Best water home water purification systems? AP probe finds drugs

I've been thinking of getting a home water purification system
for drinking and cooking and perhaps something smaller and
simpler for taking on the road. (This recent article is a sort
of wake up call to finally do something.)

Any recommendations/options/features/what to avoid? My local
water has both fluoride and chlorine and no doubt other less
desirable contaminants. Right now I have a carbon filter on
the fridge for ice and drinking water.
