The 'diet wars' outcome may hold the future security of our nation. In nature the lean and hungry often dominate the fat and lazy.Amanda Turcotte wants to be all that she can be, but she's 25 pounds over the Army's weight limit. Obesity has become a major problem in armed services recruiting.
Her recruiter is sweating her down to regulation size with a grueling daily exercise regimen.
"If you need to puke there's a garbage can right there," Army recruiter Sgt. Jessica La Pointe told Turcotte ...http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=7142589&page=1

It is just not too fat to fight...it is too fat in general. Go down to the beach and look at all the fat rolls on our young people.

And if a guy or gal wants to go into the armed services, they should probably be thinking about their fitness before hand. What a radical idea, huh?

What a radical idea, huh?Yeah, truth is its very hard to exercise off the extra weight-- I blame our gov for putting out disinformation on health and diet in general-- I think the "4 Food Groups" of the 1950's was an improvement over what we have now :agree:

So, if the US were to reinstitute The Draft, would obesity be a valid excuse to avoid it? Or will they put everyone in boot camp and promote sweating, dehydration and bulemia as the routes to a healthy weight?

I saw the original television broadcast of this story.

Over 45,000 applicants have been rejected for military service due to overweight, in the past few years.

I don't recall anything being said about running track to lose weight - the way it was presented on TV, I thought that the actual reason the recruiter was making the young woman exercise aggressively was NOT to lose weight, but to prepare her for the rigors of bootcamp.

Some overweight people are amazingly physically fit, but not the young recruit shown on TV.
