I found it interesting that the authors of that article didn't quote one single scientific or medical study to back up what they were saying. I just have to address a few totally inaccurate things in here, though.
First:
"However, the majority of weight loss comes from loss of water and muscle tissue, not fat which is what you need to lose to keep the weight off."
Now, tell me...how does a diet with adequate amounts of protein cause your body to consume it's own muscle mass? They must have been thinking of those high carb, low protein diets when they said this. The body will only turn to it's own muscle when dietary protein and fat is lacking, not when it is abundant. Loss of water? I know that our bodies are composed of a high amount of water, but there has yet to be a person who could loose 100 lbs. of just water and still live. On ANY diet, only the weight lost in the first few days is water weight, after that it's fat or protein being lost and we've already established that with adequate dietary protein, your body will not start consuming it's own muscle so guess what you're losing? FAT!
Second:
"You can only get many essential nutrients from fruit, vegetables and grains - low carb diets only allow very small amounts of fruit and veg - definitely not enough to give you your recommended daily allowance."
Grains are NOT necessary for good health. Any substance found in grains can also be found in vegetables. Same goes for fruit. I don't know what they have been reading, but only on induction are your veggies limited below the RDA (and you will note that Atkins recommends vitamin supplements during this phase strongly). Maybe they think we stay on induction forever? In ongoing weight loss we are encouraged to add more veggies (and even some fruit) in and most of us are getting their RDA of veggies if they are following the diet properly.
Third:
"There are also concerns that these diets, if followed long-term, may increase the risk of kidney, bone and liver problems."
Concerns, perhaps, but again, no scientific studies are quoted to support this statement and none have been done that support it in the least. I have been doing Atkins for a year with no kidney, liver or bone problems at all (and my doctor DOES test for them).
All this article represents is popular opinion, not scientific or medical fact.

I didn't even bother to read the article, but I'll bet $100 they never mentioned all the ailments that are CURED with low-carbing such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, PMS, hypoglycemia, etc. I'm convinced that a diet that makes me feel better than I've felt in my 43 years CAN'T be bad for me!! Period.

Just as Lisa said, the article has no single reference to any medical, biochemical, or any scientific study to prove anything they said, so it's just one unknown guy or gal's opinion based on what they heard from someone else, who thought ........ etc.
Most of the arguments (losing muscle) applies to low-calorie, low-fat and low-protein. Low-carb is the exact opposite.

I can't believe that they had the nerve to print that! Almost everything they said was wrong. They need to do some research. I think they are just trying to sell their products to uneducated dieters who are desparate.
I wanted to e-mail them and let them know what I thought, but the only e-mail address I saw was to get more info, so I don't think anyone reads them--just puts them on a list to recieve their propaganda!
WE KNOW THE TRUTH, and the truth will win in the end!

I did LC for 6 months in the 1970's (wish I'd stayed with it then) and I've been on LC for 3.5 YEARS since Oct. 1998 and recent tests came back normal.
