Hi,
I wanted to start a thread about exceptional brands that fit apples well. We had a plus size clothing thread going awhile ago but we never broke it down by body type.
I'll start:
Lane Bryant/Avenue is not for apples!
Liz Claiborne is good.
Baby Phat jeans are the best I've seen - the thighs are cut the narrowest of any brand I've tried on.
Dockers pants are good, depending on the cut, but they are explicit about cut on the label. They also have a style number on the label so you can buy your favorite again.
I buy a biker short with skirt overlay tankini bathing suit from Contour(Roman's or Lane Bryant catalog) which fits the apple shape correctly. I'm on my third one because it fits so good.
I am curious about Junonia and any other important ones that pop ino your minds. My measurements are as follows:
Bust: 50.5
Waist: 45.5
Hips: 49
Thigh: 22
Arm 15.5
I am spending a lot of time updating my wardrobe with each size change, and I want to be more efficient.

I've done well in the past with http://www.newport-news.com Going by their size chart (here: http://www.newport-news.com/customer/chart_fashion.aspx ) it looks like you'd fall into the 22 or 24 category and they seem to have a lot of items in those sizes. And they have some really good prices... like one shirt I was looking at comes in a 3 pack for $21. (Darn, where is my credit card again? )
I'm a stereotypical apple... zero waist, blech... but I've done well with their stuff in the past.
HTH!

I've had success with them, too. The size charts never mean anything for me for some reason - the waist and hip and bust sizes never correspond to what really fits, which is one reason it's so frustrating to shop by mail. Everything especially at New Port News runs really big for me. I just went shopping in a real storeand was fitting into all 20's and a few 18's.
Thanks!

I haven't bought fun clothes in a while so I'm not so helpful there. The jeans recommendation may have come to late since I seem to be in misses sizes, but I would have killed to know about Baby Phat jeans!
I just made a discovery that is not so surprising -- junior size jeans fit better. I bought a pair of size 15 Wranglers. They fit. A size 16 is too big in the seat and thigh.
For suits I find Calvin Klein and Tahari by Arthur Levine work well -- especially Tahari. The two Tahari suits have sleeveless tops with side zippers. They are tailored, making me appear to have a waist. (I wear spanx under them for muffin top syndrome.) I don't often find tailored blouses that work, but I look a lot better in them.
I have found that Jones New York is fitting me better, but I suspect that I'm slightly less apple than before rather than Jones having changed over the years.
One very hard to find brand that looks and fits great is Harve Benard. That line seems to be split into two without separate labeling the way you find on Jones and Ralph Lauren. One line is lousy, the other is quite well made, great "architectural lines" and high quality material. Elegant in the same way Albert Nippon was in the 80s. Again, I have a tough time finding them.
Anne Klein does not work at all. Tiny waist.
For your basic business blouse, Foxcroft is wonderful. Waist is just big enough, quality rocks. I have some that are old, probably 8 years old, and they look new straight out of the dryer.
Talbot Woman is all over the place for fit. They use multiple sources with multiple shapes and put their labels on them. If you look at 5 identical skirts or slacks or blouses labeled size 16W, they all fit the same, but if you pick up a different skirt or slack or blouse labeled 16W it may be up to 2 sizes larger or smaller. Annoying, and makes it impossible for me to shop from their online catalog. I have a sweater from them that is 9 years old and looks brand new, and a fabulous linen classic spring suit that is the best suit I own.

I'm not too sure about actual brands of clothing that are good for apples, but I do know that because of my much thinner legs, things like yoga pants and anything with spandex or lycra looks better than the saggy, baggy clown pants. I also recently found empire waists on shirts and dresses! WOW! What a difference that has made in my life. So many people have been commenting recently on how much weight I've lost in the last while. I haven't actually lost anything. I'ts just a change in style! :D

Baby Phat jeans are usually $150 - $225 a pair. Anyone watch Kimora's show, "Life in the Fab Lane"? Kimora is the creator of Baby Phat. My 18 year-old daughter said, "That's SO ghetto, Mom", when we were out shopping and I saw some on sale.

They were never good for me in the past, but they have a right fit thing now, and *yellow* jeans seem to work really well for me.. I would suggest you try some

I am a short apple and let me tell you that stinks! I find a blouse that fits and the arms are so long that you can't see my hands. I find a pair of slacks that fit in the waist and the thighs and butts swim around me. It's a mess.
I shop at a store called Catherines and I spend hours in there trying this on and that on. Takes forever. But I don't have much luck with catalog orders.
There is a brand called Liz & Me that seems to work good for the most part. They tend to run large. The only thing is that sometimes their blouses have extra "swing" in the tummy area and on an apple it can make you look pregnant.
Here's a shout to my short apple sisters!

If you're in misses sizes, totally check out old navy jeans. (I think they go up to 20, but I haven't seen them higher than that in the stores. Wait no, allow me to eat my words :D I just looked at their site and they have up to size 30 online.)
I don't really do well with their shirts, kind of hit or miss, but I think that's because I'm tall, so their shirts are always too darn short on me. Had the same problem with Lane Bryant back in the day. (Seriously, they make pants in long, do they not know us tall people have long torsos too?)
Wait I got sidetracked there... oh jeans right  Check out old navy's low rise and mid rise bootcut jeans. Ok, before you jump on me about lowrise (as many do  ) They're really not *that* low - midrise is just a little below the navel, which means they don't go 'in' at the waist... thereby saving us apples the creation of a muffin top. I swear I don't know what I'll do if they ever stop making these jeans! They've been a lifesaver.
I also recently found empire waists on shirts and dresses! WOW! What a difference that has made in my life.
That just reminded me of another brand - INC (International Concepts). They have it at Macy's. I've never tried their pants, so I don't know how they work, but I have gotten a ton of empire waist shirts from that brand. And I really like them because I always find their clothes kinda funky and fun.

I'm very much an apple, with almost no noticeable waist. My waist to hip ratio has actually gotten worse as I've lost weight.
Old Navy jeans are very good for apples. Also, I agree that junior sizes can fit well for apples because they are cut less generous at the hips than misses sizes. In misses sizes, when I get the waist to fit, the result is that the backside is often very baggy. The problem with junior sizes is I can't find them in casual, but professional looking pants that I can wear to work.

Have you tried Express? or H&M? In my skinner days I've found work pants at both. I can't remember if H&M has plus sizes, but I know Express doesn't. They don't go higher than a 14... but if you're fitting in juniors that should be ok.

Carolyn, you might try torrid.com for larger juniors. They're slanted a bit towards hip-hop, but I've seen work pants in their store.
My daughter explained junior styles to me recently: hip-hop (ghetto), emo, goth, and prep. There are probably more that i can't recall. :)

Now that I'm thinking about clothes, I think this leads to another important topic: bras.
As we lose weight, our bra sizes will change too. The thing is, a majority of women wear the wrong size bra. I got roped into watching an episode of Oprah once where they taught women how to find the right bra size and I think they said something like 80% of women wear the wrong bra. Being that I used to be the chick at the shop measuring women for this, that sounds about right.
On top of that, a bra that doesn't support correctly can make you look larger than you are. God knows none of us need that! :D
So here are some instructions on how to check your size: http://www.fredericks.com/services/help.asp?81 I suggest doing it in front of a mirror so you can check that the measuring tape is straight. You might be surprised at the results.
And if you're not in the US, once you've measured you can use the bra size conversion chart ( http://www.fredericks.com/services/help.asp?79 ) for other countries.
Fredericks carries bras up to, I believe, 42F... but I know there are a lot of good sites out there for larger sizes.
Also some fitting tips from that Oprah episode: http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/200505/tows_past_20050520_c.jhtml

Thanks for the tips on juniors, anyway... and lowcarbUgh. I'll check them out. I'm currently wearing size 15 in the juniors that are sold at Wal-Mart, so I don't think I'll need plus sizes. It would be very slimming to not have a baggy pant backside.

Harve Bernard and Ralph Lauren, both make a line of better clothing...then they knock themselves off so that they can put their label into the off price stores.
The fit does get altered when they set out to cut their prices....they also cut the specs!!

What does "knocking themselves off" mean? I know that Ralph Lauren black label has a much slimmer fit than then green "Lauren" label, not to mention the clothes are to die for. :)

It is an industry term for making their lines cheaper to sell to off price and discount stores.
Ralph Lauren is the dressy bridge label...Lauren is more casual.

Okay, so I'm SUCH an apple and I've become quite the expert on finding clothes that actually fit me. It doesn't mean there's a lot out there, it just means I know what I can buy.
First, Torrid's clothes are not all "hip hop". In actuality, the store is owned by the same company that owns Hot Topic, and originally sold clothes more along those lines. They've since branched out to include "urban" lines, as they're referred t on the web site. The more "goth" or "punk clothes" are under the "Edge" category. The rest of their clothes are much more mainstream these days, with perhaps just a bit of a sway toward certain subcultures.
That being said, Torrid is a great place to find pants perfect for the apple shape. Anything from shorts to skirts to jeans and work pants. The Torrid brand fits the apple shape perfectly, but they also carry Paris Blues, Apple Bottoms, etc. Their sizes go down as small as a size 12, or a size "0" (like an XL) in tops.
The only bottoms I can wear from Lane Bryant are their right fit jeans, but I swear by them. If you've not shopped for them, they actually are categorized for certain shapes. Apples are the color yellow, and the size is based on your waist measurement. Their "Houston" dress pant also comes in right fit sizes, but is only available on line. I've yet to order a pair of these as I haven't been able to bring myself to spend the $50+... especially now that I'm dropping sizes
So the brands I absolutely swear by - Lane Bryant Right Fit, Torrid Brand, LEI and Paris Blues.
I ordered some pants from Old Navy the other day and was surprised to find that the 22's were just HUGE on me. They were loose, but a lot better fitting in the waist, but the hips and thighs just SWAM on me. And they were all made with that awful thigh bump of fabric. NOT EVERY FAT WOMAN IS SHAPED THAT WAY, DANGIT!
I bought my first dress in AGES last week. It's a sun dress with elastic just under the bust and it drapes BEAUTIFULLY. I looked very much less pregnant in it than I thought I would. :)

At 212, I still wear the same bra size as at 285 - I've just moved the fasteners. I have bought the next size down, but it never fits, even with my recent losses. It sucks because I am a 48D and I don't have to tell you ladies how tragic this is, but they discontinued my bra! My chest size is 44 by the tape, but I can't get into a 46 bra. Arrrgghh...

ANGEL brand jeans, capris, and shorts! They are stretchy and slim in the butt and hips and legs! They look great! You can get them many places - Gordmans (1/2 price store), Fashion Bug, and most department stores. If you wear an 18 or smaller, don't go to the plus size because you may be able to wear a smaller size in their items. Try on for sure!!

I haven't read the article that Pennink posted but I can tell you that you need to be an educated customer to know the difference. It is not difficult to see these difference when you know what to look for.
I find that department store sales are the truest and best way to find good bargains. All discount stores will buy some real off price and mix in the fake stuff with it. The real bargains mixed in with the fake, gives the fake credibilty. They count on the customer not knowing the difference. :)

What style did you order? I find I have the same problem with old navy jeans *except* the boot cut styles because they're cut slim in the thighs.
I ordered two pairs of the shorts with pleats in the leg, a pair of dress trousers, and a pair of wide leg pants. The "pleats" in the legs of the shorts just created too much extra material and the pants BOTH had the extra hip bump fabric.
I'll keep in mind the boot cut styles in case I decide to ever order from them again. This was the first stuff I'd bought since the plus sizes were no longer available in the stores, so I was really bummed...
That being said, I tried on a pair of straight size 20 (like the 20's available in the store now) jeans that I've been holding on to forever and I was TOTALLY able to zip them up without dying. I had MAJOR muffin top, but STILL! Another 15 pounds or so and they'll actually fit again.
I weight a lot and always have, but I'm able to get in to sizes that a lot of people my weight normally can't. At least with pants. Shirts are a different story all together (because of the APPLE shape) Even when I was a size 12 or 14, the Old Navy XXL button up tops didn't always fit me.
I'm not an obsessive Old Navy shopper, but I'm sort of using them as my guide and for goal clothes, since I wore them a lot when I was thinner. First goal? To be able to buy the size 20 pants with no issues. Second goal? To be able to fit in to their xxl tops again. It'll happen :)

Was going to tell you all about my favorite jeans thinking that they would probably solve your problem, but then when I went to walmart tonight I realized my Levi jeans only go up to an 18 (well, in the style good for apples anyway). Darn.
So keeping you in mind, I headed over to the plus size section and there... OH! On the folded jean section on the bottom shelf were Faded Glory bootcut jeans in plus sizes! I saw them up to 26W.
They sit a bit below the waist - which is fantastic. Low enough not to create a muffin top, but high enough that you're not showing your underroos to the world  Slim cut through the hip and thigh. AND bootcut, which helps balance the shape of your upper and lower body. They also seem to come in petite, average and tall. Oh, and about $19. Woo!
I haven't tried them on because they didn't have them in my size, so I can't tell you exactly how they fit compared to the jeans I worship... but I have bought this style in many brands of jeans and they always seem to work well. Hoping they work for you too!

I forgot about these - they've aways worked for me in the past - that and the old George line. I am good for jeans right now, but I will remember this as a cheap alternative when these clothes get too big. I wonder how much of a difference there is between an 18W and a regular 18? I don't know what I'll do if they ever stop making low waisted boot cut jeans.

Thanks for thinking of me! I'll definitely check that out next time I get to Wallyworld (I must live in one of the only neighborhoods in America that is not five minutes from a Walmart). I don't think I've tried on any Faded Glory brand bottoms in a month of sundays... and I need new shorts, so I have an excuse to go and check it out!
I actually forgot to mention in my first post that Levis jeans sometimes fit really, really well. I've only ever bought the ones I've found at Ross or Marshall's, though... I think the two pair I currently own are 505's, maybe and are both size 21. That type of levis seems to really stretch, as I was wearing them when I was most certainly NOT a 21. :)
So that raises a good question - what's the difference between expensive levis and Walmart levis? Is the fit the same?
I think I may need to investigate this...

They got their stats used for recommendations by polling real people. I was one of the people who answered questions about fit and preferences for plus size jeans and for bras.
I totally forgot to mention this site early. I *really* love it.

btw... Ghetto as per urban dictionary
1. (n.) an impoverished, neglected, or otherwise disadvantaged residential area of a city, usually troubled by a disproportionately large amount of crime
2. (adj.) urban; of or relating to (inner) city life
3. (adj.) poor; of or relating to the poor life
4. (adj.) jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components), yet still deserving of an odd sense of respect from ghetto dwellers and non-ghetto dwellers alike
1. John's paranoia about triple-checking whether or not he's locked his car doors comes from his growing up in the ghetto
2. "Why you always be talkin' ghetto? Get yo'self a propa' e-ju-ma-kay-shun, kid!"
3. Jane hid her head in embarrasment as her mom shamelessly committed the ghetto act of stuffing the restaurant's bread rolls, sugar packets, and silverware in her purse
4. "A TV Guide duct-taped to a 4 foot stick?! That's one hella ghetto 'mote control!"

I don't know about 18W vs 18... when I was an 18 I refused to buy 18s and just stuffed myself in 16s. *sigh* It's amazing what we do to ourselves, isn't it? :D But I do know there is a very big difference between 16W/16 and 14W/14. Like right now, 16W would fall off me, where a 16 is just kind of loose. 14W would probably fit me perfectly, but a 14 cuts off my circulation.
I'm glad to hear about the faded glory ones! I was hoping I was recommending something good  Have you tried the levi strauss signature jeans in low rise boot cut? Those are my go-to jeans and walmart has them for like $15... and they have a little bit of stretch in them, so they might actually work for you in an 18 if you are an 18W.
So that raises a good question - what's the difference between expensive levis and Walmart levis? Is the fit the same?
I think I may need to investigate this...
Absolutely! I get so excited when I have a chance to help someone :D (Hence the insanely abundant use of exclamation points! )
I haven't actually tried on many Levi's... I just happened to come across the Levi Signature walmart jeans because they were on sale and figured 'what the heck'... so that probably doesn't help you compare. But Levi's has so many different cuts I'm sure everyone could find something that works for them. If you do try on more expensive Levi's, keep me posted. I might need to buy jeans soon... I'm thinking a few more pounds and I might be able to squeeze into my 14s (If I suck it in really good and zip them up lying down  )
Oh and neato plus size shorts? Totally check out target.
Yayay we're gonna be the best dressed group of apples around!

I have to admit to another embarrassing strategy I've been employing recently - under the belly maternity pants in a couple sizes smaller than my regular pants! I was able to find shorts that actually fit my thighs and provide coverage and today I bought fancy dress pants (Liz Lange for Target) at the thrift store, brand new, one in a size 16 and one in an 18 for less than $4 for both. They don't really fit under my belly - they are more like normal pants that just happen to have a thick stretchy waistband instead of a regular waistband, like yoga pants. But the legs and butt are just right. With a longer shirt they are very flattering and comfortablet.
