Hey girls, how was your day. My went good. I found this cool thread called 'pets'. Everybody is posting pictures of their pets, I just love animals, especially dogs. I have 4 dogs, they are my kids. I posted some pictures of them, waht can I say, I am just a proud mom. Anyway, I thought I would share them with you as well.

Hi Corrie,
Love the picture...you have some young ones in there..I bet you have so much fun...how did you get into belly dancing?
Tanya,
Your dogs are adorable...very pretty. I am a cat lover more than dogs, they are just easier to take care of. But basically I love all animals too....
Summer,
How are you today, did you get that water down yesterday..time to start again...I only got about 70 oz down.
Thanks again for all your support to me..I feel alot better today.
He left no messages and didnt bother me last nite...Sure was quiet around the house...My 6 year old daughter has been with her day for the last two weeks...she comes home today and I really have missed her. She will be with me for a week and then next weekend back to her dad and they are going up to Tennessee on Vacation for 2 more weeks, after that..she will be home like she is suppose to. The break is nice but I sure do mis her. We are very close!

Good morning all!!!
Rhonda - I am glad you had a quiet night - you needed it. I cannot stand to have my kids away from me - am glad your daughter is coming home....
I have been a dancer since I was 4 years old - have taken every kind of lesson under the sun - have been bellydancing for more years than I can count - I adore it!!!
Tanya - WHOO HOO!! Congratulations on your lost pound!!! I havent een on the scales in days - perhaps this weekend.
Summer - way to go on the water. I drank a ton yesterday at work but forgot about it last night - and am really thirsty today - I mean parched!!!!
sydneyalex
Fri, Jun-21-02, 09:34
Corrie,
The belly dancing has got to burn alot of calories....4 years old is very young...I bet your really good...I just want this day over...dont want to be a work...most days I dont mind but today I just dont want to be here!

Fri, Jun-21-02, 09:39

I never want to be at work on Friday or Monday, the rest of the week is ok.
Corrie, do you think my loss has anything to do with diet cokes. I still haven't had one, and don't miss it as much. I do drink a LOT of water.
sydneyalex
Fri, Jun-21-02, 09:54
Tanya - thats great about the diet coke....I have had 2 or 3 since we made our plan to not have any.... :( BUT...the more water I drink the less I want the diet coke...(I never thought I would say that) ....I have gotten down 34 oz this morning...still a long way to go,
Rhonda
Tanyaskees
Fri, Jun-21-02, 10:16
Rhonda, you are doing great, keep it up. I never thought I could give up diet cokes, I am (or was) a diet coke junkie :(. Love the stuff, but I have to admit that every day I don't drink one, I miss it less and less.
Hey, have you guys ever tried Atkins bake mixes? I tried the blueberry muffin and bannana nut and they are very good :yum: Try them, it will give you some variety.
summer10
Fri, Jun-21-02, 11:00
Tanya,
I have never tried the muffin mixes, but I will. I could use some variety. All I ever have for breakfast is a hb egg or a shake. Congrats on your loss. I don't know about you, but every time I see a loss I feel sooooo much better.
Do you guys ever "cheat"? I have had some wine, but no food cheats. I'm going away in a few weeks and am thinking I may have a cheat then since I will be eating all of my meals out.
I'm up to 58 oz of water so far today.
Going to lunch soon so I will check in again later.
Summer

Fri, Jun-21-02, 11:11
Summer, oh yea, I have cheated plenty :(. That is why I am still so far from my goal. You just have to decide for yourself is it is worth it. I haven't cheated in 2 weeks and I feel great. I have no desire to cheat. I am going out to eat tonight with some friends to a chinese place and I have already planned what I am going to eat. Have fun on your trip and be careful, if you do cheat, make sure you are right back on induction.
Corrie
Fri, Jun-21-02, 11:28
You know me - I thing everything is because carbonation, caffeine & nutra sweet!!! - SEE??? Just a few days without one and off comes some weight!!! Think about the posibilities!!!
I have never tried the bake mixes - I don't want to - I think I just need to stay away from that stuff all together - if I get the mixes I'll get used to eating bread again and I dont miss it.
I never cheat - I have planned carb days and since mid march I have only had 1....and it doesn't really count as it wasn't carbs - it was vadka (na carbs) - just not good for the diet. My next planned day is at the beginning of july.
sydneyalex

Are the atkins bake mixes very expensive. Most of that stuff just costs so much.
Rhonda
Tanyaskees
Fri, Jun-21-02, 12:16
Not too bad. $4.99 at Kroger and $5.99 at GNC. But it has 18 servings in it. I usually eat 2 servings as one. Still if you think about it, 9 meals out of a box is pretty darn cheap.
I had 2 burger patties and some port rings. MMMMM
sydneyalex
Fri, Jun-21-02, 12:20

Fri, Jun-21-02, 13:03
I'm not planning a cheat - I'm just concerned that since I'll be eating all my meals out, it won't be as easy.
I'm not going away until the 2nd week of July. I hope I'll be down a few more pounds by then.
Corrie,
I'm in Boston.
Rhonda,
Do you count the carbs from the strawberries? I haven't had any fruit yet. Although I just bought some strawberries for my boyfriend. (He's thin - exercises alot)
I had chicken salad for lunch again today. I am so boring. And I walked to the Vitamin Shoppe (about 1/2 mile) and bought some of the new Atkins bars - they have cookies and cream, berry cheesecake and chocolate decadence. They improved the flavor of their bars. I haven't tried these flavors yet.
Corrie and Rhonda, have a good weekend

I have looked at the labels on the Atkins bars. They only have 2 grams of digestible carbs. I think they are ok once in a while and they're good when I am at my desk and starving!!! Plus they have the added benefit of satisfying my craving for something sweet.
I know you're gone 'til Monday - but I just thought I'd answer now.
I'll try to log on from work on Monday... (I don't want to think about the weekend being over!)

Good Morning Everyone,
Happy Monday to you! Hope everyone is well....I was a bad girl yesterday....I took my daughter to see Scooby Doo and she had this hugh bag of popcorn...guess who helped her eat it...so I am mad at myself for my lack of willpower.......but...back to eating LC
today.....Hopefully by the end of the week I will have dropped a couple of pounds.....Working on my water...did nt do well on that either over the weekend!!!!
Weekends are sure tough for me....so let me hear how great the rest of you did? I know you all probably lost 3-4 pounds... :)
Rhonda
Oh yeah, thats good news about the atkins bars..I like them too but have been afraid to buy any lately.
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 09:23
Hello all.
I use the bars when I need to as well. I don't have more than 1 per day - plus you need to drink lots of water with them. I didn't drink enough water over the weekend - In fact my weekend was pretty yucky. My hands are so full of retained water that they ache - I've already started drinking this morning but it is not working yet...
So as you can imagine I haven't lost an ounce all weekend. But no cheats -But I had a drink at my friends wedding sat night - hence my water problem I am sure. Oh well - It was worth it - we danced and danced and danced!!!
sydneyalex
Mon, Jun-24-02, 09:39
Corrie,
Sometimes you just gotta live a bit....I have gotten down about 40 oz of water so far and had 2 hb eggs....I am going to the bathroom like crazy.
Rhonda
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 09:40
Ya know - it just occured to me - as I was sitting here whining I forgot to tell you something really fun!!! I bought myself this great little dress a few months back - it is very 1940 ish - it's a halter dress that also ties between the breasts - black stretch cotton and covered with cherries and cherry blossoms!!! I was able to wear it to the wedding!!! I previously had never had it on before...I did my hair long and straight (It is to my waist) with a matching headband and red rhinestone cateye sunglasses...I had a blast! My husband told me he had forgotten how splendid I was!!! That made me happy!
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 09:43
Rhonda - all the talk about the atkins bars made me want something sweet - so I had one with a cup of decaf - I am working on my 2nd 24 ounce bottle of water as well....I am doing teh HB egg thing for lunch.....Don't sweat about the popcorn - you just needed some FIBER !!!!! Yeah yeah - that's it!
sydneyalex
Mon, Jun-24-02, 09:57
Yep the fiber thing thats it!!! Good thinking..
Sounds like you had a good time at that wedding...sounds like you looked really good! Must be nice to have a good husband to share your life with!

Hello,
My weekend was OK - no cheats and lots of water. But I weighed in the morning and no loss! I can't believe I haven't lost anything else. BUT I did do measurements yesterday and I lost 3 1/2 inches off my waist... So why isn't the scale moving???
Rhonda, I understand how you gave in to the popcorn, that is one of the things I am dying for.
Corrie, it sounds like you had a good weekend. Congrats on wearing the new dress.
Summer
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 10:12
Summer - don't worry - that will happen.
I do it all the time - scales - then inches - scales - then inches. What is really annoying me at the moment is that with my latest 10 pound loss in the last couple of weeks - i have only lost 1 inch off my waiste - and that is where I need it the most. Don't worry - the scales will catch up! And congrats on your loss!!!
sydneyalex
Mon, Jun-24-02, 10:13
Congrats to you Summer for not cheating :cheer:
I never took my measurements, suppose I need to do that...my scale dont move either...I think its stuck or something.
Isnt it frustrating when you put so much effort into something and nothin seems to be happening!!!
Rhonda

Thanks for the encouragement, I appreciate it. I was really mad when I didn't have a loss, but the inches made me feel a little better. I can feel the difference in my clothes.
I thought by this time I would be down at least 30 pounds. At the rate I am going it's going to take 2 yrs to get to my goal.
I did do alot of walking last week and plan to do so everyday this week too, maybe that will help.

It's FREEZING in here today. It's 80 out, so I didn't bring a jacket and now it's so cold in here I can't even function. I put in a call for the service people to come and do an adjustment - by the time they get here I'll be going home!
I am a little discouraged but at least I've lost something and I do feel alot better physically.

Mon, Jun-24-02, 10:57
Thats true..I do have alot more energy for some strange reason...even tho I still look big........I feel like doing more stuff.
I am not thinking about food as much as I used to.
Rhonda
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 11:01
I think that I just get discouraged by mondays in general.
I took the big step and threw my size 14 (2 pair) and size 18 (1 pair that ran small) away last night. My 12 are getting loose in the hips but not in the waiste.....(.i'll have to start working on that area specifically. ) I'll never need them again.
I thought that when we opened the pool in the back yard that I would swim and swim and swim - but they are keeping it too cold for me and I guess I'm just a whiner in my old age......I'll have to work on that too.
I hate working for a living - why can't I just be paid for my sparkling wit and charming personality??? I guess I wouldn't make much!!!
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 11:05
And just to top off my morning - my shoulders are peeling!
sydneyalex
Mon, Jun-24-02, 11:33
Corrie,
I will be glad if I can ever throw my size 12 and 13's away....I dont think that day will ever come.....I am very happy for you...you have come so far!
I wonder where Tanya is today....she must be busy!
Rhonda
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 11:59
Of course that day will come - don't be silly. But I know how you feel - If I could just lose another 20 pounds my clothing options in my closet would be so much better!!! The first time I did this I lost 40 pounds in 2 months - then I slowed to 5 pounds per month - that will NOT happen again if I can do anything to prevent it......
sydneyalex
Mon, Jun-24-02, 12:04
I wonder why mine is coming off so slow....I have cheated about 3 times tho...I suppose that could be part of the reason....and not enough exercise..plus I only started drinking the water a couple of weeks ago....I am hangin in there...Sure would like to see the scale move.......... :(
Poor Pitiful ME!

Mon, Jun-24-02, 12:17
Good for you!
First - look this over...Are you FOLLOWING all these rules???
The Rules of Induction
This phase of the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ must be followed precisely to achieve success. If you do it at all incorrectly you may prevent weight loss and end up saying, "Here is another weight-loss plan that didn't work." Also, check out "Extra Cautions," below.
Memorize the following rules as though your life depends upon it. In fact, it does.
Eat either three regular-size meals a day or four or five smaller meals. Do not skip meals or go more than six waking hours without eating.
Eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein in the form of poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs and red meat, as well as pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold-pressed).
Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three loosely packed cups of salad, or two cups of salad plus one cup of other vegetables (see Acceptable Foods).
Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.
Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.
Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When you're hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. When you're not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements.
Don't assume any food is low in carbohydrate—instead, read labels. Check the carb count (it's on every package) or use a carbohydrate gram counter.
Eat out as often as you wish but be on guard for hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings. Gravy is often made with flour or cornstarch, and sugar is sometimes an ingredient in salad dressing.
Avoid foods or drinks sweetened with aspartame. Instead, use sucralose or saccharin. Be sure to count each packet of any of these as 1 gram of carbs.
Avoid coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar.
Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat.
If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables.
Extra Cautions
Stay away from diet products unless they specifically state "no carbohydrates." Most such foods are for low-fat diets, not controlled carbohydrate plans.
The words sugarless, sugar-free or "no sugar added" are not sufficient. The label must state the carbohydrate content; that's what you must go by.
Many products you do not normally think of as foods, such as chewing gum, breath mints, cough syrups and cough drops, are filled with sugar or other caloric sweeteners. They must be avoided.
Be wary of prepared salads at salad bars or deli counters. For example, cole slaw or even tuna-fish salad may have been prepared with sugar.
Corrie
Mon, Jun-24-02, 12:18
Two Weeks Into Induction
Now it's time to review your results. Begin by asking yourself these seven questions.
After 14 days of following the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ you will be past any difficulties you faced during the transition and should be feeling slimmer and more energetic already. This is a logical time for you to decide whether you will continue with the program. Before you decide anything, let's review your results to date—and that doesn't just mean how many pounds you've lost. Ask yourself these questions:
Is my appetite under control?
Am I experiencing food cravings?
Am I constipated?
Do I have leg cramps?
Have I noticed a difference in my measurements?
Am I enjoying the food I'm eating?
Am I sleeping better? Do I have fewer aches and pains? Is my energy level more stable than before? Am I able to concentrate better?
Let's look at your answers:
If you were hungry, you weren't following the recommendation to eat as much as you needed to feel satisfied. Remember: If you have a tendency to become hungry between meals, pop a few olives, an ounce of cheese, a scoop of tuna salad, a slice of pot roast or a convenient controlled carbohydrate bar or shake.
If cravings continue, are you eating adequately and not skipping meals? Is there a hidden source of sugar in something you are eating? If none of the above applies, and you are just looking for a taste of something, consider a substitute product such as an Atkins™ Advantage Bar or something made with controlled carb bake mix.
A certain amount of constipation is not uncommon during the first week. As you progress to later phases, where you increase your carb consumption and thus your fiber intake, constipation should not be a problem. However, if necessary, try a tablespoon of wheat bran sprinkled on your salad. If you are sensitive to grain products, add ground flaxseed to a shake or psyllium husks to a glass of water instead. (None of these fibers contain the kind of carbohydrate that impacts on your blood-sugar levels.) Most important: Be absolutely sure to consume a minimum of eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
If you have leg cramps, it probably means you are losing too many electrolytes, which are full of minerals. Starting any weight-loss program has a diuretic effect, which is one of the reasons it is so important to stay hydrated. Supplement with potassium, magnesium and calcium in addition to your multivitamin, and the cramps should disappear.
If you measured your chest, waist, hips, upper arms and thighs with a tape measure before beginning to do Atkins, you should see a loss of inches, which sometimes occurs when weight loss is only marginal. Also, your weight can fluctuate from day to day, even from hour to hour, depending upon fluid balance, hormonal cycles and the effects of medications, to name a few things. And vigorous exercise can actually cause some weight gain because it increases muscle mass, which is denser than the fat it displaces. Even if these various factors cause you to lose pounds more slowly than you want, your tape measure will reveal that you are slimming down all over. But, as with the scale, don't become obsessed with the tape measure. You'll know the inches are disappearing because of the way your clothes fit.
Fortunately, most people enjoy protein food. If you are a strict vegetarian, you really can't do Induction. (The three later phases could be managed, but the food selections are limited on a regimen that restricts carbohydrates and simultaneously excludes animal foods.) In general, a person who will not eat any animal foods will not do Atkins permanently; they usually find it too boring. But if you are willing to eat fish and chicken, plus eggs and cheese, you can certainly do Atkins without eating red meat. The rest of you can enjoy a delicious and satisfying way of eating. That is not to say that many people don't miss pasta and bread, as well as fruit and juice, during the first two weeks. Soon enough in the later phases you will be able to add back fruit and even special controlled carb baked goods.
Feeling good? Now is the time to retake the Blood-Sugar Symptom Questionnaire. If you have experienced improvements in some of these areas, this exercise will help motivate you to continue to do Atkins. If you've been overweight for a long time, you will almost certainly have suffered some of the symptoms in this test. No doubt you thought them a normal part of aging. Isn't it wonderful to see that you can make them go away simply by changing the way you eat? You'll find that doing Atkins cleans out a lot of metabolic garbage from your life. Most people continue the program not only because they're losing weight, but also because they feel so good. For many of you, especially if you're over 40, the most significant revelation of controlled carbohydrate eating is the discovery that some nagging physical ills, from headaches to various aches and pains, have completely vanished.

What Is Your Degree of Metabolic Resistance?
Once you know how readily you lose excess weight, you can plot your strategy on how to take it all off.
Now that you've enjoyed some success following the Atkins Nutritional Approach™, let's talk about sustaining that weight loss. You undoubtedly know exactly how much weight you lost during the first 14 days of Induction. That number will help give you a general understanding of your personal degree of metabolic resistance. As you can see on the metabolic resistance table below, a woman who has 40 pounds to lose and sheds three pounds in two weeks during Induction has a high degree of metabolic resistance as compared to a woman with similar weight-loss goals who drops eight pounds. (For a complete discussion of metabolic resistance, see The Role of Insulin in Metabolic Resistance.)

As you've undoubtedly guessed, the degree of resistance to weight loss that your body shows corresponds to your degree of difficulty in getting well into lipolysis. By definition, resistance to weight loss is resistance to lipolysis.
During Induction you were consuming about 20 grams of carbs per day. The carbohydrate level was extremely low to demonstrate that it's possible for virtually everybody to experience lipolysis—from the person who can lose weight quite easily on almost any program to the hardest case, the person who, until doing Atkins, thought that losing weight was almost impossible.
Almost all of you found that you were losing weight. Those who didn't should see The Fat Fast for information on the special weight-loss plan Dr. Atkins has devised for people with extreme metabolic resistance. Many of you, however, are now looking forward to liberalizing your menu. But before you automatically move from Induction to Ongoing Weight Loss, click here to read Are You Ready to Move Beyond Induction?.

The Fat Fast
Counterintuitive as it may sound, if you can't budge the scale on Induction, a few days on this regimen may well allow you to break through metabolic resistance.
Certain individuals are so metabolically resistant that only more intense dietary restrictions prove successful. Once medications, thyroid problems and candida are brought under control, almost all overweight people who diligently adhere to the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ will lose and keep off weight. But for the small group of people for whom it does not work, more extreme measures are necessary.
To help these metabolically resistant people, Dr. Atkins has modified what he calls "the most effective weight-loss eating pattern ever described." British researchers Alan Kekwick and Gaston Pawan developed it, and Frederick Benoit and his team confirmed its superiority in burning off fat, compared to an absolute total fast. This extreme diet consists of 1,000 calories daily, comprised of 90 percent fat. No other weight-loss regimen has matched its ability to burn off stored fat. Dr. Atkins modified the Kekwick diet to make it as enjoyable as possible and dubbed it the "Fat Fast." He tried it on scores of patients and found it often worked for those who were unable to lose weight in any other safe, drug-free way.
The Kekwick diet forces the body into lipolysis so it burns its stores of fat. Lipolysis cannot take place if there is a significant source of glucose. Since all carbohydrates and some protein convert to energy by way of glucose, eliminating almost everything but fat from the diet forces even the most resistant body into lipolysis. That explains the 90 percent dietary-fat component. Lowering the caloric intake accelerates the need to burn up body fat—thus the 1,000-calorie limit.
The Fat Fast is one controlled carb program where you do have to count calories. You'll eat 1,000 calories a day, with 75 percent to 90 percent comprised of fat. Frequent feedings prevent hunger better than three meals a day, so you consume five feedings, perhaps one every four hours, comprising 200 calories each. Because of the high fat content and frequent feedings, very few people experience much hunger. The stumbling block for some people is the absence of conventional meals. But most are willing to stick with it for a few days, even if the food selections are unfulfilling.
Caution: The Fat Fast is actually dangerous for anyone who is not metabolically resistant. For people who lose weight fairly easily, the rate of weight loss is too rapid to be safe. But it carries very little risk for people who can barely lose on any other regimen.
Step One: Eat Mostly Fat
Begin with five 200-calorie feedings per day and follow for four or five days. Each item equals approximately 200 calories:
one ounce of macadamia nuts or macadamia nut butter
two ounces of cream cheese or Brie
one ounce of tuna or chicken salad with two teaspoons of mayonnaise served in one-quarter of an avocado
two deviled eggs made with two teaspoons of mayonnaise
two ounces of sour cream and two tablespoons black or red caviar
two and a half ounces whipped heavy cream topped with sucralose zero-calorie syrup
two ounces of pâté (check label for fat content)
two egg yolks (hard-boiled) with one tablespoon of mayonnaise
Step Two: Modify the Fat Fast
If increasing the fat-to-carbohydrate ratio and cutting calories work, any dietary change in that direction might get the job done. Next, you can try four meals a day of roughly 300 calories for a total of 1,200 calories. That should work, too, and what it allows is definitely more appealing to the taste buds:
two ounces of beef chuck (do not drain fat) cooked in two tablespoons of olive oil
two scrambled eggs with two strips of nitrate-free bacon
two tablespoons of full-fat sour cream with a tablespoon of sugar-free syrup
one-quarter cup chicken or tuna salad made with two tablespoons of mayonnaise
three ounces of pâté (check label for fat content)
one-and-a-half ounces of macadamia nuts
Step Three: Return to Induction
Try the 1,200-calorie regimen for a week, then go back to Induction. Or simply follow the concept of increasing the ratio of fat to protein. No one should have to feel that losing weight is hopeless. Sometimes the key to achieving your goal weight permanently is quite difficult to adhere to, but rarely is it simply impossible.

Tanya,
Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hope the medication helps.
Corrie,
How do you have time to do all of that posting while at work?
Rhonda,
If you're looking to add more fat,, maybe try an ounce of macadamia nuts. I felt like that helped me.
I tried the fat fast for a day an a half - but I didn't like it. I don't mind doing Atkins and I decided I would wait out a loss following induction rather than doing the fat fast and being miserable.

Hello everyone,
I've been doing work, so I haven't logged on until now.
Corrie,
What about pysillium husks (not sure if that's how you spell it). Dr. Atkins reccommends those in his book. I think you take a tblsp mixed in a glass of water. They sell them at the drug store near the laxatives, but it is all natural.
I'm really behind on my water today. Although I got some extra exercise this morning when I walked to the bus stop and realized when I got there that I had my boyfriend's keys and I had to go back home to get the right set of keys. I missed the bus and had to take a later one. But at least I got an extra walk in.
I've been walking every night before dinner too, but still no loss. I have to stay away from the scale.
I'll try to check in again later.

Can you or Corrie or Summer explain that to me.
They are really really good....dont taste lo-carb!

Rhonda - when you are LCing - you only have to count the carbs that affect your blood sugar....For instance take a salad. It may have a grand total of 4 carbs, but you don't count the fiber (say its 2 carbs)as it is not digestable and does not affect you blood sugar so you can just subtract it - so your total carbs is 2. let me see what else I can find.....

Fiber: A Special Kind of Carbohydrate
Adequate dietary fiber is essential for regularity. But fiber also performs an important role in helping moderate swings in blood sugar levels.
Perhaps your grandmother called it roughage; physicians call it bulk. No matter what it’s called, dietary fiber is traditionally used for relieving constipation, an important consideration when changing the way you eat as you do when you start the Atkins Nutritional Approach™. What exactly is fiber? Simply put, dietary fiber is the indigestible parts of plant cells. Although it is a carbohydrate, fiber does not convert to glucose and thus does not raise your blood-sugar level the way carbohydrates typically do.
In fact, fiber actually slows the entry of glucose into the bloodstream. This, in turn, reduces the blood-sugar spikes that cause insulin production and encourage the body to produce and store body fat. And by slowing down food’s transit time in the digestive tract, fiber helps you feel full longer, resulting in fewer food cravings.
But that’s just the beginning. Fiber also:
binds to cholesterol in the intestine, helping rid the body of it.
absorbs and then eliminates bacterial toxins in the intestine.
reduces the likelihood of getting diverticulitis.
speeds the excretion of gallstone-promoting bile.
supports the immune system by crowding out harmful bacteria in the colon.
bulks up the stool and make it easier to pass.
Fiber-rich foods include vegetables, nuts and seeds, fruit, beans and whole unrefined grains. During Induction your primary source of fiber will be vegetables. (In later phases you will be introducing the other sources of fiber in the aforementioned order.) How can you get the benefits of fiber without the carbs contained in these foods? The answer is supplementation, such as a tablespoon or two of psyllium husks daily. Be sure to select a sugar-free product. You can also use coarse wheat bran or flaxseed meal. Although it’s derived from grain, coarse bran is pure fiber so it doesn’t add to your carb count. Psyllium husks should be mixed with water, or you can sprinkle bran over your vegetables or blend flaxseed meal into a shake. Drinking the recommended eight glasses or more of water daily is also essential to avoid constipation. Also remember that you need to accompany any increase in fiber intake with plenty of water.
Be aware that fiber is one place where less is more. Consuming too much can block mineral absorption because food simply doesn’t stay in the digestive tract long enough for your body to extract valuable nutrients. Gas, flatulence or constipation can also result. If you haven’t been eating significant amounts of fiber, increase your intake gradually to allow the intestinal tract to adjust.

Corrie, what are we all here for? To support each other...right? Right. So whine away, I am here to listen. And don't beat yourself about 1 pound, it's probably just water.
Rhonda, about the carbs, they call then effective carbs, the ones that effect your blood sugar. All other carbs you can disgard acording to Atkins.

Here I am. I've been working. Going on vaca in 2nd wk of July and I have to get some stuff done.
Sorry about the pound Corrie, I'm sure it's just water. You have been doing so well, I'm sure it will come right off.
Rhonda, I like the cinnamon bars too.
Hey Tanya, how's your hip?
I have a question - I noticed since I've been eating the Atkins bars I am not in ketosis like I was before. I was always "large", now I am in small or trace. Does this mean I am not burning fat? I think I need to stop eating the bars and see if I go back up. Although even when I was in large I wasn't really losing.
I am happy today because I have a pair of pants on that previously didn't fit and today they are loose. So even though the scale is not moving, something is going on.
I am off to lunch and will check in again later. Have a good afternoon.

Hey Summer, good to see you. I keep reading that if you register at all on the ketostix, you are loosing, it doesn't matter how large. I register moderate to large in the afternoons and don't register at all in the mornings, so who knows, those stupid stix have a mind of their own. Rhonda, you need to weigh, you have probably dropped. How long has it beensince you weighed last. And measure too.
sydneyalex
Wed, Jun-26-02, 12:11
Tanya,
First of all I never did measure...I should go ahead and do that..I weighed Monday and was the same but remember I ate all that popcorn at the theatre on Sunday...I know that had to hurt me...so I have not weighed...havent measured the ketostix either.
Guess I better invest in a measuring tape....probably all the water I am drinking...been drinking alot.

I don't measure either, too lazy. But I do weigh daily just to make sure I am not going up. I am not in any hurry to loose, so it does not bother me much not to see a loss, I have hte rest of my life to loose this weight. Guess what I am munching on now? De-lite....yammmm.

Good morning.
I still feel like hell - I had no sleep last night. I am back down to where I was tho - so that's a little better. My other problem is still not totally fixed. Perhaps it is viral. Oh well - I am sure it will pass. (no pun intended).
My office is so HOT today - I just want to go home and stretch out on my cool sheets.
I have lost a total of 23 inches since I started - so that's pretty cool.......

Tanya - yeah - nevermind - it is just water and will come off in a day or two (so I keep telling myself). My fingers aren't quite as bad today...so that's something.
When I get whiney I just think about how I looked 40 pounds ago and that pretty much shuts me up.
It was so hot here yesterday that I got in the pool straight after work and did not get out until the sun was well on it's way down. Swamp coolers just don't cut it in this kind of heat...... :daze:  :spin:

Last night I was reading some posts on the "Stalls" board and several people said they had losses after they "cheated" a little. What do you guys think about that? (Rhonda did have a loss after she ate the popcorn last weekend, so maybe there is something to that.) I haven't had any "cheats" and I am loosing so slowly!
I thought the exercise would get the scale moving. I know when I go on vacation I will probably have a small cheat, so we will see then. Even if I don't have a food cheat, I will definetly be having some alchohol, (don't know if that would have the same result).

Alcohol doesn't help me at all. I have had cocktails 2 times since I started in March....It stops me completely for about 1 week....I retain water and feel like crap for days (probably what has been wrong with me this week) Make sure that if you have spirits (vodka, whiskey etc) that you mix it with diet something or other or water. If you have a beer - Miller lite has the lowerst carb content at 3.5 per can.
I have done my homework...lol.
