I've been reading where Dr. Eades suggests taking Iodoral iodine supplements, as being low in iodine could be a cause of hypothyroidism. I ordered some Iodoral online, and for the past few days have taken one tablet each morning instead of my Armour thyroid.

The reason I'm not taking the Armour thyroid pill is because everything I've read says not to take both, so I decided it was worth the experiment to stop my regular thyroid pills. So far, I can't tell a difference in how I feel, (but I can usually "coast" for a few days or even up to a week or two if my thyroid level was "up" when I stop taking it.)

Does anyone have more info on this? I didn't go in to ask my doctor about what he thinks, because it would take more than a month to get in to see him for anything but an emergency, and I also think he'd just tell me to stay on the thyroid pills. I'd really like to see if this iodine gives my thyroid what it needs...just wondering if there's anyone out there who is trying this, too....I guess I'm hoping that by giving my thyroid gland the iodine it has been missing, it will work properly again...

Am I just deluding myself?

Why can't take them both? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Good question...I am certain that last week, I had read in several different, reliable places that you can't take both at the same time...but darned if I can find those same articles now!

Maybe I will take both...?

Do you have a goiter (massive lump on the front of the neck)? These are really only seen in the 3rd world, due to inadequate iodine intake. Our U.S. diets are more than adequate.

Your hypothyroidism is probably due to a different pathology (ex. autoimmune). Thus, it cannot be treated simply through iodine supplementation.

I found some "water purification tablets" at Wal-Mart, two or three tablets per quart makes a dilute iodine solution. I am trying to drink 1/2 cup daily-- it tastes horrid :p

I also eat nori (seaweed) once a day.

Actually, I did have a goiter, but the Armour thyroid I take has shrunk it so that I don't feel it anymore. Altho' my lump wasn't "massive", it was choking me.

Maybe this is the link you found?

If you have hypothyroidism, you do not want to take iodoral (considered an "alternative medicine") without discussing it with your provider. Most medical physicians (MDs) would not recommend iodine for autoimmune hypothyroidism (the most common type).

I was being facetious, and apologize. But here is an page about Hashimoto's (autoimmune disease causing hypothyroidism, very common) and the goiter:

Also thyroid hormone can build up so the way you feel on day 1 or 2 of doing both could be miniscule vs. how you'll feel on day 7 when you could feel OD'ed. Would involve a provider vs. just trying it. You're supposed to taper up and down on thyroid medd for a good reason. Adding iodine could be like fuel on the fire and hyperthyroidism can be very uncomfortable and dangerous.

I think iodine will only help if you're hypothyroid due to iodine deficiency. But I've been hearing recently that iodine deficiency is pretty prevalent in the US.

I keep hearing from folks who have tested as being iodine deficient that kelp does basically nothing for them. But I first picked up kelp tablets cause it was the only iodine I could find to buy easily. And everytime I take them, I get a clearheaded burst of energy - not like crazy adrenaline surge energy - more like being fully awake.

I did the skin test thingy and was deficient (no surprise).

I think we're just starting to hear a lot more about the iodine deficiency nationally. There are all those things in our environment/food/etc that compete with it - bromine in the bread or chlorinated or flouridated water.

I was surprised that Eades included it in his latest book, because the research feels so new to me - but I think that's just me having had my eyes closed to it for years.

Unfortunately the skin test doesn't really work. Just shows how quickly your skin absorbs stuff you put on it.

Dr. Davis from heartscanblog has been posting about it a lot recently too.

Seemed too easy to be true. I'll look into that blog. Thanks

Iodine sublimes into the air, especially if heated -- I put some on my desk and it disappeared almost as quickly as on my skin, one reason iodine is sold in dark bottles

The stuff I mixed is still brown though :p
