New to dieting & South Beach, maltodextrin came up listed as a 'sugar', yet I find it in mints, no-sugar added ice cream & other stuff.
In the book, it's Glycemic Index is 150 (extremely high).
So is it a sugar (I mean will it have the same effect as sugar)?
If so, how are they getting away with not calling it that?
Can anybody explain?

I'm afraid I don't know but I'm very interested. Is it yet another way the food industry is misleading us?

Thanks mammaD!
I've also viewed Maltodextrin as a sugar alcohol to be taken in very small quantities.( or face the wrath of extreme digestive upset and many hours in the toilet!)! if you know what I mean!! ;)

Ok, it's low-cal & has an unpleasant effect on your digestive system (if too much is used), but that still doesn't resolve my question as to wheter it's a good carb or bad carb. Like HFCS, I know to stay away from. Should I stay away from malodextrin?
The article suggests that it's absorbed very fast (like a bad carb). But maybe my answer lies in the amount/quantity used. If it's low calorie, that suggests that not enough of it is used to spike your sugar.
Maybe a diabetic would know, because they constantly talk about looking out for sugur alcohol.
If it's just an artificial sweetener, I can relate.
