Hey girls, back from lunch. Did pretty good, didn't get into anything that would get me in trouble.

Corrie
Thu, Aug-08-02, 13:07
Good Girl!!
I had a burger patty with cheese and a little mayo/mustard.
But am not actually leaving for lunch for another 50 minutes.....

Tanyaskees
Thu, Aug-08-02, 13:13
I need to stop going out. Even though I was good, I probably still had too much of whatever, cause I am sleepy.........very.......very........sleepy. So here comes another cup of coffee. One bad thing leads to another.

Corrie
Thu, Aug-08-02, 13:14

Corrie

Thu, Aug-08-02, 14:22
I'm back - Chinese food sounds good Tanya.

Don't know why but I'm starving today - maybe it's because I am drinking so much water - I'm up to 100 oz.

I've had 2 Advantage bars - I know that's not good but I figured it's better than eating something I shouldn't.

Thu, Aug-08-02, 15:02
Hi Corrie -

I've hardly talked to you all day. Did you see how well I'm doing with my water?

Summer

Corrie
Thu, Aug-08-02, 15:09
I did - thats great - when I finish the bottle I am on I'll be at 75 ounces.
I hate it when I have those munchie days - thankfully it's not one for me today - in fact my headache is so bad I can hardly stand it - Must be stress...

summer10
Thu, Aug-08-02, 15:12
You should go home, have some dinner, take a hot bath and go to bed and get some rest... Is that possible?

Summer

Corrie
Thu, Aug-08-02, 15:15
No. I can leave an hour early if I am current in my work as I didn't take a lunch hour yesterday. But even when I walk in the door - I don't have a second - my hubby hands my the baby etc etc etc...

summer10
Thu, Aug-08-02, 15:17
Corrie,

You need to find a way to get a break - (I know it's easy for me to say that.) Maybe you should leave an hour early and go have a cup of tea somewhere by yourself and read a magazine - or just sit.

Summer

You know, Corrie, I know we don't REALLY know each other, but it's hard to believe you don't have any woman friends - you are so compassionate and such a good friend to all of us. If we all lived in the same block we would surely be friends.

Corrie,

Where did you go???

I am getting ready to leave now. I hope you have a good night and try to get some rest.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Corrie
Thu, Aug-08-02, 15:28
Well..... I really dont.

I touched on this topic about a million pages ago - but the "so-called" friends I had were causing problems in my personal life etc and we (my hubby and I) decided we needed to do friend inventory.....and we got rid of all the leeches, hanger on'rs, jealous stupid malicious (sp) people......well - that turned out to be pretty much everybody.

And to tell you the truth I (we) haven't really met anyone in a long time...I am a really strong person and a lot of people are intimidated by that or want me to fix everything - ya know what I mean?..........we don't really fit in here you see - we aren't mormon. We ride a scooter, we like a cocktail, we like scary movies. etc etc etc. we don't eat jello.....

We just joined a scooter club and met some nice people through there - but they already have their little social status' mapped out and it takes a while to break in - I mean...I have been at this job for 8 months now and sometimes I don't think they would miss me......the girls had already paired up. No room at the inn.

Hi Corrie!

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:12
I took your advice and took 3 pm's last night at about 9:00 - was out by 10. I woke up a few times during the night but was able to go right back to sleep - so I feel a bit more rested today....
I ended up at over 117 ounces of water yesterday....

Tanyaskees
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:15
Good for you Corrie, you needed the sleep. I wake up during the night all the time, most of the time with a dog on my head...............LOL.

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:17
LOL - that's funny!!!
Well - I need decaf and water - then vitamins - back in a flash!

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:22
So what's up?? Where is summer??

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:22
Good morning everyone - I am sooo glad it's FRIDAY!!! This week did go by fast... I've been in a meeting since I got here and just got back.

Rhonda,
How was your meeting yesterday, did everything go ok?

Corrie,
Glad to hear you got some sleep.

Summer

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:25
Summer - there you are! how was your meeting?? So - what does everybody do again???

Rhonda - you work for the government?

Tanya - computer programmer - right?? Writing code? What kind?

Summer? What do you do?

I am a project coordinator for a general contractor. It means I help the project manager run the construction project.....

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:28
Corrie,
Construction as building?

I work for a multi line insurance company, I'm an underwriting manager.

Summer

Tanyaskees
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:38
Good memory Corrie, I write code, mostly HR stuff, benefits and stuff like that. Mainframe is my thing, but I am learnign the server stuff slowly.

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:42
Cool!!
Yes - Construction as in building. I help run the project - hence the title "Project Coordinator"...
I adore it - have been working in construction for 20 years. This is the best job I have ever had. The company is just the right size - Big enough to offer insurance but small enough that you know everybody your work with.

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 09:48
Corrie,
That must be interesting.

Tanya,
I'm always impressed by techies - are you one? It's all I can do to get my computer up in the morning.

For some reason I am having trouble getting the water down today.....

sydneyalex
Fri, Aug-09-02, 11:41
Hey guys.....I was out of the office for a bit...

I do work for a government contractor - BAE Systems.....

You all sure have been busy talking....I am behind on my water today. When you have to get out of the office and away from the bathroom, that happens.

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 11:59
I am behind on mine as well. I got hungry for a change this morning so I ate my lunch early. I need to get on the water!

sydneyalex
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:03
Corrie - I see you got a bit more sleep last nite...good for you....
I am fighting a headache today.....probably have it all weekend.

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:06
Take something for it before it gets outta control...

sydneyalex
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:17
I have only 2 zomig and they are at home in the medicine cabinet.....I took one before I left this morning and it didnt help.

I am holding a little kitten as I talk to you guys....I brought her in for a guy here at work today...she is curled up in my lap...so so cute....she helped me eat my pork chop for lunch, then she bathed and fell asleep in my lap......

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:21
Oh man - I am gonna melt!!! I LOVE KITTENS!!!

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:23
I'm back. I just had an Advantage bar and an ice coffee.

My friends are going out tonight for drinks, not sure if I am going to go. I know I could go and not drink but I feel like going home and getting my exercise in for today. (This is the friend that I mentioned before that is annoyed with me because I'm doing Atkins. So now she's mad that I'm not going)

Rhonda,
Did you take something for your headache? You don't want to feel lousy over the weekend.

Summer

sydneyalex
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:24
I just wish they would always stay kittens....not grow up.

Any news on your son Corrie?

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:25
Oh - people can be so irritating. She is just comfortable with you the way you are and doesn't want you to change....Is she skinny? Pretty?

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:26
Rhonda,
Did your cat have kittens?

sydneyalex
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:27
Summer I took something early this morning but it didnt make it go away......and your friend will get over it....she is just mad that your losing weight and she is not....you know how cruel some women can be!

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:29
Yeah - where did you get it???

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:32
Corrie,

I know people get used to how you are - that's the mold you're in and they don't want you to change. She is really small, short and probably a sz 10 but she thinks she's overweight for her size. Certainly no where near as overweight as I am.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but I know she doesn't want me to lose weight. I don't understand why people get like that - it's not like we are together all the time - and it's like the size of my body has any bearing on her. It's very strange, although it seems common.

Summer

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 12:52
Summer - I know exactly what you mean - people, especially women can be very cruel. People see my pictures before I gained my weight back and they tell me I was too skinny....whatever. They were used to me fat and not comfortable with my new self confidence ..... I told you - I am intimidating enough as it is - but add beautiful and skinny on top of that.....well you guys know how it is!!!

She is just jealous cause you have already lost the amount of weight she thinks she needs to loose. She see it works and is just too lazy to do it so she tries to undermine your efforts. Plus you'll be a bigger threat when you are skinnier than she is.....Who needs friends like that???

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:22
Corrie,

I know, but most times she is a good friend. Actually people think she is a wonderful person. She's really thoughtful and I think she tries to be nice. In some ways I think people do this subconsciously.

Summer

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:25
I know what you mean - I didn't mean for you to kick her to the curb, it was meant like...jeeze with friends like that who needs enemies? And you are right - they can do it subconciously. But even the nicest person has a little jealous streak they hate to admit comes out at times......

Tanyaskees
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:25
Hi girls.....I am BAAAAAAKKKKKKKK. Lunch was soooo good. Indian food, but I was good.

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:34
Corrie,

I guess I'll see how it goes when I am thin... I really can't wait for that day.

Last time I was thin - many years ago, I lost alot of weight and people - even strangers treated me differently. I found it really annoying. I was much quieter then so it will be interesting to see how it goes this time. I really can hardly wait.

Gee Tanya,
Do you eat out every day??? You're having much better meals than I am.

Summer

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:37
Summer - you will be great!
Because you are already great!

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:43
Thanks, Corrie.

I want to have the satisfaction of getting to my goal. But I will also enjoy (a little) the satisfaction of proving that I could do it!

Don't you think people treat you differently when you are thinner?

Summer

sydneyalex
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:46
Tanya - how do get to go out every day....lucky girl..

Summer - I agree with you...and what Corrie said is so true...and people do treat you different when your thin.....

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:51
Oh absolutely - when I was thin people treated me way differently and now that I have a new batch of people here at work who have never seen me anything but fat - the last few months have been really fun.
But even strangers treat you differently.

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:57
The most bizarre thing for me was that I actually got better service in stores. (When I was heavy I didn't know I wasn't being treated as well!) And the really strange thing that you could sort of understand if MEN were treating you differently, but just as often, it was women!

Summer

Tanyaskees
Fri, Aug-09-02, 13:59
Twice this week, normally it once every couple of weeks.

Corrie
Fri, Aug-09-02, 14:02
Summer - you're right - you get better service from men AND women. I don't think people even realize they are doing it sometimes.....People can be so rude.
But just think - you will reach your goal and you are doing it the right way! You are making a life change and it will happen for you!
Soon we can all STRUT!!!

summer10
Fri, Aug-09-02, 14:08
I agree, I don't think it's always intentional either. But I do know that I don't do it to other people.

It will be great when we all get to our goals!

Nothing is new with me. You guys have any travel plans for the rest of the summer?

Summer

Corrie
Mon, Aug-12-02, 10:37
LOL - that's all I wanted to do all weekend. Yesterday I actually entertained the idea of going to the store for some beer - but made it through ok.
If you are going to have a drink the best thing is alcohol like vodka - gin - rum etc., with water - soda - or a diet pop. It has no carbs - but is a different kind of fuel. So you won't lose - but shouldn't mess up your blood sugar either...

Tanyaskees

Corrie
Mon, Aug-12-02, 10:39
Tanya - me either.
I took PM's again last night to help me sleep.....can those things become addicting????

Tanyaskees
Mon, Aug-12-02, 10:47
I don't think you can become addicted to them. But I would still watch it, for a while I found myself taking them all the time cause it is so much easier to fall asleep, but once I realized what I was doing, I stopped. I still take them occasionaly though, when I have taken a nap and Iknow I will have a hard time.

Corrie
Mon, Aug-12-02, 11:01
Thanks - I'll keep my eye on it - It is the first time I used them since last week tho....

Corrie - dont feel that way...we cannot help what our children do...my daughter was in detention many times when she was a teenager...been to court with her many days too....It was very hard. I was still on my own with a new baby...she was 14 and got sent away to boot camp.....She used to fight me and hit me...I thought at one time she would kill me one day...but once she got about 19, she changed...she is a wonderful person today (she is now 21) and we get along just fine.

She had lots of anger built up inside////her dad ignored her and I married a complete idiot who tried to molest her...I felt like I failed too but today she re-assures me that I am NOT a bad Mother and she loves me dearly....At the time she was staying in trouble..she would never have told me that....I know it seems like your the only one this is happening to but believe me its everywhere....There were times I didnt know where she was either and she hung out with a really bad crowd...and her being a girl it made it really hard....Cops have been at my house in the middle of the nite bringing her to me....I have been down that road...and I gave her the world....SO YOU ARE NOT A BAD MOTHER....he will come around and be sorry...wait and see!

OK - I will get off my soapbox now!

Corrie,

I agree with Rhonda. You can't control what your children do, you can try to guide them but they will make their own decisions. It's really hard to watch while it's happening and it's really painful. But all you can do is be there for them when they finally (hopefully) see the light.

I didn't have coffee today. And I have a headache! I am trying to give it up again. I saw a show on PBS over the weekend about a dermatologist who has this theory that your skin is better if you don't use sugar (and refined carbs) and he also said if you gave up coffee for 6 weeks you would lose 7-10 lbs. So I figured I'd give it another try.

I have to admit my skin is better since I've been LCing. But I didn't think the coffee would affect my weight loss because there's no calories in coffee, (that and I didn't really want to give it up!)

Coffee (caffeine of any kind) can elevate your insulin levels - it has nothing to do with calories. And if your insulin is up you won't burn fat - could be why you were having problems getting into ketosis before.

Corrie
Mon, Aug-12-02, 13:24
And that means you won't burn fat EVEN if you are following a LC diet. If your insulin is up you STORE fat - not burn it.
You have to follow the LC Diet PLUS avoid foods that can elevate your insulin levels.

If not, you could be wasting your time....

Tea and Caffeine

download pdf version

What is caffeine?

People have enjoyed caffeinated beverages for many years Caffeine is a naturally occurring substance found in the leaves, seeds or fruits of at least 100 different species worldwide and is part of a group of compounds known as methylxanthines. The most commonly known sources of caffeine are coffee, cocoa beans, cola nuts and tea leaves. Caffeine is also added to specifically formulated 'energy drinks' and pharmaceutical products such as cold and flu remedies.

Coffee and tea also contain other dimethylxanthines; theophylline which has similar properties to caffeine and theobromine whose pharmacological actions is far less potent than caffeine and theophylline.

The amount of caffeine present in products depends on the type of the product, the serving size and the preparation method. For example a 190ml cup of tea contains 50mg of caffeine, one third less than the same amount of an instant cup of coffee (75mg). Table 1 gives an indication of the amount of caffeine found in other drinks compared to tea:

Table 1

Type of Product Caffeine (mg/ serving)
Tea All types 50mg/ 190ml serving1
Coffee Brewed (filter or percolated) 100-115mg/ 190ml serving1
Instant 75mg/ 190ml serving1
Cola drinks Standard and Sugar Free 11-70mg/ 330 ml can2
'Energy' drinks All types 28-87mg/ 250ml serving2
Chocolate Bar 5.5-35.5mg/ 50g bar2

On average we consume 3.98mg of caffeine /kg body weight per day ie 239mg/ day for a 60kg person3.

What is a safe intake of caffeine?

Up to 300mg/day (6 cups of tea) is considered moderate, with no evidence of harmful effects in the vast majority of the adult population. Some individuals are sensitive to caffeine and will feel effects at smaller doses than other individuals who are less sensitive. For this reason, these individuals may need to limit their caffeine intake.

Metabolism and Clearance

Caffeine does not accumulate in the body over a course of time and is normally excreted within several hours of consumption. The rate of caffeine elimination varies between individuals and this maybe as a result of genetic factors affecting the enzymes involved in the metabolism, or due to certain lifestyle factors eg smoking. Children also metabolise caffeine at a quicker rate. Generally caffeine absorption is complete within about one hour after ingestion and the plasma concentration peaks after about 60-90 minutes. The half-life of caffeine in the plasma is about 2.5 - 4.5 hours in healthy adults.4

Caffeine Tolerance

A number of different factors affect individual tolerance to caffeine, including the amount ingested, the frequency of caffeine consumption and individual metabolism. It is widely recognised that gradual tolerance develops with prolonged caffeine use.

Physiological Effects

Caffeine is a pharmacologically active substance, and depending on the dose, has a number of actions:-

Central Nervous System Stimulant. A moderate caffeine intake can cause mild stimulation that maybe beneficial in terms of increased alertness, concentration, improved performance and decreased fatigue.5-10 However, higher intakes may affect sleep, cause nervousness and an irregular heartbeat.
Weak Bronchodilator. As a result, interest has been shown in its potential role as an asthma treatment. A number of studies have explored the effects of caffeine in asthma and the conclusions from a Cochrane Review suggest that caffeine appears to improve airways function modestly in people with asthma for up to four hours after consumption.11
Diuretic. The diuretic action of caffeine may be due to an increase in renal blood flow, leading to an increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), or due to a decreased reabsorption of sodium in the renal tubules. The diuretic effect of caffeine is dependent on the amount consumed and duration of intake eg the caffeine in tea does not have a diuretic effect unless the amount of tea consumed at one sitting contains more than 250-300mg of caffeine, equivalent to between 5 and 6 cups of tea.12-17
In fact, due to the volume of fluid that is drunk whilst enjoying a cup of tea, the British Dietetic Association advises that tea can contribute towards the daily-recommended fluid intake of 1.5 to 2 litres.

Cardiac Muscle Stimulant. Moderate caffeine consumption does not increase cardiac arrhythmias.18
If regular caffeine consumption is stopped abruptly, symptoms such as headaches, irritability and fatigue may occur. These effects are usually temporary, disappearing after a day or so and can be avoided if caffeine cessation is gradual.

Caffeine and Health

The role of caffeine in the development of certain diseases and conditions has been the subject of extensive research in recent years.

Cancer
A number of studies investigating the impact of caffeine in the development of cancer have failed to establish a relationship.19-22 In fact, tea is one of the richest sources of flavonoids, a powerful group of antioxidants. The role of antioxidants in the prevention of free radical damage has led to suggestions that tea maybe anti-carcinogenic.23 Despite interesting preliminary research, further work is required to prove its beneficial effect in this area.
Heart Disease
A number of studies have investigated the relationship between caffeine and heart disease and results from these and epidemiological studies have led to the conclusion that the ingestion of moderate amounts of caffeine is not associated with any increased risk of heart disease.24-28 The Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy concluded that 'there is little evidence that caffeine itself has any relation with CHD risk' in the 1994 Nutritional Aspects of Cardiovascular Disease report.29
Parkinson's Disease
Observational studies have suggested that caffeine may play a role in protecting against Parkinson's disease,30-31 although further research is required to determine the exact mechanism.
Relief of headaches
In a study of 301 regular headache sufferers, researchers found that a combination of ibuprofen and caffeine was better than either drug alone in relieving pain.32 Although a caffeine 'pill' was used in this trial, the researchers believed that caffeinated beverages would work just as well. However, they did warn that chronic headache sufferers should avoid caffeine because it might exacerbate symptoms. More work is required in this field before firm conclusions about caffeine and pain relief can be drawn.
Pregnancy
Caffeine crosses the placenta and achieves blood and tissue concentrations in the foetus that are similar to maternal concentrations. For this reason recent advice published by the Food Standards Agency33 recommends that pregnant women should limit their intake of caffeine consumption to less than 300mg/ day (equivalent to 6 cups of tea/ day). At this level there is little evidence to suggest that the health of the unborn child or mother is affected.
top

In Summary…

Despite recent publicity about caffeine, the fact remains that the consumption of caffeine at intakes of 300mg/ day has no adverse effects in the vast majority of the adult population. For this reason an average intake of three to four cups of teas34 a day is well within the level considered safe.

Effects of Caffeine on the Recognition of and Responses to Hypoglycemia in Humans

Summary:
The authors of this study wanted to determine if consuming caffeine has any effect on blood-glucose levels. Eight healthy, non-obese volunteers were each given either a caffeine-free cola or a cola with 400 mg. of caffeine while their glucose levels were controlled by a hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp. Those who consumed the caffeinated beverage had higher levels of the hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine and growth hormone 30, 60 and 90 minutes after intake, compared with those who drank the caffeine-free beverage. Subjects who consumed caffeine also claimed that they felt as though their blood sugar levels had dropped. Researchers concluded that consuming caffeine made subjects aware of low blood-sugar levels at a level that normally would not be considered low. Subjects had symptoms indicative of low blood-sugar levels even though their levels were “low-normal.” Researchers stated that this experience is very similar to that seen in people after they have eaten a very large carbohydrate meal.

Commentary:
The findings of this study can be applied to the Atkins Principles of Weight Loss, Weight Maintenance, and Good Health. Consuming caffeine may affect blood-sugar levels. If blood-sugar levels drop, you may feel hungry, leading to increased food intake and interference with weight loss. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is important to good health, weight loss and weight maintenance. The Atkins Nutritional Approach™ does not advocate the consumption of caffeine. Instead, it recommends drinking water, green tea and other low-carbohydrate beverages.

Corrie

Why is caffeine unacceptable in the Atkins Nutritional Approach?

Excess caffeine can drop blood sugar levels and leave you craving sweets. If you're addicted to caffeine, you must give it up. The best way to do this is to segue from the high-octane stuff to decaf by gradually adding decaf to your full-force brew until you are drinking straight decaf, which you can enjoy with cream. Water-processed decaf is preferable because it does not use chemicals, as other decaffeinating processes do.

For many people, even those resistant to weight loss, breaking through a plateau is often a matter of making simple dietary changes. In other cases, an outside cause may be the culprit. You may need to modify your lifestyle and consult with your health-care practitioner. Here are 12 items to consider:

Look for Hidden Carbs
The first step is to examine your diet more closely. As Heimowitz explains, "Hidden carbohydrates are everywhere, and you can end up eating them without realizing it." Be especially careful when it comes to foods marketed as low-fat. Manufacturers often make up for flavor in the missing fat by adding high-carb fillers and sugar. Also avoid candies and cookies labeled sugar-free. The products may not have any cane sugar in them, but they may still have at least 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Sugar, thickeners such as cornstarch and fillers such as milk solids are found in all sorts of processed foods, including many canned and dried soups, salad dressings, sauces, gravies and frozen vegetables in sauces.

Watch out for condiments, too. Barbecue sauce, ketchup and sandwich spreads often have added sugar. For example, there are nearly 3 grams of carbohydrates in a tablespoon of teriyaki sauce. When you're food shopping, read labels carefully to find hidden carbs, and stay away from them. Remember that other seemingly innocuous foods also contain carbs that should be included in your daily tally. For example, a tablespoon of lemon juice includes a gram of carbs, as does a tablespoon of skim milk or balsamic vinegar. And even a tiny sweet gherkin pickle packs a whole gram. While seemingly insignificant on their own, these can add up fast.

To determine if you're being sandbagged by hidden carbs, Heimowitz suggests keeping a food diary for a few weeks. That way you can easily judge if your carb intake is higher than you realized.

Stop Consuming Aspartame
If you're sure you're not eating any hidden carbs, take a closer look at other aspects of your diet. An observation at The Atkins Center has been that when certain people discontinue their use of aspartame, their weight loss resumes. The artificial sweetener is marketed under the brand names of NutraSweet® and Equal®. To eliminate aspartame from your life, give up most diet sodas, especially colas (many of which also contain caffeine). Instead, use sweeteners such as sucralose, marketed as Splenda®, or saccharin, marketed as Sweet'n Low™. Again, you also need to examine the labels of all beverages, particularly sugar-free ones, to make sure that aspartame is not an ingredient.

Don't Skip Supplements
Dr. Atkins recommends everyone supplement his diet with vitamins and minerals to make up for deficiencies in food resulting from overprocessing, depleted soil and other environmental assaults. Taking Atkins® Basic #3 Multivitamin Formula, Atkins® Essential Oils Formula and Atkins® Dieters' Advantage Formula in combination ensures adequate intake of all essential nutrients. The trio also includes certain nutrients that aid in weight loss, including chromium, pantethine, selenium, vanadium and biotin to help stabilize blood sugar and metabolize fat. Once you are on a balanced nutrient-supplementation program, you should experience a decrease in appetite and your metabolism will likely operate more effectively. The result will be renewed weight loss.

Overweight or Overgrowth?
After years of eating a high-sugar diet, it's quite possible that your digestive tract has an overgrowth of an organism known as Candida albicans. When that happens, the beneficial bacteria in your intestines get crowded out. Candida (also known as yeast) overgrowth also provokes food intolerances, headaches and immune-system weakness, and keeps you from losing weight by causing unstable blood sugar and major carbohydrate cravings. Once your practitioner has diagnosed a yeast overgrowth, you'll need to eliminate some foods from your diet until it clears up. Typically, the first food to go is sugar. Candida thrives on sugar, so a sugar-free, controlled carb approach will starve it out. It's also important to eliminate yeast and fermented foods such as sourdough breads, pickles, beer, wine, vinegar and many cheeses. Also omit nuts, which can contain mold.

Move Your Bod
Exercise is another way to help break through a plateau. Increasing your activity level burns off fat and restores muscle mass. But don't overdo it and don't expect to see results immediately, cautions Eberstein. "If you're just beginning, start with some easy aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking for 20 minutes or so. If you have not been active, check with your health-care practitioner about what your cardiovascular system can tolerate. The effect of exercise is cumulative. It could take several weeks before you start to get off your plateau." If you already engage in an exercise program, increase your frequency or level of activity.

Review Your Medication
Weight-loss plateaus are often caused not by what you eat but by prescription drugs. Drugs for high blood pressure, especially diuretics and the drugs known as beta-blockers, can make your body extremely resistant to weight loss. A lot of cardiology patients who come to The Atkins Center are taking these drugs. They can't lose weight while they're on them, but being overweight is a big reason for their high blood pressure.
At The Center, the solution to this circular problem, he explains, is to gradually taper patients off blood-pressure medications and replace them with herbs and dietary supplements. As patients lose weight and improve other aspects of their health, their blood pressure often returns to normal, eliminating the need for any treatment. Always discuss any change in medications with your health-care practitioner.
The same chicken-and-egg situation applies to patients who are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants. Common side effects of SSRIs, such as anxiety, sleeplessness, nervousness and headaches, actually create carbohydrate cravings. For example, about 10 percent of people on Prozac® have appetite loss, but about a third experience increased appetite. Patients quickly start to lose weight when they stop these drugs.

Natural substitutes for SSRI drugs include the herbs St. John's wort and kava kava or inositol hexanicotinate, a B vitamin. Warning: Never stop antidepressants on your own—you need to taper off these drugs slowly—and that there can be interactions with alternative remedies. Don't forget to consult your doctor. Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs also keep you from losing weight and they're potentially dangerous as well. At The Atkins Center, we stop statin drugs immediately. Our low-carbohydrate eating plan alone will improve blood lipids.
Forget the Java
Excessive caffeine has the same weight-loss-inhibiting effect as aspartame because it can cause low blood sugar, making you crave carbs. Caffeine is found not just in coffee and tea but also in chocolate and many soft drinks. Switch to decaffeinated coffee and tea, experiment with flavorful herbal teas or stick to plain, pure water. You may miss caffeine or even experience withdrawal symptoms at first, but, as Eberstein points out, "We often see weight loss start up again as soon as patients remove caffeine and aspartame from their diet."

Are You a Diabetic?
The most fattening of all the hormones is insulin. Diabetics who have to inject insulin find it almost impossible to lose weight. Oral drugs are almost as bad. According to Dr. Atkins, "The majority of oral medications for diabetes have a weight-gain effect. Even drugs that don't stimulate insulin have this effect. The one drug that does help diabetics control their blood sugar and lose weight is metformin, marketed under the brand name Glucophage®. At The Atkins Center, physicians often prescribe this for diabetic patients when they start the Atkins program. Once they've been following it for a while, their need for the drug almost invariably disappears."

Get Back to Basics
If simple dietary changes and some exercise don't get you off your plateau, it's time to go back to basics. As Dr. Atkins explains, "Because people lose weight so easily on the program, they tend to start sneaking in some extra carbohydrates. That makes weight loss slower, but you still keep losing. Add just a few more carbs, though, and you've exceeded your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing [CCLL]. That's what has happened when you hit a plateau. To get off it, go back to the Induction phase for three or four days. You should start losing again. Then slowly add back a few carbs, being sure to stop just below your earlier CCLL. That will establish your new CCLL." Stick with it, he adds, and you have an excellent chance of avoiding more plateaus as your weight loss continues.

Is Your Food Fighting Back?
Unsuspected food intolerances can be a major roadblock to weight loss. Many patients at The Center, for example, turn out to be allergic to wheat and wheat products. Other common allergens include soy, milk, cheese and eggs. People with food intolerances often have gastrointestinal problems, along with joint pain, anxiety or depression, and other symptoms. Your practitioner will use a process of elimination to uncover any food allergies. It takes time, but it will be worth it when your weight loss picks up and your overall health improves.

Whenever a patient at The Atkins Center has real trouble losing weight, the physicians always check for other medical problems. The one that comes up most often is a sluggish thyroid gland. As you age, it's not unusual for your thyroid to stop producing enough of the hormones that control the speed of your metabolism. When that happens, your whole body slows down; you gain weight and can't get it off. Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is easy to diagnose, even though it doesn't always show up on standard lab tests. Working with your doctor, keep track of your temperature, taking it orally four times a day over several days. If your average temperature is lower than 98° F, a sluggish thyroid is probably the cause of your plateau. Other symptoms of subclinical hypothyroidism are dry skin, brittle nails, hair loss, sleep disturbances, depression and lethargy. The treatment for hypothyroidism is straightforward. As Dr. Atkins explains, "I use the therapeutic trial for thyroid. After examining blood-test results, I start patients with a very low dose of a prescription thyroid hormone replacement and build up gradually and very carefully. In most cases, when we reach the right dose patients start to feel dramatically better. They have a much better sense of overall well-being, with much more energy and vitality. Best of all, they start to lose weight again."

Reconsider HRT
After insulin, Dr. Atkins believes that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a leading offender in terms of inhibited weight loss. Menopausal women who take estrogen or an estrogen-progesterone combo have a lot of trouble shedding pounds. In fact, weight gain, water retention and skyrocketing triglyceride levels are well-known side effects of HRT. "There are better, more natural ways to treat menopause symptoms," Dr. Atkins says. "Folic acid in prescription-strength doses, for example, helps minimize many symptoms, as do other nutrients, such as boron, soy isoflavones and herbs such as agnus cactus and dong quai." Also, consume moderate amounts of soy products.

Dial Up A Dietician
If you're stuck on a weight-loss plateau, help is only a phone call away. The nutritionists at The Atkins Center are available for telephone consultations. To arrange a phone consultation, call (212) 758-2110.

Good morning Rhonda,

I just finished reading Corrie's posts regarding caffeine.

Day two for me, no caffeine... sigh... I'm very tired. But at least I don't have a headache yet.

I'll just keep thinking that giving up caffeine will help me get to my goal faster.

BTW I didn't have any tea either this morning, just ice water, well at least I'm getting my water in.

Enough about me... How is everyone else?

Tue, Aug-13-02, 07:54
No, not really, but yesterday I think I had a caffeine withdrawl headache. I took some tylenol and felt better by the time I got home. But I am exhausted. I fell asleep on the couch at about 8:15 last night.

Why don't you try the caffeine free diet cokes? I've been drinking sf sprite. Still has aspartame, but no caffeine. I only drink them occasionally. (I also use them to mix w/vodka if I want a drink.)

Thats a good idea...I will do that...I have read the clear sodas are better for you than the dark colored ones...dont really know why.

summer10
Tue, Aug-13-02, 08:23
I think it's because there is no caffeine in the clear ones.

sydneyalex

I never knew that..just assumed all sodas had caffeine.

Good morning!!!

WTG Summer! Keep it up - you can do it!
I have my cup of decaf with cream and a cup of water.
Take some tylenol before you get the headache!!! IT works!

Tanya - sorry about yours - what do you think it's from??

Rhonda - there is no caffeine in root beet either.

I was so tired of being at home that I took Maren and her stroller and put them into my Blazer - drovr down to the mall and just walked from one end to the other - I was looking for a pair of pants - no luck. But at least I got some exercise.

Oh by the way - I have lost another pound.....

That's great Corrie, congratulations!

At least you got some exercise at the mall. I've been buying clothes and now alot of them are too big so I'm trying to stay away from the malls.

I already took one tylenol. Hopefully I won't get a headache.

Hi Corrie, congrats on the pound, you are doing sooo good. I wish I loose just one. See my whoshie? Maybe she will help :). I don't know what the headache is from, I just get them all the time. I have a 9:30 meeting...TTL

Corrie

Yes - I saw your whooshie - she is beautiful!!
She will help!

Summer - It's funny....But I do the same thing - I saw this skirt I likes and they only had a 12 and a 14 left.....I was going to get the 12 and I stopped myself thinking "you idiot - you have got 12's on right now and you can barely keep them up - what are you doing?" So I put it back.

My mother in law really likes clothes - but she cannot get it in her head that I am no longer a size 22/2018/16/14 every thing she buys me I have to take back and exchange - EVERYTIME.

YEA CORRIE....WTG...ANOTHER POUND... :cheer:

I have not weighed so I dont know, I think I do better staying away from the scales ....I have gotten about 60 oz of water down already....

I was just wondering...all those weight loss things like Stacker 2 are loaded with caffeine....how does that make you lose weight.

summer10
Tue, Aug-13-02, 09:41
Wow, size 12, I can't wait until I'm there. I'm wearing 16/18s still.

I went thru a bunch of clothes over the weekend. I made a up a bag of stuff that it too big - to donate. I have stuff that I've worn once, some even still has tags on it. I have a "little" shopping problem.

That's nice that you MIL buys you things, but it would be nicer if they were the right size. But at least she is making an effort.

Rhonda - I have no idea about that stuff - have never used it. But I assume it works on the principal that it speeds things up and supresses appetite.

Good morning,

How's everyone doing today? Just got to work, it is brutally HOT and HUMID here, expecting 97 degrees today. I won't be going outside until it's time to go home. I don't mind the heat but this humidity is killing me.

Day three, no caffeine... I woke up with a headache, took some Tylenol and it's gone now. Hopefully this will be the last day with a headache. Although I still have the caffeine craving. I had a cappucino shake this morning, figured at least I could have the coffee flavor, it helped a little.
