I was curious to see if anyone has had the new surgery where they remove part of your stomach to help you to lose weight. Would this surgery be good for low carbers????

This is a site of a woman who did have that type of surgery, she goes into a lot of detail with pictures -- it takes some time to get on it, but once you've read it you will never forget it.

She journals her entire procedure -- I think reading this will really give you a very honest look into what it entails.

She also shows pictures of two other surgeries she had to remove excess skin.

It seems to me that the amount of food is not as important as the type of food you eat. It's easy to eat less but not so easy to lose fat. If hunger and portion size are a problem for you, try herbal supplements that are safe. Pretty much anything with potassium (L-Glutamine , Chickweed, etc.) are safe and natural options.

Those may help in the short term but starving yourself leads to less fat loss because metabolism goes into the safety zone and shuts down. I may be guessing now but a figure I've read is you want to stay at least within 1200-1300 calories for optimal Basal fat loss.

Just some of my thoughts...

And, here is the link to a discussion that has been going on about it over the past few days:

The most horrifying story! The downside of gastric bypass surgery. (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39866)

After reading the above thread, I don't think I would even consider having that type of surgery unless I was faced with iminent death if I didn't and even then I think I would low carb before that. It's unfortunate that the poor lady who had this done and went through so much pain and suffering to loose the weight died after all that. I would advise anyone to seriously consider the consequences of such a surgery and realize that if they do have it, their life will never be the same again not to mention that it will involve a great deal of pain and a very long recovery time. I think such surgeries should only be used as a last resort for the extremely overweight when all serious attempts at diet and exercise have failed, not as an "easy" way to loose weight.

I have been profoundly affected by what I read on that thread. (The site itself is no longer up.)

The joys the lady spoke of are the same joys as people have shared here on this forum. (It is a mistake, sometimes, to believe there is only one source for joy.) And she went through such torment to get it.

And the ultimate price was much too high. I apologize in advance for any toes I might step on here, but I've come to think the bypass surgery is NOT RIGHT FOR ANYONE.

All it does is control your portions. YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR OWN PORTIONS. Without the terrible consequences.
