Does anybody else have to put up with this kind of nonsense?:

So about a couple of years ago my fave local supermarket installed all these televisions at the checkout stands and throughout the shopping areas hanging from the ceilings. They are constantly running these infomercials produced by the grocery company about how to prepare foods, pick produce, ideas for quick meals, etc. Now when I shop I rarely hear the musak anymore, they've taken to piping in prerecorded"public service" stuff about health tips more and more.

Anyhoo, just yesterday I was shopping there and more "health tips" were being announced, this time it was about how a diet high in fat could increase risk for heart disease. It was listing all the "bad" foods that should be "severely limited" in my diet, such as high-fat meats, eggs, oils and dairy products because "health experts agree that high daily consumption of these fats has been shown over time to cause heart disease." Meanwhile I am continuing to gather (and paying the grocery for) my whole foods that have caused me to lose weight and gain health -- meats, eggs, oils and dairy products.

I think I preferred the good old days of musak.

Can anybody cite the studies they are referring to , btw? I havent' been able to find one that proves dietary fat causes heart disease.

OMG! I HATE THOSE TVS! It's like you can't escape the advertisements being pushed at you. I noticed that Shell is starting to do this too, put little TVs in their gas pump and advertise at you while you're filling up.

God, I hate that nonsense. It's enough to make me NOT patronize those places.

I would write a letter to the company complaining of this nonsense, point them to Taubes' GCBC, and take my business elsewhere, making sure they know.

I've heard something similar at the supermarket, but it's more pushing the veggies rather than dissing the meat. I rarely go to the supermarket. I go to the natural foods stores (whole paycheck and its ilk) and they just play Coldplay, Hansard & Irglova, etc.

I kind of had the same reaction to the Go Red Campaign. You know, women wear a red outfit yesterday to show that you are supporting of women avoiding heart disease.

By, of course, eating low fat. I wore blue. I mean, give up my cream, my bacon, my fat, all of which has helped me lose weight?

It's also protective against heart disease. Good Calories, Bad Calories (http://www.amazon.com/Good-Calories-Bad-Controversial-Science/dp/1400033462/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234029063&sr=8-1) explains this in depth. There's also a new video out called Fathead (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B001NRY6R2/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) that explains it in a more accessible format. you can see the trailers to the movie here (http://www.fathead-movie.com/).

But is that what the American Heart Assn considers heart heathy? I thought they were all about low fat & multi grains. I may have been mistaken...

I've emailed complaint letters about another thing last year, to no effect or response.

What I think would work, is public parody. If I had the talent and the time I'd make a short parody infomercial for YouTube. Or, if a comedy tv show started poking fun at the grocery store tvs, it would spur more people to write in about it and that might have an effect. I think one person writing a letter just gets shrugged off, but a whole country laughing gets results.

anybody up for it?

Thank you for reminding me how much I hate those TV monitors. I just wrote a complaint to Albertson's and Shell about it (email off their web sites). I need to remember not to patronize those places too.

Naw, the AHA is all about keeping people in need of drugs and procedures so those big corporate donations keep rolling in. I wore green yesterday.

Yes, that's what American Heart considers healthy. Evidence against that theory is amply provided by the book I linked to above.

Yeah, we're on the same page, Allison. ;) I just don't feel like fighting the AHA. That's why I wore blue.

There are more ways to healthy than eating FrankenButter and unrecognizable yoghurts.

If they start that here I would love to do it -- if I ever get broadband out here in the sticks :p

I rarely go to the grocery stores. I like the health food stores, and Trader Joe, and one of the chains here does home delivery.

Another chain (nameless) used to do home delivery here too. One of the delivery people used to point at my minitrampoline and tell me I should spend more time on it. Well, yeah, but that's for me to decide.

Incredible! So rude, and in your own home, too.

Funny - I've now come to recognize anything with that little red heart and the words 'heart healthy' as indicators of bad food. Not kidding about this - found some turkey sausage that looked ok, and it had the 'heart healthy' advertising on the package - but the sausages contained corn syrup and corn syrup solids. Oh and high fructose corn syrup as well...nice eh?

:spin:

As for the TV's - this is where I'm really starting to appreciate the fact that I wear hearing aids. I just turn them off and shop in peace. :D

Holy crap, I would have been on the phone so fast to speak with his manager! Who the hell is he to decide you need more exercise?!

Do you know, I TWICE saw a commercial on TV *advocating* high fructose corn syrup?!?!?!?!?!?!? It said that it is just fine in moderation. I nearly fell on the floor when I saw it!

It is in fine print on the bottom of the screen for nearly a whole second. How could you miss it?
