How To Adapt Your Meal Plan- Phase I
The South Beach Diet? is designed so that you can easily swap meals and ingredients. If you don't like eggs for breakfast, have low-fat cottage cheese or lean meat instead. Not a fish lover? Then choose lean beef or poultry. In Phase 1 of the diet, you can eat as many proteins and vegetables as you like, plus fats like olive oil. Fruit and starches aren't allowed until Phase 2. Here's a look at some general eating guidelines. For specific food choices, check out the Phase 1 Foods to Enjoy & Avoid list.
BREAKFAST
Protein: Quantity is not limited. Start with a 2 oz. portion, eat slowly, go back for seconds if still hungry.
Vegetables: Minimum 1/2 cup or 6-8 oz. tomato or vegetable juice.
Fruit: None
Starch: None
Milk/Dairy: 2 cups allowed daily (including yogurt)
Fat: 1 tsp mayonnaise, trans-free margarine, or oil (optional)
SNACK
Snacks are required. Choose a protein, vegetable, fat-free plain yogurt, or nuts/seeds. A snack that combines protein (1 oz.) and vegetables is encouraged.

How to adapt your meal plan - Phase 2
In Phase 2, you'll gradually begin to reintroduce healthy carbohydrates into your diet. Here's how to do it: Week one and two: Add in two good carb choices daily. We suggest you reintroduce fruit at lunch, dinner, or as a snack, but it's not the best choice first thing in the morning at breakfast. We recommend a high-fiber cereal for breakfast. Week three and four: move to four good carbs choices daily: 1-2 fruits and 1-2 starches. Read more advice on reintroducing carbs here. Want specific food choices? You can now eat anything from the Phase 1 Foods to Enjoy list as well as items from the Phase 2 Foods to Reintroduce list.

I just want to clarify to those of you who have been 'following' me...and helping me...
I originally stated that my start weight was 165. This is what the scale at home showed. At that time, the scale at work showed 167. For obvious reasons, I went with the lower number. Two things - I am told that the scale here at work is very accurate. Also, I'm finding that I'm actually weighing myself HERE and not at home...so I feel I should use these numbers, in order to stay accurate. So, technically, I am actually down 4 pounds since last Monday. Feels great!

I'm almost tempted to take my name off the weigh in list these days. It's depressing entering a new gain in every week. I'm struggling here desperately fellow SBers. I just can't seem to get it together. I know in time that the motivation will return. Summer is notoriously hard for me but I will persevere. I need to keep coming here, even though the reporting isn't pretty.

Do You Have the Right Attitude?
Do you have what it takes to reach your weight-loss goals? If you think it's all about diet and exercise, you're wrong.
It sounds crazy, I know. Exercise and a proper diet are crucial to all weight-loss and fitness programs. But to reach any long-term goal — especially one that requires a major lifestyle change — you need to improve your attitude too. You can have all the external support in the world, but if your self-esteem is in the toilet, you'll never have long-term success.
Having the right attitude is so important because thought is behavior. The power of the mind is total — the way you think about yourself manifests as your reality. We all know how easily negative thoughts can lead to lack of confidence, hopelessness, and depression. You've heard about self-fulfilling prophecy, right? Well, if you tell yourself that you'll always be fat or you'll never find happiness, chances are you'll end up fat and unhappy. Hey, it makes sense.
Okay then, let's turn that scenario around. Tell yourself that you can get fit and you will be happy. It's that simple. You can master your own fate with positive thinking!

Thanks Gayle! I was thrilled when I stepped on that scale this morning!!!! Its so easy to eat healthy though I did have blue cheese cole slaw the other day and Judy let me know that blue cheese is a no no. :) I was soooo sad to have to give it up but such success has made it not so big a sacrifice after all!

How To Adapt Your Meal Plan- Phase I
The South Beach Diet? is designed so that you can easily swap meals and ingredients. If you don't like eggs for breakfast, have low-fat cottage cheese or lean meat instead. Not a fish lover? Then choose lean beef or poultry. In Phase 1 of the diet, you can eat as many proteins and vegetables as you like, plus fats like olive oil. Fruit and starches aren't allowed until Phase 2. Protein: Quantity is not limited. Start with a 2 oz. portion, eat slowly, go back for seconds if still hungry.

I've used Smart Balance on my veggies and as a spread.
Now, my advice to you on eating a multi grain muffin so soon into your phase II.
I'd wait...I don't think that adding in flour at this stage of your phase II is wise.....way too soon. Start out with sweet potato first as that is a starchy veggie....second step would be to go to an actual grain as in oats in oatmeal. rolled, steel cut or old fashioned oats are acceptable...no instant!!

According to most people that push the SAD...whole wheat products are da bomb! Not to me and many people around here.:nono:
Wheat can be very addictive. Also, if you are engaging in very strenuous exercise, then the bread/flour may not be a factor...but if you aren't, flour will inhibit your weight loss...any flour!! :idea:
I wouldn't be telling you any of this if I didn't know it to be true. If you do go ahead with the muffin, know that 1/2 is a serving, not the whole muffin. And....if your weight slows or stops, then please don't eat them again until later when you are close to your goal. :)

I'm scared to weight in today. I was 160 last night, with a full stomach of food...and I usually weight mid day on an empty stomach...but I was in the ER and received IV fluids, so I just know I'm going to be up today. Oh well. We'll see later.

FYI- There is nothing stopping you all from using your weighin from Sunday or Saturday. I tend to use my Saturday weighin but not this week as I was out to dinner Friday night and had water weight gain, from too much salt, to get rid of.
A key to seeing a good low weighin 2 days in a row, is to not use food rewards when you see a good weight on the scale. This is something that I'm always working on with myself. :o :lol:

Judy - I was having the whole lightheaded / sharp pains in the head thing again. Which, i knew was from not eating enough over the weekend, though it was still worrisome. But, I went to get in the shower and as soon as I undressed, I saw little purple spots all over my body...the size of a mole, or larger freckle...but they were purple! Almost looked like bleeding under the skin. I freaked out and ran right to the ER. Before even running tests, the doc took one look at my urine and said, "You're in Ketoacedosis", which he explained I WANT if I'm trying to lose weight, but that this was way, way too much. Blood tests confirmed. I've elaborated further in my journal. He couldn't explain the purple dots. I have an appt. with my family doctor tomorrow, who will probably refer me to a dermatologist. All other blood tests came back clear (clotting, HIV, liver functions)...but they did confirm that my body is starving. :confused:

Its always your choice Gayle....I was trying to give all of you other options as we are all working hard at this and deserve to acknowledge the work. :agree:
If its better for you to weighin on Friday, then do that!!
But the point of not weighing in on Friday is to avoid the food rewards that can happen over the weekend. :o

Before even running tests, the doc took one look at my urine and said, "You're in Ketoacedosis", which he explained I WANT if I'm trying to lose weight, but that this was way, way too much.
I'm not a doctor, nurse, or anything else medically connected, but from what I know and have read, ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition that occurs in Type 1 diabetics. Unless you're a Type 1 diabetic, most likely what you had was ketosis, which is non-life threatening. If your doctor told you that you had ketoacidosis, I would question why he/she thought so. Ketoacidosis that would occur in a non-diabetic is somewhat suspicious.

Oh absolutely we deserve to acknowledge our hard work and having a good Monday weigh in IS without a doubt proof of that. It's just not an accurate representation of the thread if we don't weigh Monday -- or weigh in consistently whatever day you choose.
I tend to use my Saturday weighin but not this week as I was out to dinner Friday night and had water weight gain, from too much salt, to get rid of.
I don't know - I've owned up to my weight fluctuations - I'd love to choose yesterday's number instead of today's but it's just not the case. Perhaps I'll just continue to be accountable for my weight in my journal like I do now.
I'm not trying to be argumentative at all - I just don't see the point. We all have fluctuations in our numbers....

No clue. I'm stumped, too. I'm just going by what he told me for now. I did make a follow up with my regular doctor, and will see him tomorrow at 11:45. Thanks!

You have an issue with when I chose to count my weight? Please explain as I don't get this at all.

I am not looking for weight loss any longer and have hesistated in the past about weighing in here. But I decided long ago that I would weigh in with whoever is doing SB also. Maintenance goals are different from weight loss goals.
If it works for me to use numbers that help me to feel better about myself and what I'm currently doing, why should that bother you?

Well, okay then......just keeping it real...
So you take yourself off this weighin because you don't like that I am not consistent with my weighin day? I'm confused by this...totally!!
I try to not obsess about the numbers on the scale any longer. I use it as a tool to tell me what I can or can't eat on a given day. I used to log all my food daily into my journal for accountability and had a hard time not doing it any longer after I made it to my goal weight. It made me feel safe knwoing that I had to do that each day. But it had become a crutch that I wanted to let go of...and I did.
When I first reached my goal weight of 160, I kept going to give myself some breathing room. I maintained my weight between 156-159 for a very long time, about 3 yrs. as 160 was my cutoff for cutting way back and getting it back down again.
Last year, I got down lower and have set my upper limit at 155 now.....that is when I scale it way back for several days to keep the scale in my comfy range. I work within my range and if and when I have a water weight gain, I am on top of it to see it gone. But I am within my range of acceptable (150-155)weight and that is my goal.
If I chose to not report an inflated weight from eating out, thats my choice and I hope that I am not being judged for it. And just for the record, I was up to 155 on Saturday morning.
Now....I choose to always use my lowest weight of the week when I was still in weight loss mode. Its what kept me motivated to keep moving forward. I knew that I'd get there again even when I saw the inevitable bounce back from any new low. It was like I was dangling a carrot in front of a donkey...it worked for me. :lol:
Thats why I suggested that you can use any day that you want to weighin....we each need to make this work for us and our individual needs.
Just because something has always been a certain way( Monday weighins ~ WW), doesn't mean it is written in stone. I try to stay flexible when it come to these tools that support us, not define us.

Judy, here's the thing with me and then let's leave it alone. If we're having a weekly weigh in with specified dates then I feel we should be reporting our weights on those days - not picking and choosing which number we like best? KWIM? For me -- just for me, that's important. It's hard to admit a gain but I do it. That's why I'll choose to report my weight in my journal....
Everyone is free to have their own opinions -- I have no issue with it at all.....I have no issue with when you weigh in. It's just not a true representation for me and wouldn't be a useful tool for me.
If I were to say something honestly --- you are looked up to here by people and offer a great deal to the South Beachers on the board. To know that you did perhaps fluctuate may make someone feel not so embarassed or apprehensive to post theirs...It would for me!
Anyway - you've come so far and are doing a fantastic job here....let's just drop it - K? :)

I'm not going to start a new thread for July this time and want to let this one run on. I've removed my name from this list but will still be here with you.
A few names have dropped from the list due to no weighins during June. If you return and want to be back on it, please add your name back on.
I need to explain the way I have always perceived these weighins.
It was never a "Mondays only" weighin. There was never any rule about it and I could see that making the date the Monday of each week, could easily be seen as it was. Its a good date for many to utilize as it will help them to stay on plan over the weekends when they are seeking weight loss. Off plan eating on the weekends leads to a lot of staying in one place...and when you want/need to see movement, that can be very discouraging. When I was in weight loss mode, I did use the Monday weighin to keep my on my plan on the weekends. :idea:
The only rule for being part of this weighin, is that you are eating the SBD way and that if you fail to weighin for a whole month, you fall off the list.
However, as time has gone by, it has become obvious to me, that some people need to post their weighins when it works best for them and that can change from week to week. I make no judgments about when people need or chose to post their weights. That is entirely up to the individual. So I've included "w/of" = week of, prior to the dates across the top to try to make it more clear to all. :)

My husband lost about 35 pounds on Sb during the winter, but has put on some of what he lost when we stopped. He loves this WOE though so I have no problem keeping him on it.

So, I'm starting to fall off the wagon a little bit. :mad: I know I need to do the exercise because my body won't lose weight any other way. However, I can't motivate myself to go to the gym....I just don't have time anymore. Does anyone have suggestions for exercise? :help: Also, my eating habits have been okay but not perfect. I REALLY need to get back on track.
Is Au Jus sauce okay on SB? I ate it today on roast beef. I know I shouldn't have, seeing as I was unsure but, I just did it anyways. Anyway, at least I'm not gaining weight! :thup:

The au jus is OK...if you feel are going off track, maybe you need to keep logging your food each day into your journal. Its a good way to keep yourself in check when you want/need to see loss. :idea:

I've been kinda missing from the boards lately. The carb addict in me had taken over and I was really struggling to get control again.
I wish I could be one of those persons who goes on a diet and just sticks with it until all of the excess weight is gone. But I'm just not.:confused:

I'm sorry that you are having trouble staying on your plan.
I used to be like that also. It wasn't until I started my journey this time, did I begin to see it was my view of it as a diet and not a way of eating for life, that helped me to stick and stop white knuckling it...if you know what I mean.

All I can say is, ditto. Sticking to a diet just long enough to lose those 10, 20, 30lbs we want to shed doesn't work for permenant weight loss. All we can hope to gain by that are those 30lbs plus 15 more(!) when we return to our old eating habits. Only by making our new way of eating the rule, not the exception, can we hope to be counted among the successful.
It's a difficult road, but not impossible.

One thing that I can share with you is that eating foods you love while on plan, is a very good way to make this a permanent change.
So, ask yourself, who do you really love to eat and find a way to make it so that it fits the plan.
I've tried some new foods to me along the way too...that has made my list of acceptable foods longer than it was. :)

Hello everyone!
I started South Beach two weeks ago and began Phase Two today after losing 10 lbs on P1. I'm feeling fantastic and apparently my face is thinner which is great to hear. I have some really fantastic support as my husband is doing SB with me (he lost 8 lbs) despite not really understanding how the diet works. He's a bit of a Weight Watchers devotee, but even he admits that he would have been eating lots of unhealthy stuff if he was on WW, whereas he's been totally healthy on SB.

Just checking in. I'm still firmly on-plan, although I will admit to skipping a few snacks here and there, but that's okay on Phase 2, right? The scales haven't shifted at all so far this week which is slightly disheartening but I'm keeping on keeping on as I feel great otherwise!

I have somehow managed to lose a pound this week. Not bad, especially as I am a bit bloated. I am very, very pleased and my BMI has dropped 0.5, too!

Hard day with sky-high stress levels, but I managed to stay on-plan. On the plus side, the chilli I made for dinner tonight was pretty good, so it should be amazing by tomorrow night and I won't have to cook! Hooray!

I do, but I suspect that it is the caffeine in Pepsi Max or just a general excess of artificial sweeteners. I haven't felt quite right since I tried some diabetic sweets containing polyols/sugar alcohols last week.
I suspect the caffeine/Pepsi as I was fine all afternoon until I came home and had a sip of Pepsi :( Thanks, Judy!

Ouch, Judy!! You can be sure that I am reading labels very carefully now, especially with sugarfree treats. My tummy seems to be no longer in distress which is a massive relief. I haven't tried anything caffeinated today as I'd quite like to have a nice comfortable day!! I have also done one mile of WATP which was v.energetic and I feel great!!

I just realized that I forgot to put in my weight for last week. That's ok. Not much of a change. But on a positive note I didn't gain a ton of weight considering the fact that I fell off the wagon! :lol:

Hello All, I have enjoyed reading your posts. JudyNYC you've got some good advice and DonnaLiz67 I love your siggy, I'm a flybaby too!
Well I will start by saying that 2 years ago My son was killed in a tragically on his way home he was 19. I just didn't want to live anymore and ate my way from the 125 pounds that I was to 174. Thinking dying of a heart attack might make me be able to live with my son in heaven anyway. I praise Jesus that he was saved, and I know I will see him again. It seems from scripture ezekiel 38-39, and Psalm 83 that the Rapture of the church may take place any time now.
I care again about life, and living and I want to lose the weight I put on during the first 2 years of my grieving process. I need you guys to help me stay accountable. I love the daily weigh ins I know some people say don't weigh every day, but It helps me.
On a happy note, we are going on our first cruise with our son who lives with us and is now 19, (a whole other reason to worry since he's the same age as his brother was when he was killed) anyway, we are going as a family with his girlfriend and her family. I'm really looking forward to it, and want to drop a significant amount of weight before we leave October 30th. Just a couple months away!
So glad to be on board with you all, I hope to be an encouragement to you all as we journey this road together!

Yes, I know that you are on South Beach...as this is the SB section of this site. ;) I'm really glad to see that you moved onto phase II in your 3 rd week as it so important to keep moving forward. Many try to stay in phase I for too long...and against my words of wisdom. :lol: I float between all the phases now to manage my weight loss.
FYI- the weighin itself is a weekly one...if you want to post your daily weight in this thread, feel free to just post it here and or...start a journal here and keep it there. :idea:

Sorry about that loss Angela...but perhaps this way you will have to find a different way to run your business.
Now onto the food thing...when I want to eat from stress or for comfort, I think about all the food that I can eat....I will not allow my mind to dwell in bad carbs.

Angela ((((((BIG HUGS))))) I am so sorry you've had to shut down your dream, that is what it was wasn't it? Your dream doesn't have to die, maybe this is the Lords way of taking you down a different path, or at doing the same thing from a different angle. You can't have an online mortgage business with this company...are there others that encourage Mothers with young children at home, if not there should be! I hope you will not use food to medicate your pain, it doesn't work anyway. Just makes you feel worse.

Thanks so much everyone! It was my dream, yes, and I'm trying to find a commercial kitchen to work from, but it doesn't seem to be a concept that has caught on in the UK :( Oh well. I'm still proud of what I achieved and I might start up again if we move house in the next few years.
I maintained this week which I'm really pleased about, especially after such a huge loss last week. Instead of going off plan when I was very miserable, I wound up making a huge curry with loads of veggies, chickpeas and 4oz of beef made into little spicy meatballs. All totally legit, eye-wateringly spicy and delicious. A good curry cheers me up almost as much as cake, and is better for me too!
I've also played lots of football and some netball too with my little monster and his friends. And I've just come in from the garden where I was weeding and I've also picked my first cherry tomatoes so I'm quite cheerful now. And this is a total epic, so I shall stop here :P

Oh Angela! Your attitude is beautiful, and you are doing exactly the right things to motivate! I think I understand now that you wanted to bake or do cooking of some sort in your home and the Mortgage company wouldn't allow this. We have the same sort of thing here but it's not the mortgage companies so much as the city ordinances and zoning.
I had a similar but the same sort of thing happen to me, I wanted to bake cookies and sell them, but didn't have a commercial kitchen to work from. We went to a regional restaurant chain and gave them samples and they loved my cookies so much that they let me bake them in their own commericial kitchen that they had off site. I wonder if you could approach some of the local restaurants with the proposition of giving them a percentage of your baking/cooking profits, for them as well.
Good for you that you made that delicious sounding curry recipe! I love curry too, and would love the recipe.
You didn't gain and stayed on track despite the setbacks proves that you are going to make it girl! Awesome job!
Thanks so much everyone! It was my dream, yes, and I'm trying to find a commercial kitchen to work from, but it doesn't seem to be a concept that has caught on in the UK :( Oh well. I'm still proud of what I achieved and I might start up again if we move house in the next few years.
I maintained this week which I'm really pleased about, especially after such a huge loss last week. Instead of going off plan when I was very miserable, I wound up making a huge curry with loads of veggies, chickpeas and 4oz of beef made into little spicy meatballs. All totally legit, eye-wateringly spicy and delicious. A good curry cheers me up almost as much as cake, and is better for me too!
I've also played lots of football and some netball too with my little monster and his friends. And I've just come in from the garden where I was weeding and I've also picked my first cherry tomatoes so I'm quite cheerful now. And this is a total epic, so I shall stop here :P

Oh Angela! Your attitude is beautiful, and you are doing exactly the right things to motivate! I think I understand now that you wanted to bake or do cooking of some sort in your home and the Mortgage company wouldn't allow this. We have the same sort of thing here but it's not the mortgage companies so much as the city ordinances and zoning.
Yes, I was baking cupcakes to order for weddings, corporate events etc. It was going really well, too.
Good for you that you made that delicious sounding curry recipe! I love curry too, and would love the recipe.
I'll try to remember what I chucked into it and post it in the recipe thread :)
You didn't gain and stayed on track despite the setbacks proves that you are going to make it girl! Awesome job!

Sorry - been swamped between the new job and getting the kids settled back into a school routine. I'm here, I'm doing "phase 1.5" this week, and my weight is down a little. Trying out new recipes so I wont get into the same-old-same-old routine which usually leads to a cheat. Having the right things on hand is making a difference, PLUS I got my DH on board and we are being accountable to one another. :agree:

Just sneaking back in. September has been ridiculously indulgent, especially with spending a few days in London for our little boy's birthday. Well, an early birthday while daddy had time off work, but you get the idea. We had a gorgeous Lebanese meal on Friday and I fell upon the salad like a woman possessed. Never have I felt so glad to see vegetables before!!
So, back on the wagon today with Phase 1, probably for the full two weeks!! On the plus side, I had to punch a smaller hole in my belt the other day, so something good's been happening!

It was tabbouleh, but with hardly any bulgar wheat. I'll certainly be recreating it at home :yum: It was just so lovely to taste zingy, fresh vegetables again and I felt great after the first mouthful!

Here, tabbouleh I've had is made with wheat germ....bulgar wheat is a good idea too.

Oh, just your regular tabbouleh. So, chopped parsley mainly, a little chopped coriander, chopped deseeded tomatoes, little bit of chopped red onion. Plenty of salt and pepper, with a dressing of lemon juice and olive oil. It was all incredibly fresh produce but I think my craving for something green made it taste even better :lol:

When I buy this pre made salad, I find that I will eat larger portions that I should. :o I think that the wheat( even just the germ) truly does trigger my appetite. :idea:

I'd be more inclined to try buckwheat or quinoa than the brown rice and use a greater ratio of vegetables to grain. I think they'd suit the mouthfeel of the salad better. I don't have too much of a problem with wholewheat, so I'll sling in a little bulgar when I'm in phase 2 again.
The best thing about the meal, however, was that it got our little boy eating enthusiastically again. He loved dipping things in hummous and moutabal, and digging a huge spoon into the pile of tabbouleh. I will happily bend over backwards to do mezze style meals if it means he'll eat a decent amount of food per day. He was so stuffed that his belly button popped out! (And he got up and started belly dancing when some drum solo music started. I hadn't realised how much attention he'd paid to my own dancing over the years!)
