So, I am brand new to SBD and started on Phase One yesterday. I had a couple questions I was hoping you could help me with....

1. How does the exercise thing work? I have been walking for about 1 1/2 hours and doing Taebo's Fat Blasting Workout tape every other day. Does that sound right? Or are there other options? The Taebo stuff really kicked my butt so, I'm looking for suggestions :help:
2. Does anyone know if Crystal Light is okay? I am looking to liven up my water....drinking plain water isn't my thing. If not, any suggestions??
3. Are you allowed to eat, like, hamburgers or veggieburgers on Phase One? I work at a restaurant that is famous for their burgers so, it is extremely tempting to eat one. I was just curious.

Thank you for all your help in advance and I am so excited about this!!!

Good luck:

1. Try to drink plain water and a gallon a day. I believe that is the REAL secret to loss. You simply have to figure out how to adapt and like things you currently don't. Throw all your bad habits out the window.
2. For a good start, follow the P1 plan and don't eat burgers for now.
3. Exercise is really not necessary to lose weight, although it will make you feel good and tighten up areas. I say this because my pinched nerve doesn't allow me to exercise for now. I've lost 80 lbs by diet and diet alone. Excessive exercise (like you're doing) will stimulate your appetite, so be careful. I get enough exercise by the amount of daily activity I do.

Hi Amanda --- I just started SB on Monday also! If I'm not mistaken - ground beef is okay it just needs to be sirloin or lean (correct me if I'm wrong). And according to my book - sugar free drinks are okay??? I'm thinking veggie burgers wouldn't be the best choice IF they are made with fillers and such. Just my two pennies - I could be wrong. Wow - I think your exercise is great - I'm not really doing anything! Good luck to you!

HI Amanda! Welcome to the Beach! :)

Hamburger is OK, but like Gayle said, make sure it's extra lean or ground sirloin. I don't know that I'd make a habit of eating too much of it anyways, as it's higher in fat than many other meat choices even if it is extra lean. Veggie burgers are good, but please read the labels very carefully. Sugar free drinks are OK to use. I use them on occassion. Be aware of your reactions to them though. For some people they do cause cravings.

I think exercise is great! Congrats on doing it! You can do any kinds of exercise that you like. If you don't really like doing something, then chances are you won't stick with it. While technically you might not need it for weight loss, it is so beneficial for so many other things that I think it's a worthwhile pursuit.Keep up the good work.

Please come join us on the weigh in thread. There are food lists and menus posted on the first page of the thread for reference! :)

The walking is great and if you feel up for it, the Taebo is fine also. Phase I can be hard to do and exercise a lot at the same time so go light with it, OK?
2. Does anyone know if Crystal Light is okay? I am looking to liven up my water....drinking plain water isn't my thing. If not, any suggestions??
Water is not negotiable, sorry!! You can have some Crystal light but not all your water is to come from it as it has sugar alcohols. I have had trouble drinking water also and I find the lemon/lime flavored seltzer works better for me. I also like to take a couple of lemon slices in plain water and that is OK too.

3. Are you allowed to eat, like, hamburgers or veggieburgers on Phase One? I work at a restaurant that is famous for their burgers so, it is extremely tempting to eat one. I was just curious.
We eat lean sources of protein so if your place uses lean beef in their burger, its OK....but if they don't, try to not eat them daily. As for veggie burgers, what do they put in them? knowing ingredients will help you make a good choice.

You've gotten some good advice and I just wanted to add mine to the mix.

Just wondering if the place you work has something like turkey burgers or chicken burgers. Those could be an option but of course you have to watch out for hidden carbs and those condiments can sometimes be a problem. Of course you will discard the bun, right? Wishing you the best.

no the place I work doesn't sell turkey or chicken burgers. The veggieburers they sell are the Boca Burgers that you can buy in the store. Are those okay?

You are going to really hate me....sorry! :o
No... Boca burgers will be OK when you get to phase II as they also contain wheat gluten. Not for phase I.

On the SBD drink by Kraft- any product that has the Kraft name on it and calls itself a SBD food, is just that a kraft highly processed food with a SBD label on it. It is NOT your best choice and it does not replace water. Sorry again but you need to know the truth.

The whole purpose of learning the SBD way is to eat whole fresh foods in their unprocessed form...not from boxes. That is why we are told to shop the perimeters of the store for fresh foods...not foods in boxes. Produce, dairy, meats....all are fresh.

I'm not saying that you should never eat any of the Kraft foods but they should not be what you turn to all the time as that is not the SBD way. I know that they are convenient but we do need to do a little work to eat healthy. :agree:
Once in a while is OK...not daily...and that drink is not instead of your water...but maybe once in a while. Besides, its fruit and thats not allowed on phase I anyway.

So...do you hate me yet?

LOL I don't hate you at all. :D I am so new to this thing..... I just wanna make sure I know what I am doing.

Water is fine for me....that's all I drink at work now so, it's all good. And, as long as the lemon thing is okay (I wasn't sure because it's fruit) then that's fine with me. I spent all weekend making my food for the week. I have that Prevention edition of the South Beach Diet Supercharged and I made almost all the recepies out of there. The turkey meatloaf, veggie quiches, and pork loin are AMAZING! I would recommend them. If anyone wants recipies, let me know.

Thank you SOOOOO much for all the great advice. It is really gonna help me along the way. :agree:

Good! I'm happy to know that you don't hate me.....yet!!
If you look at the food lists and meal plan charts aat the start of this thread, you'll find the condiments list on the phase I list and lemon juice is OK as a condiment. So you can use it to flavor your water.
I didn't know that Prevention had their own version of SB Supercharged...is it a paperback?

I hate you - just kidding :) You do a good deed for lots of folks (and put up with me at the same time)

Just had my neck surgery and having to keep myself cool and calm is a big challenge. No arm pain, but some finger tingling still (but will subside, according to my surgeon - it'd better - I'm a full time musician/pianist).

These days, I'm eating all sorts of stuff, but carefully. I love the way SB got me started and to my goal. I think everyone should give it a try and work their plan to the choices - what a great way to live an eating life that is full of wonderful, healthy choices :agree:

2. Make several 1/4" slits in pork loin. Slip garlic into slits. Brush loin with oil and season with salt and peper to taste.
3. Meanwhile, heat large cast-iron or other overproof skillet over high heat. Add pork loin and brown on all sides. Remove pan from heat.
4. Spread reserved mustard mixture over pork, then transfer skillet to oven and cook until a meat thermometer reaches 150F, about 30 min. Remove pan from oven and transfer pork to cutting board. Loosely cover with foil and let rest 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
