Hi all,
I just started Atkins 6/26, I have been really sticking to the plan, but Thurs. night I had a couple of glasses of white wine (it was pretty sweet). Middle of the day yesterday I had horrible diarrhea. It continued all day, started feeling really bad later in the day, achy, slightly feverish, like I had the flu. Took some Pepto to be able to sleep. Got up this morning and still have it. Drinking lots of water (it literally is running right through me) have not eaten since lunch yesterday and don't really feel like eating.
Question is, did the wine cause this, or is it probably the stomach flu? How long will it last if it was from the wine? If it is the stomach flu, I know I need to eat, but usually I would turn to soup or something like that. What can I have that would be light like soup, but not full of carbs? I am in ketosis, have lost 4lbs. so far, and don't want to mess myself up and have to start over. I had just gotten over the feeling really crappy faze of induction, now this. Thank you for all your help!

Hmm, I guess my answer is, it could be either. I'm thinking if it lasts more than a day or so, it's probably a virus. I know I had a weird stomach thing for a week or so, and I initially thought it was something I was eating but then others in my family had the same thing and I realized it was just ordinary, garden-variety illness.
It made me bloat up something awful, too: I gained at least 5lbs while I was sick, even though I was eating less due to feeling yucky, and all of it on-plan. The good news is that the bloat is coming off pretty quick, but it was discouraging!

I cook celery, broccoli, and cauliflower, and cut up chicken in chicken broth for soup.

You could be experiencing the Induction "flu". A lot of people get to feeling pretty crappy (no pun intended) for the first couple of weeks, mostly flu like symptoms. Try some chicken broth and small bites of salad for a little while.
I had the runs (and still get them at least once a week) in the beginning. I am on my 8th week of induction. I have yet to be constipated like most folks.
Also, try some fiber pills or psyllium husks. Just check the carb content. These can help you for either problem.
Hang in there - you will feel better very soon!!!

I, too, am cursed with diarrhea not constipation! It may just be a side effect of drinking the wine from your body being in ketosis. I've noticed that whenever I drink alcohol (in any form) when I'm LCing it, the next day I feel like sh*t and am taking several!!!! It may last for a bit over one day and slowly ease up.
I hope you feel better soon! :)

Thank you all for your quick responses. I am going to make some chicken soup (really just boil the chicken and have the chicken and broth). I think I am feeling better, just kind of weak, but that is probably from not eating. I really appreciate all your help!
Thanks,
Jennifer

Jennifer,
I've been following Atkins since Oct. '07, and have noticed that when
I drink wine, which is infrequent, the next day I often have diarrhea.
I'd been wondering if I was the only one to have this, so it's interesting
to hear of your experience. Yours is probably magnified a bit since
you're on induction, though I usually keep my carbs between 20-25/day.
Any others with this sensitivity?
I usually am back to normal in a day or two. Hope you feel much better soon!!

Kathy,
Thanks for your response. I believe it is the stomach flu, hubby has it now too. I am still not completely over it this morning, but I am feeling some better. I had been drinking dry red wine. I usually have a glass before bed, and did not give that up during induction (I know, that's a no no) but it didn't give me any problems. But this was a sweet white, so I didn't know if maybe all the sugar in it had caused the problem. This is so annoying, I don't think I'll take the chance again!
Thanks
Jennifer
