Are there any known risks for taking shark liver oil such as
mercury content or other reasons?

Maybe ciguatera poisoning if the sharks are from
tropical waters.
Cigua toxin is a potent marine toxin carried by some large
tropical fish. It tends to concentrate in the liver being fat
soluble, but is also in the flesh. It's origin appears to be a
dinoflagellate.

I think ciguatera poisoning can be a hazard with some
shellfish too? I met one person who got ciguatera poisoning in
1998 from prawns, apparently just one was contaminated.
Doctors were floored at first, though I certainly heard of
ciguatera poisoning, as well as paralytic shellfish poisoning,
well before 1998.
