Hi all,
I'm an oldie, but a newbie. I've never truly DONE southbeach before (nor any of the programs, honestly and with devotion) but I am committed to losing some weight before christmas of this year. I'm going to reread the southbeach book and do this thing! I didn't survive well on atkins or protein power, so I'm hoping southbeach is for me.
The way I'm going to think of it before i really get into the diet hardcore next week is:
If it's not a fruit, a vegetable, a protein, or a low-fat dairy, do i really need it?
I'm going camping this weekend and it's tough to low-carb while you're camping, but I'm going to give it my best shot and start hardcore with south beach next monday.
Wish me luck!

Welcome to the Beach Aetheana! I do alot of camping during the summer also and it really can be a challenge! I do wish you all the best in your journey on South Beach! Just curious...why do you feel you didn't survive well on Atkins or PP?

Welcome to the Beach Aetheana.
I too do a lot of camping. But I've learned with a little planning ahead I eat the way we do at home.
Hope you had a fun weekend.

Thanks for the well wishes. Camping was AWESOME! It was SO hot, but we were right by a stream and we just waded in when it got too bad. We went hiking a bunch and it was just really awesome.
The reasons I think that Atkins and Protein Power didn't work for me is that I don't think I really WORKED the plan. I never really did induction and I followed the guidelines of PP for maybe a week or two and then couldn't keep up with it anymore. I'm really really ready to make a change for myself and I think SB is a good place for me because I really enjoy fruit and I like that you don't have to count anything that hardcore. I just want to focus on eating healthily and properly and get to where I need to be.
That being said, I've planned out my first week of Phase 1 and I think it's pretty good. Today my menu is (and please, feel free to critique)
B: 3 eggs, 1/3 cup or so of mushrooms, a sprinkle of NF cheddar and a V8
S: 15 almonds
L: Big salad with lettuce, peppers, onions and some rotisserie chicken on the side, some NF italian dressing
S: string cheese
D: black bean soup, glass of milk
ST: sugar free popsicle, 15 calories
Black beans count as veggies, right?

Hi and welcome!
The short answer is no...beans are beans and not veggies. If you click on my journal button and go to the 1st page, I have there the foodlists and meal plan charts that will help you learn how to eat this way. Each link you see there will give you an individual part that you can print up for reference.
Your dinner needs to have a protein, veggies and 1/3-1/2 serving of beans. We are encouraged to have 2 servings of beans a day....phase I veggies are unlimited...protein is a must. Are you using 2% milk?
Please get the charts and lists as they are the way I learned to eat this way and I could not have done this without them.

Blah! I really thought I looked at a chart and beans were below the veggies or maybe it was in the 'foods to enjoy foods to avoid' list. Blah!
Ok, so I'll revise dinner and have half a cup of black bean soup (it also has a ton of other veggies in it) and broccoli and a salad with some hard boiled eggs for protein.
I'll relook at the lists in your journal, though. My book is currently being borrowed by someone else and I will be asking for it back as soon as I possibly can.
Oh, and no, I'm using skim milk.
Thanks!

FYI- The food lists are in the books...the meal plan charts came from the SBD web site and are not in the books. Its the meal plan charts that lay it all out for you.

Excellent.
I'm sure I'll keep asking if I'm doing right things, though, I really really want to do this right and not half-assed as I've done the other low carb ways of eating.
Maybe I'll pay out to join the SBD website for a short period of time at least until I have it all down pat.
Thanks again!

Looks very good!!
How do you feel? Is this food enough for you...do you feel hungry? I ask because you are eating relatively small amounts of protein. If you are still hungry after your meals, you can have more proteins and veggies too.

Hi Judy,
Thanks for asking. I'm actually feeling quite full. I think I've really been slacking on the protein lately, so it's adequate for me for now. If I feel hungry I will definitely add in more protein. After my breakfast this morning, though with just the cottage cheese, it kept me going til 11:00! I even told myself this morning to add in an egg or something, but I don't think I could have eaten anymore.
Thanks again!
