Hi. I was wondering if anyone here cooks with morels that they pick themselves. I found some in my yard in upper Michigan, and have searched the internet to try to identify for sure that they are morels. I ate them numerous times as a child growing up in southern WV, but I have never picked them on my own ( I guess the thought of being 'wrong' on edible mushrooms is a bit scary!). Here is a pic of them, if anyone is a 'shroom expert.
Thanks!

They look like morels to me. I know a young man (actually, it's his dad who's a friend of mine) who has put himself through college by picking morels during the summers. He dries them and sells them to restaurants all up and down the west coast. He has graciously shared a few small packages with me over the years. They are really delicious! :yum: :yum: :yum: Lucky you for finding them!

When my mother went shroom picking back in the hippie days, it was for a completely different reason. I'm like you and just too scared to eat mushrooms I find.
It sounds like you did a lot of research though and made sure they were safe. You might look at your local community college or herb store to see if either offer classes on mushroom or wild plant identification. Gathering your own herbs, or funguses, can be a fun way to get exercise in and have fun with your healthier eating.

I think I will try frying them up with some LC breading...I looked and looked on the internet & the morels are pretty distinctive; very hard to confuse for another poisonous mushroom. I only happened to see them because I ran a few over with the lawn mower first! I'm sure we have more somewhere on the property (we have 20 acres). Kisal, these were only about 30 yards from the house, which is pretty cool!
Don't worry, LadyBelle...these won't be used for nefarious purposes.

Well, I made the morels & they were very good! I dipped them in an egg/heavy cream mixture, then rolled them in crushed pork rinds & fried them in a little butter. Very meaty & delicious!

I loved frying morels in a pan of melted butter just to saute them till they crisp around the edges..flipping them over a few times. When I saw the pics you posted I could taste them all over again...I havent had any in years..like 12 years! YUM!
