A company that said its "fat-burning" beads triggered "automatic weight loss" has agreed to stop marketing in the UK.

One claim suggested that Accu-Slim Beads worked "faster than total starvation" by placing one bead behind each ear.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) sought assurances from Global DM Licensing, based in Hong Kong, that it would stop mailings being sent to UK consumers.

The OFT says thousands fall victim to claims about weight loss products.

Misleading claims

The company, using the name The AccuSlim Centre, claimed the beads were "fat burning acupuncture without needles, diets, exercise or effort".

It claimed that users could eat as much as they liked but still lose 30lbs in 30 days, as the bead stimulated acupressure points that led to automatic weight loss.

The company claimed guaranteed results and charged £65 for a package of up to 120 beads.

The OFT demanded evidence to support the claims and said that clinical papers on acupuncture that it received in return did not provide satisfactory proof about the claims made in the mail-shots.

The company, which believed that bead acupuncture was as effective as traditional acupuncture, agreed to stop sending the mailings to UK consumers and to adopt stricter policies for future advertising in the UK.

"Every year thousands of people fall victim to misleading claims about products that promise weight loss without exercise or dieting," said Mike Haley, the OFT's head of consumer protection.

"The OFT will continue to take action against such companies to stop them from exploiting customers."

Previous research by the watchdog estimated that 200,000 UK consumers fall victim to misleading miracle health and slimming cure claims every year, losing around £20m.

wow that is a bit extreme.... it may have been believable if they made less extravagant claims.

I somewhat recall hearing about an accupuncture point in the ear that dramatically facilitates weightloss but I doubt a little bead would be as effective as true accupuncture or that you can eat whatever you want and not excercise. Accupuncture may improve overall health, solve some problems and stimulate the metabolism but ppl can't expect to be eating cheesecake and sleeping all day and still lose weight.

Long ago, I had an acupuncture pin put in my ear to help with weight loss. Since I was part of a study, I didn't have to pay anything for it. I didn't lose a thing!

Oh my I have to reply because I am on the TRUE accuweight program! It is AMAZING. The protocol is nothing like the claims from this article. You have to follow a very strict way of eating - basically a lacto-vegetarian diet with the accupressure beads being rubbed every two hours and chi-gong breathing. My sister just lost 21 and I lost 22 lbs in 5 weeks. It resets your weight "Set point" as well. I could go on and on, but it's amazing. There is only one Dr Schwartz though - all the others are imposters.

So you're giving credit to the bead as opposed to the very strict diet? Interesting...

Look I am giving credit to the entire program which includes the beads, diet and breathing. I was not saying go get beads and put them behind your ears and eat like a cow, but thanks for the interpretation.

Let me rephrase that: You don't think the strict diet alone would work.

I usually think these things I've seen, like miracle fat burning XYZ usually come along with a strict diet. It's a way to CYA. Then if it doesn't work you can blame the consumer because they weren't following the diet closely enough. If it does work you can give the credit to the Miracle fat burning xyz.

Somehow these amazing things never quite seem to work on their own merits.

Oh I am not being clear. The program I am on is not the above diet. The above diet is an 'imposter' of the AccuWeight loss plan, which is MUCH different.

For some reason this is reminding me of the "Relaxicizer" vibrating weight-loss product in "Mad Men". :)

Of course, that one included a 'healthy diet' in the fine print, too.

If the article-described FAKE program worked, shouldn't I be losing weight because my glasses put pressure behind my ears and I am wearing "needles" stuck in my ears (cute little gold earrings)? Phooey! Maybe I just need a stronger glasses prescription to lose those extra pounds?

Especially if you have the optician specify a prescription that makes nearby things look larger than they appear. Serve up a "slider" hamburger on a saucer from a set of doll dishes, and you'll be like, "Good grief, this is a HUGE burger! No way am I going to finish it!"

Accupuncture has some pretty amazing results... I don't doubt that it helps but with anything, you can't expect to loose weight while eating donuts, cookies, and crisps.

The whole chinese medicine thing is quite fascinating...if you read up on the body's meridians and energy systems you can see why accupuncture does what it does.
