Healthiest People in The World
Who are the healthiest people?

I've been reading in a few threads that seem to refer to the Inuit people and how they maintained good health on a diet of about 90% meat and fish. It made me start wondering; how healthy are the Inuit compared to other populations?

I’ve run across this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The important findings of the China-Cornell-Oxford Diet and Health Project further clarify the connection between dietary habits and disease:
• The healthiest people in China get only 7 to 10 percent of their protein from animal sources (meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy). Note: Americans get 70 to 80 percent of their protein from animal sources.
• Those who are genetically predisposed place themselves at risk for disease when they consume even small amounts of animal protein.
• A dietary regimen high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat (as opposed to a regimen high in refined carbohydrates, low in fiber, and high in fat) enables people to consume significantly more calories without gaining weight.
• The Chinese do not suffer from iron deficiency while consuming plant-based regimens, nor do they suffer (as do many Americans) from iron overload.
• The Chinese drastically reduce the likelihood of osteoporosis by avoiding foods high in phosphates (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, and dairy).
The rural Chinese are among the healthiest people in the world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other studies reveal that currently the healthiest people in the world live throughout the Pacific Rim, in parts of Africa and in parts of South America. What do these healthy populations have in common? What dietary habits allow them to escape most - or all - of our diseases?
The dietary habits of the healthiest people in the world have these common characteristics:
• They eat an abundance of plant-based foods, or they eat only plant-based foods.
• They consume minimally processed, seasonally fresh, locally grown foods.
• They consume little, or no, sweets.
• They eat an abundance of dietary fiber.
We need to study the dietary and lifestyle habits of the healthiest populations in order to understand what works. People who are genetically predisposed to numerous degenerative conditions manage to live their lives free of disease because they have made wise choices.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It appears that studies have not concluded that living without carbohydrates would result in optimal health…………………

Fact City 6: HEALTHIEST, LONGEST LIFESPAN CULTURES ARE VEGETARIAN - 2005/06/06 07:36
Fact City 6
Longevity and health
The cultures with the longest lifespans in the world are the Vicambas, who reside in the Andes of Ecuador, the Abkhasians, who live on the Black Sea in the former USSR, and the Hunzas who live in the Himalayas of Northern [Bharat.] [21]
Researchers discovered a striking similarity in the diets of these groups, scattered though they are in different parts of the planet. All three are either totally vegetarian or close to it. [22] The Hunzas, who are the largest of the three groups, eat almost no animal products. Meat and dairy products combined account for only 1-1/2% of their total calories.[23]
Particularly striking to researchers who have visited these cultures is that the people not only live so long, but that they enjoy full, active lives throughout their many years, and show no signs of the many degenerative diseases that afflict the elderly in our culture. `They work and play at 80 and beyond; most of those who reach their 100th birthday continue to be active, and retirement is unheard of. The absence of (excess protein) in their diets engenders slower growth and slim, compact body frames. With age, wisdom accumulates, but physical degeneration is limited so the senior citizens of these remote societies have something unique to contribute to the lives of others. They are revered.`[24] Heidelburg, 1975, page 95. [22] Hur, Robin, "Food Reform: Our Desperate Need", Heidelburg, 1975, pages 2, 95-96. [23] Leaf, A., "National Geographic", 143:93, 1973.

I'm a low carb dieter and I'm not preaching a diet of all vegetables by any means. I'm just posting these references in this "general health" forum, for not knowing what the next reference I find will be and I will post that too, be it an all protein, low-fat, whatever.....

I'm hoping to find references to healthy populations that eat a low-carb lifestyle to obtain overall good general health. If anyone reading here knows such references, please post it....

This thread is for general health searching for the lifestyles and eating habits of the healthiest populations and my intention is to let it lead where it leads... I'm not looking to argue merits of one diet over another, although my preference is moderate low-carb.

It's all in how you parse the data. Someone else with access to the China study found: Factors Correlated to Heart Attack Risk (MI)
Factor Correlation Score Significance
Meat Consumption -28 none
Dairy Consumption 6 none
Rice Consumption -58 Strong Negative Correlation
Wheat Consumption 67 Strong Positive Correlation
Other Grain Consumption 39 Moderate Positive Correlation
Green Vegetable Consumption 5 none
Blood Cholesterol 4 none

Whoah!! Did you catch that? I'll state it as plainly as I can:

The main dietary predictor of heart disease rates in China is the TYPE of grain you eat.

Rice eaters seem protected from heart attacks while wheat, corn and millet eaters are much more prone (the corn link is debatable). Meat, dairy and vegetable consumption play no obvious role. Blood cholesterol plays no role.

But we're not going to believe these statistics are we? Let's look at the raw data.
