Hello Pinks, I'm from London and have been low carbing since the beginning of April, and loving every minute of it.

I've got a friend who did the Cambridge diet... that's with the soup sachets isn't it? He was doing it for months, but ended up with an intolerance to some of the ingredients, put weight back on and is now eating a very low calorie diet of salad and popcorn. I told him about the low carb that I was doing, but he immediately poo-pooed the idea.

I have to say, the first day after Cambridge, food came as such a shock to the system
However, I am now well and truly back in the saddle and loving my lc woe.

Where in London are you, Oblong?

Pinks -- Sarf London you say? Well you and me, we might come to blows if that's the case! :D Of course, I am just kidding!

b0llywud -- I have been doing specific low carb buying online, for example, Da Vinci sugar-free syrups from here (http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/davinci_sugar_free_syrup_details.html) and whey protein powder from here (http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/impact-whey-protein/). I only really use supermarkets for meat, fish, poultry, veg, fruit, nuts and some dairy produce.

However, I have discovered a company called Conscious Chocolate that makes raw chocolate bars, which are absolutely delicious, and I sometimes buy as a treat. Here is their website listing various stockists around the country (http://consciouschocolate.co.uk/stockists.htm)

Welcome Kimberley!

I have never seen Stevia before, although I've never looked for it either. Here's a thread (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=285048) from these forums about Stevia in the UK. 3rd post down, Demi is a fountain of knowledge and information!

Pinks -- I've just been mixing up a shake in between meals as a snack so far, and I'll use it to add to LC cakes when I make them. Some people have them in place of main meals, particularly breakfast, or if they're in a rush and on the go.

does anybody in the uk manage to get pork rinds? and where from? TIA

oblong
Wed, May-14-08, 03:57
I believe they are called "pork crunch" over here... I was thinking about getting some pork scratchings as a snack, but the amount of shit they put into those things is ridiculous... wheat, soy, sugar, not to mention the stupid amount of salt that's added.

Here's a website called 'pork scratching world' (http://www.porkscratchingworld.com) of all things, with a list of manufacturers and suppliers across the country.

I'd be sure to double check the ingredients though.

oblong
Wed, May-14-08, 04:27
BINGO!!! I have it... feast your eyes on these babies:

Pub Original Pork Scratchings (http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/pub_original_pork_scratchings_details.html) - ingredients: pork rinds, seasoning, salt.
Pub Original Pork Crunch (http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/pub_original_pork_crunch_details.html) - contains MSG
Green Top Pork Crunch (http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/green_top_pork_crunch_details.html) - both hot & spicy and original contain MSG
Microwave Pork Rinds (http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/lowreys_microwave_pork_rinds_details.html) - no ingredients listed, but on further research, I found the ingredients on another website. Contains MSG

Of course, all of the above are fine if you're happy to eat MSG.

My dad is from the black country, and whenever we went there, we'd get scratchings from the butchers.

b0llywud
Wed, May-14-08, 09:29
thanks oblong - i don't do msg - get cravings like mad - ruins all my efforts!!! lol.
I will ask my butcher if he does pork scratchings. A lot of the recipes call for it and just haven't been able to get any without the cr*p added... :D

Ok here's another limey one- what is a 'cup' measurement? (Cookery not mammary). For some reason I thought it was 8 oz. God knows why I think that, as it must be different for different density foods. Any ideas? A teacupful?<---Is that a word?

neo_crone
Thu, May-15-08, 04:12
A standard metric 'cup' holds 250ml. That is a measure of volume, not weight.
Stick to weighing everything is my advice. If you want to convert a US recipe, go to http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ and type in the food you want to convert from volume to weight. Click on the option you want (say, strawberries, raw) and you will get a list of weights against the cup sizes.

Thank you neo that's a wicked tool!

This has always been a bit of a pain when it comes to translating American recipes into British measurements, but as neo says, 1 cup = 250 ml, or 16 tablespoons. Cup measurements are readily available now (I'm sure they probably always have been) and I would recommend investing in a set of cups, just to avoid all the fiddly conversions! I shall definitely be getting some very soon.

Thu, May-15-08, 06:19

Hello there Lynn :) isn't the lack of bloating wonderful?? :D I've been very good about keeping away from wine over the past few weeks, but next week I'm going to hen party that starts at midday and ends v late and involves a Spanish meal followed by a cocktail making lesson (with drinking, of course), followed by an Italian meal with lots of wine, followed by a pub crawl, followed by a jazz club. Kimberleyb
Tue, Jun-03-08, 03:58
Blimeys, don't know about the ice lollies -maybe make your own with sweetner or unsweetened fruit juice.

Tell you what we should do, as Atkins is becoming a bit expensive- especially induction- post any offers we see on Atkinsy things in the UK supermarkets.

Morrissons (I love you, you are so cheap!) - 2 packs of shedloads of chicken drumsticks for £4 - a bargain if you can eat them all before they go off. On induction I probably could!

I am currently buying their 'Save £5 when you buy 2x packs of chicken breast fillets', as I can't imagine anything interesting to do with drumsticks. Also for the fishlovers, go to the fresh fish counter and look for offers -last week I bought a whole medium sized rainbow trout at Moz's for 84p!! Stuffed it with rosemary garlic and butter- mmmmmmmmmmmm :yum:

Also Splenda, Camembert and cheddar are on offer there at the moment

Any other deals going on in the High Street?

caroline43
Tue, Jun-03-08, 07:21
Good idea kimberly. i too am finding it expensive on induction so any bogof offers are for me. For anyone looking for 100% coconut oil, i found a 500ml bottle in my local asian supermarket it was only 2.25. i also bought a huge bag of almonds there for under 3.00. i haven't used the oil in cooking yet but my hands now smell good enough to eat lol.
tescos are doing bacon bogof so i've stocked up on that. splenda 100 mini's are also on offer there

Italian food is one of the best cuisines in the world, but it's not a dough base or some white flour mad into pasta that makes it like that, it's the sauces! One of the best meals I ever had there was salmon in a cream sauce - ideal for Atkins!! The only thing you might be worried about is not being given a choice to have a dish which does NOT have bread or pasta, but in that case, they will ALWAYS have a salad option. Enjoy! I'm off to France in 2 weeks. Agh, chocolate croissants!!!

neo_crone
Sun, Jun-08-08, 04:25
You can eat LC in Italy no problem, so long as you go to full restaurants rather than purely pizza or pasta places.
There is always a meat and a fish course you can order from, and green salads, (Insalata) and cooked veg (Vedure).
You don't say which part of Italy you are visiting. Roast meat is very popular in Tuscany, but they add a huge amount of salt, so watch out for that. Lots of excellent salami and olives of course. Choose a starter or light lunch from the antipasti - artichokes, cold meats, olives, etc. The further south you go, the more likely you are to find carb heavy menus - pasta and pizza with tomato sauces come from the south, because in general the area is much poorer than the north.
Watch out for the soups which often have bread and pasta in them. The bread is unsalted, mostly white, and often unyeasted (soda bread) so lots of people find it unpalatable anyway  Just try to keep away from the Gelati bars (ice cream) and the Tiramisu and you should do fine.

Thank you eme, kimberly and neo for your wonderful suggestions. I am going to san remo which is north italy. i was there last year and after all the pizza and pasta i craved steak . it can be difficult eating out there as very few menus are in english and not many of the locals speak enlish either. all i saw on the menu was angus beef and i knew this was steak and with a price of 7.60euro i was in heaven. the waiter brought this huge steak which was THE best steak i have ever eaten in my life. when i finished i turned to my fiance and said, i cant believe that huge steak was 7.60, thats amazing value. To my shock and horror when the bill came it was 7.60an ounce, the steak was 10oz..the most expensive meal i have ever had in my life and one i wont be repeating lol

Also grinding them will allow your body to make use of the good things in them, un-ground seeds will just pass through you undigested.

Has anyone found a place to buy Walden Farms Pancake syrup ever since Low carb megastore stopped selling it?

I used to love that stuff -- and the chocolate one! Ever since I've gone back on plan, I can't find any UK sites that sell it.

Hey again y'all . Been on holiday to Paris - I mostly ate cheese, but a bit of cake as it was my birthday and the waitress 'suggested' I had to order choc cake. Turns out the other half had arranged for candkes to be put on the cake and all the waiters to sing to me!

Ah well, back on the diet again and happy to be.

Another 'English' question for you guys - what is 'heavy cream'? Double, single, whipping? Eh? Does it even matter? I am looking to get creative with cream. I never fancied it before, but need something for sweet cravings after my b'day treat. I can NOT face another mock danish....

I think double cream is the equivalent of heavy cream - maybe single cream is called light cream

Welcome back from Paris, sounds like you had a wonderful time. Happy belated birthday too. awww how sweet of your other half to get everyone to sing to you.
I hear you about the mock danish. i started off with bacon and eggs every day. got sick of that after 2 weeks so made the mock danish, got sick of that too and fancied kippers and scrambled egg but found the kippers too salty. i'm back to mock danish again lol. i am going to Italy next weekend and i just hope i can say NO to pasta, pizza and ice cream

Hi peeps,

I am a Londoner too!

What is Stevia?

Atkin's rules, 10 lbs in two weeks!

Does anyone know where to buy Konnyaku products in the UK?

Hello MintT, welcome to the boards! Congratulations on your weight loss so far :D Where in London are you?

Stevia is a plant that has sweet leaves and its extract is used as an alternative to sugar. I believe it comes in a granulated and liquid forms, but some people use the dried leaves too. It is low in sugar alcohols as far as I am aware, so it doesn't tend to spike your blood sugar. Something along those lines anyway. It can have an after-taste of liquorice/aniseed though.

Here's a link (http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/shirataki_noodles_(konnyaku)_details.html) to the lowcarbmegastore which sells shirataki noodles. I don't know of any other products apart from the noodles though.

Hi MintT and welcome. You can buy Konnyaku and Shirataki from Mount Fuji Foods (http://www.mountfuji.co.uk/acatalog/Mount_Fuji_Japanese_Diet_Foods_28.html) and also from Japan Centre (http://www.japancentre.com/?cmd=cat&cid=407). They both do mail order and are equally efficient and prompt. Japan Centre is a lot cheaper though. I buy in quantity to save on the shipping costs.

Hi there fellow Brits!

Hope I'm allowed to pop in here! I no longer live in the UK but will be descending on my homeland in six weeks, with my 2 daughters and German husband.

I just had a look through this thread to get into the mood for the UK again!

When on holiday for 3 weeks in the UK last year, I managed not to gain any weight, which I thought was pretty impressive considering we were camping for half the time and staying with friends/relatives the rest of the time.

I'm now aiming to get the last few pounds off before we go and then maintain whilst there.

Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Morrison's and Asda, here we come!!!

BTW, somebody mentioned Coconut Oil in this thread and I just wanted to say, from my experience, it's well worth looking into.

I haven't cooked with it much to be honest, but I use it as a face cream, body lotion and hand cream. I've thrown out everything else!

My husband always says I don't look my age (44), but he's maybe biased! However, recently, after using the VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) for a couple of months, I was complimented by a local greengrocer on my "lovely skin". I could swear myself that the dark circles I've had under my eyes for years are also a lot less noticeable.

Someday I'll get round to cooking with the stuff, too...

P.S. I hope the weather will be better in the UK this year than in 2007. Gosh was I glad to get hold of a fleece jacket in the sale when I was in Wales. Would have froze to death otherwise at the beach.

i love coconut oil too and eat it by the teaspoon when i get a craving for something. i have used it in cooking also but i find it evaporates very quickly or gets absorbed by the food im cooking so now i stick to olive oil and butter.
The weather has been beautiful here all week but it's due to change for the weekend, typical.
Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday Amanda.
