I am very interested in knowing the effects of Lipitor and
the possible role it may play in Autoimmunity. A friend has
been dignosed with an autoimmune disease after a
misdiagnosis resulting in Lipitor treatment. He was put on
Lipitor after having his lipid count taken in a nonfasted
state. This, in turn, gave false results and may have,
ultimately, caused the autoimmunity. Any input on the issue
is much appreciated. J Conley

Not enough detail to comment about the situation as there are
many types of autoimmune diseases. Which one was he diagnosed
with? Drug induced lupus is a possibility with some meds such
as procainamide and these are usually diagnosed with the
presence of an antihistone antibody test. Once the drug is
removed the condition can be corrected.

Once upon a time, our fellow J Conley rambled on about
"Lipitor and Autoimmunity." Our champion being bored in
sci.med.nutrition retorts, thusly ...

Another post from a friend!!!
We do *not* need to talk to you. We need to talk to your
friend, directly.

Lipitor is a statin drug (HMG-CoA Reductase inhibitor) which
inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
I'm not aware of statin use being linked to autoimmune
disease. You could do a medline serach (www.nlm.nih.gov) using
statins *and* autoimmune disease.
An abnormally low serum cholesterol has been linked to a
number of conditions in humans and autoimmune disease may be
one of them but my understanding is that the low cholesterol
is a symptom, not a cause of the condition (cancer is a good
example where most terminal cancer patients will have
abnormally low serum cholesterol levels).

Are you trying to build a case for malpractice against the
doctor involved? Can you prove without a shadow of a doubt
that the Lipitor caused an autoimmune disease? How many expert
witnesses can you afford to hire? I personally have never
heard of this connection. Which autoimmune disease are you
referring to? There are many. Which lipid count? Cholesterol?
Triglyceride? Cholesterol can be measured in a nonfasting
state. It doesn't matter if you're fasting for a cholesterol
level. Sounds like you're trying to set up a case to me, and
you're using internet evidence to do it.
I would suggest to anyone that wants to contribute to this
thread that anything posted could be used in a court of law.
Sounds like you're grasping at straws at reasons for your
"friend's" illness, which is probably you. If it truly is a
friend, there are probably aspects to this case that you are
not privy to; that either the friend hasn't told you, or that
is beyone your medical expertise. I smell a lawsuit waiting
to happen.
