It is amazing the amount of ppl with thyroid disease. I have to have surgery May 10.
My thyroid keeps growing and is effecting my throat. I have a hard time swallowing and breathing.
I have some nodules on the right side too. I had a biopsy done on a COLD nodue and it was neg.
They will take the right side and half of the left.
I am reading that alot of ppl were out of work for 3 weeks. My dr. did not give me any indications that it would be that long.
He has not told me what meds. I will be on yet, but he said that there were no side effect especially weight gain. He said that it should help me lose some weight.
Any re-assuarance would be nice if anybody has had this dine.
I am NOT hypo or hyper it just is growing and they need to remove it.

Most ppl are out of work for 2-3 weeks..I guess it also depends on the person and what type of job they're doing. I would say atleast a week out though. I stayed out for 3 weeks because I had 2 jobs that were very strenous so that wasn't even enough time for me.

Theres always atleast minimial side effects untill they find the levels you need and the right medication..For me, I was put on a medication that made me GAIN weight..I gained 10lbs and I was always freezing, then they switched my med to synthroid. Now I can eat as much as I want and not gain, (sounds great dosen't it? lol) BUT I can't lose for nothing so it sucks..No other side effects though.

Sorry ..but um you can eaven ask anyone, there is no way that after they take it out and put you on medication that its "easier" All doctors say that same bs for some reason. Its the total opposite..It's HARDER. I'm not sure about the exact reason why, I know it has something to do with your metabolism..maybe someone else on here can clear that part up....?

I wasn't hypo or hyper either, but after they take it out your considered hypo.

I had an overactive thyroid gland. The nodule kept fluctuating but never affected my breathing or swallowing.

After some years of trying to control it with drugs they decided it would be best to operate. I used to be hot always, eat lots and never put on an ounce.

Operations can take a bigger toll than you expect. It was a good 6-8 months after the operation that they could say with some certainty that thyroid function had gone the other way. I put on a lot of weight very quickly.

I am not trying to scare you - if surgery is necessary then you need to have it. I would ask that you are extra vigillant about how you feel afterward. Busy stressed nurses and doctors can sometimes dismiss complaints of "feeling cold".

Take extra care.

Very very best of luck with your surgery - I had half of my thyroid taken out in Jan -had tumor - the remaining half of my throid has hashimotos disease - I was put on throid meds right after surger - and had them incresed once - will have levels recheceked in about 2 weeks - I am sure that I will need more meds - still having hypo symtoms - gained 15 pounds after surgery -started adkins in desparation - havnt lost any weight but havnt gained - as far as the surgery goes - i think it is different for everyone -i have had two c-secs a hernia repair and appy -the thyroid removal was by far the worst for me - I did go back to college 5 days latter - but wasnt feeling well at all -the worst at this point is dealing with the hypo symptoms.

I assume that a surgeon is removing your thyroid? Do you have plans to see an endocrinologist after?

Let me know if I can help.

Best of luck
