i don't even know WHAT it is lol. do you mean stevia (i haven't tried stevia, but there are some here who use it)? i just saw a commercial on tv for stevia last week. and liquid splenda has no carbs. the carb count from powdered splenda is from the filler the use.

Its a real sweetener. www.truvia.com There is even a place to see if any stores around you carry it. Definitely going to pick it up next time I'm out, or look for stevia or liquid Splenda. We'll see!!

I don't understand the reason for the 3 carbs. I thought erythritol was almost zero carbs.

I checked it out at Safeway. 3 carbs. Didn't want to invest $4.99 in something I wasn't going to use.

It is a sugar alcohol, but supposedly it is absorbed differently than the others and is not as difficult to digest.

Erythritol, from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythritol):
In the body, erythritol is absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine, and then for the most part excreted unchanged in the urine. Because erythritol is normally absorbed before it enters the large intestine, it does not normally cause laxative effects as are often experienced after over-consumption of other sugar alcohols (such as xylitol and maltitol) and most people will consume erythritol with no side effects. This is a unique characteristic, as other sugar alcohols are not absorbed directly by the body in this manner, and consequently are more prone to causing gastric distress [3].

I've tried erythritol in cocoa bark but didn't care for the combination of coconut oil and erythritol.

I bought a box of Truvia at Winn-Dixie, then found out it had
erythritol in it. I can't eat SA at all.

I don't trust Truvia and will refuse to buy it because of the other ingredients and 'natural flavors'. I've always used the brand Sweet Leaf, it's tasty and has no carbs. http://www.sweetleaf.com/

Truvia to me seems like a big company trying to profit off of a natural ingredient, the stevia plant, but without making it a truly natrual product. (The Truvia Company is owned by Cargill, one of the top ten worst companies out there!) It worries me that the really good companies out there making honest-to-goodness stevia products will suffer..

I tried Truvia today, and I'm not impressed. I much prefer the taste of erythritol combined with Equal or Splenda or just plain erythritol.

I don't know whether you'd like it if you enjoy stevia. I'm not fond of stevia, so maybe that's the problem. I know that they've removed the bitterness, but there's still something that I don't like there.

Stevia does take some getting used to just like most other AS. Remember the first diet soda you ever had? I hated the taste at first and then really grew to like it. I liked diet soda so much it was VERY difficult to give up.

I bought a box of Truvia and tried it. It's okay. Tastes better than splenda but not quite as good sugar. Still has somewhat of a bitter taste but not as bitter as stevia however I still use stevia at home. I use it in my coffee mostly and sometimes if I am baking I'll mix it with xylitol instead of using all xylitol.

What's the thing with sugar alcohols? Are they bad for diabetics? I thought that they weren't metabolized the same way as other carbs so they were good. None of them give me diahrea but it probably takes a lot more than a sugar alcohol to do that.

(That's my situation.) If you want to spend the time searching it out online, you can find data about amount of each SA that the average person metabolizes. The only one I can remember offhand is malitol, and I believe the number for it is 50%.

If you're diabetic, then you can just sample various SAs and measure your BG at 2, 4 and 6 hours postprandial. That should tell you how you as an individual react to them. :)

I'm prediabetic. I have tested after xylitol. sugar was okay from one small piece of cheesecake. Haven't tested any other sugar alcohols.

I tried the "Trop 50" Orange Juice with Truvia. Wasn't impressed. I went back to the Minute Maid Light Orange Juice with Splenda.

We'll see how the new Truvia products like Hanson's Natural Lo-Cal Juice and True Lemon Naturally Sweet Lemonade packets turn out. Hopefully better !

Yesterday I read the nutrition stats on Truvia. Each packet contains 3 grams of carbohydrate Vs. < 1 gram in Splenda. The Truvia information is not hidden on the packaging, but certainly could be overlooked. I was using a product called Stevia In The Raw, which has < 1 gram of carbs. and I was almost fooled into buying Truvia thinking that it was the same as Stevia. Fortunately I read the label and didn't buy it. Had to settle for Splenda.

Erythritol will not have a laxative effect, no matter how much you eat. It IS a carb, but you pee most of it out. It has a GI of ZERO (no blood sugar effect whatsoever), and almost zero calories. I mix it with xylitol, for no particular reason (I just like mixing things, always have.).
It is often added to stevia to counteract the aftertaste. It is also completely natural. For more info, I suggest you try google.

Here is a chart from Emerald Forest's website:

Glycemic Index
The glycemic index is a numerical index that ranks carbohydrates on their rate of glycemic response or how quickly they convert to glucose in the body. The higher the number, the more quickly the carbohydrates break down thus causing a spike in blood sugar. (www.glycemicindex.com)

Glycemic Index of Sweeteners

1. • Erythritol 0
• Xylitol 7
• Agave Nectar 15
• Barley Malt Syrup 42
• Maple Syrup 54
• Backstrap Molasses 55
• Honey 62
• White Sugar 68
• High Fructose Corn Syrup 100
• Glucose 100

*This list is not all-inclusive.

I didn't realize this was primarily erythritol. I grabbed a box recently and was pleasantly surprised. Mixed with a little liquid splenda in my tea, this was the closest to real sugar I've tasted so far (so much so that I could almost believe it might trick my body into reacting accordingly). The packets also seem to pack a greater punch than the usual sweetener packets, so you need fewer packets.

I was not able to detect any bitterness. If anything (again, with a few drops of splenda), the sweetness nearly blew my head off in a way artificial sweeteners rarely did. I would definitely rebuy this product for convenience, easy accessibility of erythritol (I have to buy extremely expensive bags online or at whole food$), and tastiness. I think I am developing a tolerance for splenda's sweetness so I've been looking to change it up.

Yesterday I read the nutrition stats on Truvia. Each packet contains 3 grams of carbohydrate Vs. < 1 gram in Splenda. The Truvia information is not hidden on the packaging, but certainly could be overlooked.

See above, I believe the truvia packets are intended to be about 2x as sweet as typical sweetener packets.
