I was wondering if you can use Low Carb Bars when you are on the Induction part of the Diet. Also can you use them and and Shakes as a meal replacement and/or snack?

Hi Miistii, welcome aboard. Theoritically you can, since you have a small budget of carbs, about 20g. However, you might want to hold off on these products for several reasons.
After a week on induction, you might actually lose interest in them (I no longer crave chocolates, and it owned me for a long time!) or no longer crave them as much.
It is possible that taking these products so soon, may actually increase your craving and cause a stall in weight loss. If you are new to low-carbing, it's is better to do it by the book for a while, and later on adjust it to your own after you learn how your body reacts.
Hope this helps,
Wa'il

Thank you for your help,
I am not really new to the plan I have been on it before. Than I got pregnant and went off it. I am pregnant again but my girlfreind is too and she has diabietes due to the pregnancy and she was told to limit her carb intake so I figure it isn't that bad being on the diet. But with the new products out I was just wondering if it was ok to start again but this time with the bars and shakes. Thanks for your help

:) Hi, Miistii, welcome to the board!
I'm no expert on this, but from information I've gleaned from other boards, it's recommended that women who are pregnant do a "modified" low carb that doesn't put you into ketosis. I think this is recommended by the Atkins Centre. I'd check it out, if I were you. It might be a bit of a "shock" to the wee one to drastically change your way of eating at this point.
Just my humble opinion!

hi Miistii,
I discussed lowcarbing and pregnancy in response to your post in the Health Issues forum, click here to read it (http://www.lowcarber.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3840). It's strongly advised that you not severely restrict carbs during pregnancy, and Induction level is DEFINITELY too low. Ketosis can be harmful to the baby.
The lowcarb protein shakes would be ideal to use as between meal snacks or quick breakfast / lunch. Just make sure they're not sweetened with aspartame or sugar (fructose). Add a handful of berries, a heaped Tbsp ground flax seeds and a little yogurt to blend into a smoothie .... the carb count will still be low enough, and the berries and flax will add fiber!! :)
The protein bars should be ok to use once in a while, again make sure there's no aspartame used to sweeten. Also, some of the bars are sweetened with glycerin, which doesn't raise insulin levels, but it definitely has carbs (the labels are false if they don't count it as a carb). There's no evidence that glycerin is harmful in any way, but it has been known to cause fluid retention. Especially since you'll be in your third trimester during the heat and humidity of summer, this might not be a good thing to happen.
A better snack choice would be real food, like raw veggies, some cold meat, tuna, hard-boiled eggs or a piece of cheese.
Take care, and keep us posted how you're doing .. :)

Miistii....I too was diabetic when I was pregnant....something my Doctor took very seriously. I would not do anything without his/her approval... I had blood tests once a week (three times a day) and I had to do insulin every morning. They were very concerned how big my baby would get. I had an ob, family dr., a specialist who looked about my "sugar problem". In the end, I was breach (always swore it was because I never had enough sugar in my system to make my daughter move!!!)...and I was overdue and they ended up inducing me. I remember I was on 2400 calories a day..(and a diabetic diet) ...to me at the time it seemed a lot of food I was trying to eat.. The carbs I eat when I was pregnant are different carbs than the ones I eat for a low carb way of life.. I ate a lot of fruit and juice, even a piece of bread with peanut butter. ....I had 6 small meals a day. My advice would be, tell your girlfriend to listen to her Dr....hopefully he'll/she'll give her the same concern and care I was given.
