keeps track of % and calories, which should be 10-12 times your current weight.

Keep reading and posting!

Hi, everyone,
I am so glad to have found you! A year ago I weighed 284, and now I weigh 254. My long-term goal is to weigh around 160-170.
(I'm 5 ft, 8 in.)

My hubby (who needs to lose about 250 lbs) & I went on Atkins last fall. I lost about 30 pounds, but we sort of drifted on & off it from about Feb on. Luckily, I've been able to keep most of the weight off, by going back to LC eating for a week or two every now and then (it just whooshes right off! What a miracle!).

As of Monday (10/8), we're back on Atkins, and things are going well.

My first short-term goal is to get UNDER 250!!!! I haven't been under 250 for *years*. You've heard of glass ceilings? Well, I seem to have a glass floor! Actually, I think part of the reason I drifted off the diet last winter was because I couldn't break through that number. (And yes, I was exercising. And yes, I know it's just an excuse! LOL!!)

Anyway, I'm really close now, only 5 pounds and I'll be down to 249. So I'm gonna do it this time, then I'll set another goal. :p

It's so nice to know that a great group of people like you are here to talk with! I can even tell you the "real numbers"! (I can't tell my skinny friends--they'd pass out if they knew how much I weighed! lol)

I'm also excited about checking out the recipes, hints, etc.

Thanks for being here.

And you know what? Don't matter what size we all start at, this woe really works :D

I love your small goals, makes things more realistic if you ask me.

Wishing you all success, I can't imagine where I would be with out this woe and without this site!

Andy Davies
Fri, Oct-12-01, 19:27
I agree with every word of that.

Welcome, Gemini. I know what you mean about declaring true stats, it even took me about six months to declare mine here, after reactions from "skinny" people outside this wonderful "family" type group we call the lowcarber forum.

I'm interested in your husband, too. It's great that you and he can share this way of eating together. My wife is slender, and eats carbs with impunity, so we eat different things, and this makes life awkward, especially as the children eat different food from both of us!

Does your husband suffer any diabetes-type problems? If so, I'm sure this woe and wol will help with symptoms, and bring his readings down. There is a wonderful account of just that on another thread in this section, called something like "100 pounds to lose, and diabetic" (please forgive memory if incorrect).

Good luck to you both, and best wishes.

Hello everyone -

I am quite new to the forum and still finding my way around. I have over 100 pounds to lose and was really excited when I found this thread. I have put my goal as 145 but I know it should really be 120 (that sounds awful to me though)

I am on the Atkins and at the moment I am on Induction (20G a day). My goal seems miles away but for the moment I want to get below the 200 mark. this seems far more achievable at the moment.

I kinda fell of it for 10 days when my favourite Auntie died, but here I am back again and I only put on 1LB despite the fact that those old comfort foods of mashed potato and apple crumble became a daily munch.

Coming back to the site was my inspiration - you don't know how much it has helped. Living in England low-carb shopping is completely PANTS or knickers. So to find an e-mail address for a home delivery low carb shop was a Godsend.

So here I am at 233, having been 245 in September - I know its not great and could have been more but there you go!

This web site is amazing and I have tried many recipes and continue to be inspired by everyone I read about.

thanks again :D

Hi, all,
Thanks for the warm welcome! I already feel at home here, after just one day. :)

In answer to your questions:

Luckily, neither my husband nor I have diabetes.

His highest weight was about 450, but he's down quite a bit now (maybe upper 300's?). We don't know how much, 'cuz home scales don't even go near his weight. But he has gone down several clothing sizes & gleefully discarded belts that are too big! (btw, he's 6 ft. 4 in. tall, but still, that's is a lot of weight!!!)

He also feels MUCH better eating low carbs. He has a lot of intestinal difficulties (when he eats carbs) that virtually disappear within 2-3 days of starting LC eating. It's rather incredible. And he reports much higher levels of energy and well-being on LC.

He has had some trouble with high blood pressure & is on a diuretic for that. We're hoping that, once his weight goes down, his bp will return to normal & he can ditch the pills (he will only do so with his doctor's okay, of course).

One question: I notice that many people have the "% lost" next to their weight (under their name), but that isn't by mine. Is there something I need to do to make that work? Thanks.

So glad to be here!
Gem

I started out at 290 and want to get down to around 175 so I guess I qualify for this group.

I am 6' tall so I am feeling pretty good at 175, or at least I was the last time I was that weight. To think that I was 140 before I had my daughter 25 years ago, and thought that I was overweight then...

Hi again, Gemini,

Glad you feel at home.

Good news about your husband's improved wellbeing on the LC way of eating, and that neither of you suffer from diabetes.

You get the % mark by filling in 3 figres on your Registration Page, which you can edit any time by clicking on one of the icons at the top of the page near where it says "Home" page (I think from memory it is top left button).

The 3 figures are Start Weight, Current Weight and Target weight. Some people put in "lbs" or "Kg" but that just invalidates the entry. Just put in a figure for the number of pounds, and the computer automatically does the rest. I update mine once a week, when I weigh myself!

Good to hear your husband has dropped several clothing sizes.

Keep it up, and Good luck!

Andy

:cheer: Congrats to all of you! Your encouragement and support can certainly turn a bummer day around. You make me proud to be a small part of that.

I'm on day 4 of my re-start and the desire for carbs of all kinds is popping up more frequently. The first 2-3 days this way of eating is different and kind of cool; but now I really miss some of the things my head thinks I want even though my body knows better.
Thank you for reminding me what its all about--Healthier eating, healthier (and hopefully smaller :daze: )body, healthier mindset.

Keep up the good comments

Hi Holly, Hi Firespirit,

This whole forum is great, and in my view this Triple digit section is one of the best parts of it. I'm glad you feel welcome, and pleased you feel inspired. We're in it for the long haul, and often lose two or three times as much as some people's entire target weights. And yet, do you hear people moaning, complaining about their lot, criticising others? No you don't. Not here. What you see is the tremendous fighting spirit of people with a long, difficult, arduous task ahead of them, and often more than their fair share of health problems. They often face abuse and ridicule by outsiders, but they are invariably, in my experience, polite, strong-willed though gentle, and facing all kinds of adversity with incredible dignity and patience. That's what I like especially about the members of this Triple digit club, and why I honour and respect each one of its members.

Good luck everybody, and keep up all the good work!

With sincere respect and good wishes,

Andy.

Just wanted to say thank you for saying hello Andy.
:)

This really does have to be the last eating plan, diet WOL, that I try. I can not believe how much money I have wasted on special diet foods and preparations that I have tried to lose my fat. I will be a success story this time. I will not be fat and forty (don’t mean to offend anyone).

This time it is for ME, for REAL. I am not losing because my partner wants me too, I am not losing weight because my doctor wants me to – I am losing it because of me – MISS SELFISH HAS COME OUT FROM UNDER THE LARD!!!!!.

Having to get rid of over 100 pounds of ‘too much me’ will take a while but so what – you don’t get educated overnight. I do really believe though that having people to talk to is the key.

Thanks again

Well I AM fat and forty ... I'll be forty one in a few weeks. And it was my awakening. Over the summer I went on a hike with some people of all ages -- 19-80 -- to a Mayan village in Guatemala. And I couldn't do the climb up the mountain. I had to stay back with an older (bad heart) man. I decided right there and then 40 was too young to not be in shape -- so if I have anything to say about it, I'm getting healthy.

It will take me a couple of years, probably, but I intend to go back someday and take that hike. And make it.

I know that my motivation this time is right ... I'm doing it for myself, because I don't want to lose out on some of the joys of life because my body is not in as good condition as it can be.

Selfish? No. Healthy attitude? yes.

hi Lethane, and welcome.

You will find everybody friendly and helpful here, and this a great place to be as you lose your weight (notice I don't say "if").

Once you have found your feet, you can start up a journal of your own if you want to in the Journals/Bootcamp section. In that, you can post up your menus, and get helpful advice about any changes you might need to make, or encouragement.

Some people like to use a facility at the top of the home page, entitled "show latest postings". This will give you some idea of what is current around the forum.

Good luck and good dieting...

Hi wendy (Bailey WS) long time no speak. Glad to see you here, and I agreed with all you said in the post above. Hope everything is going well with you. I completed my 4 summaries of published diets, and Wa'il is waiting for some others to come in before finalising the diet summary project. Bye for now.

Best wishes,

Oh, I'm not offended at all ... just thought 40 was an awakening ... I'm not old, just too young to be giving up the things I want and love because of a non-healthy way of eating.

And, yes, I get lots of strength from this forum ... it's good to know there are others who weigh as much and have as many pounds to get rid of as I do.

Notice ... I don't say "lose" weight ... someone once said to me we have a tendency to look for the things we lose ... I say "give up" because I really don't want the pounds back :)

You know I remember thinking"I won't be 25 and fat", but I was--then I thought "I'm going to change this, no way I'm going to hit 30 and fat", but I did. Now, at 32, I just think--"Dear God, help me take some of this weight off" It's almost a year to my next birthday (September), and while I'd like to turn into a "weight loss dynamo" :hyper: I'm hoping to be under 185 by the time I reach the next one. That's what I weighed freshman year college!! Having so much to lose, I've always looked for the "quick fix" including a few things that made me really sick. Now I think it's better to change my thinking--so I've vowed to celebrate each little step of better health!!! :wiggle:

I have noticed that things (like skin, jawline, boobs) are no longer springing back into place like they once did; but once I do lose the weight......well, I'll cross that bridge once I'm there.

Last weekend, I was with a friend of mine buying (art) paint brushes. I ran the palm of my hand over the brush to imagine what the push and pull across the paper would be like. I made the comment to my freind how thick Sable brushes always seemed so sensuous. She, an art major, turned to me and said, "me too!"
The male clerk said, "In forty years of painting I never thought of a brush as being sensuous."
I told him what I'm telling you now Andy, "You really oughta be a woman. It's so great."

Sorry to ask another - my partner wants to be a fireman but is concerned that he is not healthy enough. He was not that keen about me going on LCDiet but over the last week has begun to gain an interest in what I am reading - mainly because of the protein. Is this woe suitable for him - he is not big (168 pounds at 5 foot 11)? He doesn't want to lose weight but needs to get enough energy to start working out etc... should he have more protein to fat or just the standard? What should I do about his carbs?

Sorry that was more than one question, but if you don't ask you don't know.....!

Hi Sticki,

About yor aspiring Fireman...

There is some evidence that people with the other type of metabolism from us will actually gain weight on a low-carb diet (we are usually people with a varying weight record, and a tendency to gain weight easily; the "other" type, like my wife and probably your man, have a static weight record, going back many years, and do not tend to gain it whatever type of food they eat). For us, a low-calorie diet is no good, and for them a low-carb diet does not lead to weight loss. What it does do is build up muscle, because of the high protein content, and as muscle tissue weighs heavy, this does tend to increase their weight (but usually by less than a stone). At 12 stone, your man can afford to gain half a stone or more. (For non-British readers, one stone equals 14 pounds). With his metabolism, he is likely to be one of the people who can get a sudden energy boost from carbohydrates. Unlike us, he might find a low-carb diet, with its constant lower level energy release a little unsatisfying, and he would probably benefit from a few carbs as well. I would think you could both eat almost the same low-carb style food, with just a few carbs added for his energy control. Why not experiment?

Congrats ... yes, my weight fluctuates a lot too ... sometimes as much as 5 pounds in a day ... but if I consistantly weigh in the mornings, I have a much better idea. My scale is digital ... yesterday it was solid on 249 and I kept re-checking it to make sure it was right ... today it was blinking between 248 and 249, finally settling on 249 ... so, yes, I am really there.

I, too, have 240 as my next goal ... seems close to 250, but I have a story. 5 1/2 years ago my daughter wanted to go horseback riding. So, we went to a local stable (we were living in Michigan at the time). We were both turned away -- my daughter because she was 6 years old and their rules said you had to be at least 8 -- me because I was over 240 pounds. I remember saying to my daughter ... "OK, you gain the years and I'll lose the weight."

She kept her end of the bargain :p She's now 12 ... and I'm still over 240 ... but not for long! I know what I want my reward to be ... now I need to find a riding stable nearby.

;)

That's funny. I know you will keep your end of the bargain too. :agree: I miss riding horses. I haven't ridden in about 10 years--because I didn't think it was very fair to the horse :exclm: It's been so long I'd forgotten. I'll have to make that one of my rewards for one of my goals. Horseback riding as a reward instead of chocolate cheesecake....Who would have thought? ;)

Firespirit, Wendy, congratulations to you both! It's great that you can "chase down the pounds together". You talk of rewarding yourselves, but really we all know that the weight loss is the reward! But what a great way to celebrate it after all these years...

Keep up the good work.

And that's the truth ... lately I have been on the scale frequently -- just checking -- because it feel SO good to see those numbers going down.

Today, I went shopping for a halloween costume ... and it is good not to always be wondering if the clothes are going to fit ... because I used to be at the top of the department. Now, two sizes smaller, I'm confident there is something for me.

Talking about a weight barrier. I'm finding breaking my 290 barrier extremely tough. I would get close (291) but then my weight would go back up to 296, then down 3 then up 4. It can be fustrating. I wonder if my body likes being 325 like it was before. I mean I have been over 300 for three years! It makes me worry what breaking the 270 barrier will be like. I haven't been below that in 10 years.
I have never felt so alive and healthy so I love my LC lifestyle alot. So I will just drink my three liters of water and do my best. Losing weight is so much mind work isn't it? :daze:

Lessara, your body didn't like 325 anymore than mine like 324.haha I have been on Atkins for 4 month 1 week and have lost to 268! Trust me, this is better.

There were humps, stalls, whatever, some of it was purely difficult to drop. However, what I find refreshing to me is since this is a wol or woe it doesn't matter if the weight comes off now or a week from now. I know it will simply come off off sooner or later. I love sooner but accept later.

My weight will increase by 2 - 4 lbs in a day. Even the type of food and amount of water taken in and, of course, other things factor in as well. It took a while to decide not the get discouraged just continue to perservere and the weight will go.

My next goal is 264, I am so ready to break 250 it tastes better than anything I could ever eat.

Keep up the good work girl!

Hi Lessara, and welcome to the Triple Digit Forum. I was going to reply to your post at length, but found Dizzy had said most of it already! (Well done Dizz, and if I may say so, it was extremely well expressed too).

The only other thing I think I can add is that the kind of erratic path you both describe does seem to feature more in those of us with a long way to go, than among those with a shorter journey. I love Dizz's philosophical attitude to it though. I am thinking of starting up a thread in which I quote memorable or inspirational extracts from this thread, and paste them all together in one block to encourage and inspire us all. Part of Dizz's last post would be there.

Keep at it, Lessara. I have a point myself that feels like a brick wall, so I can sympathise. In my case, it comes when I lose 77 pounds, and I have currenly lost about 75 pounds. Six years ago, I lost 77 lbs on a low-carb diet, then gradually put it all back on again (and some more besides). Last year I recommenced the low-carb diet I am on now, and I have almost reached a barrier I haven't been through before. You get that nagging suspicion, don't you, that maybe it won't work...perhaps you can't get through the barrier...you get plagued with little uncertainties. Let me reassure you these hurdles are in the mind, keep sticking with it and you really will get there. I really do think Dizz's attitude of "It'll happen sooner or later...I'd prefer sooner, but I'll accept later" is great. It takes the worry out of the situation. You can't lose. It may take a bit longer than you hoped, but you will win.

Best wishes,

Andy

Wendy..wow...guess I have been too busy to notice....how wonderful girl..your doing great...as I knew you would. Heck, with a name like Wendy, how could you fail....LOL

Welcome others, don't give up after a couple of days, this is a woe that works, trust me...I honestly thought, there was no way was I going to ever go on a diet...ever again. I found this woe, and never do I feel like I"m dieting!

Just getting into a new experience I would like to share with you all. As you can see by my stats, I have come a long way. I am one that does not, and will not exercise. Well, since losing this weight I have noticed, skin doesn't go back to where it came from...LOL...like I didn't know, but still dreamed that it would  I got a two week pass to our Y here in town, while thinking about joining...and trust me...only thinking about it. I have now gone a couple of times. The two times I have been has amazed me. I come home feeling good, my body isn't tired like it always is, even before this woe...then during the beginning of this woe, my body woke up..but as this woe went on, I felt a bit of laziness coming back. Working out has brought back the excitement I do believe I was missing. You know...the beginning..when the lbs are coming off...the naps are not so needed anymore...well after going this long...since last march..the naps were starting to creep back in....but...exercising...has began to get me back up again.

I guess what I'm trying to express here is....man, its a long haul...and since I found myself in a slump...stall.....or whatever...I do belive this working out will allow me to feel alive again...something like that....just wanted to express to you all....don't give up....keep going with the woe.....find something else to tweak it..I suppose....I know I did :)

Oh my..I guess I should add....I lost all this weight and didn't do any exercising...then this past week or so...went to the Y....in other words...I concentrated on my eating habits..although I saw so many working out and felt guilty about it. I now felt ready I guess...and just want to share....I wish I started working out earlier.....but working on my food habits I suppose was enough for me. Don't be afraid to take the plunge of working out...if your anything like me exercise is a four letter word....but man it makes you feel great....I cooked two meals...did laundry..and vacuumed tonight...and spent time with my honey...LOL.....honest...

Thanks Wendy ... I'm feeling pretty good right now ... but it's always one day at a time.

I started excercising after the two-week induction. I joined CURVES the health club for women. I do 30 minutes each morning, 5X/week. The routine is both arobic and muscle-building. A group of us follow the same schedule and workout at the same time ... I'm making friends, and getting healthy, it's good.

I don't mind going there ... it's fast paced ... but you only have to do as much as you can handle. I always thought I'd walk every day ... but down here on the Gulf Coast of Texas it is always humid ... we also live in a very industrialized area and the air quality is awful. So walking just doesn't have the appeal it did when we were living up north. CURVES is air-conditioned and out of the rain.

What's more I was offered a free membership because of my occupation -- that was the last straw, I had no more excuses -- so I go every morning at 7:55.

I know I'm feeling more healthy and energetic -- most days, at least. And they measure and weigh me once a month -- keeping a record of weight, body fat, and inches. It's one more way to keep me accountable.

So, Go for it Wendy ... do what feels good for you. And enjoy yourself!

Wow Wendy that's great. Right after the two week induction period too! We have a curves here in town and I went to check it out a couple of months ago and it scared the heck outta me....LOL

I think the Y is more my pace considering this girl don't exercise much.

I am amazed how I feel after doing a work out and I guess excited with this new feeling, I just wanted to share...LOL

(Sure hope I keep this up. Its the getting out that tends to be the problem. When home I'm comfortable and don't want to go out again!)

Hi there,

I back to square one you might say. I've done the Atkins program before and lost 20lbs back then I was around 270 after the program. This time around I'm 309. Anyway I'm so grateful for this website. Because I did the whole Induction so good all week and because I'm so weak. I add alcohol at a party and blew the whole week I worked so hard for and now starting from square one again. But thanks to the support of the website I'm not giving up. But as it stands I'm still in the 100 plus mark. Thanks again for this website....

The first day I worked out ... I couldn't believe the "high" i felt after working out ... it was if the day were clearer, the sun was brighter, the colors were deeper, the air was fresher ... everything was great ....

that was middle of the afternoon ... now I work out in the mornings before I eat breakfast ... and I haven't had that high of a high since ... I'm just NOT a morning person .... but I do know that I have more strength and energy on a daily basis

(Sure hope I keep this up. Its the getting out that tends to be the problem. When home I'm comfortable and don't want to go out again!)

Yes, I understand about not wanting to leave the house. That's why I HAVE to do it in the morning. I get roll out of bed and put on the exercise clothes. Then 10 minutes later I have to drive my daughter to school and continure straight to the gym. If I don't go in the mornings -- which I can't do sometimes because of work commitments -- I never get back. :(

Wendy ... I wish you the best at the Y ... my advice: find a time you can go EVERYDAY and stick with it.

What am I talikng about? If you enjoy it, and find it works for you, go ahead and enjoy it and benefit from it. I'll stay behind with the others who share your old views, as I still do.

Hey, I'm no excercise guru ... I'm still new to this ... and still pass up hard work ;)

It's just that my goal is not just to lose weight, but to have the stamina and strength for a hike up the mountain ... that means I'd better make myself excersise :(

Really? Do I give that sense out on here? I'm not sure what I'm suppose to take offence of...LOL

My arms are really killing me though...no kidding. Found out I was using a machine wrong and did it right yesterday, but I think I over did it....yikes.

I was one that never liked to exercise, not my thing I'm afraid. Heck I have two dogs and they are lucky if they get walks....sorry dog lovers, we do have a large back yard though...50 x 248.

With losing this weight I realized I must exercise now, if I want the flab to go away, or at least firm up. So, thus the Y...thus wanting to share the experience on how great one feels (except for today...LOL) after a good work out. Like I said ealier, just praying that when I join this coming Wed. (two free weeks are almost up) I continue to go

Keep up the good work everyone....tis a long road, but well worth it :D

Ps. everytime I have to spell check cause I don't even know how to spell exercise....LOL

Welcome, Kelly!

I'm pretty new on the list, too. It's amazing how much it helps to be here. I keep finding myself thinking about the things people say & repeating neat sayings (like "You can't win the game if you quit playing," "Progress, not perfection," and "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.") And just knowing that everyone is here helps me decide to stay with low carb eating. It really does make it easier to make good food decisions.

I feel like there's a whole community of people out here rooting for me. And we're all rooting for you, too.

So welcome, and best wishes as you get used to a new way of eating and living.

Hi Lucretiajr,

Welcome to the Triple Digits club. I can help you out a little with some of your points - others will undoubtedly jump in later with more help. There are great people in this club, and I don't mean size-wise!

Firstly, take a deep breath, and try to settle yourself down a little. You are among friends now, so there is no need to panic. This time, it will be the fear of the unknown that is worse, and not the unknown itself!

Point number 1. No matter how long the journey, it has to start with just one step. As we have more steps to travel than many other people, it just takes us longer. That leads us to point2. This weight took a long time to put on, and it's going to take along time to come off. No good beating about the bush - we are in this for the long haul. Point 3. How do we go about this in practical terms? By setting lots of small, achievable goals along the way. Shift your focus from the end result way out in the distance (although not forgetting it) and aim at losing, say, 5 pounds, which you might allocate a 2-week period to achieve.

If you achieve that first goal, it does three things. It boosts your confidence. It gives you faith that this way of eating and way of life can work for you. And it demonstrates that small goals of a few pounds along the way can be repeatedly met. It is exactly this repeated reaching of small goals that finally gets you there. If, for some reason, you do not lose weight when you expect to, we will help you to work out why.

The best way of doing this is to set up a journal in the "Journal/Bootcamp" Section, and every member is entitled to start up one. These are very popular and widely read, and if you ask for help, you will get loads of it. Most new members find it helps to post up daily menus, so that other people can try and winkle out the problem area for you. This is a mutual help service we all do for each other, and it can be very useful.

Most new members, especially those with a long way to go, start out by having trouble with relatives or friends scorning this new way of eating. This leaves the person confused and vulnerable, and very uncertain about whether it will work for them or not. Luckily, you have found the right way of eating now, so in a few weeks' time, when you have lost an appreciable amount of weight, and maybe gone down a size in clothing, relatives and friends start leaving you alone, and you start feeling happy and confident. Then life starts getting much better and happier!

I can't remember any more of your queries for now, but this will start you off. Any questions I haven't answered, or you think of after this, come back to this thread with them, and one (or more) of us will try and answer them for you.

Good luck,

Andy

Andy Davies
Mon, Oct-29-01, 20:23
Having just finished that last post, and several others like it in the past few weeks, has reminded me to mention the following. Just in case some new members who have more than 100 pounds to lose think they can only post in here, this is not correct. All members are entitled to view posts anywhere on this site, and to post themselves. This triple digit club was set up to provide additional help for those with a long journey ahead of them, not as the only place they are allowed to go. I mention this because it has occurred to me that I have only seen certain people posting here, and not anywhere else. Could they really think they have been relegated to the "sidelines"?

Anyhow, just to clarify matters. Anyone is entitled to have their own journal, and contribute posts anywhere else on this site. But if you have more than 100 pounds to lose, you have this additional support if you need it. We have a good relationship with each other, mixing serious issues with light-hearted banter and frivolity, and a popular "following". One of these days, we might even get round to looking at the other threads in this triple digit club, instead of all visiting and posting in this one all the time!

But I don't care. It is just SOOOOO refreshing to write things and ask questions when I know everyone will understand.

I had to lose 176 lbs. And the only way I see to deal with it is to just look at what I've lost so far, which is 33 lbs for me, and to make small goals... Mine are every 10lbs. My larger goals are 25 lbs ones. So my next goals are 290, and 275. I find that its this site that keeps me focused. What about you all?

firespirit
Tue, Oct-30-01, 09:54
Lessara,

I too find the large amount of weight I want to lose pretty overwhelming and far reaching for a goal. So I do the same as you. I'm thinking in terms of 10 lb goals...so my next one is 240.
And...are you reading my mind????.......there is something about those 25 lb marks that just really seems to call for celebration too.
I'm hoping to get to 225 by January 13--that's when I'm taking a trip across country to see friends.

But even better, what I'm learning is to celebrate each lb lost as a little "mini-goal" of its own. So whenever the scale goes down even that little bit, I celebrate. Fortunately I live alone, because who knows what some one else might think if they saw me dancing my short celebratory dance when I get off the scale ;) This also tends to be accompanied by little "Whoo, whoo, whooping" noises :D

It's kind of silly, but I hope to welcome the whoosh fairy, that little spirit of weight loss, by celebrating her every visit, no matter how short

Tue, Oct-30-01, 11:22
Thanks Firespirit! :)

I try not to notice my smaller weight loss because when I gain a few pounds I get depressed. So I "allow" my body to flex up and down in small increments. But when I lose to a 10 mark then I celebrate! I dance too, (Speaking of mind reading) and I go buy something small. A magazine, makeup, a charm. One thing. (I'm not rich! ;) )

I've got a brand new pair of jeans that I can't fit into yet - that is my next goal. I now can get them over my hips, where I couldn't before. Hopefully, if I can get rid of all of my Halloween candy tomorrow, I'll be able to lie down and button them in the next week or two, and maybe after that - zip them comfortably!!

Hi all,

Kezza, Kirkwood, welcome. Lessara, Firespirit, your posts are just getting superb these days.

It's great to hear these other goals and strategies. Gives everyone the chance to weigh up various options, perhaps try a few out, and gradually find your own formula. Thanks for sharing these ideas.

I like the idea of "scale fright".

Hi Wendy, by the way, hope I didn't miss anybody.

Congrats Sticki!

It feels so good when those pounds melt away. You'll for sure reach your goal, if you keep going like that!

I just keep track of my new lows. I weighed and measured at the gym today and I was down 11 pounds since the 1st of October, I lost 8 pounds of body fat, and over 6 inches. Unfortunately, I should have had them weigh me last week when I hit my new low. Today I was up 3 pounds from that 247 mark (still just below the 250, though) ... but you know how these things fluctuate ... a bit of constipation can really mess up the numbers :daze:

Keep up the good work.
