I'm a newby here so if I am asking a question for the zillionth time, or if I've posted this in the wrong forum, please forgive me!
Does anyone know what the scoop is on colonics or bowel irrigation? I went to get one for the first time last week and have to say I did see a tremendous boost to my metabolism after it..not to mention something things I can't mention here passing out of my system (!)
On the other hand, some research on the internet has led me to believe that maybe they are not safe, and in some cases can puncture the colon walls?!
Does anyone have any information or thoughts on this?!
Thanks!
GAMBARE!!

Aww, come on! Share! Were there any parasites? Really long tapeworms? It's something I'm interested in.
I can't answer your question, but I would think that it could be iffy if improperly administered or performed to often.
As I recall, this question has never been asked, which is a rare treat!

But really, parasites? I find that strangely intriguing. Maybe he was just talking about a long lost popcorn kernal that washed out or something. And just where do you have to go to get something like that done? Or can you do it at home (with I assume lots of plastic sheeting and paper towels).
ANyone want to say "EWWWWW!" again? ;)

You have to go to a clinic to have it done properly. Some places that I've read about use coffee as the liquid.

Thanks for all your comments!!
Well colonics seems to be all the rage here in Hong Kong (from high society madams to working execs, etc.)... there are now quite a few colonic "salons" which are spruced up, professional places (much like a beauty salon). What happens in great detail is that they hook you up to a machine which siphons water into your colon, forcing your colonic muscles (peristalsis) to push everything out!
So what comes out? 20 year old guck (a colleague of mine saw a marble that she remembered swallowing as a kid!), mucus lining  ! and of course lots of softened stool...but it's not as gross as it sounds..it looks sort of like silt in water..
Afterwards they give you acidophollus pills to replace your bacteria and isotonic water. Women who go there swear by it, they say it helps asthma, to lose weight, skin problems and allergies. The theory is that it removes toxins from the body that get left in the colon for ages.
After one, I feel a lot lighter for a few days and I notice a boost in metabolism like I'm hungrier and I lose weight faster..but I am doing it more for health than weight loss!
Karen, you're absolutely right about the coffee! They can use organic coffee to cleanse the colon and even do a liver flush (!) which sounds too scary for me..
We'll see how it goes!!

Thanks for the info Gambare. I've only ever read stuff about it and never talked to someone who has had it done.
I'm going to Hong Kong next year, so maybe I'll have a liver flush while I'm there.

I think it's a load of... poop, no pun intended. :D Your colon doesn't need irrigation any more than your eyeballs do. It keeps itself "clean" enough. Your intestinal wall cells have a very high turnover rate and are constantly shedding. Claims of "parasites" or "toxins" in your body are totally bogus. If you had parasites or toxin exposure, you'd probably be long dead!

This procedure is only approved by the FDA for people who are about to have certain diagnostic procedures like endoscopy. It has no proven health benefits but many health risks, including heart attack from all the water - your colon is where most of your water is absorbed. It's risky.
I'm all for natural medicine, but I'm highly opinionated when it comes to crazy pseudo-science used to make people sound sick when they aren't, just to you'll hand over your money - and in this case, possibly your health.

I'll add my EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
I have heard of cases of electrolyte imbalances following these procedures which if severe enough can be fatal. I'd be very cautious in having this procedure done. Actually, I wouldn't have it done at all unless I needed it before some type of colon exam. I had to "clense"once before a sigmoidoscopy and I hope I never have to do it again...the cramping was very uncomfy and I felt pretty awful for a day or two afterward.

I realise that this is an old thread but I have to say something. What about bowel tone? There are muscles involved here and if they don't work, they get lazy just like my stomach muscles ;) The last thing you want is for your bowel to HAVE to be cleaned out because it doesn't work on it's own anymore. I've nursed in geriatrics for a long time and have met folks who've done this all their lives. Terrible trouble!

I mean really, who wants a hose stuck up their bum unless absolutely necessary?

Tooround..
You make a very good point. You can get dependent on enemas (let's face it, that's exactly what these are) just like you can get dependent on laxatives. I'd be very cautious with procedures like these unless they are deemed medically necessary by a health professional.

aside from constipation, am I the only one to have experienced a radical increase in the amount I elimnate? It's bizarre, and I wonder if I'm getting too much fiber and water . . . do I need to bring back some carbs?
Anybody?

Did you rather suddenly start consuming those things called vegetables? :) I don't think it's a problem to "go" more, as long as you're not talking diarrhea or cramps/discomfort. That would be abnormal and a reason to see the doctor. Otherwise... I wouldn't worry.
