The Glycemic Index for certain foods is a lot higher in the South Beach Book than most other G.I. references. Does anybody know if there is a reason for that?

I don't know why they'd do that....but some info differs like that and its up to us to make a good decision about which to use.

I would say that the food could make up for the higher GI by having additional fiber which slows down digestion. The whole idea of weight loss in the book is to slow down digestion in order to keep your system going which raises your metabolism, hope this helps.
