We received a telephone call yesterday from the trauma center in Columbia stating only that our son was there. He is 22 year's old. According to what we finally learned, he almost bled to death from a car accident but was medi-vac'd the 40 miles to Columbia in time. While on the way to the hospital (still knowing nothing about his condition) the wife and I saw his friend's truck (less than 5 minutes from our house and the passenger side looked like a compressed accordion. The wife immediately suggested we talk about something positive.

Needless to say, when we finally spoke with the surgeon, we were very relieved. He lost his spleen, broke his pelvis and ankle but it could have been much worse. Today, he is making reasonable progress and the CT scans showed nothing else particularly abnormal.

On the diabetic side... I did eat one meal in the hospital, baked turkey breast, broccoli, and water but my blood sugar has been swinging from 100 (low with Novolog) to 150 (high since yesterday). It doesn't run that high normally. This morning it was 120 (usually 70 - 90) and one hour after breakfast - 150, usually no more than 120. Although I don't consciously feel particularly stressed at the moment, I can only believe the situation is having more impact than I realize. These numbers are definite excursions from normal for me.

Thanks for listening,

That's terrible, Korban! I wish your son a speedy recovery. I can imagine that that sort of incident is going to cause stress whether you can feel it or not. I think these things can work on us subconsciously.

Hi Korban,

I have also heard and read that stress acts upon our sugar levels. I wish your son a speedy recovery, and perhaps some deep breathing or other meditation or exercise can bring down our stress levels?

Korban, my thoughts are with you and your family. My own kid is going to turn 22 on Friday, and I can't imagine how dreadful it was for you to get that phone call. Many years ago, I got such a call telling me my sister had been involved in a terrible motorcycle crash and was being flown to our state's best hospital -- she was in a coma for over a month. That call was hard enough, but if it involved my son? I somehow think elevated blood sugar would be the least scary physical reaction I'd have. I'm so glad you have good news to report about his prognosis, and I hope you'll find the exercise not only helps with your BG, but also relieves your stress a bit. Good luck and best wishes to all of you.

Korban,

So sorry to hear of your son's accident. So glad he is going to be okay. I've been through that myself with a child and there is really nothing more horrible.
