My 2 week BG's (before today):

avg = 92.9
range = 61 -134
est.std.dev. = 15.3

Waking BG (7:00 am) = 84

BG postprandial lunch (1:20 pm) = 408

BG after mainlining several units of Novolog (6:20 pm) = 111

I haven't ordered a diet coke (which used to be my drink of choice) in over 3 months. Today, I figured, what the hell... instead of water I think I will order one... Needless to say, I feel like an idiot...

I re-checked twice after initial lunch result - then analyzed the situation... omg

I haven't had the nerve to re-analyze my latest two week data... I suck.

That sucks, Korban! I'm pretty sure I could tell the real thing from Diet Coke though I pretty much have "sugar radar."

OMG Korban! What the #~%*)?!!* is up with THAT? 408? You are scaring me. I can imagine you are scared too.

So are you saying that they gave you a regular coke? Diet coke has a peculiar, distinctive taste, to me anyway. Even so, one coke should'nt do that much, you'ed think. Well, maybe. I haven't ever tried it so I guess I am no one to speculate.

Take care of yourself:)

It scared the 'ell out of me. When I drank regular coke some 15 years ago, Diet Coke always tasted terrible. Once I committed to drinking the Diet version it only took me about 2 weeks to get used to it. Over the last several years - at a drive through for example - my wife would be the tester if the drinks were unmarked - she is a hard core real coke drinker. This was "before I was diabetic" - diet coke just seemed to make good nutritional sense to me at the time. I cannot distinguish them anymore.

Next time... I will drink water. In 3 months I am zero for one... not a good start. I am going to mention it when I go back to Logan's Restaurant for my normal burger, no bun and broccoli...

I did a search on sugar content of cokes and all. There is like 40 g HFCS in 12 ounces. I don't see how my BG could have gone that far up with the drinks I had... I am just at a loss atm... unless maybe my wife injected me with glucose this morning while I was napping.

Wow,that's weird.I drink probably 5 diet cokes a day.
Their impact on my BG is virtually nonexistant.
Maybe they slipped you a regular coke,Korban.
Even so....

Are you what they call a brittle diabetic? Did your sugar reading go way down after it peaked?

I have been stalled eating some carbs during the day now and have decided to get back to a very low carb consumption. I feel so much better without carbs.

I don't think I am a brittle diabetic but not sure (my Type1 sister-in-law is). I have only been on insulin for about 3 months (about the time I read Atkins and Bernstein). My numbers then were running 240-330. Just prior to insulin low carb (20 g/day) got me to 150ish. This is my first 400+ (other two readings on a different meter were 350 and 370).

I didn't see a hypo swing - this morning was 110 (20-40 pts higher than normal). After an LC lunch + 1 hr my number was back up to 167 (2 units Novolog), 3 hrs postprandial is at 130... wondering if I should take another unit of Novolog atm.

This is just really strange and I don't like it. I maybe over-reacting but it feels like it is taking me forever to get back in line... and now my standard deviation is screwed...

I should mention that when I drank coffee (which I love) I would get a 1 hour after waking BG of 50 - 60 pts higher than FBG (2 cups coffee). I thought it must be dawn phenomena until I didn't drink coffee and saw a waking + 1 hour increase of only 2 - 5 pts.

Yesterday was the first time I have drunk "Diet" coke (maybe 3 or 4 cups) in over three months. I only drink water and carbonated/flavored water and sometimes hot green tea. No problems with them.

Not sure why I am so sensitive to coffee either.

Might be time for a bottle of whiskey!
Actually, that would probably decrease your glucose.
I have to watch out for that.
2 or 3 shots of scotch after work will sometimes make me go
slightly hypo.

I'm quite certain you received regular coke by mistake. I drink several Diet Cokes daily and they don't affect my BG in the least. With the high numbers you are posting it is likely you have some beta cell loss.

I have Dawn Syndrome apropos of nothing and must have 1.5 units by 5:30 a.m.

I hope you get your BGs back to normal soon!

Korban,

You said you ordered a diet coke for the first time in months...

and it seems to have created a problem..

The question is: Will you order one again? :)

Dialogue between Patient and Doctor

Patient: Doctor, when I press on my stomach with my finger, it hurts. What do you think I should do?

Doctor: I think you should stop pressing on your stomach with your finger...

Seriously, I don't know if a diet coke can effect any one else, but it used to have an effect me by raising my blood sugar, although not by as much as you've indicated. I simply don't go there anymore, especially knowing the possible dangers of artificial sweetners.

But, I know how it feels to not always want to order water. When that feeling hits me, I go for Michelob Ultra Light... :) So, that is how I shoot myself in the foot.......

Hope things get better for you........

Whiskey sounds good and yes, I think it must have been a regular coke... and no, gonna stick with water or club soda with a twist from now on. I haven't really missed the cola beverage.

Cajun, you remind me of a joke with your Dr. comment - man goes to Dr., gets surgery for carpul tunnel syndrome and asked Doc... will I be able to play the piano after I get well? Doc replies, yes you should have no problem playing the piano. Pateint replies, that is great because I could never play it before and always wanted to.

Korban,

That high a blood sugar will make you insulin resistant for a while. You'll recover.

I give my partner a taste of the diet soda before I drink it. If he makes a horrible face, I know it is safe to drink. I cannot tell the difference anymore.

But I have cut way back on the colas since the findings about the phosphoric acid and kidney damage worry me.

LOL you must be married to my wife. I can't tell the difference anymore either but once could when I was a die-hard regular coke drinker.

I think I am done with soft drinks and I don't really miss them.

P.S. Jenny, it is acting just like increased IR too. That is a good reason why so many (type 2's, I assume) have similar problems with large excursions.

Korban, I see you are living in SC. Well, I am in NC (not a native though, but here for 15 years.) So you have iced tea everywhere you go, all months of the year. Not the case out of the South. Are you a tea drinker? Because I find that ordering UNsweetened tea when I go out solves the problem, if I want something other than water. You can really tell the second you taste it if there is sugar in it. Just an idea.

I've gotten regular Coke instead of diet before but I can still taste the difference immediately.
The new Coke Zero, OTOH, I have a hard time telling from regular Coke so I'll only drink that if I can see the bottle or can it came from.
I've gotten the impression that your average restaurant/fast food worker really doesn't understand the impact that something as simple as getting a regular coke instead of a diet can have on a person. I remember one time getting a regular drink going through the drive through. I parked the car, went in and asked for the diet that I ordered. The kid behind the counter said, "can't you just drink the regular?" at which point I asked to speak to his manager and educated them both on why I couldn't 'just drink the regular'. :read2:

Have any of you tried Diet Rite? No Sugar/No caffeine/no salt.

I love Diet Rite. But, unfortunately, it's not sold at fast food places where I live.

I also really like Diet Coke with Splenda (again, not sold at fast food places). However, it's gotten me accustomed to sweeter coke and has made it more difficult for me to distinguish between diet and non-diet coke.

Finally getting back to normal - 6th day now I think !!!

Yesterday morning was first morning under 100 (94). This morning was a nice 83. I can't believe the residual from one massive excursion and do believe Jenny is right re: increased insulin resistance... postprandials are behaving on basal too and no need for Novolog.

Life is good but my A1c is probably screwed...
