About 6 months or so before I joined this forum, before I knew about low carbing, I was diagnosed with anal cancer. Not a pretty subject, to be sure. However, I've overcome some of the shame of talking about it in the past couple years. That this is the cancer Farrah Fawcett has, and has spoken openly about helps a little ;)

Initially I had several aggressive workups with biopsies and was told a year ago this month I was cancer-free by a specialist at OSU.

Yesterday, I got the news that in fact the tumor is back, and it's bad. I need "immediate surgery" is what they told my DH. :help: It would seem that this time, chemo and radiation are in my near future. I'd been having some symptoms and knew better than to ignore them. Good thing I didn't.

So I've been low carbing for almost 2 years at this point, and VLC/ZC for just over a month now.

I know cancer loves sugar. But I also tend to believe that some vegetables and some fruits (ie berries) contain anti-cancer ingredients and could be beneficial to me.

Therein lies the rub. :q: :q:

Is it better to stay as ZC as possible during cancer treatment? Or accept that some vegetables and fruits taken in very low amounts could have protective properties?

What would YOU do?

Cancers are different, some really depend on sugar and some don't. Our bodies are able to manufacture glucose so even if you don't eat any, your probably feeding it anyway, hopefully just less than if you were high carb. I'm not sure I'd know what to do either. Do the veggies and fruit help once the cancer is already going? Or are those preventative things?

I don't have an answer for you and I'd probably be debating the same thing you are.

I wish you well and send you many hugs for a speedy recovery.

Your body may tell you what it is you need. If, during the treatments all you can face eating is toast and tea, then I think that would be perfectly reasonable for you to eat that. If your tummy isn't mad at you and you can choose foods based on what you think you should eat versus what you want to eat, I would try to stay away from the refined carbs. I would stay away from sugar, if you can. But if not, try not to stress over it. Just concentrate on getting through!

When my son had leukemia there were times that his diet consisted of hotdogs, potato chips, and soda pop. This was food I never allowed in my house, and my other kids never got to eat. But it was what he was able to face (for some weird reason.) He was young and growing and I really wanted to get calories into him. In hind sight I think he needed calorie dense foods.

I don't know what chemos are used for your type of cancer, so be aware that it may matter what vitamins or supplements you may be taking. So, full disclosure!

I am sorry you have to go through this yet again. Doesn't seem fair...

Sorry to hear your cancer is back. While, I believe you need medical treatment I think there are some powerful things you can do nutritionally. You might not even need berries to do it. This is what I would do and believe me I would hate this a lot

I would crush two cloves of garlic really big cloves; pulverize a habenaro pepper by what ever means neccesary; grate fresh ginger to put in the mix; put it in whatever oil you believe is the healthiest, I don't know enough about oils to know which is best, I believe melted butter would work, anyway a couple tablespoons of your oil of choice and drink it down. This should help you before and after surgery in recovery and prevention.

Now, if you want it pleasant you could boil a chicken add the ingredients plus some brocolli for a nice soup. This might be a good thing in conjunction with chemo could get rid of the cells the chemo misses.

Please take a look at the Ozone therapy! The FDA has done everything in its power to erase all knowledge of the success of the ozone therapy in treating aids, cancer etc in order to protect their big drug friends that make tons of money off of cancer, aids etc treatments.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/8788977/Ozone-Blood-Treatment-Cures-Aids-Victims-in-Germany

"Ozone therapy, a revolutionary medical treatment producing far reaching results in human health care has now become a reality and is being practiced in the world today. With the noble intention of bringing up a healthy humanity such a privileged medical specialization is made available. It is blissful realization that millions of people in the world are going to be very fortunate in having such a splendid medical therapy. This therapy, first of it’s kind in the world, is being offered by Ozoneuniversity.com. This includes ozone therapy, a therapeutic diet and therapeutic counseling sharing the harmony as a whole.

Ozone therapy is the most powerful cleansing modality. Ozone is produced by lightening in nature and by pulsing high currents of electricity through medical grade oxygen. Oxygen is O2 and Ozone is O3. Ozone is very powerful in that it increases the stability of normal good healthy cells and it destroys all those immature, sick and deformed cells, which are foreign to the body, like viruses, bacteria, fungi etc. Ozone is an energized form of a super charged molecule classified scientifically as O3, O4, O5 etc. chemically, Ozone is oxygen with an extra molecule added. Electrically, Ozone is oxygen with a higher energy level. It is unstable and highly reactive. Singlet oxygen O1 is a highly reactive free radical that acts as a scavenger of other free radicals .The oxygen reacts with them to render them harmless, there by protecting cells from damage. Oxygen is the most vital element required for human life and it is the key to good health. The best way to optimize health is to oxygenate every cell in our body. The more oxygen we have in our system, the more energy we produce. The more efficiently we can eliminate wastes.

Ozone should be introduced in large quantities into the body so that the singlet oxygen molecule (O1) that is unattached and freely circulating is going to attack all invaders. It is the treatment of choice for a wide variety of diseases and has proven to be the safest medical therapy ever devised! The important thing to remember is that all physicians report good results, regardless of concentrations or volumes used. Ozone is not a drug and should not be considered as such.

There is absolutely no evidence suggesting that long term treatment on a daily basis had any detrimental effect. Doctors who have used it for decades have only positive results to report. There is evidence of free radical damage; in fact, ozone is the best free radical scavenger there is. Ozone also stimulates production of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, which are the enzymes in our cell walls
that protect our cells from free radical damage. A good normal cell is going to be protected by anti oxidants. Ozone stimulates the production of anti oxidants and thus preventing the cells being attacked by the free radicals. So ozone actually prevents free radical damage and it was Otto Warburg (Nobel Prize winner of 1931 and 1944 for medicine) who found out that cancer was produced by anaerobic cell function due to lack of O2 leading to loss of cell regeneration controller leading to multiple duplication of immature cells or cancer cells.

Ozone therapy was first practiced in 1880. Many methods of administering ozone have been developed since that time. The methods adopted can be grouped into the following categories."

FDA on stopping the OZONE therapy
"
http://www.familyhealthnews.com/arti...ed-mccabe.html

"For example, In New York City it is illegal to say any therapy helps AIDS.

This law has been used as an excuse to shut down experimental ozone clinical trials in progress before they could produce the documentation. There is plenty of documentation already around in major journals. See Ed McCabe's "O3 vs. AIDS" for proof. "

"Ozone therapy was accepted medicine in the USA from at least 1880 until 1932, a period of fifty-two years. "

"In 1929, a book called "Ozone and Its Therapeutic Action" was published in the USA. It listed 114 diseases and how to treat them with ozone. Its authors were the heads of leading American hospitals."

" In 1933, the American Medical Association (AMA), headed up by M. Fishbein, set out to eliminate in the USA all medical treatments that were competitive to drug therapy. The suppression of the use of ozone therapy by doctors in the USA began then, and continues to this day, except in thirteen states, where currently doctors are protected by state laws.

[See below for a list of the 13 states]

At the behest of the AMA, the FDA began seizing ozone generators in the 1940s.

So now you know, very briefly, the generally unknown history of ozone therapy in the USA.

Since 1933, the AMA and the FDA have done everything in their power to prevent ozone therapy from being used or even known about, in order to protect the profits of the pharmaceutical industry and promote the practices of the membership of the AMA.

These days, the FDA and the giant pharmaceuticals have interlocking directorships. (People are working, and taking money, from both sides, while still supposedly maintaining their impartiality - Dennis)"

Wow, some interesting information on this thread, thank you all so much.

To answer a couple questions:

The first time this was diagnosed it was Squamous Cell Carcinoma aka SCC, which is basically a skin cancer. Rare, but aggressive.

The accepted chemo is something called 5-FU plus mitomycin and/or combined with cisplatin for more advanced tumors. Radiation is a given, I think, at this point.

I do take many supplements, and my doctors are aware of them all.

I have long since done without processed foods and sugar but of course do still consume the occasional vegetable or slice of pink grapefruit. It was hard enough to turn off those Fuhrman-like voices in my head before (when I made the decision to try ZC) and it's even harder now.

I did a bit of research on sugar and cancer. I concluded that it doesn't cause or feed cancer, so berries would probably be ok if you need the nutrients. However, for me there are a lot more reasons to not have sugar(or foods with simple sugars) than trying to avoid cancer. In anycase, the better you can nourish yourself the better your results are going to be.

What would YOU do? What I did was research, research, research! Then I took supplements that seemed to have some anti-cancer properties, especially for prostate cancer, which I HAD. Here is a list of what I took at the begining. (http://www.intergate.com/~berts8nford7/PCa/PCaVitaminList.TXT)

Having brought my cancer "under control" in the six months following my positive biopsy, I could then reflect upon what I did and what happened. I have also learned more from the newest research. So if I were to "start over" here is what I would do.
1. Get my vitamin D level measured.
2. Have my blood serum copper level measured. Here is why. (http://www.moffitt.usf.edu/pubs/ccj/v6n5/article2.htm)
3. besides the list of supplements above, I would add Pomegranate. While most of the research I see on Pomegranate is in the prostate cancer field, I would add it for other cancers. This is what I did for Tumeric, which I found on a breast cancer site.

It is my opinion that many things can work synergistically where the result is greater than the sum of the individual results. To say it another way, if you take several supplements that have different mechanisms that are anti carcinogenic, while just one may not be enough to kill the cancer, the multiple attacks on the cells mechanisms that keep it alive may do the job by each one weakening the cancer a little, no one enough alone, but the sum does the job. In this same vein, restricting the blood glucose (VLC and only enough protein for your lean body mass) deprives the cancer of the "unlimited" energy that it has from a high carb diet. Thus, in a (presumed) weakened state, the cancer cannot effectively counter the anti cnacer properties of Vitamin D and all the other supplements.

Larry that is a great list. I think it would work well with a garlic and ginger dish eaten daily.

You've been given some really good advice, so I'll just add that I've read great things about pau d'arco and colostrum when it comes to fighting cancer. Also, I want to say that I wish you the best as you fight and win this battle. Take care of yourself.

Download and look at these slides.
Dose-Response of Vitamin D and a Mechanism for Prevention of Cancer (http://www.grassrootshealth.org/_download/Garland_C_Cance_%20Vitamin_%20DV1.pdf)
by Cedric F. Garland, Dr.P.H., Edward D. Gorham, M.P.H., Ph.D., Sharif B. Mohr, M.P.H., and Frank C. Garland, Ph.D.
and at the same time watch this video presentation of the slides if you can.
http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/1PsyaYNX1dw/default.jpgVitamin D and Cancer Prevention (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PsyaYNX1dw)
the slides are clearer to read than when presented live.

You can do the same with each of these talks (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=vitamin+d+grassrootshealth+uctelevision&aq=f)

Obviously it depends a bit on where you live but generally around 5000iu/daily Vitamin D3 is needed to keep status above 150nmol/l 60ng/mL. Regular 25(OH)D tests (http://www.grassrootshealth.org/daction/index.php) will ensure you are able to adjust you dose through the year to keep it at a reasonable level for cancer prevention/treatment.
