 Im pregnant and due Mid. September and Ive already gained almost 40 pounds!!!! so Ive started back on LC eating and lost 2 1/2 pounds this week....Im not really trying to lose, just maintain but I have to admitt I was still excited to see a loss......I gained 70+ pound with each of my 2 previouse pregnancies and never lost all of that so I already weigh more a 6 mos. pregnant than I did at full term with my daughters, which were 9 & 10 lbs.......So Im trying really hard not to have an 11 pounder this time!!! LOL....I need all the encouragement I can get to stay on track!!!! thanx for listening to my whining!!

Congrats on being prego!!!!!
How many carbs are you eating a day! I think my friends stayed at around 30-40 carbs and she maintained really well she at first had gained about 25lbs and then lost about 8 and stayed at that weight until the almost then end...
Good Luck and Congrats again!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I konw your concerns about starting out heavier than you did before, but just think of this as another chance. Erin is right...you can easily keep the carbs down and eat very healthily for the baby and probably maintain nicely for a bit. But when it comes down to it just concentrate on being healthy and remember you'll have another chance at weight loss after a healthy (and hopefully not 11 lb) baby is born! Good luck!

Well....today is day 7 back on low carb eating, and I have lost about 3 pounds......is it bad to lose 1/2 lb. a day being 6 mos. pregnant considering I am overweight to begin with......I am 5ft.7in. and now ( with my big 3lb loss ) 206 pounds...........Im eating alot of salad and steamed veggies, but not a whole lot of fruit mostly just meat-cheese fat & veggies and I have been testing for ketosis and its purple.......should I up my fruit/veggies or am I o.K.?

How do you feel?
If you are feeling fit and well, then you are probably ok. If you are feeling weak, tired, hungry or dizzy, you should probably eat some more food - and maybe a few more carbs. Just my 2 pence!
All in all, though - you and your baby are far better off with you eating veggies and fruit then cookies and ice cream!

I don't think a little weight loss is detrimental when you're pregnant and overweight. I think I've read that overweight women should lose a little weight or at least maintain. I guess the maintaining would come from you losing weight but your weight stays the same because of the increasing actual baby weight and all the extra stuff that entails?
And another LC note, there are women who get gestational diabetes and their doctors put them on restricted carbs, so I don't see the harm in it.

I agree with folkshot. There was a recent study done by Saint Louis University, which said that obese women who maintained or even lost weight during pregnancy had as good or better outcomes than those who gained - even the current recommended 15 pound gain. They also distinguished between levels of obesity - so if your BMI was 31-34 you might get the best outcome from maintaining or very small gains, whereas if your BMI was 40+, the best outcomes were associated with modest losses.
Weight gain recommendations have been designed to avoid low birth weight babies, something we don't have a problem with in the overfed (and undernourished) industrialised West to the same extent as we have issues with gestational diabetes and babies that are too big to be born naturally.
My firm view is that I feel better and am better nourished on a lowish carb diet (I DO eat pulses, carby veg and fruit - but always with protein), with minimum junk and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. I eat as well as I can - 5 or 6 times a day - and exercise at a comfortable, but challenging level. What the scale does with that does not concern me very much right now.
I'm 11 weeks pregnant and have lost 8 pounds. My rate of weight loss is actually speeding up since I got pregnant - probably due to an increase in metabolic rate. I feel GREAT. That has to be good for the baby, right?
