Hi.. I live in the UK and have recently been diagnoised with insulin resistance. I saw a naturopath whilst working in aussie and she did all these test low and behold IR.. I have PCOS so really it explains the fact im "thin" everywhere apart from my tummy..

I have the wonderful female stomach! Its annoying but at least knowing i have IR its a help. My husband and I are trying for a baby and we are going for IVF saying that i need to shed some pounds if this is gonna happen.

Now I know i have IR ive been told to go on a Low carb low GI diet

like the name suggests im a chef. you think this would be easy for me well its not!

My life is food.. My life is good and BAD food! However im doing it... well i think i am.

Im not sure if GI and Low carb is the same thing im not sure about reading labels in Aussie everything was labelled LOW GI MED GI etc. .here NOTHING is.

Im frustrated.

I would love some help or a buddy?

I do shop at holland and barratt a lot i make my own cereal using linseed meal and almond meal with nuts cinn. etc (if someone wants recipe ill be glad to share)

I have some great recipes but those days i dont feel like cooking I dont knoww aht i can really eat. Especially since im not sure how to look at a label and tell if its low GI..

Well hopefully I havent bored all you of :)

You should try the Atkins diet. Get the book you can usually pick them up cheaply in charity shops or ebay. Your cereal thing sounds good but you should start on Atkins induction and you can't eat that on induction. Personally I have lost a good deal of weight on atkins since I started last April and I feel fantastic now. Even if I hadn't lost any weight I would still stay on this way of eating just for how it makes me feel...its like a fog has been lifted. You can't do the Atkins diet half hearted it just won't work you have to be really committed but after the first week you are not hungry anyway, the you see the fat melting away. Definitely read the book and have a think about it...theres plenty of choices you can eat and really delicious food.

Hi Chefjen
I agree with Teetiefunk, go and buy the book, and start low carbing on induction straight away. For you to have insulin resistance I guess you have been on a high carb and sugar way of eating for a long time. In the UK there are not a lot of lowcarb products, but you don't need them anyway. The Atkins diet is all about eating simple, natural foods. Start by cutting out all carby foods and sugar, Only eat proteins like meat, fish, cheese and eggs etc with salads and vegetables. You are allowed fatty foods like Olive oil, butter and mayo.
Your body will burn fat for energy(including body fat)
On a 'normal' diet, your body burns carbs first for energy. Any unused carbs are stored as fat. when all the carbs are used, it then starts burning fat. If you reduce or eliminate the carbohydrate in your diet then your body must burn the fat first, hence the great weighloss on this diet.
Buy a Carb counter ( I have a little calorie counting book that also shows the carb content of every food you can think of). On induction you should only eat around 20g of carbs a day for the first 2 weeks, no cheating allowed. After that you increase the carbs gradually
I have been low carbing since 2003, maintaining my goal weight since May 2004. I intend to eat like this for the rest of my life. I am in total control of my blood sugar levels.
Good luck to you and let us know how it goes. Have a good read of the posts on this forum and look at the recipes.
