I've been meaning to write this in this forum for quite some time. Several months ago, I saw a dermatologist from Tucson being interviewed on TV. She actually said that too many carbs in the diet caused acne. And all those years ago my parents tried to curb my fat intake! Hey, wasn't the fat...was the fries I ate along with it!

That sounds like Perricone. He wrote a book on skin problems like acne. His suggestion was low carb as well. Unfortunately my teenage daughter won't read the book and won't take advice from dad.

It was a female dr., but don't remember her name.
After the cruel remarkes during my high school days, I would have read or done anything. My mom even had me on an old English treatment of hers drinking barley water.
Tell your daughter her next best option is paying big bucks later on for dermabrasion and/or laser treatments to try & get rid of those lovely scars. Lord knows it's hard enough being a teenager without that on your plate, as well.

I am working on a blog post about this right now. Here is preview for you....
"When I was a teenager, back in the stone age when dinosaurs roamed free, I had my share of pimples. Nothing was devastating than to have some big red painful bump on my face since the seemed to like to show up right before school photo day or a big dance. My mom used to blame those zits on junk food. Particularly the greasy kind.
"All that grease you eat ends right up on your face ya know!" was a common mom-ism.
Her "remedies" for my break outs usually included some kind of caustic cleaning agent that left me with dried out, cracked, bleeding skin still covered in pimples. I remember having tubes of Clearasil, containers of rubbing alcohol, lots of concealer and big tubs of Noxema at the ready. None of them really seemed to help, but at least my face wasn't as bad as my neighbor's. That poor kid was put on some prescription that made him look like and extra from the movie "The Mummy". He honestly looked better with the zits.
As my mom continued to blame grease and oils for our break outs, news was released that 2 studies proved that junk food had nothing to do with zit outbreaks. It was a hormonal thing. You either got zits or you didn't. Apparently I was just one of those unlucky people who was destined to have hideous red marks on her face at a time when appearance was very important, self esteem was at rock bottom, and I was already too tall for most guys to ask me out anyway.
Like a lot of what I learned as a kid, it turns out those studies were complete crap.
"One compares real chocolate bars with fake ones and was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine with funding from the Chocolate Manufacturers Association. But that's comparing sugar with sugar, as Treloar says, and the fake chocolate bars were also loaded with trans fats known to trigger inflammation. The other study examines sugar in the diet of a small group, but, Treloar says, does not take into account what we know now about how glycemic loads from other foods such as white flour and potatoes affect insulin levels."

Check out the link. It's a very interesting story.

I've been hearing a lot about zits and dairy products lately.

But is it the dairy or the carbs IN the dairy? When I drank milk as a kid, I easy chugged 1/2 gallon a day. That is over 90 carbs from just that alone.

The dairy, since there's little carbs in cheese and it was specifically cheese that was implicated in the article(s) I read. Google on dairy and acne and see what you can find. I know I will often have a breakout when I indulge in dairy, and that's generally limited to no-lactose dairy (thus, low carb).

Giving up dairy hasn't made any change at all in my monthly breakouts.
Neither has giving up sugar, for that matter! :P

Google the 'oil cleansing method' - it has done wonders for my skin. I almost always had a blemish or two on my face and I always assumed it would end when I reached my 20's or 30's....it never did! Now that I use the oil cleansing method I MIGHT have a single blemish once a month (it has more to do with hormones than food, in my opinion). Give it a shot!

Your food directly effects your hormones. Remember, Insulin is a hormone.

True, however, it would appear that it has more to do with estrogen and the like than insulin, imo. I have been low carbing for several years and it was not until I began the ocm that I saw any big difference in my skin.
I can induce a breakout with massive amounts of carbs over a long period of time, but any exposure to gluten will cause an immediate breakout. Dairy makes no difference, whatsoever.

Yeah, I had the bad skin as a teenager also. Now I have kids with various degrees of their own skin problems....I agree that
gluten/wheat is a definite trigger, but dairy bothers my skin to this day ( as in too much)....I think the doctor could have been
Dr. Schwarzbein that the first poster was talking about. She links acne to carbs and sweets in her books.

Too much dairy makes me break out as well. Cheese/cream.
