I'm at 15 1/2 weeks now, and I think I'm supposed to have gained 5 pounds by now -- well I've definitely put on at least 10 and I absolutely know it has nothing to do with the baby.

Since finding out about this pregnancy, I've turned into a ravenous, out of control carb eater!! I know I should not be doing this and vow every day to get it under control, but I just can't seem to stop it!! Is anyone else in this boat?

Huh, its the whole craving problem, right? bouts of carb cravings can be related to lowered serotonin levels, but what can you do about that when you are pregnant? if you weren't pregnant I would say try 5-htp, which is a tremendous help to myself at the moment.

If it were me, and it might be me in the future, I would remove those offending carbs from the house, and keep some low-carb snacks around. Plus some berries. Straw berries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. I would also take a good gram of tryptophan per day and see what that does. L-tryptophan is just an amino acid. The body converts it to 5-htp which then gets converted to serotonin. Conversion of L-tryptophan to 5-htp is an enzyme controlled step whose rate is under strict control by your body's needs. Any L-tryptophan that the body doesn't want to convert to 5-htp gets used to make proteins or is used for energy, so it won't harm your baby. However, should your body be craving serotonin and is making you eat carbs in order to get it, that extra L-tryptophan might be of great help in addressing the problem.

Thank you for the great ideas -- now I just need to get myself to implement them!

you can get L-tryptophan at GNC or just about any vitamin store in the states, if you are interested in that.

Wow! 5 pounds after 15 weeks? I thought it was 25-35 pounds for an entire pregnancy. That means 10 pounds doesn't sound too bad. Sadly, I've gained 7 and I"m only 10 weeks. But I count Kit Kats as a craving. I think you're doing great!!!!!

Here is a chart I found on the net, at 10 pounds for 15 weeks (almost 16) you are still within range (on the high end, but still).

Chart (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-11/1114507/weight_chart.gif)

Just be careful with those cravings! :)

But the rate of weight gain is supposed to increase as you go along and that might be what the doctor would say, but none of that matters. Just the extra fluid alone could account for 5-7 pounds of that 10 pounds.

Don't worry too much about your weight..... at the end of your pregnancy the total weight gain is suppose to be about 28-30 lbs. (includes blood, water, xtra fat for birth, boobs, etc.). I gainned inches during the first 2 trimesters and lost weight! Only to gain 30 lbs in the last trimester (didn't change anything about my eating habits). I had already gained about three inches by the time I was 6 weeks! Although Before I found out ~5 weeks I had been wondering why in the world my jeans were getting so little in the waist  I read somewhere if you crave something sweet you should eat something sour and vice versa. It hinted that when our bodies crave sweets it (our body) needs somthing that can be found in trace amounts in sweets but in higher amounts in sour foods. The same goes for craving sour foods. Can't remember where I read it though

Is this your first child? I have a two year old.

I was VERY blessed and was never sick (nauses -- yes) and felt wonderful throughout my whole pregnancy. The problem was, being my first child, I gave myself too many liberties and gained 70 lbs!

I lost 40 lbs within the first 6 weeks following delivery -- so basically 30 lbs was just me overeatting. I am now just getting motivated to get it off -- plus the other weight I was trying to lose before getting pregnant.

I guess what I am saying is a little opposite of everyone else. Yes -- be concerned about what you are gainning, but talk with your Dr. about what to do.

With my second (which we are trying for) I am planning to be more on top of what I eat. I am a little nervous about continuing LC though and thus the reason I'm checking things out now. Your Dr. will be able to give you the best direction.

Good Luck and Best Wishes.

Thanks all, I'm still gaining much more than I want, but I know I am eating way too much. Can't seem to stop and I've been atrocious with carbs as well.

So far so good in terms of the pregnancy, can't believe next week it will be 6 months already!!

I tried to be really careful with my 2nd child..I gained the recommended 25lbs and it flew off post pregnancy.

I survived on grapes. They helped with the carb cravings and nausia..

Once I got into my second trimester and felt better, I ate a healthy, modified low carb diet and made sure I got plenty of fat. The fat kept me from overeating.

Well, I haven't been on the scale for a while and today I got the courage to get back on. Up to 181. That's 24 pounds gained in 23 weeks of pregnancy. Unless I don't gain a single pound more for the whole pregnancy I will definitely blow past the 25 pound recommended weight gain -- i guess I'm tracking to gain more like 50 if I keep this up.

For some reason I have let go and have been allowing myself to eat sugary things (donuts, brownies, cookies) on top of carbs (bagels, breads, pasta and rice) -- and as the addict I know I am, I get out of control with portions. It seems fun while I'm indulging, but I already regret this weight gain.

This morning I've had several slices of turkey bacon (I know, I shouldn't be having the nitrates) and decaf coffee and trying to work up the courage to get back to being better at lowering my carbs, yet eating healthily (lots of veggies and small amounts of fruit along with protein and fats). Once I get on 'sugar' it's so hard to say goodbye to it!

I saw a study somewhere (I think on Eades blog) that overindulgence on carbs while pregnant damages your baby's pancreas. The damage makes them have trouble with insulin and greatly increases the chances that they will be overweight.

I did this to my daughter 10 years ago and although she is still slim...I know she is carb sensitive and will have to be extra careful her whole life.

Don't do this to you or your baby. It is so easy to not worry about it during pregnancy. It is the moms that worry and are watchful that gain appropriate amounts. You will regret it if you don't. Be extra vigilent.

Hopefully that motivates you. Try and imagine how you will feel if you have to watch this child you are carrying struggle with weight their whole life because you thought it was too hard to not eat sugar.

I say this is tough love....not to be mean, because I know what you really want is to get back on track.

There are lots of places online to see a general idea of how much one should gain start to finish but is there a place where it says "if you're 5'3 and 4 months pregnant you should weigh about X"?

Malishka31
Sun, Dec-14-08, 09:48
I wouldnt worry too much, you arent really going to have cravings the whole pregnancy- at least most people do not.

Your second trimester is usually the one that balances you out and the weight gain should subside and then pick up again in the third trimester.

I couldnt eat anything at all during the 1st trimester- not because of MS but i just didnt want to. I literally only ate oranges and tangerines. Lost 25 pounds, then second and third trimster I gained about 55 by the end of it- when i came home after delivery i was about 5 pounds overweight from starting weight, it really is all relative, you could gain like 10 + pounds of water easily in the end too.

Just try to eat healthy and not look at the scale.

Want2Bskny, I am in exactly the same position as you. I'm also due in early April and have majorly fallen off the low carb wagon.

I love carbs but every time I eat them I end up feeling lethargic and tired but knowing this hasn't made it any easier to stop. It's always tomorrow.

The last 2 days I've managed to get on top of it somewhat. I'm still eating small amounts of carbs at lunch and dinner but I'm feeling a lot better. The after lunch slump has finally left and for me this is motivating enough to continue.

I've gained much much more than I should have, I think about 25 pounds. I'm hoping to curtail the extra weight gain and just put on baby weight from here on.

I wish you well and hope you find the balance you're looking for, perhaps we can be of encouragement to each other both on and off "the wagon".

I hesitate to write here bc i have decided not to do an LC pregnancy (but have kept up my journal as my personal overall life journal and have focused more on moderation of food groups the last year, although did SB before that). I guess what drives me here right now, is i have had a reality check with how much i am gaining, so i can really relate to the discussion here. I lost 10 pounds quite quickly (6-8 weeks) before my wedding in late Sept, then gained 7 back quickly with wedding and 2 weeks all inclusive honeymoon, then was pregnant. SO starting from there (157), i gained only about 2 in first 12 weeks (although went up in sizes), but then another 8 these last 4 weeks. SO that is 10 from the beginning and yikes, 17, from wedding. I know it is mostly from what i am eating as i am allowing myself to eat whatever i want and have not had major cravings nor ravenous hunger, although i think that is starting this week. I need to reflect on what, if anything, i will do about this. I am comfortable eating starch in all or most meals and snacks, and i have balanced food groups (at first, the starch helped nausea, but it is more that i just enjoyed eating it - no strong cravings yet). What bothers me more is the sugary desserts i have been eating - daily - sometimes more than once. I feel i should get a handle on this for my and baby'S health and for more reasonable gain (as i know it will be harder to lose later), but i also associate 'enjoying the pregnancy' with eating what i want. I guess what i have come to is that i need to make a mild effort, as in cut down the sweets (even a little) for my health, but otherwise high C is ok with me (i already knew that). Not sure why i am writing here, but the worry of the gain this week lead me here. I don'T feel the need for advice, but wanted to process a bit of this recent gain and share where i am at, maybe so Want2Bskny doesn'T feel alone.

Congratulations to all those preggies out there.....and to all those who have your babies!!

Good luck with what you each decide is healthiest for you to do during this time.

Yes, I also found sweets to be a big problem but for me it was also the massive servings of rice, pasta etc that was contributing to a huge weight gain and a general feeling of malaise. I am not on a specific low carb plan but I have certainly cut back on my carb consumption over the last 2 days. I cannot believe how much better I feel.

I'm eating a lot more carbs than when I was actively trying to lose weight but much less than when I'd thrown it all to the wind. I'ts great to start feeling human again and as I said before, I hope this leads to a more healthy weight gain. After all, I'll only have to lose it all once bub is born.

To each their own and good luck to all :)

No worries, everybody is different when it comes to weight gain, cravings, and your body's needs. We're all the same in that we want a healthy baby (or babies). I have abandoned low carbing to a degree. I choose brown rice and 12 grain bread if I eat them, and stick with berries instead of bananas. Just as an example. But then I'll go wild and eat a plate of brownies. Last night at midnight I found myself making potato salad because I was craving vinegar.

I am up to having gaine about 16 pounds and I'm 21 weeks. Not the best, but not the worst. I never got morning sickness, never lost the cravings thing. So I'm not shocked that I've gained. But you know what? I'm pregnant. If baby wants yellow mustard on a boiled potato, so what! I'm not eating it everyday, or every week. Same with my brownies issue. We're all supposed to gain, we're supposed to make smart decisions, and we're all supposed to enjoy the moment and love life while we're creating and nuturing it. I won't feed my toddler a plate of brownies, so don't go there :) But I will live.

Like you Aprils0909, I never had any major morning sickness, if anything I felt nauseous from not eating, so weight gain started early.

I also agree, we all want healthy babies and everyone has to eat in such a way as they feel best.

I have to admit, my weakness for a time was almond magnum icecreams. They are vanilla icecream covered in the most delicious thick milk chocolate covered in slivered almonds. I had to give them up because of the way I was starting to feel but they were soooo good. :yum:

Interesting to read what everyone is doing. I guess i was a little hesitant coming back here, wondering if i would be judged for what i wrote about higher C eating. But i am happy to see that everyone is very respectful of each other'S choices and seem to be enjoying processing together!

I agree, that the fundamental base, is about having a healthy baby, and secondly for me, enjoying this beautiful process. Having had a miscarriage not long ago, relatively late (May 26th at one day before 12 weeks we found out, although had happened at some point earlier), it puts in perspective about what really matters.

Aprils0909, I remember reading from a couple of sources that when you start out thin like you, then you do need to gain more than others. I know it is all individual, but i do remember that notion that the thinner person needs to gain more and the heavier person, less.

After writing that post the other day, i then felt a bit more worried the next day about my gain, as i suddenly have started feeling more hungry; i know this is healthy and fine, it'S just that i was already gaining from pure pleasure eating so now with the increased hunger and my association of eating what i want as much as i want = enjoying the pregnancy......yikes! I am happy not to be on any specific plan, but i would like to make some healthier efforts. I was slightly better last week with less desserts, although still lots starch, and more fruit, veg and yogurt (which had been unappealing much of first trimester). Getting enough water is still a challenge.

Good luck everyone!

Thanks Latte. I have officially gained 20 pounds. I'm hoping that it'll sink a by a pound or two before reporting it on the forum. I'm 22 weeks and frustrated with my consumption. I am so swollen and sore and stretched out. It's all in my belly. I hate it! I am also waaaaaaaaay constipated. I ate a whole container of prunes, nothing! Hi all,
Sorry I've been away -- we just returned from a week's vacation to Cancun Mexico, where we stayed at an all inclusive. All I will say is, in my jealousy of everyone else drinking yummy alcoholic pool drinks and cocktails, I completely resorted to food. I did not deny myself a thing and came back 4 pounds heavier in one week -- I'm sure having nothing to do with the pregancy.

I think I get the record of the most weight gain here -- I'm pretty sure I'm up 29 pounds and at almost 28 weeks pregant -- way over the normal "high" of weight gain.

I have been much better since I got back, and the 4 vacation pounds are back off -- hard to get a grip on my eating though.

My new attitude is to work on moderation and focus on healthy foods sticking mainly to salads, veggies, fats, fruits and very moderate carbs.

Hope everyone is feeling okay!

I realize this is an old thread but found it helpful. Last Spring/Summer I knocked off 65Lbs. doing Atkins then the remaining year I found my CCL and maintained that weight. I just found out I'm 6 weeks pregnant, my last weigh-in in November I was still 197Lb. then at the doctors today I weighed in at 215Lb. I almost crapped my pants. In one week alone I gained 5Lbs. And it's those darn carb cravings that's getting me. Toast and anything I bake (or wanna bake cuz I WANT it) is putting extra pounds on me. Now I seriously wanna go back to Induction, maybe not strict Induction but I wonder if I should really enforce the vegetables and protein to combat these cravings, as I'm not taking any supplements to help my seretonin levels. If I did that how will that affect the baby? My concern is ketones, will the ketones affect my baby?

want2Bskny
Wed, Jan-14-09, 14:44
That's a good question. I have no idea and wish I knew too. I believe on Atkins, they say to stay at Maintenance during pregnancy -- so maybe stick to 60 to 90gms of carb??

Yes I did some more reading and found helpful answers, as for ketosis, seems as though any physician/nutritionist/dietician will tell you it's "bad for the baby" but good ol fashioned common-sense will tell you it can't be that bad. I think it's ones own judgement, perhaps I'll see where 50g. gets me, or at least slow down this crazy weight gain that I feel there's no need for. Could be that I just quit smoking once I found out....hormones and withdrawal can't be the best combo for combating carbs, lol we'll see.

HI All!

APRils0909, sorry to hear about the constipation. I have been having bran flakes and granola most days and a little figs to try and prevent that - no problem yet, but i know i don'T drink enough water. Sorry to hear that you are feeling bad about the weight gain........but it'S great that it'S all in your tummy, as many others gain all over. Good luck.

Want2bskny, hope you had a great vacation. I can totally understand about the all-inclusive. We went to one on honeymoon for 2 weeks (near Cancun too - isn'T it beautiful?) at beginning of Oct (where i got pregnant in the middle). I also totally enjoyed the food all the time and gained 7 pounds in 2 weeks (i think it was more, then maybe came off a bit in a day or 2). ANyway, when i weighed a couple days after coming back and knowing pregnant, it was 7 pounds since wedding. I have now gained 12 since that and know it will be more fast, since i won'T exercise in the next 2.5 weeks after amnio yesterday and still eating lots. Would like to get the desserts more under control, but it'S hard - keep buying them. Otherwise, i'm ok wiht starch in all meals and lots of snacks, although one small effort i thought of to balance out all the eating, is one low-moderate C meal per day - did it once. My focus right now is more on my sanity after amnio yesterday, which seems to have gone well so far, but very scared about results since they saw something in ultrasound that increases chance of Down'S or some chromosome abnormality ( to 1/650 chance). Trying to focus on positive that that is still better than the average risk at my age. SO surviving while i await results and hoping for healthy results are my primary concern now.

Good luck all and congratulations to GOodbye 262 and algts!

No real cravings yet (wish i could use that to justify all the sweets, but i can'T). Actually am going to make a small effort to have some LC dinners in order to help my DH who wants to lose weight (so he's less tempted), although i won'T always be having them. And i will continue my starches in all other meals and many snacks.......but i figure it is nice to help him since he always ate whatever i had when i was trying to lose weight and also, it might balance out all the starch. But i am also very used to starch now in every meal so we'll see how it works - not worry about it much.

Aprils0909, good luck with the constipation!!!

Ladies I am like a yoyo when it comes to my eating. Just when I think I'm top of it, I come crashing down into a plate of something carbaliscious. Last time I talked about how I had reduced my carbs, this time I'm back where I was.

I find it hard because I am not strictly low carbing while pregnant and as such find it hard to find the right balance. I love my carbs (which was the whole problem in the first place). I guess I just need to stop stressing and just deal with the pregnancy.

Latte I'm so sorry about the ultrasound. I hope it turns out as just a scare and nothing else. I do know of many women who were told they had a particularly high risk of Down's (much much higher than yours) only to give birth to perfectly healthy babies without Down's. Stay strong.

Aprils0909 you must be happy to be going home. I'm assuming you'll be closer to family.

Hi Algts, congratulations on your pregnancy.

Goodbye262, I agree common sense tells me it would be ok to be in ketosis but personally, for myself, I don't want to take the chance. As you said, each person has to make their own decision. I would agree that lowering carbs as opposed to strict low carb eating can only be a good thing. I'm just finding it hard to be consistent.

Want2bskny, I think your new attitude is great. That's exactly how I want to be eating. I need to work on doing it daily and not on and off. Sometimes it's hard when I feel tired and heavy to organise a healthy meal for 2 kids and a husband. My problem is not being organised enough.

Oh well... healthy pregnancies to all.

But everyone is telling me how great and healthy I look, feeling sheepish about admitting I've gained over 30 pounds with 11 more weeks to go. want2bskny, I think the greatest motivation will come once we've had our babies. It's hard to really stick to a tight eating regime when we know we will gain weight anyway plus there is another life to take into account.

I guess the next thing will be establishing our milk supplies for breastfeeding (for those who are choosing to breastfeed).

Latte, when do you get your final results?

Aprils0909, I feel for you, sooo frustrating! I'm surprised the Indian didn't do it for you. Really spicy food always works for me but I usually add an excessive amount of hot chilli. I've had to cut back because of the morning side effects :p

Hi Ladies!

My amnio results should be in about another week, thanks Mermaidan for asking. I took a few days break from daily desserts last week and it did seem to have effect of my maintaining for one week instead of gaining 2-2.5 each week, as i have been the last while. But alas, the sugar addiction returns so easily and back to daily desserts. I know i'll care later (bc at this rate my total gain will me minimum 55-60 pounds!) but i don't seem to care enough now to do much about it.......we'll see, bc it does worry me but i am enjoying this.

Take care all,

I am new to this as a pregnant woman, but lets just say that i've gained my fair share. Started ~ 166 and am now 191.2. I've been watching what I eat, mostly trying to eat low-carb (ish) but it's been so difficult. I can't wait until I am breastfeeding & can truly do low carb & actually see results. Earlier this year I was down to 141 & I really want that body back!

I wish I had been one of those women who breast fed and lost tons of weight because of the breast feeding alone, but unfortunately for me, breast feeding did not seem to help me lose any :(

I did actually do low carb while breast feeding and it didn't seem to have any effect on my production of milk in any negative way. There might be something to look out for if you are super low carb, and in deep ketosis -- maybe that might do something to the milk, but I'm not really certain.

My plan is do low carb while breastfeeding once this baby comes in 10 weeks!!

I have succumbed to my cravings. Pizza and popcorn have been my latest obsession. I am at Cosi now and am seriously forcing myself away from one of their flatbread or bagel sandwiches. RESTRAINT!!!!!!

I am anemic so I am trying to crave iron, but it's hard to do when I see such deliciousness surrounding me.

Status of weight:

4 weeks, 112.5 lbs
24 weeks, 131 lbs

Yea, I know :(

I just spoke with my DR. and he said that doing low-carb can lower the milk production & you need carbs for it. But what I'm thinking is I wasn't clear that I will be eating carbs, just not breads & chips. I think when people here low-carb they think that you don't eat any. We do, just complex good ones! Like veggies & grains.

Several of us seem in the same boat with weight gain. April, my stats are
-4 weeks: 157
-20 weeks: 173.6

so close to 20 pounds also and i had jsut gained a fast 7 in the 2 weeks prior to 4 week weigh, on my honeymoon, so it'S fast! I understand about temptations, as I'm back to my HUGE daily desserts...........forgetting about dealing with all that weight later for a minute, I'm starting to worry about causing gestational diabetes........again, my only realistic goal that I'm considering attempting, is trying to have the sugary desserts every second day instead of every day! I accept that i will have lots of starch in most meals and snacks - I,m OK with that.

Can'T answer the breast feeding question since this is the first newborn i will have. But i had a similar question about if it is healthy to do lower carb (i guess mine might be considered more moderate with SB) when breast feeding. I don'T think I'll feel comfortable doing a stricter phase (Phase 1 - no fruit or starch, but still dairy), but Phase 2 allows fruit, dairy and some starch. ALthough, to be honest, for about the 9 months before pregnancy, i had gone to more moderation of food groups and not LC, so we'll see - that might end up being better for me.

Good luck all!

Okay ladies, so just had my 29th week weigh in...gained 7 lbs. I'm not sure how I feel. On one hand, I'm almost 200lbs...which just doesn't seem real/possible to me...but on the other hand I don't look 200lbs except in my belly. So i'm conflicted on how i should feel lol.

I've been walking when the weather is good & there isn't snow on the ground. I usually am really motivated for the first 2 weeks after a weigh in then horrible & put on like 5 lbs in the next 2 weeks before the dr. apt. AHH! lol.

Is this weird? I'm not actually nervous about taking the weight off, I know if i lc i can do it, i'm just don't like it now and I can't go to extremes to take it off.

mermaiden9
Fri, Feb-06-09, 15:03
Bella we are all in the same boat. We know the weight will come off later but we all want a healthy gain not the crazy out of control gain some of us feel we are experiencing.

It's hard because we do have to gain some weight. I know that I'm gaining more than I should and it sometimes gets to me and I manage to reign it all in for a short time.

My other concern is I know lots of carbs are not good for my health, yet I am inconsistent with my eating patterns. I wonder if this is even worse.

mermaiden9
Fri, Feb-06-09, 15:10
I'm impressed that you're walking, I am only exercising by running around after my other 2 and keeping the house in some semblance of order.

The other issue is we are going through a heat wave over here. Definitely not wise to go out in, but in all honesty, I wasn't doing it anyway.

bella_meow
Fri, Feb-06-09, 18:19
A heat wave? Man, I'm jealous. Well not really, but it snowed this morning. I can't wait for the warmer weather. Last summer this was me...ciggs, wine, good book, blanket, outside most of the day tanning! This summer...baby, good book, water, blanket, and tanning! What a change that'll be!

Sometimes I feel great about how I look, other days not so much. I hate that i get down at all about it ya know? I get sad, then I get sad that I'm sad about it. HAHA, vicious cycle I suppose.

I wonder about inconsistency also. I'll either eat really healthy...salad, lean meats or not healthy at all. Wonder if it helps or makes us gain easier when we eat the not healthy. Who knows?

Glad you ladies are here to talk to. When is everyone due? We can get some challenges going once our babies are in the world!

Fri, Feb-06-09, 22:07
We've had temperatures around 109 give or take a few degrees for around 10 days now. I'm seriously over the extreme heat but I can't stand the cold. I guess there's always something to complain about :)

Lots of April new babies! I'm due April 9.

I've had a very weird week. I was laid off from work on Thursday after working at the company for 4 years. Not a total surprise, but nonetheless, I feel slightly in shock about the whole thing. We have a lot of new things to figure out (i.e. health insurance, day care changes, less money).

I loved that job and working but now I guess I have more time to wait for the baby -- who the heck is going to hire me at almost 8 months pregnant anyway -- and spend more time with my two little girls (ages 4 and 2).

My eating has been atrocious -- I am a stress eater on top of all this pregnancy eating. Why do I always resort back to chocolate?!!!

We are also in the process of buying a house for the first time, and so now nervous about the lesser income, but I think it will be okay. I just need to find a new job as soon as possible.

Yes, this is my first baby. We're so thrilled. I just ordered my baby bedding today, and got a great deal on it! I'm excited. I've decided that this month I am going to eat basically low-carb, but with added dairy & fruit. So basically a good diet all month. That way if I still gain a bazillion lbs I'll know it was baby! lol. I can't believe our little ones will be here soon

HI Ladies!

First, Bella Meow, i say enjoy not being nervous about the weight and that most of it seems to be in your tummy! We need to enjoy ALL positive moments about our bodies whenever we can, right? I also have moments where i feel a little down about the fast weight gain (and clearly from daily huge desserts on top of starch in jsut about all meals), but many many times where i jsut feel wonderful with the belly (even if gain elsewhere too) bc of the magic of this being true. I still can'T believe I,m pregnant and want to enjoy it as much as i can. I am 21 weeks this Tues coming. It'S going so fast.

Right now, more focused on anxiety about baby health since we are still waiting for amnio results; they said it takes about 3 weeks which was last THurs, then said early this week. ANy thoughts and prayers appreciated.

Wantbskny, sorry to hear about your job situation - that is so stressful. My DH also jsut lost his job - not great. One day at a time.

Can'T wait to start having more obvious baby movements; i have had a bubble burst feeling and some slight flutters, but it is never certain.

GOod luck everyone!

Is this your first too? I love feeling Addison move around in there, it's amazing. Right now, everyone I know *or seems like it* is dieting & losing weight. I swear I am always dieting, but not now, and wanting partners & now they do it?? lol. Whatever.

My sister just lost 18lbs & i'm so happy for her. She loses weight SO slowly even on low carb & I'm glad she is able to see the light! Plus, it'll give me more motivation to be skinnier than her, i've never been bigger than her in my life, but i am now! lol.

Latte, sounds like the bubble burst feeling and slight flutters are definitely movements! How exciting to first feel movement! Stronger feelings will come very soon.

(This little one inside me seems to be doing karate chops, or likes to kick alot! Right now, lots of movements in a row. Much more than my previous pregnancies!!).

Sometimes, they can even get the hiccups inside of you, which also feels very strange, but fun!!

Since my layoff, I have lost a bit of my appetite, which might be one of the blessings in disguise everyone is telling me this layoff is. I seem to be down two pounds. But still, I'm up 33 pounds in almost 32 weeks.

Hello lovely ladies

Good to hear your pregnancies are progressing well. Let me just tell you, all in all I've gained around 30lbs. Funny thing is everyone keeps telling me I look good. I guess no one is going to tell me I look like crap. :p

Latte, those flutters will turn into major kicks before you know it and then you'll begin to wonder if you have an olympic athlete in there. Also I am keeping you in prayer for positive amnio results, I can't imagine what you must be going through. I think the hardest part must be the uncertainty of not knowing.

Want2bskny, I'm sorry to hear about the job loss. I realise how upsetting this must be but I'm glad to hear you trying to look for positives. It's an added stress you just didn't need right now and finding the good from the situation will help you get through (that and some chocolate:D ).

I know your concerned about weight gain but I hope you get your appetite back soon. You and your bub need your nutrients. Take care:bhug:

Bella, this is technically my 4th. I say technically because my eldest is 17 and out on her own. My other two are 4.5yrs and almost 3yrs, they are all girls. This will be my last and... he's a boy!!!!!

edited to add:
I almost forgot, I found this interview with Dr Atkins.

http://www.power-surge.com/transcripts/atkins.htm

If you scroll down just a little you will find this:

Audience: Is your diet safe to use while breastfeeding a newborn? Or
should I wait until she is weaned?

Dr. Robert Atkins: The diet is quite safe for breastfeeding; however, weight
loss will be painfully slow beca because of the hormones involved in supporting
breastfeeding.

Hi Ladies!

Mermaiden9, thanks so much for your prayers about amnio; i have goosebumps thinking of that and as much as I,m not religious, i am spiritual and to do believe that positive thoughts from far away, even from someone i don't know, can make a difference. SO thank-you.

Bella, this will be my first baby, but not my first pregnancy; i had a miscarriage (confirmed one day before 12 weeks) last May. IT is really exciting to experience each phase and i get more and more relaxed, as i pass each milestone. The flutters are so exciting, but are so slight, that i wonder if it is my heart or baby movements, but everyone seems to think it'S baby, which i love (thanks to all of you for ressaurances about that). TOday was really nice at work, bc suddenly i felt 3-4 flutters in a row and just while i sat at desk, not while lying down with hands on belly really focused on it. Felt so nice bc sometimes i get anxiety about risk of squishing baby from certain positions that cause pressure on stomach, but everyone seems to reassure that he/she is well protected.

Want2bskny, hope you get your appetite back soon and you get some good coping with stress.

Take care all,

Latté

Bella, i will know the sex with the amnio results, which I,m hoping will be tomorrow when i go for 21 week ultrasound at the same hospital. It will be 4 weeks tomorrow since amnio. THat is so nice about the first kick. I was in the bath too, speaking to baby when i felt first movement, which was like a big bubble bursting. You're having a girl?

Latté

bella_meow
Fri, Feb-13-09, 09:32
Yes a little girl, we're naming her Addison Taylor :) She's already spoiled!

I failed my first 1 hr glucose test. Honestly, I knew I would. My dad had diabetes REALLY bad, i was 15-20 lbs overweight before i got pregnant, and I just had a feeling. I'd be surprised if I pass the 3-hr.

I'm kinda nervous now. I know I need to cut the carbs then almost altogether, but every book advises to AVOID ketosis all together when you're pregnant. How is that possible if I'm low-carbing? I'm confused :q:

mermaiden9
Fri, Feb-13-09, 15:00
Bella -I failed my first glucose for my 2nd child but just made it in the top of charts for my fasting blood. That was when I knew very little about low carbing.

As for ketosis, you will only be in ketosis if you drop your carbs to very low levels. If you just reduce them to lower levels you will be fine. Lets say, cut out sweets and maybe start the day with a lower carb breakfast and slowly add them throughout the day as your body adjusts. From my understanding, we are most sensitive in the morning.

The jury is out on the dangers of ketosis during pregnancy. The only studies done that I know of (and I could be wrong) was done on rats. It wouldn't be ethical to do it on real pregnant women IYKWIM so no one has done so. Some say it's safe and others say there is a risk to the developing brain.

Funny thing is ketosis is present during any weight loss as it's the body using fat for fuel rather than glucose. To me this would suggest that it couldn't be harmful as there are women in countries and situations that have no choice but to limit their food who would most certainly be in a state of ketosis at different times during their pregnancy. The human body is an amazing machine.

None the less, I'm like you, if there is any risk whatsoever to the health and well being of my unborn child, I will not test it.

If you have any concerns you can always test with keto sticks but if you're eating fruit and small servings of wholegrains you most certainly will not be in ketosis.

Latte - please keep us posted on your situation.

Want2Bskny - I hope all is well for you and your appetite has returned.

I had another ultrasound yesterday, they are keeping a close eye on me as I almost had a uterine rupture with my last baby.

Because this is my first boy after 3 girls, the sonographer found great amusement in handing my husband a picture of the baby's 'willie'. I now have proof!

I'm counting down now 7 weeks and 4 days to go - hurray

Hi Girls!

Bella, sorry to hear about the glucose test. You really make me think of my situation since there are 3 people with diabetes in my family (on the side i tend to take after) and i started overweight and am eating lots of sweets - yikes. Been in conscious denial about it but it makes me worried. Addison Taylor is really nice name!

Still no amnio results; started to make me a little crazy yesterday, when i was at hospital and found out that they are still not ready at lab - had a nice little cry. But then got back to a positive outlook and feeling really really lucky, since we had a lot of reassurances yesterday. DId a 21 week ultrasound and they did tons of measurements and all was normal. Very reassuring bc they had not been able to see everything in heart and brain at 17 weeks, but now they could. So great, and was really special to see the baby moving around in there.

Mermaidan, glad to hear that they are keeping a close eye on you. Is all going well so far?

Good luck girls. OH, we still couldn'T find out sex bc baby had legs close together. Last time, they were crossed! SO this baby wants to surprise us! But we will find out with amnio.

I really hope I pass my 3 hr test, but I think either way this is a wake up call, I can't eat like a pig & not suffer from it. I don't want to get diabetes later in life either so, the time is now. Latte~yah! Good deal. Names?

I go for my 3 hr test on Monday & am trying to eat good and lower carb this week. Well, i'm going to try to do it all month, but I'm going to take it one week ~ a time. So far I haven't gained any weight since last appointment on the 5th so I hope I can keep it up. I usually do good up until that week of the appointment! Go figure huh?

Am annoyed at night, can't get comfortable no matter what & am just not sleeping good!

mermaiden9
Wed, Feb-18-09, 14:45
Funny you should mention not sleeping well. I just got up from another night of mulitiple visits to the toilet and an ongoing struggle for comfort. Even the pillow I'm using doesn't seem to offer much help anymore <sigh>

Hope your test is within normal limits. Let us know how you go.

I've been eating better as well. I eat a lower carb (not strict ow carb) breakfast and lunch but sometimes dinner has a small amount of starch, such as rice or pasta. I'm happy with that, It seems to be working for me at this point.

As long as I stick with this I feel alright, problems only arise when I stray from it and then my whole day is off.

I've found that if I start my day with a lot of carbs, I end up foggy and lethargic. It's not good when you have 2 other little ones to chase around. I guess I can only do my best. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Bella, taking a week at time is a good idea. I have to focus on each day as it comes. Once we have given birth and are at an established place of comfort in our breastfeeding, we can go back to induction levels - for those planning to do so anyway.

Aprils0909, that's great. I understand the nesting instinct, mine has kicked in big time. I'm even cleaning around light switches with toothpicks :o (I know- I know, getta life right lol). Only problem is my energy levels are not consistent.

Must be great to be home and settled though.

Has anyone else found themselves cleaning and nesting more than usual?

Take care everyone

I go for my 3 hr test on Monday & am trying to eat good and lower carb this week. Well, i'm going to try to do it all month, but I'm going to take it one week ~ a time. Remember what Dr. Atkins says in his book about how many carbs to eat before your GTT, I think it's something like 150 grams per day, otherwise if you're too low carb right before the test, your body doesn't really know how to handle the carbs and you will get unfavorable (and not accurate) results.
Am annoyed at night, can't get comfortable no matter what & am just not sleeping good! I am not there yet, but have been and really feel for you!

Welcome back to the States April :)

Bella, definitely speak to the Dr., and you might want to look at the stress you are under too and I know that contributes a lot to physical back pain in most cases. You have a new baby coming, the glucose test, and I'm sure much much more stress than you even realize. Lots of stress your brain is dealing with, and sometimes that comes out in a physical way in our bodies. There is a great book on Healing Back Pain by John Sarnow that might help as well if it gets worse (without using drugs).

Talk about nesting (and stress!), we are moving to a new house this week -- lots of work to do!! But I can't wait to move.

HI Everyone!

THank-you so much for sharing in my great news; i really appreciate all the congrats and warmth! Still can'T believe it is true and that we are so so blessed that all is well with the little woman. Yes, we have one main name we have really liked from the beginning but haven'T decided if we are keeping it secret or not, so i won'T say anything yet.

I keep gaining close to 2 pounds per week pretty consistently. Whatever. Just hope that i pass the glucose test - all these sweets might mean no. I think it is around 28 weeks and i am at 22.

Enjoying feeling the little flutters occasionally, but more regularly. SInce my placenta is in the front, they said it will take longer to feel it so i am not stressing about not having it for a few days but will call the doctor next week to know for sure.

SO I,m not the only one with sleep problems. SO weird bc it'S not bc I,m too big yet and although i wake up regularly, getting used to sleeping on side, i don'T call that sleeping problems. It is when i wake up for a few hours and can'T fall back to sleep - not like me. I know the anxiety about different tests is underlying but does not feel like the main thing. A friend told me she thinks it is hormones and that all pregnant woman she knows have sleep problems. ANyway, getting used to it, but man, we need to get cable! A carb meal like cereal and banana often helps me fall back to sleep.

Yes, getting more nesty and we need to especially bc baby'S room is 90% storage and 10% office right now. SO lots of work to do.

Good luck with the test, Bella and with the moves, Want2bskny and April!

Take care all and thanks again for the support.

Algts, I'm having my baby on the 8th of April. I have a c-section. The choice is no longer mine having had 2 emergencies and the last one was scheduled and almost a rupture. That means I will have my baby in 22 days - yay.

Interesting that they weigh you each time. They stopped doing that here years ago.

My baby has been measuring 9 days ahead since my first scan at 18 weeks.

I don't know how you are all feeling but I'm seriously over being pregnant. Bring on the baby so I can start feeling normal - well normal aside from the sleep deprivation and huge milk filled breasts. I am so uncomfortable now, sleep is something I do in between going to the toilet. It's crazy how many times a night I end up going to the loo.

I love feeling him move, it's very reassuring but sometimes it can be quite painful and uncomfortable. I have moments I feel I've been stretched to capacity. Ahh, the joys of pregnancy. I can't wait for my prize at the end of it all... my beautiful baby!

It's weird, because until this 9 month mark of 36 weeks, i've been totally in love with being pregnant, but I can't help but dream about losing the weight & looking good again!

I feel lately like i always do lc for 2 months, lose 20 lbs *which is amazing*, but then lose motivation and get the weight back on. I pray I can stick to it this time & really lose the weight.

I also need to be more motivated about working out, that's usually a 2 week thing for me. Hard for me to stay motivated longer than that. BOO!

Hi Ladies! Long time no speak! I haven'T been on forum much the last month - only a few times in my journal. Good to catch up here.

BellaMeow, congrats about passing the glucose test! THat is great. I had mine almost 2 weeks ago and didn'T hear about results; i assume the dr will tell me at next appointment next week. We also get weighed every visit and i am amazed that they haven'T said anything yet about my gain - this week hit 28 pounds gained since testing at 4 weeks (after the sudden 7 pound gain on honey moon).

I'm still in love with being pregnant - loving the movements (quite light, probably bc placenta in front or maybe she is just dainty :)) and the belly and it all. It'S going too fast for me! I want to meet baby, but right now, i just want to be connected to her like this. Now, i know, i am jsut entering the 3rd trimester today (gone so fast!) so that may all change as i get bigger and maybe pains etc. I actually stopped having sleep problems for the last month but may be starting again.

Still doing mostly daily sugary desserts, after eating the good stuff - not great for health. At least last week i finally made an effort and made it through 4 nights without big sugary desserts (still had things like muffins with jam, granola with sugar added)' but not the 'real' desserts. WOuld like to be strong enough to only have on weekends. WHo knows.

Good luck to you all. Wow, Mermaiden, only a little over a week to go and Bella, a month! Good luck in the final stretch!

Hi all

I am now the proud mother of a beautiful baby boy. He was born on the 31st March at 7.4lbs. I was rescheduled to an earlier date because of concern about my previous scar rupturing.

The surgery went well but as suspected my uterine wall was very thin and only covered by a thin membrane.

I probably wont be on here much for a little while as I am still recovering and getting used to life with 3 littlies.

I intend to go back to low carb in a few more weeks but right now I just want to regain my strength and get through the sleepless nights. I don't know if it's the breastfeeding, the pain or the lack of sleep but I am certainly hungry and eating all the time.

I hope all is going well for you lovely ladies. Enjoy your pregnancies!

Congratulations! Try to get rest as much as you can. I remember being so hungry also. I hope you have some help from caring adult(s) for a little while. I only have dh and usually for only a week--so hard!

Congrats Bella and Mermaiden!!! How exciting!!!

I too have a new addition -- a little girl born on 4/13, she is a sweetie pie!! Red hair and blue eyes so far (just like her dad).

She is four weeks old and I had a good day one yesterday in terms of getting back on track with controlling my carbs. I gained 40 with the pregnancy and lost 20 very quickly. This next 20 will take a lot of work to lose, and then want to lose even more.

I am also nursing exclusively at this point.

I loved being big and pregnant, now I am just BIG!!! Ugh!

lol, i know what you mean about being big. No one's even noticed i've lost 35lbs! lol. It's pretty funny though. I've been working out religiously since day 9 after delivery ( i felt incredible) and have been losing the last little bit slower than normal, but I eat carbs like grains (healthy ones) every morning & some dairy. So it's nice to be losing ~ all while eating some carbs. Last night I ate two peices of pizza & lost 2 ounces, not much, but a loss. Normally that'd be a 1lb gain!

Congrats on your little one. We should post pics.

That's amazing how quickly you were able to start working out Bella. I was "told" that I should rest for 6 weeks before starting to exercise, so I made to 4 weeks, now I feel like I should start working hard to lose the baby weight or I will be in trouble.

I've gotten on the exercycle the past two days and feel pretty good -- I think I'm ready to get back into exercising.

Each chlld I've had (this is #3) I seem to gain 10 pounds with...... never got back to the starting weight.

I'm trying to stick close to induction with the exception of fruit and low carb products.

I don't want to feel bad about being in a bathing suit this summer, but worried I won't meet any of my goals.

Pregnancy does take it's toll on the body!!!

My dr said as long as I felt good, he's all for exercising. He's an exercise advocate. But, NO sex until the 6 weeks. I tore really bad, so ya. Hey, little girl is yelling ~ me, better go.

CONGRATULATIONS Bella and Want2bskny!!!!!
That's fantastic news.

I still have not exercised and my son is now 10 weeks old!
I started actively trying to lose weight when he was around 4 weeks old and have lost around 13lbs since then (not counting that initial loss from the birth). I am still not on low carb but am eating better than before. I guess I'll get there in the end.

I hope you and your bubs are all well.

Well I am 6.4lbs away from prepregnancy weight. Thank GOD! Mostly watching what I eat with the exception of good carbs, grains and such and exercising has helped me. I notice if I cheat or eat badly I feel so sick, but it's easy to lose what I did gain. Must be that breastfeeding. My dr. is so proud of me which is VERY encouraging.

Addison is doing so well, Thank the Lord, we have not had any issues yet. I feel so blessed. Breastfeeding is going so good, which is wonderful because I can't imagine some of those BAD days if that was a mess.

Hi everyone

I officially restarted Atkins about 3 weeks ago. I was doing weight watchers and losing weight but really hating the whole points system and eating low fat. I feel so free being back on low carb, it really works for me on so many levels. I just kept continually craving sweets on ww.

My son was around 11.5 weeks when I started and I have been monitoring him closely. He's been great. I've tested my breastmilk for ketones and it has come up negative.

I'm still not exercising per se but I'm definitly getting some activity in with a soon to be 5-year-old and 3-year-old keeping me busy. Yesterday and today we jumped on the trampoline and of course there is the continual up and down of life with young children and a baby :)

I hope you are all doing well and finding a good routine with your babies.
