Hey Ladies,
I'm just curious who else is expecting?
This is my second pregnancy, i'm due Dec 8th, and this time around im going to try to LC as much as morning sickness allows. Considering I am "a bit" overweight as it is, I would like to keep my weight gain to a minimum.
So, anyone else?

You are not suppose to do lc while your pregnant! The baby is developing and it needs all the benefits of a full range of foods. It can be very dangerous to your baby. If you want to lose weight you need to wait until the baby is born. With my second child I tried not to eat so many sweets. If I desired sweets I would eat fruit.I only gained about 30lbs. I lost all my weight after that pregnancy. You can wait. Do it for the health of your baby.

Hi newjeans!
I'm pregnant, too. About 6 weeks. Baby (god willing) will be due around 15 January.
Like you - I am intending to stick to a lowish carb way of eating during the pregnancy.
I gained over 60 pounds with my first pregnancy and will still SLOWLY taking it off when I got pregnant this time. In my first pregnancy, I went from quite strict Atkins to a complete 9 month carb binge "for the sake of the baby". All I did was get fat. I seriously don't believe that eating mac and cheese and Starbucks blueberry muffins did the baby any favours. As it is, I'm probably lucky I didn't develop gestational diabetes.
THIS TIME - my guidelines for myself are:
1. unlimited veggie carbs
2. up to two servings of fruit carbs with protein or fat (like an apple with cheese)
3. if exercising, one serving of a starchy, but low GI carb at lunch (like brown rice or a half a sweet potato)
4. Milk is ok
5. NO junk carbs.
6. Eat 5 times a day (this helped me lose weight before and I think is good for blood sugar stability)
I think this is a healthy, moderate way to eat. I cannot believe that it isn't BETTER for my baby than a long carb binge would be.
I have chosen to stay out of ketosis during my pregnancy ONLY because so many people have frightened me about it and I don't think being in ketosis is necessary to control weight gain.
My goal is to not gain any weight in the first trimester and to put on no more than 15 pounds for the whole pregnancy. This is a healthy weigh gain for some one with an obese BMI, which I have (31).
I also exercise 4-5 times a week and I'm not stopping that at all. I have traded running for the elliptical and cut my weights by a third.
Sorry for all the info! It helped me to put it all down on "paper"!
What are you thinking in terms of diet and exercise?

Congratulations to both of you! Since I had my baby in January, I love to hear about others who are expecting.
I think your eating plan sounds good and healthy for both you and baby. Also, the exercise will help. I walked all the way up until the end of my pregnancy, and I think it really helped me not to gain too much weight. Also, it helped to keep my feet and ankles from swelling. I was already very obese when I got pregnant, but thanks to the walking and eating pretty good (I had some really bad moments), the pregnance was healthy, I didn't gain too much weight, and I didn't get gestational diabetes. My mom was pretty worried about that one.
Good luck in your pregnancies!

If you can stay LC it is not bad for you by any means during pregnancy.
I think when people say Low carb everyone erroneously assumes induction level carbs.
You can be perfectly happy and perfectly support your developing baby by staying low carb.
You only need an extra 300 calories a day, and that doesnt mean it should come in the form of carbs.
I am due in 6 weeks and i tried to stay low carb but to be honest, protein grossed me out more than anything else. First trimester i lost 25 pounds, the only thing i was willing to eat at the time was oranges and vegetables. Second trimester i started eating again and it was not LC really, it wasnt too bad but just not as healthy, things just did not look appealing and i ate WAY too much fruit. Third trimester, is when i have gained the most, i am now 10 pounds more than i was b4 i got pregnant ...... i could blame that on the ice cream or lack of self control, either or.
So i think as long as you can actually keep up with the LC you should.

Malishka -
If you are only 10 pounds more than you were before you got pregnant, then in real terms you have LOST 15 pounds during the pregnancy as the pregnancy itself (baby, placenta, blood volumes, water, etc) weighs about 25 pounds.
No wonder you gained the most weight during the 3rd trimester - your baby was actually putting on all the weight that he/she needs on his or her little body.
You've done great! Good luck for birth! I have a little boy who is now 14 months and my birth experience with him was the most powerful and amazing experiences of my life! I don't know whether this is your first baby or not, but don't listen to people who tell you horror stories about birth. It doesn't have to be like that!

Hey Ladies,
its great to see a few more prego mommies here!
so im in my 13th week now, and feeling a bit better over all.
I have been out of town for a while (visiting family several states away) and my eating was horrible. I refuse to get on a scale for a few days at least- I know im dehydrated (16+ hrs of driving, plus round trip flying) and retaining water. I did make an effort at first, but eating at my parents & grandparents house was carbapalooza. ah well, im home now and i made a big crock pot of pork loin and carrots and onions.......i need to go shopping, since i emptied out the fridge before we left.
out on the road & in various airports i picked up a mother of a sinus infection. its actually claiming my voice box as well....ugh....but i have some of those vicks shower tablet thingys, im excited to try it out. hopefully this thing runs its course since my job starts on monday - 12 hr shifts 3 days a week.....hhmm......
well, im long winded, lol. its great to be back here =).
i noticed in the last week that ive had a bit more energy (before getting sick that is) and i was able to get in lots of walking, so that was good. also most of my food aversions have disappeared, which has been wonderful as well.

One would think so but my bitch of a doctor gave me a lecture yesterday saying i gained 20 pounds... with her. I only started seeing a doctor at 22 weeks and she doesnt believe me on my pre pregnancy weight....... words like stupid biatch come to mind and i want to smack her for being a bitch. Above all else, the one place that i actually LOOK bigger is my hips and stomach, i didnt gain abnormally at all, not in my hands, or face or anything, which, if i gain just fat, you see it in my face first usually.
Sorry i am ranting but she made me mad, because i felt that if i could come out of delivery weighing roughly the same it would be good. now i am being thretened with a c section because i am "fat inside too" and the baby might not come down.

Malishka, you have a RIGHT to be mad. How aggravating. What is UP with doctors pulling this shit? Sometimes I feel like they can be so useless.
So vent all you want. But when it comes down to it, have faith in what you're doing. You're healthy? Baby is healthy? So what about what you've gained as long as you "gain" a healthy baby in the end!
Oh and as for being "threatened" with a c-section, guess how many women are having them lately...and it has nothing to do with size? Honestly, find a new doc if you can. If not then just hang in there and focus on what's important. Good luck!! <hugs>

I dont know any doctors here. I am not from here, i moved from CA to NY and two weeks later got pregnant . . .
Luckily the only thing that keeps me calm about the c section is that hubby is an RN with a law degree in progress, so i know my rights and i know she can not make me have one, hell i am going to refuse everything i find un necessary. I think it pisses her off that i refuse to just do what she says.
Plus what kind of BS is "fat inside" .. i am like starting to hold a grudge against her. ..
I wish i wasnt so far along as to get a new doctor, but it is 35 weeks, a bit late probably.

Malishka,
im sorry to hear you are having such a problem with your dr. to make matters worse, i would imagine that your blood pressure is up a little bit when you go in for appointments, because of the stress of having to deal with her. best of luck hon, at least you are almost "done" and wont have to put up with her crap much longer.

I'm preggo too! I'm almost 9 weeks along now. I'm not really eating low carb, per se, because of the nausea and I'm eating whatever sounds like it won't make me :Puke: don'tchaknow.
I've actually lost about 2 pounds though...doc didn't say word, so I'm not gonna worry!
Yay for having babies!

Actually it is the ODDEST thing, after always being prehypertention my BP went significantly down ever since i got pregnant. I was low- normal, and now i am just normal.
Apparently most peoples BP does drop in pregnancy, how weird is that???

congrats witchiejen!
and Malishka, that is good about your bp though, one less thing to worry about, lol.
i missed my friday apt. to hear the heartbeat- ive had the most horrid sinus infection/laryngitis thing, which is finally clearing up. so, ill have to reschedule that apt, i cant wait to hear the heartbeat!!! i have to admit, the last 2 weeks i dont feel prego anymore..........my morning sickness has gone away, and while i still feel tired its not as bad as it was, so im trying not to worry. i havnt had any bleeding or cramping or anything, so im probably fine, but still.......
well, i gotta get- im only home on lunch break, back to the grindstone, lol.

Malishka - I can't believe how ABUSIVE your doctor was to you. How dare she "threaten" you with a c-section! As if it is HER choice. It sounds like you know your rights and can stand up to her, but I know that it can be hard work to hold your ground in such a vulnerable time in your life, when you just want to do everything right for the baby.
I really believe that you should tell her how unhelpful her comments are.

i'm pregnant - week 23. from week 6 till week 14 i was so ill with morning sickness that i stopped with low-carb, only ate what i could stomach, and only put on 2 pounds i was throwing up so much. from week 14 to week 21 i was still pretty bad, throwing up usually once a day, still unable to tolerate protein (every time i tried it made me much much worse) but i still managed to gain about 20 pounds. i'd been feeling mostly better for the past couple of weeks so on monday i went back to low carb. i've lost 3 pounds which i'm sure was the water i was retaining. i'm about 182 now (was 157 when i conceived). the horrible gnawing hunger i was dealing with is gone - clearly it wasn't just pregnancy but carbs, even though carbs didn't make me feel that way pre-pregnancy - and i'm looking forward to staying low-carb for the rest of the pregnancy. i'm just eating maintenance, the type of thing i was eating before i got pregnant, so i doubt i'll be in ketosis - eating plenty of nuts and yoghurt and veggies and dairy etc. meat and chicken are still hard for me to stomach but i'm trying. i don't expect to necessarily lose any weight now even though half of what i've put on is clearly 'me' and not the baby, but i'll be happy to have just kept the weight gain to normal proportions - and to be able to finally eat more healthily both for me and the baby.
i'm due at the end of october (this is baby number 1!)

Debmeg - poor you to suffer so much with morning sickness!
I am 12 weeks now and have lost 10 pounds in the first trimester, but I'm overweight, so it's probably a good thing. I just set out to maintain really, but it seems my metabolism is faster and even though I've loosened up my calorie and carb control since getting pregnant, I'm still losing about a pound a week. I feel great, though.
I had my 12 week ultrasound yesterday and everything going well. I spoke to my midwife about losing weight. She said that I could lose at this rate, provided I felt ok, until the 20th week. Then she said that I should maintain until 28 weeks and then she would like to see me put on 10 pounds in the 3rd trimester, which would basically be a net loss of 8 pounds over the course of the pregnancy. That's fine with me!
Still exercising normally - although I watch my heart rate and have decreased my weights slightly. And I don't feel sluggish, which is a nice change from my experience with my first child, when I felt SO sluggish - probably to do with my 80% refined carb diet....

Well, I just had a doc's appointment yesterday. Baby is doing fine, heartrate is 156 bpm, so according to old wive's tales that means it's a girl. I know my in-laws would love that. They've already decided it's a girl...I think mostly because they already have 4 grandsons!
I just started my 2nd trimester and I've only gained 2 pounds. That ASTOUNDS me. I was SURE I had gained 10 pounds because I feel so bulgy and wobbly and the area above my belly button is/seems bigger. I just don't get it.
I've been eating watermelon and fruit lately because I can't stand the constipation, even with my prenatals w/stool softeners. Argh! Any other ideas?

Wow, I am no longer preggo. I had my baby on June 12th. Now I am working my butt off to take off all of the weight that I have gained with the pregnancy. I find it comendable that you ladies are ensureing that you are having healthy ways of eating throughout the duration of your pregnancies. I sometimes thought about coming to this board during my pregnancy but felt far too ashamed as I knew the damage had already begun. I wish you healthy pregnancies!!! Good luck to you!

2g to 3g of fish oil - preferably the liquid type - should get things moving again....it can take a few days from when you start taking it, but should help for the rest of the pregnancy, and bonus - it's good stuff for fetal brain development!

I am 29+ weeks and have gained almost 20 lbs. I have been eating what I want. Granted, I rarely eat junk food or fast food. I have been eating bread/fruit/cereal and lots of carby stuff like that.
I gained about 26-28 lbs with DS#1 and was hopnig to keep it in that same range. Basically under 30 is my goal. It comes off pretty quickly.
I haven't exercised at all this pregnancy : ( Busy working full time and chasing after a 22 month old. I guess that is exercise in itself..lol
I was about 20 away from goal when I got pregnant so I am REALLY looking forward to getting back on track once the baby is born. I can't be bothered with counting carbs or anything while preggo though.. I have bigger fish to fry so to speak..lol

It's a boy! His name will be Cullen Gabriel and he's due on January 1st. Although, I'm thinking about talking to the doc and inducing a bit earlier for maternity leave reasons. I am at 38 weeks on the 19th of december, so I think it would be ok.
I've gained about 5 pounds so far and I am at 19 weeks...so, I guess I'm going ok. Doctor hasn't said a word about my weight either. Yay for that.

I am 21 weeks pg, and have been LC for 4 yrs including now! I only added fruit, that's it! I eat fried eggs for breakfast, meat and veggies for lunch and dairy for supper. No nausea, no constipation, no cravings and I have good BW. I take lots of vitamins and minerals. I stopped jogging, instead I walk 3 times a week. During IVF I gained 3 kg, since being pg I gained another 6. I did gain fat, but since I have reached my goal weight before I know I will be able to do it again! People are horrified I am LCing, I ignore them. I have no bothersome pg symptoms so I must be doing something right! I don't think the food they would have me eating is healthy for my or my baby so I wont eat it. I also refused to do the sugar test. Why put all that sugar in my body? If I do have a problem the solution is a LC diet, Hello! that is what I am doing anyway!

I haven't been on the forum for a while, but just found out I'm preggers. Due in May. I'm going to try to LC it through the pregnancy. I'd like to keep my gain to 15lbs this time. With the last 2, I ended up at 175 at the end and that's where I stayed. With this one if I end up at 150, that would be where I should be if I were an appropriate weight pre-pregnancy. I am 12lbs less than when I got pregnant the 1st time (and 20lbs less than the 2nd).
Like most of you, I think I'll do modified low carb and eat things like nuts and milk, a little fruit and maybe some sweet potato, but I'm going to avoid grains. I don't think we need them. I think I can have a perfectly healthy baby grown mostly on protein and veggies...how weird an idea is that!!!
Fortunately, I haven't had any morning sickness. With my last pregnancy I couldn't eat meat at all after the 1st month, but hopefully that won't happen this time around.

Congrats Koalaty!
I think your plan sounds like a good one. We're not talking about induction style carb restriction - just keeping the junk out.
I have to admit that I've been eating some wholemeal bread and even some sweets, but those things are very occasional.
I am now 22 weeks pregnant. I'm still a net total of 5 pounds LESS than my pre-pregnancy weight. I lost 10 pounds in the first trimester and have gained 5 in between 12-22 weeks.
I'm so pleased with this.
I had an ultrasound last week and the baby is bang on right size. I feel great.
Good luck to you!

Hi everyone!
I am almost 7 weeks pregnant. Been eating everything in sight already and just decided I cannot go on doing this! The scale has not been my friend lately.
Queasy every day, and was using the excuse of eating bread to help -- but all it's done is cause me to put back on 5 pounds right away for no reason -- I know it's not from the pregnancy this early.
I'm pretty nervous about the pregnancy -- I'm 42 years old and had a MC last year same time as this at 7 weeks. Chances are high at my age for a MC or for a problem due to my eggs being old.
I've only been successful at weightloss on Induction, and not even sure how to do maintenance. Need to pull out my Atkins book again!

However, I just got a call from my doc today... I failed my 1h GTT :( and im a bit bummed by that news. Im waiting for the new appointment with a bunch of specialists (dietician, endocrinologist and so on). I dont know if ill have to pass a 3h test...

So sorry to hear about the GTT and good luck with the appointments with the specialists.
I know that my rules sound pretty good, but believe me - I don't always stick to them either! A sweet here and there and sometimes pasta is just what I want.
I have a good friend who had gestational diabetes which was controlled perfectly with diet. She actually had to be very strict with carbs actually - I was surprised!
Let us know how it goes.
