Who are the disease-mongers?
They are Twits like: Stev Lenon, Jay Tanzman, Mark Doran and
Steve Harris who are among the biggest promoters of
inappropriate medicalisation on these ngs.
The latest hot issue in medicine was recently published in a
special edition of the British Medical Journal at:
http://bmj.com/content/vol324/issue7342/
In its leading comment, the BMJ argued that there was almost
certainly too much medicine and doctors should encourage
people to look after themselves. http://bmj.com/cgi/content/f-
ull/324/7342/859?view=full&pmid=11950716 "The cost of trying
to defeat death, pain and sickness is unlimited and, beyond a
certain point, every penny spent may make the problem worse,
eroding still further the human capacity to cope with
reality," it thundered. Moynihan R, Smith R. Too much
medicine? BMJ. 2002 Apr 13;324(7342):859-60. PMID: 11950716
The question raised is "Are better off with less medicine, not
more?" People, who would previously learn to deal with common
problems themselves now are bullied into turning to their
doctors for help by the disease-mongers.
With inappropriate medicalisation alternative approaches -
emphasising the self-limiting or relatively benign natural
history of a problem, or the importance of personal coping
strategies - are played down or ignored. Death, pain and
sickness are just part of being human. Human cultures have
developed the means to help people cope with all three. Modern
medicine with inappropriate medicalisation is attempting to
destroyed these practices.
The BMJ undertook a poll among British doctors to decide the
top 'non-diseases' that are defined as medical conditions but
that doctors feel shouldn't be. http://bmj.com/cgi/content/fu-
ll/324/7342/883?lookupType=volpage&vol=324&fp=883&view=short
In search of "non-disease"
In first place came 'ageing', followed by work, boredom and
bags under the eyes. The list of bugbears continued through
baldness and freckles, ugliness, jet lag, gap teeth, smoking,
shortness, nail-biting, bad breath, allergies, shyness,
insomnia, hairiness and even diabetes.
This medicalisation of non-diseases by the disease-mongers has
gone too far and is harming society, preventing us from
accepting our humanity. It encourages us to see ourselves as
victims in search of a cure, perpetually suffering from one
ailment or another.
The disease-mongers have gnawed away at the public's
self-confidence to cope with the natural problems of life
without medical intervention.

Gee, John, please use your massive cut and paste skills to
find an example of me suggesting a medication to anyone on
this usegroup. And then please do the same to document men
suggesting anyone purchase a disease from me or the others
you mention.
Your poor grasp of the language betrays you whenever you try
to use it. You might wish to invest in a dictionary but given
your disdain for language skills and arts, it is doubtful it
would improve your posts or your understanding.
Where did you obtain your GED?
BTW, I'm still waiting to be run off this NG, the one I didn't
subscribe to until you promised to run me from it. Apparently
this is another statement you've made that you can't back up.

junk, but here goes..
John, that "article" is a philosophical editorial written by 2
journalists. It does not reflect the opinion of the BMJ. The
article referred to "medicine" as a discipline -- not
"medications." As always, it pays not only to *read* but to
*think* about what you're reading as well.

As a disease-monger, Stev never lets reality get in the way of
his reflexive biases against the de-medicalisation of the
natural conditions of humanity.

Gohde, you are an idiot far beyond any that I've ever seen -
and I've been around. I have never promoted 'medicalisation'
of any kind, appropriate or not; in fact I don't dispense
nutritional advice *at all* - for the simple reason that I'm
not qualified in this area. I read this n/g because I want to
know more about a difficult and important topic - which means
attending to people who are qualified or/and who quote real
studies with some degree of insight and accuracy. You aren't
in that category, Gohde - and from what I see of your
drivelling loony posts, you don't have either the brains or
the sanity to make the slightest contribution. Yes, it's true:
you really are as useless as you secretly fear you are. So go
kill yourself.

Why don't you practice what you just have preached?
My dear boy, the 13 April 2002 (Volume 324, Issue 7342)
http://bmj.com/content/vol324/issue7342/#TWIB edition of the
BMJ is dedicated to the subject of medicalisation.
This issue of BMJ, in fact, contains several dozen closely
related articles on the subject of disease-mongering and
medicalisation. I would hardly call that nothing! Who cares if
the articles don't reflect the opinion of the BMJ. It was
obviously the opinion of BMJ to publish this issue of BMJ, and
all the medicalisation articles therein.
Your reply, is what I would call junk!
Why don't you try thinking for a change?

Just remember that: Stev Lenon, Jay Tanzman, Mark Doran and
Steve Harris got in my face first. :-)
I am just returning the favor to them. So, I particularly want
them to see these comments of mine.
What these articles illustrate is that other responsible third
parties have been thinking along the same lines, that I have,
for quite a few years. A search of Medline will reveal that
quite a few publications besides BMJ have published similar
articles. And, of course, there have been books written on the
subject too.
These dudes are the fossils. I represent the wave of the
future. And, these dudes just can not deal with it. They want
to live with their heads stuck in the sand.
I repeat, I have singled these dudes out because they
routinely go out of their way to get in my face. :-)

You don't have to wonder much. It just means they want
attention, any kind of attention, like small children. In
adults this is generally a sign of anxiety/insecurity or

From now on, I will be openly promoting the

Thanks again, ... Stev!

who might be willing to listen to you in exchange for a little
grape juice, overly loud gospel music and a chance to sit down
in a chair for an hour or so. Then go join Tommy and wait for
your turn in the EST room.
After all those tries you got the screen name correct. Are
there truly 514 voices in your deranged little head, or did
you just lose count?
How I had hoped it was the anti-watchman.

Stev must have you rattled - the words you're searching for
are:
embarrassed
credentials
flaunting
de-professionalisation - is that a word? Isn't that the same
as amateurization, if indeed that is a word?
If one is going to "fluant" their "crediantals" the least they
can do is spell the words correctly - sort of makes you a tad
more believable? Gee whiz John, don't you have a spell checker
on your news reader? Mine picked up both "fluant" and
"crediantals."
You're promoting making primary health care an amateur
undertaking? When we're sick, our front line contacts will be
amateurs like you instead of family practice physicians or
internists?
So this is health care in the 21st century? Tsk, tsk.....

One of John Gohde's dysfunctional alter identities blathers
while waiting for much needed psychiatric care:

Not only do you not have these promised credentials, you can't
spell the word correctly either. You should really incorporate
a spell check program into your tirades.
Of course, if you are unable to use such a program, I will be
happy to pre-edit your posts and return them to you with
necessary corrections. We wouldn't want you to be "embrassed"
or embarrassed.
Here's a tip, little impotent one, next time you get reborn,
ask for a brain that can handle the English language and
interpret scientific data correctly. As for a personality that
doesn't require multiple identities to hide behind, and ask
for one that finishs school.

Sorry...was feeling a bit mischievious and I and apparently
everyone else has found John's tirades and dirty tricks
extremely annoying. Let's stick to the real purpose of these
ng's. Argument really serves no purpose to uncovering any

It's a filthy job, but someone has to do it. You make it so
incredibly easy.
I repeat, get a dictionary and use it. Your posts make little
more sense than Tom Hennessy's. I sometimes wonder if you two
aren't related.

John, you'd better get checked out by a mental health
center. You're threatening to go to war with yourself. You
are apparently having trouble keeping your numerous screen
names straight.
And it's "shameful" not "shamful". You really should let us
edit your tirades before you post them.
As for "screwing everybody over" only those who take your
advice need worry.
