I've recently been reading about the benefits of Probiotics. I was wondering what the LCabers thought of them - are supplements necessary or does our healthy lifestyle mean we get enough of the good and bad bacteria?

Are they available in tablet form? I couldn't face the raw milk and kefir granuel route.

I try not to think much about "our" diet--it's a meaningless term. All I know is what I eat, and my doctor would like me to take them, and I don't because that's not where I chose to put my money.

If you've been sick, or exposed to nasty stuff, or perhaps think you didn't eat well for a long time, or have symptoms that make you think probiotics would be a good use of your money, test a bottle. It won't hurt. Generally, the better they are, the more expensive they'll be, and some might even be in the cold case at the health food store. The cheap ones at the drug store are unlikely to make a huge difference.

I'm thinking it may be a health fad. Yes, even doctors fall for those too. There isn't a ton of evidence they do anything. And being a low carber you're not eating a lot of things they need to thrive on, like sugars and starches. Although they do eat indigestible fibers.

So IMHO it is totally unproven and most likely way over-hyped. However you might want to try it yourself. Sometimes I get caught up in the hype too. :)
