Coke launching vanilla Coke on May 15

ATLANTA - Soft drink giant Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:KO), facing a stiff challenge from archrival PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP) in the crucial North American market, on Monday unveiled a new vanilla-flavored version of its flagship Coke brand.
Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, the world's No. 1 soft drink company, said it would begin distributing the drink in the United States on May 15. A separate roll-out is planned for Canada several weeks later.
Coca-Cola said it expected the new drink, which had been on the drawing boards for several months, would appeal to a wide swath of consumers, though company executives conceded it might cut into sales of other soft drink brands in the short term.
''It has a broad range of appeal all the way from teens to young adults and adults,'' said Chris Lowe, Coca-Cola's senior vice president for worldwide brands and advertising. ''Vanilla seems to cross the generational gap the same way that Coca-Cola does.''
The arrival of the vanilla-flavored drink comes amid a flurry of product roll-outs by both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo in the United States, the largest and most important market for the soft drink titans.
''It's the first line extension in a long time to the biggest brand in the industry and it's happening at a time when innovation and new products are driving growth,'' said John Sicher, editor of Beverage Digest, a leading industry newsletter.
Vanilla Coke will be packaged with graphics that combine old and new elements of the Coca-Cola brand name, trademark and motif. The soft drink maker also announced it had redesigned its Cherry Coke drink to incorporate a similar look.
Coca-Cola recently unveiled Diet Coke with lemon and is reintroducing its popular fruit-flavored Fanta brand. Purchase, New-York based PepsiCo has launched lemon-flavored Pepsi Twist and Mountain Dew Code Red, a variation of its Mountain Dew soft drink.
PepsiCo also sells its own cherry-flavored cola.
Analysts said the product launches highlighted the intense see-saw battle for soft drink supremacy in the U.S. market. Although both companies have scored successes, PepsiCo has been credited by some for better execution of product rollouts and marketing.

I haven't seen it, not sure they are even going to make it since vanilla would not make it DIET anymore.

I don't get it, OreosMama, how would Vanilla not make it (Coke) Diet anymore?

We used to make our own version of vanilla diet Coke by adding French Vanilla Davinci syrup to diet Coke. We also made cherry diet Coke and chocolate diet Coke.
Now that Davinci has a cola flavor syrup, we use that and the vanillla, cherry, or chocolate syrup. It tastes quite good and is sweetened with Splenda, so we avoid the aspartame in the diet Coke.

It's funny, I tried Vanilla Coke when it first came out (couldn't resist); and then went back to Diet Pepsi (prefer it over Diet Coke) and kind of pouted about missing out on the vanilla taste.
One day a light bulb went on and I looked at the unopened bottle of vanilla syrup on the counter and realized I could make my own. I'm now making it with the no-caffeine version of diet pepsi... very nice! I actually tried a vanilla coke today again and prefer my own home-made brew.

I know this doesn't qualify as solid reasearch or any hard core evidence-but- Maybe three weeks ago, I stalled on one of these local network news hours and they happened to be talking about Coke's sucess with the vanilla flavor and that there diet vanilla coke would be coming out within (i cant remember)a couple of months.

My goodness, is this stuff good! I had the pleasure of trying an ice cold one last night. It tasted like a regular (NOT diet) cream soda!
I highly recommend this stuff. Looks like Coca Cola has a real winner! I thought diet Coke with lemon was good. Heck, this new Vanilla diet Coke blows lemon away!!!

DVC is out now, although only in 20 oz. bottles. I believe it is marketing strategy to see how well it sells, before they put it in bigger quantities....they done the same with regular Vanilla coke,... and probably do with everything else... I just never anticipated a drink coming out before to watch it so closely before!!! For me... this is the occasional treat... I hate aspartame... perhaps I could tweak diet rite with the vanilla syrup ( If I could ever find it :( ), and the cream, and come up with something I could drink... but heck... as good as it tasted before... after a month on Induction, my sweet tooth is in a coma... and it took me TWELVE HOURS to finish off my last 20 ouncer of DVC!!!

I got a 600ml bottle of diet Vanilla Coke in a Pharma Plus store in Oshawa, Ontario today. I didn't see it in any of the other stores I was in though. I thought it was pretty good - I tried the regular in the summer and didn't like it, but I liked the diet. Kind of like a bit of a cream soda taste.

FWIF:
In the Washington DC area you can buy individual 20oz bottles of DVC at WallMart and by the registers at GiantFood. They don't seem to have them in any other sizes and they seem to be sold only individually. I have asked if and when they'd be getting 12-packs etc. and was told I probably knew more about it than they did.

The 20 oz bottles is a marketing strategy. Before going "all out" and making any larger sizes of their products, Coca-Cola tests whether a certain product will sell by releasing only 20 oz sizes, and if it sells well, then it will move on to larger sizes, cans...6 packs, 12 packs...cases and the like. They done the same thing with regular vanilla coke, and you can get it in any form you want now

Actually they do have it in 2 litre bottles, and 12 packs of cans - saw them in Walmart and Zellers today.

Well then drive up to Iowa 'cuz this stuff is GOOD! Too good, in fact. I never realized I had a problem with aspartame until I started making this stuff a part of my everyday life. Now I will save it for 'treat day'.
It's worth the drive! :p

I got so excited when I saw it in my cafeteria. But its not my personal favorite (loved the regular) but I think the diet has a phoney aftertaste.
But my fav diet soda is safeway selects diet cherry lemon lime soda so who am I to judge...

I've found this stuff in Ottawa as well. 2L bottles in the Sobey's in Barrhaven.
Not Bad, but I still prefer the Diet Cream Soda Crush, made with Splenda.

MMMMMMMMM - never heard of that diet cream soda. Sounds tasty.
You know we don't have Safeways, here, anymore! I remember going to them as a kid but they have all appear to have closed down in this state.

Safeway now owns Genardis out here ... do you have any of them?
Iowagirl
Fri, Nov-08-02, 09:55
Nope. We have Hy-Vee, Fareway and Eagles (mostly on the eastern side of the state). Still some Econofoods and Cubs in Des Moines area.
The Hy-Vees are nice but a bit much if you ask me. I figure I get enough exercise, I don't need to walk three miles to get from one end of the store to the next while grocery shopping.

I even did a search for you in the Des Moines area on safeway.com and they didn't have anything in your area.
Sorry... :(

People at work laugh at me because every morning I have a Vanilla Diet Coke. I love it! I don't have a problem with aspertame, however, I do try to keep it in moderation. I know the label on DIET COKE products say 0 carbs, but I also count 1 carbs per serving just incase. I find it occasionally in a 2 liter botle and once I found it in 12 oz cans! If you ever shop in the AM when the COKE guy is at the grocery store, ask him (or her) to stock more of the DIET Vanilla Coke. Sometimes they will listen and put more in if there is the demand.

Hello,
Just wanted to say that I tried the diet vanilla coke, and it is very good :yum: . I tried the regular vanilla coke in the summer (just a taste), and I really did not like it. I also tried the diet lemon coke and thought it tasted a bit like furniture polish smells - yuck!! Anyway, the diet vanilla coke is great for a treat once in a while. I don't drink sodas very often, but I think this one's a keeper.

I have not had a better treat ever I dont think! HA and I like the diet chery coke too. The vanilla coke helps take care of that need for something sweet

I bet it would be good with a tablespoon or so of cream in it. After reading some other posts the other night, I tried that trick in a regular diet cola with a couple of cubes and it was good! Like a float.... I wanted to try the diet vanilla yesterday when I was shopping but I can only find it in dozens.
