I was watching Oprah Winfrey yesterday and she had a doctor on there -- Dr. Christine Northrup who wrote a book, The Wisdom of Menopause.

She said it is not uncommon for women to begin to experience symptoms as early as their 30's and that symptoms can persist for 5-13 years.

One of the things she mentioned was the rise in insullin and gaining weight along with a host of other symptoms women experience -- cold hands, feet, night sweets, weight gain in middle, migraines to name a few.

I found the book at amazon.com for about $16 and thought it might be something women could find helpful no matter what age -- because one day we will face it whether we want to or not.

I haven't gotten my book yet, but was so impressed with Dr. Northrup and just wanted to pass this along. I've recommended it to my 28 year old daughter who is obese, has night sweats and has horrible migraines. She talks about nutritional things along with something like a 2% progesterone cream to help balance out your hormones.

If anyone has the book, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

She also had an exerpt from Kathy Smith who has also written a book, Moving through Menopause. Kathy Smith is now 50 years old and said she was in denial for some time about it -- I know when I think of menopause I cringe.

I thought it was GREAT yesterday that she said that there is an epidemic of obesity in the US and women should be avoiding "white" foods (ie. white bread, potatoes etc) since they are converted to sugar. Basically she was recommending low carbohydrate eating (she also said she wasn't advocating never eating them again, just cutting way back, especially in "premenopause").

It was very interesting....

Kinda off topic but did you see the one I believe last week when she had the guy, Andrew Weil, author of Healthy Cooking Book? Oprah asked him, "Should I be on a low carb diet?" He told her YES! I was drinking my water and choked on it when he said that. :D

I've had in my library for over 2 years now, a wonderful book that I read by Dr Northrup, "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" (Bantam, 1998). I saw her on PBS during one of the telethons a few years ago and found her to be a wealth of knowledge. Her book offers so much info I read it twice, bought my mother a copy, she gave a copy to her friend... it's been a hit.

She offers page after page on nutrition for women. And yes, she does specifically say get rid of the "white" foods in the diet.

Of course, I didn't completely listen, but I did get rid of 50% of my "white" foods. But I didn't up the veggies til I converted to Atkins.

It's available in paperback and it's well worth every penny. She has her own web site at http://www.drnorthrup.com/index.php

She's great!!!

The freedom is wonderful!

I did suffer from the night sweats, but the HRT cured that. As for the weight gain around the middle--I'm working on that. The other thing is the mood swings but the pills also cured that. My kids used to say "Mom, did you forget to take your pill" when I was yelling at them about something.

I don't miss TOM at all! He just left town with all his little supplies and I am happy to have the extra space in the bathroom closet for all the extra TP I need now! :D

Just telling it like it is.

Getting old isn't fun, but no more TOM is just one of the perks, along with the senior discounts. :D

I was just browsing through the forums looking for info on menopause and landed here. Perfect!

I just turned 50 and a friend gave me The Wisdom of Menopause (as a joke, sort of) for a gift. However, she added that it helped her immensely and it stays by her bedside as a reference manual.

Well, that book is changing my life, or, rather... really helping me through the change. I think that woman must have followed me around all of my life because what she is writing is unbelievably hitting the right targets. I want to take a highlighter and mark the thing up. SO many words of wisdom for sure.

I'm only on chapter 6 right now, so, haven't got to her eating plan yet, however, she does advocate low carb - no white foods. Also, herbal remedies to help symptoms.

Will stay tuned....
