A friend of mine tells me that taking vitamins every day is
bad for you. He says that they should be cycled, with 30 days
on 30 days off. Does anyone know if this is true? I don't eat
much veg but have been taking a multi-vitamin (Centrum) for
years thinking that I was doing myself good rather than harm!
Any advice would be welcome.

Vitamins and minerals come in with food. Do you have to cycle
food? 30 days with food coming in and 30 days with no food
coming in?
With a multi like Centrum, all you are doing is making sure
that decent amounts of vitamins and minerals come in each day
regardless of how deficienct your meals are in terms of a
specific vitamin or mineral.
For the very high dose multi's, you really don't need to take
them every day but if that's the way you want to take them,
no harm, no foul (assuming that they do not provide
potentially toxic amounts of a vitamin or a mineral in the
suggested daily dose).
If you are taking something that the body already synthesizes,
cycling may be useful if you are trying to use a high dose
supplement. Marty B "You are what you eat"

If you are male, you probably ought to consider giving blood
to reduce your iron burden after taking all that supplimental
iron in Centrum.

For someone taking Centrum I might be inclined to agree, do
to the iron. Same reason to avoid Total cereal. Try Centrum
Silver instead. Or a multi that is actually well designed and
not just marketing hype. One with more vitamin e and
selenium, perhaps.

Snobs be gone!
Once upon a time, our fellow Badbark rambled on about "Can
steady vitamin usage be bad for you?." Our champion being
bored in sci.med.nutrition retorts, thusly ...

That advice is generally applied to Herbs ONLY.
I am not saying that the advice is correct. It is simply how
some people take herbal supplements.
