Daryl's links are good! The nutshell version is "no grains, no legumes, no dairy, no sugar, no processed foods." The rest is all details that we like to argue over ad nauseum. :)

Totally. There are some big differences between so-called paleo diets. Some will still eat a lot of food that was not around in paleo times.
Do what you feel is right. For my wife and I this means the list in our sig...others will continue to eat butter, salt, nightshades or artificial sweeteners.
Each to their own ;)

i'm thinking that dairy stalls me so I might have to cut it out, I'm just hoping that it is something that I can live without.
I really wish I could lose weight right now but I'm breast feeding and everyone is freaking out about what I should or shouldn't be eating. It's so freaking confusing.
I'm doing somewhat low carb, trying to stay at 40 or below and only allow myself maybe one fruit (small serving sf apple sauce) or berries, and sometimes I have wheat (low carb wraps etc...) but I find those stall me too.
Scary and depressing as well SPLENDA. I can't only tolerate maybe a tbl a day. And I"m way over doing that...
sigh.
Thanks guys. I'll figure it out.

Yes, you will :agree: but it's tough to do, sometimes. Just hang in there, if you have any questions, please ask them, there are some great folks around here to help :)

I used to be the kind of person who would put cheese on everything that would stand still, or just eat plain cheese if I couldn't catch anything.
The idea of giving up dairy is actually harder than the giving it up part.

I have been on a relatively strict paleo diet through-out my pregnancy and with breast feeding. I am still breast feeding and my son is 10 months old. I consulted a dietitian and he said that it sounded like we (my husband and I) knew what we were doing and it appeared to be safe. I did become more strict after giving birth with no ill effects on my milk supply.
My son is very healthy and active. He just started walking today (10 months old) and I get many comments about him being very alert and intelligent for his age (right from when he was born). He also showed a great advancement in his strength compared to other babies and could hold his weight on his legs from about 6 weeks old.
I could go on and on bragging about him and his accomplishments, but my point is that I think the Paleo diet has contributed to his development.
I have also put my son on a Paleo diet and he is thriving very well on it. (although I have created a lot of paleo substitutes for things like cake, ice cream, biscuits etc.. so lots of people don't realise I am feeding him paleo food).

I was a bit surprised at that site. It has an FAQ written by Cordain that states that paleo should restrict fat intake and avoid animal fats:
This nutritional plan is totally unlike those irresponsible, low-carbohydrate, high-fat, fad diets that allow unlimited consumption of artery-clogging cheeses, bacon, butter, and fatty meats. Rather, the foundation of The Paleo Diet is lean meat, seafood, and unlimited consumption of fresh fruits and veggies.
... The diet doctors with their low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets offer us an alternative, but this nutritional gambit is nothing more than a short term ploy to lose weight that in the long run is unhealthy because of its reliance upon fats (bacon, butter, fatty meats, cheeses, etc.) at the expense of healthful fruits and vegetables.
anyway...

It gets even better when Cordain calls some of the saturated fats "deadly".
I've kind of given up on Cordain. His premise that we should eat how we evolved isn't a bad one, but his logic on how to follow it seems a bit flawed.

Ah, I see. I read Ray Audette's book and started paleo long before discovering Cordain, so I guess I didn't read his book so closely.

People come up with all kinds of interesting scenarios about what paleo means. The "saturated fat is bad" one is pretty hysterical. Rates right up there with people who claim those in tropical areas historically thrived on a low fat diet and then list coconut as a food staple. Uhhh...hellooooo!

But, don't they use low-fat coconuts??
Cordain is very intelligent, but as many others have stated, I think he's wrong on the fat issue.
