Hello, this is my first post to this forum but have been lurking for about a week now and have learned much. Thanks.

I am a 58 year old male, BMI = 32 with, I think, Type 2 diabetes. My bg numbers have been high over the last 5 or 6 months and getting worse. I have been taking 2 x 10mg glipizide and 500 mg metformin. A1c 3 months ago was 8 something, first of February was 10 something. Blood glucose averaged 240 – 285 with excursions to 330 or 350. Tried the low fat diet, etc., to no avail. Grabbed and read a copy of Atkins Diabetes Revolution and as a last resort began induction program February 15 at 20 g carbs per day. By the fifth day of induction my bg had dropped 100 points! I was astounded. I had an appointment with my internist that same day and he seemed somewhat impressed and mumbled something about watching my fat intake. He put me on Lantus 20 units to start – titrating until my morning bg is 100. My morning numbers have often been too low I think - 62, 51… so I dropped the metformin and tonight I am thinking I need to drop the evening glipizide… Unfortunately, I am not a medical doctor so I am shooting in the dark. I have an appointment again this Thursday (March 6).

For anyone interested, I have graphed my bg information (fasting / morning) and daily average and it can be found at http://xerarc.com/bg .

I have little idea what I am doing except playing doctor for the moment. The data is pretty scattered but a trend is certainly evident. Even at 51 mg/dl bg I only felt a bit light-headed, nothing striking and this concerns me somewhat. I use the ReliOn Ultima (Walmart) and the precision seems to be pretty good but have no clue re: accuracy.

I would like to think with continued low carbs and exercise (which I am now doing) and some weight loss that I can get off insulin at least – the numbers will tell. I have been rigorous in sticking with the carb regime and do not find it difficult, i.e., no cravings, etc .

Not sure why I dropped metformin instead of glipizide but had to do something or lower the units of Lantus I guess. Any suggestions, comments, questions or criticisms would be greatly appreciated, including anything I might need to tell my internist on Thursday.

I am just amazed to see bg numbers that have not been through the roof… I had literally almost given up. In just two weeks on low carbs I seem to be more energetic and less depressed (have lost a few pounds too)– my wife would agree with that too…

Thanks in advance,
