I think this is important for all LCers contemplating the change over.

Q: I've been on the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ for four weeks and have stayed in ketosis the whole time. When I switch to The South Beach Diet, do I begin with Phase 1 or Phase 2?
—Barb
A: If you're coming off the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ and have successfully eliminated your cravings for highly processed carbohydrates and sugars, I recommend you start with Phase 2 of The South Beach Diet™. Your biggest challenge will be adjusting your diet to reintroduce good carbs and good fats instead of eating no carbs and unlimited fats.
The South Beach Diet™ aims to limit saturated fat intake by focusing on lean meats and low-fat dairy products. You'll also cut out prime rib and heavy cream. I encourage you to get plenty of good fats—especially olive and canola oils—as these can actually help with long-term weight loss.
You'll no longer be deprived of carbohydrates—instead, you'll learn to recognize the difference between whole grains and refined-flour products. You'll also begin adding fruit to your diet. The addition of good carbs will not only provide you with important nutrients like fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, it will also allow you to create a more varied and interesting menu.
As with switching from Phase 1 to Phase 2, when you go from the Atkins Nutritional Approach™ to Phase 2, it's important to take your time reincorporating carbohydrates. Adding them back too quickly can stall weight loss and reintroduce cravings. Try adding one carbohydrate at a time and see how your body responds. If cravings return, try other carbohydrates until you find one that works. Once you add one successfully, you can try adding a second, and so on.
Keep in mind that you will not be experiencing ketosis while on The South Beach Diet™. This means you may not see the same rapid weight loss you experienced on the Atkins Nutritional Approach™. You will, however, be following a healthy and balanced diet that you can maintain for life.
